ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) can induce systemic reactions (SRs) in certain patients, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. METHODS: AR patients who were undergoing standardized HDM SCIT (Alutard, ALK) between 2018 and 2022 were screened. Those who experienced two consecutive SRs were included in the study group. A control group was established, matched 1:1 by gender, age, and disease duration with the study group, who did not experience SRs during SCIT. Clinical and immunological parameters were recorded and analyzed both before SCIT and after 1 year of treatment. RESULTS: A total of 161 patients were included, with 79 (49.07%) in the study group. The study group had a higher proportion of AR combined asthma (26.8% vs. 51.8%, p < 0.001) and higher levels of sIgE to HDM and HDM components (all p < .001). Serum IL-4 and IL-13 levels in the study group were higher than those in the control group (p < .05). The study group received a lower maintenance dosage of HDM extracts injections than control group due to SRs (50000SQ vs. 100000SQ, p < .05). After 1 year of SCIT, the VAS score, the lung function parameters of asthmatic patients over 14 years old significantly improved in both groups (all p < .05). After a 7-day exposure to 20 µg/mL HDM extracts, the percentages of Th1, Th17, Tfh10, and Th17.1 in PBMCs decreased, while the Tfh13 cells significantly increased in the study group (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The type 2 inflammatory response is augmented in HDM-induced AR patients who experienced SRs during SCIT. Despite this, SCIT remains effective in these patients when administered with low-dosage allergen extracts.

ABSTRACT

House dust mite (HDM) allergen immunotherapy (AIT) has an established role in the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis (AR) and allergic asthma (AA) triggered by HDM sensitization. We aimed to identify all double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of HDM AIT for the treatment of AR and AA in humans and to summarize the evidence for AIT products that are currently manufactured and available for clinical use. A total of 56 eligible double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of HDM AIT for the treatment of AA and/or AR in humans fit the inclusion criteria and investigated a total of 14 commercial AIT products; together, the 56 studies enrolled a total of 14,619 patients. Of the 56 studies, 39 studies investigated the current manufacturer-recommended maintenance dose (MRMD) of the product, and 17 investigated other doses. We identified 39 studies (12,539 patients randomized) for 8 sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) products and 17 studies (2,080 patients randomized) for subcutaneous immunotherapy products. For AR, 3 products, the ALK 12 standardized-quality (SQ-HDM) SLIT tablet, the ALK 6 SQ-HDM tablet, and the SG 300 index of reactivity SLIT tablet, had both dose-finding studies (DFSs) and phase III definitive studies (DSs) to demonstrate efficacy of the MRMD of the product. For AA, 2 products, the ALK 12 SQ-HDM SLIT tablet and the ALK 6 SQ-HDM tablet, had both DFSs and DSs for the MRMD. No subcutaneous immunotherapy product had a paired DFS and DS supporting the MRMD. A total of 30 studies of products no longer commercially manufactured were excluded. This study will help to inform clinical care and product selection for the treatment of HDM-induced AR and AA.

Plants are known for their significant dust retention capacity and are widely used to alleviate atmospheric pollution. Urban green plants are exposed to periodic particulate matter pollution stress, and the time intervals between periods of pollution exposure are often inconsistent. The impact of stress memory and pollution intervals on plant dust retention capacity and physiological characteristics during periodic stress is not yet clear. In this study, the common urban landscaping species Nerium oleander L. was selected as the test plant, and stable isotope (15NH4Cl) tracing technology and aerosol generators were used to simulate periodic PM2.5 pollution. This study included two particulate pollution periods (each lasting 14 days) and one recovery period with three different durations (7, 14, and 21 days). The results indicated that periodic particulate matter pollution-induced stress decreased the dust retention capacity of N. oleander leaf surfaces, but particle adsorption to the wax layer was more stable. As the duration of the recovery period increased, leaf particle absorption, which accounted for the greatest proportion of total dust retention, increased, indicating that leaves are the primary organ for dust retention in Nerium oleander L. Root absorption also increased with increasing recovery periods. Prior pollution stress increased oleander physiological and morphological responses, and the plant's air pollution tolerance significantly improved after a recovery period of >14 days.

This study utilized MODIS true color satellite imagery to analyse blowing sand and dust events dynamics in the Middle East from 2010 to 2021, focusing on Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. A total of 4923 dust point sources were detected, with a significant concentration (~90 %) located within the Tigris-Euphrates Basin (Nearest Neighbor Ratio = 0.41, р < 0.001). Land cover analysis revealed that bare land, comprising most of the study area, was the predominant source of dust emissions. Wetlands, though only constituting about 1 % of the area, showed the highest frequency of dust sources per unit area, highlighting their role as critical dust emission hotspots. The study emphasizes the impact of drought and anthropogenic factors, such as poor land management, on blowing dust intensity. It suggests the necessity of strategic land management practices, including re-vegetation of arid areas, reducing soil exposure, and implementing wind erosion control measures. To effectively address the transboundary nature of dust emissions, the findings underscore the importance of fostering regional cooperation through mechanisms such as shared environmental monitoring and data exchange platforms, joint management of cross-border natural resources, and collaborative policy making.

Over the past two decades, the rise in coal worker's pneumoconiosis has prompted research into the effects of respirable coal dust components. This study explores how coal-pyrites produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH), a reactive oxygen species closely associated with particle toxicity, and assesses the ability of safe chemical additives to reduce •OH production at various pH levels. Promising candidates were evaluated in various solutions, including tap and process waters and simulated lung fluid. We employed electrokinetic measurements, infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and ab initio atomistic simulations to analyze particle surfaces. The study also looked at how surface aging affects •OH production. Our results show that •OH generation of the pyrite varies and is catalyzed by elements like silicon, aluminum, and iron in pyrite. Carboxymethyl cellulose was effective in reducing •OH production by targeting surface sulfide and silicon sites and affecting surface hydration and charge. Atmospheric aging was found to increase •OH production, especially in the pyrite with high iron and silicon and low calcium contents, relative to other samples. This highlights the role of the pyrite surface properties and chemical composition, and the solution pH and composition in •OH generation by coal-pyrites.

This work focuses on dust detection, and estimation of vegetation in coal mining sites using the vegetation indices (VIs) differences model and PRISMA hyperspectral imagery. The results were validated by ground survey spectral and foliar dust data. The findings indicate that the highest Separability (S), Coefficient of discrimination (R2), and lowest Probability (P) values were found for the narrow-banded Narrow-banded Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Transformed Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (TSAVI), and Tasselled Cap Transformation Greenness (TC-greenness) indices. These indices have been utilized for the Vegetation Combination (VC) index analysis. Compared to other VC indices, this VC index revealed the highest difference (29.77%), which led us to employ this index for the detection of healthy and dust-affected areas. The foliar dust model was developed for the estimation and mapping of dust impact on vegetation using the VIs differences models (VIs diff models), laboratory dust amounts, and leaf spectral regression analysis. Based on the highest R2 (0.90), the narrow-banded TC-greenness differenced VI was chosen as the best VI, and the coefficient (L) value (-7.75gm/m2) was used for estimating the amount of foliar dust in coal mining sites. Compared to other indices-based difference dust models, the narrow-banded TC-greenness difference image had the highest R2 (0.71) and lowest RMSE (4.95 gm/m2). According to the findings, the areas with the highest dust include those with mining haul roads, transportation, rail lines, dump areas, tailing ponds, backfilling, and coal stockyard sides. This study also showed a significant inverse relationship (R2 = 0.84) among vegetation dust classes, leaf canopy spectrum, and distance from mines. This study provides a new way for estimating dust on vegetation based on advanced hyperspectral remote sensing (PRISMA) and field spectral analysis techniques that may be helpful for vegetation dust monitoring and environmental management in mining sites.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was an integrative assessment of heavy metals associated with urban dust data in Iran (Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz). Samples of urban dust from four sites (traffic, industrial, residential, and Greenland) were collected, and ten heavy metal concentrations were determined using ICP_MS in each sample. The highest average concentrations of metals were at the traffic site for the Mn, Zn, and Cr metals. The PMF model indicates a higher percentage of Pb participation, which shows the importance of traffic resources. The highest non-carcinogenic risk (HI) was for the Cr and the carcinogenic risk was tolerable. To evaluate aerosol and its effects on urban dust, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data were used during 2003-2023. According to the Mankendall test, the trend of AOD has been increasing in Esfahan (p_value < 0.05) and Shiraz. Although Ahvaz's AOD is about two times greater than other cities, the aerosol trend in Ahvaz is decreasing.

ABSTRACT

This work explores the efficiency of honey bees (Apis mellifera) as biosamplers of metal pollution. To understand this, we selected two cities with different urbanization (a medium-sized city and a megacity), and we collected urban dust and honey bees captured during flight. We sampled two villages and a university campus as control areas. The metal content in dust was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the shape and size distribution of the particles, and to characterize the semiquantitative chemical composition of particles adhered to honey bee's wings. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) shows a distinctive urban dust geochemical signature for each city, with component 1 defining V-Cr-Ni-Tl-Pt-Pb-Sb as characteristic of Mexico City and Ce-As-Zr for dust from Hermosillo. Particle count using SEM indicates that 69% and 63.4% of the resuspended dust from Hermosillo and Mexico City, respectively, corresponds to PM2.5. Instead, the particle count measured on the honey bee wings from Hermosillo and Mexico City is mainly PM2.5, 91.4% and 88.9%, respectively. The wings from honey bees collected in the villages and the university campus show much lower particle amounts. AFM-histograms confirmed that the particles identified in Mexico City have even smaller sizes (between 60 and 480 nm) than those in Hermosillo (between 400 and 1400 nm). Particles enriched in As, Zr, and Ce mixed with geogenic elements such as Si, Ca, Mg, K, and Na dominate honey bee' wings collected in Hermosillo. In contrast, those particles collected from Mexico City contain V, Cr, Ni, Tl, Pt, Pb, and Sb. Such results agree with the urban dust data. This work shows that honey bees are suitable biosamplers for the characterization of fine dust fractions by microscopy techniques and reflect the urban pollution of the sites.

Phthalate monoesters (mPAEs) possess biological activity that matches or even exceeds that of their parent compounds, phthalate esters (PAEs), negatively impacting humans. Indoor dust is the main carrier of indoor pollutants. In this study, indoor dust samples were collected from 46 households in Changchun City, Jilin Province, in May 2019, and particulate and flocculent fibrous dust was used as the research target to analyze the concentration and compositional characteristics of mPAEs, primary metabolites of five significant PAEs. The influence of factors such as architectural features and living habits in residential areas on exposure to mPAEs was explored. Ten suspected enzyme genes along with two metabolic pathways with the ability to degrade PAEs were screened using PICRUSt2. The results showed that the total concentrations of the five mPAEs in the indoor dust samples were particulate dust (11.49-78.69 µg/g) and flocculent fibrous dust (21.61-72.63 µg/g), respectively. The molar concentration ratio (RC) of mPAEs to corresponding PAEs significantly differed among chemicals, with MMP/DMP and MEP/DEP sporting the highest RC values. Different bacterial types have shown distinct influences against mPAEs and PAEs. Enzyme function and metabolic pathway abundance had a significant effect on the concentration of some mPAEs, mPAEs are most likely derived from microbial degradation of PAEs.

Bed bugs are considered a major public health problem in industrialized countries. Usually, bed bug infestations are managed using a combination of physical and chemical methods. In recent years, new strategies for bed bug control have emerged, particularly the use of dusts like diatomaceous earth and silicon dioxide. However, in Europe, the use of silicon dioxide is restricted to professional, while diatomaceous earth can be harmful to the lungs. This study aimed to assess bed bug mortality rates associated with Sommières earth, green clay, talc, and sodium bicarbonate compared to silicon dioxide and diatomaceous earth from a pest management company, diatomaceous earth for litter conditioner, and diatomaceous earth from a supermarket. We tested permanent exposure, short exposure, horizontal transfer and repellent effect on two bed bug colonies. Sommières earth demonstrated efficacy ranging from 75% to 100% in permanent and short exposures, similar to the efficacy of diatomaceous earth from the pest management company. On the contrary, diatomaceous earth for litter conditioner and diatomaceous earth from a supermarket, green clay, talc, and sodium bicarbonate were found to be ineffective. This study demonstrates, for the first time, the efficacy of Sommières earth against bed bugs, but also highlights the variability in efficacy of diatomaceous earths on bed bugs depending on their quality.


Title: Lutte contre les punaises de lit avec des poudres : comparaison de l'efficacité du dioxyde de silicium, de la terre de diatomée et de la terre de Sommières. Abstract: Les punaises de lit sont considérées comme un problème de santé publique majeur dans les pays industrialisés. Habituellement, les infestations de punaises de lit sont gérées en utilisant une combinaison de méthodes physiques et chimiques. Ces dernières années, de nouvelles stratégies de lutte contre les punaises de lit ont vu le jour, notamment l'utilisation de poudres comme la terre de diatomées et le dioxyde de silicium. Cependant, en Europe, l'usage du dioxyde de silicium est réservé aux professionnels tandis que la terre de diatomées peut être nocive pour les poumons. Cette étude visait à évaluer les taux de mortalité des punaises de lit associés à la terre de Sommières, à l'argile verte, au talc et au bicarbonate de sodium par rapport au dioxyde de silicium, à la terre de diatomées d'une entreprise de lutte antiparasitaire, à la terre de diatomées pour conditionneur de litière et à la terre de diatomées d'un supermarché. Nous avons testé l'exposition permanente, l'exposition courte, le transfert horizontal et l'effet répulsif sur deux colonies de punaises de lit. La terre de Sommières a démontré une efficacité allant de 75% à 100% en exposition permanente et courte, similaire à l'efficacité de la terre de diatomées d'une entreprise de lutte antiparasitaire. Au contraire, la terre de diatomées pour conditionneur de litière et la terre de diatomées d'un supermarché, l'argile verte, le talc et le bicarbonate de sodium se sont révélés inefficaces. Cette étude démontre, pour la première fois, l'efficacité de la terre de Sommières contre les punaises de lit mais met également en évidence la variabilité de l'efficacité des terres de diatomées sur les punaises de lit en fonction de leur qualité.

The key building blocks for life on Mars could be preserved within potentially habitable paleo-depositional settings with their detection possible by utilizing mid-infrared spectroscopy; however, a definite identification and confirmation of organic or even biological origin will require the samples to be returned to Earth. In the present study, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize both mineralogical and organic materials within Mars dust simulant JSC Mars-1 and ancient Antarctic cyanobacterial microbial mats from 1901 to 1904 Discovery Expedition. When FTIR spectroscopy is applied to cyanobacterial microbial mat communities, the resulting spectra will reflect the average biochemical composition of the mats rather than taxa-specific spectral patterns of the individual organisms and can thus be considered as a total chemical analysis of the mat colony. This study also highlights the potential difficulties in the detection of these communities on Mars and which spectral biosignatures will be most detectable within geological substrates. Through the creation and analysis of a suite of dried microbial mat material and Martian dust simulant mixtures, the spectral signatures and wavenumber positions of CHx aliphatic hydrocarbons and the C-O and O-H bands of polysaccharides remained detectable and may be detectable within sample mixtures obtained through Mars Sample Return activities.

ABSTRACT

Climate change is projected to increase the risk of dust storms, particularly in subtropical dryland, including the southwestern US. Research on dust storm's health impacts in the US is limited and hindered by challenges in dust storm identification. This study assesses the potential link between dust storms and cardiorespiratory emergency department (ED) visits in the southwestern US. We acquired data for 2005-2016 from eight IMPROVE (Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments) sites in Arizona, California, and Utah. We applied a validated algorithm to identify dust storm days at each site. We acquired patient-level ED visit data from state agencies and ascertained visits for respiratory, cardiovascular, and cause-specific subgroups among patients residing in ZIP codes within 50 km of an IMPROVE site. Using a case-crossover design, we estimated short-term associations of ED visits and dust storms, controlling for temporally varying covariates. During 2005-2016, 40 dust storm days occurred at the eight IMPROVE sites. Mean PM10 and PM2.5 levels were three to six times greater on dust storm days compared to non-dust storm days. Over the study period, there were 2 524 259 respiratory and 2 805 925 cardiovascular ED visits. At lags of 1, 2, and 3 days after a dust storm, we observed 3.7% (95% CI: 1.0%, 7.6%), 4.9% (95% CI: 1.1%, 8.9%), and 5.0% (95% CI: 1.3%, 8.9%) elevated odds of respiratory ED visits compared to non-dust storm days. Estimated associations of dust storm days and cardiovascular disease ED visits were largely consistent with the null. Using a monitoring-based exposure metric, we observed associations among dust storms and respiratory ED visits. The results add to growing evidence of the health threat posed by dust storms. The dust storm metric was limited by lack of daily data; future research should consider information from satellite and numerical models to enhance dust storm characterization.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposed a fine dust detection system using time-interleaved counters in which surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors changed the resonance point characteristic. When fine dust was applied to the SAW sensor, the resonance point decreased. The SAW oscillator made of the SAW sensor and radio frequency (RF) amplifier generated an oscillation frequency that was the same as the resonance frequency. The oscillation frequency was transferred to digital data by a 20-bit asynchronous counter. This system has two channels: a sensing channel and a reference channel. Each channel has a SAW oscillator and a 20-bit asynchronous counter. The difference of the two channel counter results is the frequency difference. Through this, it is possible to know whether fine dust adheres to the SAW sensor. The proposed circuit achieved 0.95 ppm frequency resolution when it was operated at a frequency of 460 MHz. This circuit was implemented in a TSMC 130 nm CMOS process.

The aim was to evaluate the prediction of house dust mite allergy in children diagnosed with allergic disease based on their skin moisture and sebum levels. This is a case-control study including children with asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), and atopic dermatitis (AD) and a healthy control group. The participants' skin moisture and sebum levels were measured non-invasively using a digital device. A total of 421 patients and 143 healthy children were included. The median value of skin moisture percentage was statistically significantly lower in asthma, AR, and AD patients compared to the control group (p < 0.001 for each). The median value of skin sebum percentage was significantly lower in asthma and AD patients compared to the control group (p = 0.002 and p = 0.003, respectively). ROC analysis was performed to assess the predictive value of skin moisture percentage for house dust mite allergy in respiratory allergic diseases (asthma and AR) and AD separately. Using a cut-off point of 35.5% for skin moisture in asthma and AR patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 81.3% and 56.5%, respectively. Although the specificity is low, the high sensitivity value is promising. The non-invasive measurement of skin sebum and moisture could provide convenience to clinicians in the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases.

BACKGROUND: House dust mite (HDM) sensitisation can contribute to the development of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (AR) or allergic asthma (AA). As treatment, allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is a promising approach, since it aims building immunotolerance against allergens, therewith establishing long-term efficacy. The evaluation of AIT has been investigated in many randomised controlled trials, whereas few real-world evidence studies are available. METHODS: We used data from the longitudinal prescription data base IQVIA™ LRx. Data on initial AIT prescriptions against HDM from January 2009 to December 2013 was analysed regarding treatment (subcutaneous AIT with either depigmented polymerised allergen extract [dSCIT] or other allergens [oSCIT], or sublingual immunotherapy [SLIT]) and treatment duration. Treatment groups were compared with a control group of AR patients not receiving AIT. Data on symptomatic medication was collected until February 2017 and progression of AR and AA was compared. RESULTS: Data of 7260 patients with AIT prescriptions and of 21,780 control patients was analysed. AIT was associated with a significant decrease of AR medication intake compared with control (dSCIT: -34.0%, p < 0.0001; oSCIT: -25.7%, p < 0.0001; SLIT: -37.7%, p = 0.0026). In asthmatics, SCIT was associated with a significant decrease of asthma medication compared with control (dSCIT: -45.2%, p < 0.0001; oSCIT: -32.9%, p < 0.0001). Further, a significantly reduced likelihood for onset of asthma medication was demonstrated in patients treated with SCIT compared with controls (dSCIT OR: 0.759, p = 0.0476; oSCIT OR: 0.815, p = 0.0339). CONCLUSION: Real-world data analyses indicate that AIT, particularly given via a subcutaneous route, reduces the need of medication against AR and AA and might delay the onset of asthma medication in patients with AR.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiological data suggest that atopic diseases begin in early life and that most cases present clinically during early childhood. The diseases are highly prevalent and increase as communities adopt western lifestyles. Disentangling the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to disease debut is necessary to identify beneficial/harmful exposures so that successful prevention and treatment can be generated. The objective of this review is to explore the definition of atopy and mechanisms of atopic diseases, and to investigate the importance of environmental factors in early life, prior to disease development. First, the distribution of sIgE levels in children is investigated, as this is one of the main criteria for the definition of atopy. Thereafter, it is explored how studies of parental atopic status, sensitization patterns, and early debut and severity of atopic dermatitis have substantiated the theory of an early-life window of opportunity for intervention that precedes the development of atopic diseases in childhood. Then, it is examined whether early-life exposures such as breastfeeding, dogs, cats, and house dust mites in the home perinatally constitute important influencers in this crucial time of life. Finally, it is discussed how these findings could be validated in randomized controlled trials, which might prepare the ground for improved diagnostics and prevention strategies to mitigate the current atopic pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated lignin as a reducing agent instead of fossil carbon for the reduction of zinc oxide and zinc ferrite contained in steelmaking dusts. Three types of dusts from different steelmaking processes were considered: ferrochrome converter (CRC), electric arc furnace stainless steel (EAFSS) and electric arc furnace carbon steel (EAFCS). Zinc is primarily found in zincite phases within CRC dust, while EAFSS and EAFCS dusts contain franklinite and zincite phases as Zn-bearing minerals. The proximate analysis of lignin showed that the fixed carbon content is 28.9%. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mass spectrometry (MS) was used to study the reduction behavior of different mixtures of lignin and steel dusts under inert and air atmospheres. Simultaneously, the minimum ratio of lignin out of three different proportions required to achieve a complete reduction of franklinite and zincite phases into metallic zinc was identified. The results indicated that a 1.1 stoichiometric amount of lignin is sufficient for the complete reduction of zinc-bearing minerals into metallic zinc. In conclusion, lignin can be used efficiently for processing steelmaking dusts.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to empirically evaluate the performance of fibrous materials that meet the criteria for inlet air filtration in internal combustion engines. The characteristics of filtration efficiency and accuracy, as well as the characteristics of flow resistance, were determined based on the mass of dust accumulated in the filter bed during the filtration process. Single-layer filter materials tested included cellulose, polyester, and glass microfiber. Multilayer filter media such as cellulose-polyester-nanofibers and cellulose-polyester were also examined. A new composite filter bed-consisting of polyester, glass microfiber, and cellulose-and its filtration characteristics were evaluated. Utilizing specific air filtration quality factors, it was demonstrated that the composite is characterized by high pre-filtration efficiency (99.98%), a short pre-filtration period (qs = 4.21%), high accuracy (dpmax = 1.5-3 µm) for the entire lifespan of the filter, and a 60-250% higher dust absorption coefficient compared to the other tested materials. A filtration composite bed constructed from a group of materials with different filtration parameters can be, due to its high filtration efficiency, accuracy, and dust absorption, an excellent filter material for engine intake air. The composite's filtration parameters will depend on the type of filter layers and their order relative to the aerosol flow. This paper presents a methodology for the selection and testing of various filter materials.

ABSTRACT

Pneumoconiosis is the most common occupational disease among coal miners, which is a lung disease caused by long-term inhalation of coal dust and retention in the lungs. The early stage of this disease is highly insidious, and pulmonary fibrosis may occur in the middle and late stages, leading to an increase in patient pain index and mortality rate. Currently, there is a lack of effective treatment methods. The pathogenesis of pneumoconiosis is complex and has many influencing factors. Although the characteristics of coal dust have been considered the main cause of different mechanisms of pneumoconiosis, the effects of coal dust composition, particle size and shape, and coal dust concentration on the pathogenesis of pneumoconiosis have not been systematically elucidated. Meanwhile, considering the irreversibility of pneumoconiosis progression, early prediction for pneumoconiosis patients is particularly important. However, there is no early prediction standard for pneumoconiosis among coal miners. This review summarizes the relevant research on the pathogenesis and prediction of pneumoconiosis in coal miners in recent years. Firstly, the pathogenesis of coal worker pneumoconiosis and silicosis was discussed, and the impact of coal dust characteristics on pneumoconiosis was analyzed. Then, the early diagnostic methods for pneumoconiosis have been systematically introduced, with a focus on image collaborative computer-aided diagnosis analysis and biomarker detection. Finally, the challenge of early screening technology for miners with pneumoconiosis was proposed.
