ABSTRACT

The agri-food industry generates substantial waste, leading to significant environmental impacts. Lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonnerat), which is rich in bioactive compounds in its peel, pulp, and seeds, offers an opportunity for waste use. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing a high-carbohydrate diet with varying levels of lychee peel flour on lipid metabolism biomarkers and oxidative stress in a zebrafish (Danio rerio) model. A total of 225 zebrafish, approximately four months old, were divided into five groups: control, high-carbohydrate (HC), HC2%, HC4%, and HC6%. The study did not find significant differences in the growth performance of zebrafish in any group. However, the HC6% group exhibited a significant decrease in glucose and triglyceride levels compared with the HC group. Furthermore, this group showed enhanced activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), along with reduced levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Increased antioxidant activity was also evidenced by DPPH-, ABTS+, and ß-carotene/Linoleic acid assays in the HC6% group. A positive correlation was identified between SOD/CAT activity and in vitro antioxidant assays. These findings suggest that dietary supplementation with 6% lychee peel flour can significantly modulate glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism, and antioxidant activity in zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

Lychee fruit production (Litchi chinensis) has been threatened in many regions of the world where the presence has been reported of the litchii erinose mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer). This study aims to identify the arthropod community associated with A. litchii on lychee plants in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and to seek for potential natural enemies associated with this mite pest in this region. We sampled lychee leaves infested with A. litchii in commercial and non-commercial lychee orchards during seven consecutive months, covering the dry and wet seasons of the year. Arthropods found in association with A. litchii on lychee leaves were collected and identified. The results indicate that a great diversity and abundance of mites and hexapods are associated with A. litchii. A total of 985 and 1872 specimens of mites were identified in commercial and non-commercial areas, respectively, belonging to the families Cheyletidae, Cunaxidae, Eupodidae, Iolinidae, Stigmaeidae, Phytoseiidae, Tarsonemidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tetranychidae, Tryophtydeidae, Tuckerellidae, Tydeidae, Winterschmidtiidae and Xenocaligonellidae and the suborder Oribatida. Among them, Phytoseiidae was the most abundant and diverse family with a total of 11 species identified, in which Phytoseius intermedius was the most abundant predatory mite species collected. Minor specimens of hexapods were also been, belonging to the orders Collembola, Blattodea, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Psocoptera and Thysanoptera. The presence of a high community of predatory mites in association with A. litchii deserves attention and our results indicate that studies to test the potential of these species and the adoption of management practices that enhance this ecological service must be carried out to achieve satisfactory control of the lychee erinose mite in lychee plants.

ABSTRACT

The dielectric properties of litchi fruit were determined using the open-ended coaxial probe method. The measurements were performed in the frequency range from 0.5 to 20 GHz during 3 days of storage at room temperature (~  24 °C). The dielectric properties increased with storage time. Additionally, measurements at different temperatures (24, 30, 40 and 50 °C) were determined. The dielectric constant (ε') decreased with increasing temperature in a frequency range of 0.5-5 GHz; at higher frequencies, ε' increased with increasing temperature. The loss factor (ε″) value increased at frequencies higher than 2 GHz and decreased with increasing temperature. The results will be useful for further applications using microwaves, such as microwave-assisted drying, sensing of quality parameters, modeling, and heating to protect against molds or insects, among other applications.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the morphometric parameters and the amount of adipose tissue of rats fed lychee residues. Methods: in stage 1, the animals were divided into group C (control) and group H (hypercaloric diet); while in stage 2, the animals from group C remained in this group, and the others were divided into group H, group LPF (10% lychee peel flour), and group LSF (10% lychee seed flour). Body Mass Index (BMI) and Lee Index; dietary intake, Food Efficiency Coefficient and Apparent Digestibility; Hepato-Somatic, Visceral Fat (VFI) and Epididymal Fat Indexes (EFI) were evaluated. The data were compared by the Tukey Test at 5%. Results: there was no statistical difference regarding body weight, BMI, food intake, and Hepato-Somatic Index. The LPF group did not differ from group C (p>0.05) regarding the Food Efficiency Coefficient and the amount of adipose tissues (visceral and epididymal). The groups that received the lychee flours did not differ from group C regarding weight gain and Lee Index, however they presented lower Epididymal Fat Index than group H and higher than group C, and the control group (C) presented lower Apparent Dietary Digestibility in both evaluations. Conclusion: lychee peel flour showed the best results, since it did not differ from the control group (C) for some morphometric parameters and the amount of adipose tissues, suggesting that the fibers and polyphenols of this flour promoted the effects identified in this study.

ABSTRACT

Various medicinal plants are traditionally used in a hepatoprotective manner, like, for example, the Litchi chinensis leaf infusion that is employed in Chinese medicine as liver tonics to strengthen hepatic functioning. In this context, the present study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective and acute toxicological effects of hydroethanolic L. chinensis leaf extract in HepG2 cells and mice. Specifically, the cytotoxicity and hepatoprotective activities of L. chinensis leaf extract were evaluated in HepG2 cells and in vivo against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver injury. The administration of CCl4 in mice provokes cell swelling, loss of sinusoid capillary spaces and structural disarrangement of the hepatic lobe, apoptosis and leukocyte infiltration. Further, CCl4 evokes an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in hepatic tissue. However, Silymarin, the positive control, and the L. chinensis extract were able to restore the viability of cells treated with CCl4 at all concentrations evaluated, reduced the inflammatory parameters, TNF and IL-6, reestablished hepatic tissue morphology and did not induce acute toxicological alterations. The data obtained underscore that the extract from L. chinensis leaves features hepatoprotective activity, corroborating with ethnopharmacological use, and does not lead to acute toxicological effects.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Lychee fruit has been studied owing to the presence of several bioactive compounds that can contribute to weight loss in obese individuals. However, the anti-obese potential of the fruit has not been explored yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different parts of lychee in reducing the adipose tissue mass of cafeteria diet-fed rats. Phenolic compounds and scavenging capacities were quantified. The food intake, apparent digestibility, weight of the body and liver, body mass, Lee Index, and the mass of epididymal and visceral adipose tissues were evaluated. The results were estimated by Tukey's Test at 5% probability. A higher amount of phenolic compounds and scavenging capacity were observed in the peel of lychee as compared to the other parts of the fruit. The hypercaloric diet with lychee flour resulted in a higher apparent digestibility. There was no difference between groups control (C), hypercaloric (H), hypercaloric with lychee flour - 50.00% peel and 50.00% seeds (H2F), and hypercaloric with lychee flour - 33.33% peel, 33.33% pulp and 33.34% seeds (H3F) with respect to body and liver weight, corporal mass, and Lee Index. The hypercaloric diet-fed group exhibited an increase in visceral and epididymal adipose tissue mass, whereas the group fed with hypercaloric diets and flour made from the peel and seed of lychee presented a lower visceral adipose tissue mass. In conclusion, the use of lychee flour was considered viable because it decreased visceral adipose tissue mass in rats.

ABSTRACT

In an attempt to obtain shelf-stable litchi fruit with preserved nutritional quality and good sensory features, quarters of peeled and pitted fruits were vacuum dried at 50, 60 and 70 °C at a constant pressure of 8.0 kPa. The product was assessed for its vitamin C, total phenolics and texture (hardness). In addition, the product with the best texture was assessed for its shelf-life by means of accelerated testing. Results suggest that vacuum dried litchi retained almost 70% of the vitamin C and total phenolics when compared to frozen fruits (control). Vitamin C and phenolic compounds content significantly decreased with drying, while no difference was found between different drying temperatures. Hardness increased with drying temperature. The sample dried at 70 °C presented crispness, which is a desired quality feature in dried fruit products. This sample was subjected to shelf-life evaluation, whose result suggests a shelf-life of eight months at 23 °C. Total color change (CIE ΔE00) was the expiry criterion. Vacuum drying was a suitable technique for producing shelf-stable litchi fruit with good texture while preserving its desirable original nutrients. Consumption of vacuum dried litchi may be beneficial to health due to its remarkable content of phenolic compounds and vitamin C.

ABSTRACT

Actually, there has been an increase in the use of natural products as skin photoprotective agents. In this way, the aim of present study was to investigate the L. chinensis leaves extract photochemoprotection potential and photosafety using in vitro methods. The extract cytotoxicity, cytoprotection and photochemoprotection against UVA and UVB radiation were assayed in L929 cells. The DNA damage was evaluated by comet assay. DCFH-DA, SOD, CAT and GSH assays were employed to verify the oxidative stress. We also determined the spectrophotometric Solar Protection Factor (SPF) of the extract. The photosafety was evaluated in red blood cells (RBC). In addition, the HET-CAM and agarose overlay tests were employed to evaluate the irritant potential. The results obtained show that extract is not cytotoxic and present cytoprotective activity against H2O2 and is able to protect the cells against DNA damage induced by UVA and UVB radiation. The extract was able to reduce the ROS production. The SPF obtained was 18.9 at 1mg/mL. We demonstrate that L. chinensis extract is photosafe and protect RBCs against oxidative damage, and did not induce irritation. Data herein obtained pointed out the potential of L. chinensis extract for photochemoprotection against UVA/UVB radiation and its damaging effects on human skin.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The fruits of Litchi chinensis Sonn., Sapindaceae, are renowned for their biological activities. However, their leaves are poorly explored, although they represent an important source of vegetable raw material with biological properties as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive. An HPLC method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of epicatechin and procyanidin A2 in the leaf hydroethanolic extract of L. chinensis. The markers and other unidentified components were separated on a Luna Phenomenex C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) with mobile phase composed of acetonitrile: water pH 3.0 (with sulfuric acid), in a gradient run; at 1.0 ml min-1, 30 ºC and 278 nm for detection. The method was linear over an epicatechin and procyanidin A2 concentration range of 10–100 µg ml-1. The Limit of Quantification for epicatechin and procyanidin A2 were 1.7 and 2 µg ml-1, respectively. The Relative Standard Deviation (%) values for markers (intra- and inter-day precision studies) were <4.0% and the accuracy was 100 ± 5%. The method was applied to ten samples collected in the state of Santa Catarina (Brazil), which showed 14.8–44.5 and 44.8–69.6 mg g-1 of epicatechin and procyanidin A2, respectively. The proposed method could be a valuable tool for quality assessment of L. chinenis leaves as well as their herbal derivatives.

ABSTRACT

The litchi erineum mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer) is found in all producing regions attacking leaves and flowers of litchi plants. The mite attack young leaves and causes the erinea on leaf surface, which later become brown galls with velvety appearance. Severe attacks can cause leaf drop and destruction of branches end directly production affecting. In 2009 year it was registered a heavy infestation of the pest on litchi plants (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) in the municipality of Casa Branca, São Paulo, Brazil (2127O; 4702S; 679 m altitude). In June, many galls caused by mite infestation showed a mycelium of white coloration and many eriophyid dead. The fungus was identified as Hirsutella thompsonii (Fischer). The results suggest that galls may facilitate the fungus development and its permanence on the plants. Thus, the possibility of mite biological control with H. thompsonii should be investigated.
