ABSTRACT

The sinew channels are a tendon and muscle network, and their description is based on the observation presented on the Huangdi Neijing Ling Shu. However, the myofascial system is an uninterrupted series of connective tissue that is comprised of layers that run in different directions. The similarities on these pathways are compared, such as a brief description on the myofascial pain syndrome and its similitude with the Impediment disorder from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Furthermore, we discuss the treatment of these conditions from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective.

ABSTRACT

Coffee is one of the most consumed products worldwide. Among the varieties of this product, specialty coffee is a type of coffee that has been growing in the world market. This paper aims to assess the effects that the conditions derived from coffee roasting at different altitude levels have on the quality of the product. It was discovered that processing coffee at a higher altitude level yielded a smaller increase in bitterness. This led to a better Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) score in cupping and, consequently, to better preservation of the coffee quality. The storage time affected the aroma by associating roaster aromas with older coffees. Although the assessed origins had the same NIR spectra, differences in peak intensity lead to variations in the flavor and aroma of the coffee. Furthermore, although green beans prolong quality allowing a SCA score of 84.73 ± 2.81 after 4 months of storage, roasted coffee at higher altitudes could also maintain the quality between production and consumption (SCA score of 80.22 ± 0.91 after 2 months). Finally, this research found that the instrumental equipment helped to find minor changes in the sensorial profile, and with these changes correlated with the sensorial panel, the best conditions to preserve coffee quality were found.

ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic pain is a complex phenomenon that brings physical and emotional impairments negatively impacting people's quality of life. The adoption of interventions such as ear acupuncture and dry cupping can represent a treatment option for people with chronic back pain. Objectives: To investigate the effects of ear acupuncture combined with dry cupping therapy on the interference of pain with the daily activities and quality of life of adults with chronic back pain. Methods: An open-label, randomized, parallel-group controlled clinical trial. One hundred and ninety-eight adults were randomized into control (CG - ear acupuncture) or experimental (EG - ear acupuncture combined with dry cupping) groups. Interventions were performed in five sessions, once a week, lasting five weeks. Evaluations were performed before the first session, after the last session, and seven days after the second evaluation, using the Brief Pain Inventory to assess the impact of pain on daily activities and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) to assess the quality of life. Results: Between the initial and final sessions, there were significant changes in daily activities , activity, work, mood, relationships, sleep, and in the physical, psychological and social relationships domains for both the control and experimental groups. Improved perception of quality of life and satisfaction with health were observed for the participants in the experimental group. Conclusion: Ear acupuncture combined with dry cupping showed better results in terms of perception of quality of life and satisfaction with health when compared to ear acupuncture by itself.

ABSTRACT

Background and aim: Chronic back pain causes physical, functional, and emotional disabilities. Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies have been shown as interventions to treat chronic back pain. The present study aimed to clinically evaluate the effects of ear acupuncture combined with cupping therapy on people with chronic back pain. Experimental procedure: We conducted an open-label, randomized, parallel-group controlled clinical trial. Following the CONSORT statement recommendations, 198 participants were randomized into 'ear acupuncture' and 'ear acupuncture and cupping therapy' groups. Data were collected in three different points; before the first session (initial) with the patient, after the last session (final), and seven days after the end of the treatment (follow-up). The Brief Pain Inventory, a digital algometer, and the Rolland Morris Disability Questionnaire were used for data collection. Generalized Estimation Equation model was used to examine the association between the interventions and the primary outcome pain severity. Results: Pain severity, pressure pain threshold, and physical disability improved over time in both groups. However, for the patients being treated with both ear acupuncture and cupping therapy, significant changes were seen in pain severity, pain relief, and physical disabilities between the initial and final sessions. For the 'ear acupuncture and cupping therapy' group, significant changes were also seen for pain relief and physical disability in the follow-up session. Conclusion: Ear acupuncture combined with cupping therapy was shown to be more effective in the treatment of chronic back pain when compared to treatment using only ear acupuncture.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the aroma profile of 10 single origin Arabica coffees originating from eight different growing locations, from Central America to Indonesia, was analyzed using Headspace SPME-GC-MS as the analytical method. Their roasting was performed under temperature-time conditions, customized for each sample to reach specific sensory brew characteristics in an attempt to underline the customization of roast profiles and implementation of separate roastings followed by subsequent blending as a means to tailor cup quality. A total of 138 volatile compounds were identified in all coffee samples, mainly furan (~24-41%) and pyrazine (~25-39%) derivatives, many of which are recognized as coffee key odorants, while the main formation mechanism was the Maillard reaction. Volatile compounds' composition data were also chemometrically processed using the HCA Heatmap, PCA and HCA aiming to explore if they meet the expected aroma quality attributes and if they can be an indicator of coffee origin. The desired brew characteristics of the samples were satisfactorily captured from the volatile compounds formed, contributing to the aroma potential of each sample. Furthermore, the volatile compounds presented a strong variation with the applied roasting conditions, meaning lighter roasted samples were efficiently differentiated from darker roasted samples, while roasting degree exceeded the geographical origin of the coffee. The coffee samples were distinguished into two groups, with the first two PCs accounting for 73.66% of the total variation, attributed mainly to the presence of higher quantities of furans and pyrazines, as well as to other chemical classes (e.g., dihydrofuranone and phenol derivatives), while HCA confirmed the above results rendering roasting conditions as the underlying criterion for differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cupping therapy is used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain. Objectives: The study assessed the effects of dry cupping on pain and functional disability from persistent nonspecific low back pain. Methods: This was a randomized controlled trial, where participants were allocated to a cupping therapy (n = 19) or sham (n = 18) group, for five 10-minute sessions of cupping therapy, twice a week, to stimulate the acupoints related to low back pain (GV4, BL23, BL24, BL25, and BL30, BL40 and BL58) and emotional aspects (HT3 and ST36). All participants were assessed at baseline, post-treatment and follow up (a finalization period of four weeks) using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Groups were compared using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and the effect size was calculated using Cohen̓s d. Results: The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean VAS when compared to the sham, at post-treatment (mean difference: -2.36; standard error [SE]: 0.58; p < 0.001; "large" effect size: -0.94) and follow up (mean difference: -1.71; SE: 0.81; p < 0.042; 'large' effect size: -0.83). The cupping therapy group presented a lower mean ODI when compared to the sham post-treatment (mean difference: -4.68; SE: 1.85; p: 0.017; 'large' effect size: -0.87), although in follow-up, there was no difference between the groups (mean difference: 4.16; SE: 2.97; p: 0.17; "medium" effect size: -0.70). Conclusion: Dry cupping was more effective in improving pain and functional disability in people with persistent nonspecific low back pain when compared to the sham.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The relationships between soil and coffee beans variables were evaluated and then the influence of bean composition on cup quality attributes was computed by means of relation studies. A total of 139 coffee and soil samples were collected directly from the same number of coffee plantations in Chiapas, Mexico. RESULTS: In the elemental composition, only phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and copper in coffee beans had a significant (P < 0.05) relationship with the content of the same elements in soil. The level of macro- and microelements in the coffee bean affected some of the cup quality attributes, but variables such as texture, titratable acidity, and pH of water in soil had a major influence on those attributes. Caffeine, trigonelline, and 5-caffeoylquinic acid in green coffee beans also had a significant influence (P < 0.05) on the sensory attributes of the beverage. CONCLUSION: The elemental composition of soil and coffee beans was important in explaining the cup quality attributes, but the most important variables influencing the sensory quality of coffee were altitude of plantations and moisture of coffee beans. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate if a single session of real or placebo cupping therapy in patients with chronic low back pain would be enough to temporarily reduce pain intensity and functional disability, enhancing their mechanical threshold and reducing local skin temperature. The outcome measures were Brief Pain Inventory, pressure pain threshold, Roland-Morris disability questionnaire and low back skin temperature. This is an experimental clinical trial; after examination (AV0), patients were submitted to real or placebo cupping therapy (15 minutes, bilaterally at the points BL23 (Shenshu), BL24 (Qihaishu) and BL25 (Dachangshu) and were revaluated immediately after the session (AV1) and after one week (AV2). The patients showed a significant improvement in all pain severity items and sleep in the Brief Pain Inventory (p < 0.05) and a decrease in disability in Roland-Morris disability questionnaire (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in pressure pain threshold or skin temperature. No significant differences were found in any outcome of the placebo cupping therapy group. Thus, the cupping therapy is effective in reducing low back pain and decreasing disability after one single session but not in changing skin mechanical threshold or temperature.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a very prevalent condition in the population and cupping therapy has been presented as a frequently used non-pharmacological treatment in this population. However, there is a lack of well-designed studies that evaluate the effects of this technique. This protocol describes a placebo-controlled, randomised, double-blind study that aims to evaluate the effect of dry cupping therapy on pain, physical function, trunk range of motion, quality of life and psychological symptoms in individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Ninety individuals with chronic non-specific low back pain, aged from 18 to 59 years, will be randomised into two groups: intervention group, which will be submitted to dry cupping therapy application with two suctions; and placebo group which will undergo placebo dry cupping therapy. Both applications will occur bilaterally in parallel to the vertebrae from L1 to L5. The application will be performed once a week for 8 weeks. The volunteers will be evaluated before the treatment (T0), immediately after the first intervention (T1), after 4 weeks of intervention (T4) and after 8 weeks of intervention (T8). The primary outcome will be pain intensity, and secondary outcomes will be physical function, lumbar range of motion, patient expectation, overall perception of effect, quality of life and psychological factors. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This protocol has been approved by the Ethics Committee of FACISA/UFRN (number: 3639814). The results of the study will be disseminated to participants through social networks and will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and scientific meetings. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03909672.

ABSTRACT

The diversity of compounds and variations in the aroma and flavor of ground and roasted coffee make the sensory evaluation by the "cupping test" a complex task to be performed. A total of 217 commercial coffee samples classified as different beverage type and with different roast degrees were evaluated by official cuppers in the "cupping test" and the responses for sensory attributes were used to verify the correlation to the near-infrared (NIR) spectra. Chemometric models based on partial least squares (PLS) were built for the powder fragrance, drink aroma, acidity, bitterness, flavor, body, astringency, residual flavor, and overall quality. The parameters of merit such as accuracy, fit, linearity, residual prediction deviation, sensitivity, analytical sensitivity, limits of detection, and quantification were evaluated. All sensory attributes were predicted with adequate values according to the parameters of merit. The proposed method, when compared to the "cupping test," is an alternative to the determination of the coffee sensory attributes. The results demonstrated that the use of NIR associated with chemometrics is efficient and recommended for the prediction of sensorial attributes of coffee by means of the direct analysis of roasted and ground samples, and without any additional preparation, it is a promising tool for the coffee industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study has shown potential use of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with a chemometric tool for the prediction of sensory attributes of commercial coffees. Prediction models for powder fragrance, drink aroma, acidity, bitterness, flavor, body, astringency, residual flavor, and overall quality were built and showed good predictive capacity. The use of NIR allows rapid analysis (1 min or less per sample), and it was possible to evaluate all sensory attributes directly in roasted and ground coffee, without beverage preparation.

ABSTRACT

Trata-se de um ensaio clínico randomizado, baseado nas recomendações do Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials, do Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture, e do Initiative on Methods, Measurement and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials, realizado entre novembro de 2017 e dezembro de 2018.

Chronic back pain generates physical, functional, emotional and socioeconomic changes. Due to the high prevalence of this condition, nurses have an important role in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, as they provide care to patients with chronic back pain at all levels of care. The Nursing Interventions Classification recommends the use of non-pharmacological techniques to solve the Nursing Diagnosis of 'Chronic pain'. These techniques include auricular acupuncture and cupping therapy. Auricular acupuncture is based on the stimulation of acupoints in the ear to relieve signs and symptoms of various diseases, including pain. Cupping therapy, in turn, involves the application of cups to an acupoint or pain area using heat or vacuum apparatus. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the combination of cupping therapy with ear acupuncture on the severity of chronic back pain in relation to the isolated application of ear acupuncture. This is a randomized clinical trial conducted between November 2017 and December 2018, based on recommendations from the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials, Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture, and the Initiative on Methods, Measurement and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials. The final sample consisted of 183 participants aged 18 to 70 years with chronic spinal pain lasting at least three months, self-reported pain ≥ four on a scale of 0-10 over the past seven days, and preserved cognitive function. After the initial evaluation, participants were randomly allocated into two groups: Control (n=94), which received only auricular acupuncture; and Experimental (n=89), which underwent auricular acupuncture in addition to cupping therapy. Both groups received five sessions of interventions once a week. Participants were evaluated three times: before any intervention (initial assessment); after the last session of the interventions (final evaluation), and seven days after the second evaluation (follow-up). In each evaluation, we used the following data collection tools: an instrument to collect demographic information from the participant; the Brief Pain Inventory; the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire; the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref; and a digital algometer to assess the nociceptive threshold. Statistical analysis included Generalized Estimation Equations. The results showed that the combination of auricular acupuncture and cupping therapy provided better results in reducing pain severity (p = 0,015 at final evaluation) and physical disability (p= 0,050 na avaliação final e p = 0,010 at follow up), and improving the overall perception of the quality of life (p=0,014 at follow up) and health satisfaction (p=0,050 at final evaluation) when compared to auricular acupuncture by itself. Additionally, both groups achieved statistically significant improvements throughout treatment in all investigated variables. The effects achieved at the end of treatment lasted for one week after the end of the sessions, for the exception of effects in the domain of social relations in the experimental group, and effects on the general perception of quality of life and psychological and social relations domains in the control group. It is noted that the effectiveness of auricular acupuncture and cupping therapy for the treatment of chronic back pain is increased when these interventions are performed concomitantly. Therefore, the evidence found in this study supports the implementation of these therapies as a nursing intervention in the treatment of chronic back pain.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study assessed optic disc size and cupping, using a commercially available ophthalmoscope, in order to show norms of these values for clinical practice. Subjects were office-workers referred from their respective workplaces for a routine medical examination, which included eye examination. The optic disc size was classified as small, medium or large, for having a diameter < 1.0, 1.0-1.5, or > 1.5 times (respectively) the diameter of the ophthalmoscope's selected light spot on the posterior pole. The cupping was classified as the ratio of the vertical cupping diameter and the vertical disc diameter on a relative decimal scale from 0.0 to 1.0.This study included 184 subjects with a mean age of 40.5 ± 9.5 years; 149 (81%) were males. Their mean ocular pressure was 12.4 ± 1.5 mmHg (range 10-17 mmHg). There was a high correlation between optic disc sizes and cupping in the right and left eyes (Pearson Correlation r = 0.866, p < 0.001); therefore, for simplicity only the data for right eyes are presented. According to our definition, the optic discs in these eyes comprised 27 (14.7%) small, 141 (76.6%) medium and 16 (8.7%) large. The small optic discs were rarely cupped, and the large optic discs were always cupped. Optic disc cupping greater than 0.7 was rarely found and should be suspect of glaucoma. Clinical doctors should be aware of this and refer those subjects with abnormal cupping to the specialist.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed optic disc size and cupping, using a commercially available ophthalmoscope, in order to show norms of these values for clinical practice. Subjects were office-workers referred from their respective workplaces for a routine medical examination, which included eye examination. The optic disc size was classified as small, medium or large, for having a diameter < 1.0, 1.0-1.5, or > 1.5 times (respectively) the diameter of the ophthalmoscopes selected light spot on the posterior pole. The cupping was classified as the ratio of the vertical cupping diameter and the vertical disc diameter on a relative decimal scale from 0.0 to 1.0.This study included 184 subjects with a mean age of 40.5 ± 9.5 years; 149 (81%) were males.
