Infectious diseases can become pandemics and constitute health emergencies. They destabilize health systems and the economic, political, social and environmental life of a country. In a pandemic situation, there is a progressive increase in the demand for care, which responds to the epidemic curve and requires health systems to reorganize their resources in terms of patient care. This paper presents the main management strategies adopted at the Central Military Hospital Dr. Luis Díaz Soto in the preparation of the institution to face COVID-19. Once the task was clarified, the institution defined its mission, vision, general objectives and quality policy for medical assistance in this health situation. Three fundamental activities were carried out: the creation of a central command post, the definition of the areas classified as red zones and the reorganization of healthcare activities, which included the elements of biosafety assurance. The hospital indicators used to analyze the results of care activities on a monthly basis included the occupancy rate, average length of stay, case fatality, and gross and net mortality. The management strategy allowed the organization of the institution to face the pandemic(AU)

The biosafety of four potentially probiotic lactobacilli strains, isolated from artisanal Mexican Cocido cheese, was assessed through in vitro tests aimed to determine (1) the antibiotic susceptibility profile by broth microdilution, (2) the transferability of antibiotic resistance determinants by filter-mating, and (3) the phenotypic and genotypic stability during serial batch sub-culture (100-day period) by evaluating physiological and probiotic features and RAPD-PCR fingerprinting. Lactobacilli strains exhibited multidrug-resistance; however, resistance determinants were not transferred in the filter-mating assay. Significant (p < 0.05) differences were observed in bacterial morphology and some functional and technological properties when strains were serially sub-cultured over 50 generations (G50), compared to the initial cultures (G0). Conversely, the strains did not show mucinolytic and hemolytic activities either at G0 or after 100 generations (G100). Genetic polymorphism and genomic template instability on selected strains were detected, which suggest possible evolutionary arrangements that may occur when these bacteria are largely cultured. Our findings suggest that the assessed strains did not raise in vitro biosafety concerns; however, complementary studies are still needed to establish the safe potential applications in humans and animals.

AIM: Biosafety is a set of preventive measures aimed at controlling risk factors arising from biological, physical, and/or chemical agents. This topic is particularly important in the dental field since saliva is the main biological agent of the transmission of coronavirus. The present study aimed to determine the factors associated with the level of knowledge about biosafety against COVID-19 in Peruvian dentistry students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study evaluated 312 Peruvian dentistry students. A validated 20-question questionnaire was used to measure the level of knowledge. The nonparametric Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare levels of knowledge between categories of each variable. A logit model was used to evaluate associated factors such as sex, age, marital status, place of origin, academic year of study, being in the academic upper third, history of COVID-19, and living with vulnerable family members. A significance level of p < 0.05 was considered. RESULTS: 36.2%, 31.4%, and 32.4% presented poor, fair, and good knowledge levels, respectively. Students under 25 years of age were 64% less likely to pass the biosafety against COVID-19 questionnaire than students 25 years of age and older (OR = 0.36; CI: 0.20-0.66). Students in the academic upper third were nine times more likely to pass the test than other students (OR = 9.38; CI: 4.61-19.07). Finally, third-year students were 52% less likely to pass the exam than fifth-year students (OR = 0.48; CI: 0.28-0.83). CONCLUSION: Only a minority of dentistry students had a good level of knowledge about biosafety against COVID-19. Younger and less educated students were more likely to fail the questionnaire. On the other hand, those students with outstanding academic performance were more likely to pass the questionnaire.

Prevention and control strategies for the COVID-19 pandemic include behavioral approaches and that identify potential intervention scenarios, such as the training process for health professionals. The aim of the present study was to analyze knowledge, attitudes and practices about COVID-19 and associated factors in dentistry students. This is a cross-sectional study with dentistry students from Higher Education Institutions in the state of Ceará, Brazil. 288 students regularly enrolled in Higher Education Institutions participated in the research. The sample showed a high frequency of adequacy of knowledge, attitudes and practices for the prevention of COVID-19. The relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and their knowledge, attitudes and practices showed an association between the student's place of residence and distance from the nearest Basic Health Unit. Most students who live in both rural and urban areas have adequate practices regarding COVID-19, as well as most students who live near or far from the nearest Basic Health Unit also have knowledge, attitudes and practices appropriate. The low risk of infection observed in the studied sample, as well as the adequate level of knowledge, attitudes and practices considered adequate about COVID-19 do not exempt the need for continuous educational processes related to biosafety protocols (AU).

This is a quantitative-qualitative study analyzing the return of on-site activities in Brazilian dentistry undergraduate courses during the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficulties faced, comparing public and private institutions. An online form with open and multiple-choice questions was sent via e-mail to the representatives of dentistry courses from March to June 2021. The courses included were those registered on the e-MEC webpage that had started up to 2017. The quantitative analysis employed the chi-square, the Fisher exact, and the T student tests (p<0.05); the open question was subjected to thematic content analysis. Out of the 329 eligible courses, 83 forms were answered and returned (21 public and 62 private). Public institution courses showed lower frequency of return to on-site activities up tothe data collection (p=0.038), and presented higher proportion of suspension of clinical and laboratory activities (p≤0.001), but no difference regarding remote theoretical lessons (p>0.05). Private courses showed higher availability of resources supporting the return to on-site activities, namely, structure, workers, and professors (p<0.001). Although biosafety norms presented a common challenge, the main difficulties reported in private institutions related to the return to on-site activities were the modulation and schedule of the classes and lesson environments, controlling the flow of people, and the implementation of protocols. Public institutions highlighted difficulties related to adjustment of the structure and material acquisition. The results showed that most dentistry courses had returned to on-site lessons in the early 2021, but private institutions reported higher proportion of return to on-site laboratory and clinical activities (AU).

Nanoparticles are widely used in the biomedical field for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes due to their small size, high carrier capacity, and ease of modification, which enable selective targeting and as contrast agents. Over the past decades, more and more nanoparticles have received regulatory approval to enter the clinic, more nanoparticles have shown potential for clinical translation, and humans have increasing access to them. However, nanoparticles have a high potential to cause unpredictable adverse effects on human organs, tissues, and cells due to their unique physicochemical properties and interactions with DNA, lipids, cells, tissues, proteins, and biological fluids. Currently, issues, such as nanoparticle side effects and toxicity, remain controversial, and these pitfalls must be fully considered prior to their application to body systems. Therefore, it is particularly urgent and important to assess the safety of nanoparticles acting in living organisms. In this paper, we review the important factors influencing the biosafety of nanoparticles in terms of their properties, and introduce common methods to summarize the biosafety evaluation of nanoparticles through in vitro and in body systems.

Introduction: The pandemic caused by the COVID-19 has had a great impact on education. Currently, the challenges of the progressive return to face-to-face educational activities are being faced. Objective: To determine the measures that have the greatest impact in a context of progres-sive return to classroom activities indoors.Material and methods: Synthesis of published information, through the implementation of keywords in the search (return, biosecurity, vaccination, COVID-19, universities, mask, ven-tilation, fomites, body temperature, crowding, antibodies) in virtual platforms such: Pubmed, google scholar, Elsevier that supports the information on the application of biosafety measu-res that allow the return to face-to-face classes. Results: The correct use of masks, frequent hygiene, social distancing, capacity respect, and the ventilation of closed environments are essential measures that must be controlled by a committee to reduce the probability of contagion, the measurement of body temperature as screening of cases is questionable, regulatory measures are necessary in the transport of vehicles and terminals, fomites on surfaces play a minimal role in the transmission of the COVID-19, rapid tests are a practical and reliable option for tracking active cases, and vacci-nated population should continue to adopt biosafety measures. Conclusions: The feasibility of returning to in-person classes depends on external factors: mobility and transportation of students and their economic situation, and internal factors: im-plementation and fulfillment with the afore mentioned measures, which will be achieved with an adequate management of the economic resources assigned to the universities.

Introduction. A biological accident is an exposure of health personnel to potentially infectious fluids. When these accidents occur, they should always be considered a high priority for the protection of health personnel. The most affected population is the nursing staff, cleaning staff and doctors. Objectives.Describe the frequency of accidents with sharp objects in health personnel in a tertiary hospital, reports to relevant authorities, vaccination for hepatitis B and participation in biosafety training. Materials and methods. An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study is carried out through an online survey by Google Forms™ to health professionals. Results. Were obtained 26 responses, which 92,3% belonged to medical personnel, 7,7% were graduates or nursing technicians. The 57,7% of the people were male. The 88,5% reported having immunization against Hepatitis B. 6 out of 10 accidents were reported. Conclusion. Most of the results equal the bibliography, like the number of accidents reported, percentage of vaccination against Hepatitis B, and the motives they weren't reported.
