ABSTRACT

Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient second only to nitrogen (N) in the drylands of the world. Most previous studies have focused on N transformation processes in grassland ecosystems, particularly under artificial fertilization with N and atmospheric N deposition. However, P cycling processes under natural conditions and when P is applied as an inorganic P fertilizer have been understudied. Therefore, it is essential to examine the fate of applied P in grassland ecosystems that have experienced long-term grazing and, under certain circumstances, continuous hay harvest. We conducted a 3-year field experiment with the addition of multiple nutrient elements in a typical meadow steppe to investigate the fate of the applied P in various fractions of P pools in the top soil. We found that the addition of multiple nutrients significantly increased P concentrations in the labile inorganic P (Lab-Pi) and moderately occluded inorganic P (Mod-Pi) fractions but not in the recalcitrant inorganic P (Rec-Pi) fraction. An increase in the concentration of total inorganic P was found only when P and N were applied together. However, the addition of other nutrients did not change P concentrations in any fraction of the mineral soil. The addition of P and N significantly increased the total amount of P taken up by the aboveground plants but had no effect on the levels of organic and microbial P in the soil. Together, our results indicate that the P applied in this grassland ecosystem is taken up by plants, leaving most of the unutilized P as Lab-Pi and Mod-Pi rather than being immobilized in Rec-Pi or by microbial biomass. This implies that the grassland ecosystem that we studied has a relatively low P adsorption capacity, and the application of inorganic P to replenish soil P deficiency in degraded grasslands due to long-term grazing of livestock or continuous harvest of forage in the region could be a practical management strategy to maintain soil P fertility.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Selenium deficiency is a primary risk factor of Kashin-Beck disease (KBD). This study aimed to investigate whether children in endemic areas could maintain sufficient selenium intake after termination of selenium supplement administration, and evaluate their comprehensive nutritional status and dietary structure. METHODS: Duplicate portion sampling combined with a questionnaire was adopted to collect data on categories and quantity of all food ingested in three consecutive days. Occipital hair was also collected to detect selenium content by hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HGAFS). CDGSS3.0 software and factor analysis were integrated to assess the children's comprehensive nutritional status and dietary structure. RESULTS: This study included 240 sex-matched (1:1) children aged 7-12 years from KBD endemic (n = 120) and non-endemic (n = 120) areas. Overall, 720 solid food, 720 liquid, and 240 hair samples were collected for selenium determination. The mean selenium level in hair of children in endemic areas (0.38 ± 0.16 mg/kg) was significantly lower than that in children in non-endemic areas (0.56 ± 0.28 mg/kg, Z = -5.249, p < 0.001). The dietary selenium intake of children in endemic areas was 40.0% lower than that in children in non-endemic areas (Z = -9.374, p < 0.001). Children in endemic areas consumed significantly less diverse dietary items leading to significantly less intake of multiple nutrients compared to children in non-endemic areas. CONCLUSIONS: The dietary selenium intake of most children in endemic areas was less than the recommended amount. The dietary structure of children was undiversified, which limited the intake of multiple nutrients. Therefore, comprehensive nutrition rather than sole selenium intake should be the primary concern in the future.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study explored the effect of multiple-nutrient supplementation on muscle damage and liver and kidney function after vigorous exercise under heat. Methods: After an initial pilot trial comprising 89 male participants, 85 participants were recruited and assigned into three groups: a multiple-nutrient (M) group, a glucose (G) group, and a water (W) group. Multiple-nutrient supplements contain glucose, fructose, maltose, sodium, potassium, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin C, vitamin K, and taurine. Participants were organised to take a 3-km running test (wet-bulb globe temperature 32°C) after a short-term (7 days) supplement. Blood samples were obtained to detect biochemical parameters [glucose (GLU), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and lactic acid], inflammation factors [interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)], and oxidative stress biomarkers [superoxide dismutase (SOD) and 8-iso-prostaglandin F (2alpha) (8-iso-PGF2α)]. Results: In the pilot trial, BUN decreased significantly in the M and G groups immediately after the running test. AST, Cr, and UA were significantly reduced 24 h after the running test with single-shot multiple-nutrient supplementation. In the short-term trial, multiple nutrients further prevented the elevation of CK (p = 0.045) and LDH (p = 0.033) levels 24 h after strenuous exercise. Moreover, we found that multiple nutrients significantly reduced IL-6 (p = 0.001) and TNF-α (p = 0.015) elevation immediately after exercise. Simultaneously, SOD elevation was significantly higher in the M group immediately after exercising than in the other two groups (p = 0.033). 8-iso-PGF2α was reduced in the M group 24 h after exercise (p = 0.036). Conclusions: This study found that multiple-nutrient supplementation promoted the recovery of muscle damage and decreased liver and kidney function caused by strenuous exercise in a hot environment, probably through the inhibition of secondary damage induced by increased inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress. In this respect, the current study has important implications for the strategy of nutritional support to accelerate recovery and potentially prevent heat-related illness. This study was prospectively registered on clinicaltrials.gov on June 21, 2019 (ID: ChiCTR1900023988).

ABSTRACT

Although the effect of isolated nutrients on plasma parathyroid hormone (PTH) is somewhat familiar, the effect of multiple nutrients on plasma PTH level has not yet been studied. The aim of this study was to identify groups of food items that are associated with the plasma PTH level in healthy individuals. This cross-sectional study enrolled 1180 healthy individuals from Croatia with plasma PTH levels inside the referent values. A food frequency questionnaire containing 58 food items was completed to evaluate the dietary intake. We used principal component analysis to reduce food items into dietary groups, followed by linear regression analysis to test the association between dietary groups and the level of PTH. The results indicate that different sorts of vegetables (p = .006), sausages, salami, mushrooms, eggs (p = .033), as well as white bread (p = .009) are associated with the increase, while bran bread (p = .009) is associated with the decreased plasma PTH level.

ABSTRACT

Waste activated sludge is a valuable resource containing multiple nutrients, but is currently treated and disposed of as an important source of pollution. In this work, waste activated sludge after ultrasound pretreatment was reused as multiple nutrients for biofuel production. The nutrients trapped in sludge floc were transferred into liquid medium by ultrasonic disintegration during first 30 min, while further increase of pretreatment time only resulted in slight increase of nutrients release. Hydrogen production by Ethanoligenens harbinense B49 from glucose significantly increased with the concentration of ultrasonic sludge, and reached maximum yield of 1.97 mol H2/mol glucose at sludge concentration of 7.75 g volatile suspended solids/l. Without addition of any other chemicals, waste molasses rich in carbohydrate was efficiently turned into hydrogen with yield of 189.34 ml H2/g total sugar by E. harbinense B49 using ultrasonic sludge as nutrients. The results also showed that hydrogen production using pretreated sludge as multiple nutrients was higher than those using standard nutrients. Acetic acid produced by E. harbinense B49 together with the residual nutrients in the liquid medium were further converted into hydrogen (271.36 ml H2/g total sugar) by Rhodopseudomonas faecalis RLD-53 through photo fermentation, while ethanol was the sole end product with yield of 220.26 mg/g total sugar. Thus, pretreated sludge was an efficient nutrients source for biofuel production, which could replace the standard nutrients. This research provided a novel strategy to achieve environmental friendly sludge disposal and simultaneous efficient biofuel recovery from organic waste.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elucidating the stoichiometry and resorption patterns of multiple nutrients is an essential requirement for a holistic understanding of plant nutrition and biogeochemical cycling. However, most studies have focused on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and largely ignored other nutrients. The current study aimed to determine relationships between resorption patterns and leaf nutrient status for 13 nutrient elements in a karst vegetation region. METHODS: Plant and soil samples were collected from four vegetation types in the karst region of south-western China and divided into eight plant functional types. Samples of newly expanded and recently senesced leaves were analysed to determine concentrations of boron (B), calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), N, sodium (Na), P, sulphur (S) and zinc (Zn). KEY RESULTS: Nutrient concentrations of the karst plants were lower than those normally found in other regions of China and the rest of the world, and plant growth was mainly limited by P. Overall, four nutrients revealed resorption [N (resorption efficiency 34·6 %), P (48·4 %), K (63·2 %) and Mg (13·2 %)], seven nutrients [B (-16·1 %), Ca (-44·0 %), Cu (-14·5 %), Fe (-205·5 %), Mn (-72·5 %), Mo (-35·6 %) and Zn (-184·3 %)] showed accumulation in senesced leaves and two nutrients (Na and S) showed no resorption or accumulation. Resorption efficiencies of K and Mg and accumulation of B, Ca, Fe and Mn differed among plant functional types, and this strongly affected litter quality. Resorption efficiencies of N, P and K and accumulation of Ca and Zn increased with decreasing concentrations of these nutrients in green leaves. The N:P, N:K and N:Mg ratios in green leaves predicted resorption proficiency for N, K and Mg, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The results emphasize the fact that nutrient resorption patterns strongly depend on element and plant functional type, which provides new insights into plant nutrient use strategies and nutrient cycling in karst ecosystems.
