ABSTRACT

Pulmonary sequestration (PS) happens when an area of the lung receives its arterial blood supply from systemic circulation, resulting in a non-functional lesion (Intralobar or extralobar). Hydatid cyst results from infection of the tapeworm Echinococcus. We report a case of hydatid cyst existed concurrently with intralobar PS. A 12-year-old girl presented with recurrent hemoptysis of 2 years duration. Serology for Echinococcus granulosus was positive. CT chest suggested intralobar PS in the right middle lobe, which was surgically removed. In conclusion, recurrent localized pulmonary infections should raise the suspicion of intralobar PS which may rarely coexist with hydatid cyst.

ABSTRACT

A patient presented with a cavitating lung lesion. Serology and sputum microscopy led to the diagnosis of pulmonary hydatid disease. However, histology of the operative samples revealed aspergillosis in the cavity and surrounding lung tissue. This is the first report of invasive aspergillosis occurring as a consequence of spontaneous hydatid cyst rupture.

ABSTRACT

We report a 50 years old female who was admitted to our clinic for investigation of pneumonia. She had responded to antibiotics but full regresson was not observed. Chest x-rays demonstrated lobar consolidation. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a vegetative whitish membranous material in the medial segment of right middle lobe. Pathological and microbiological examination of the bronchoscopic material showed features of a pulmonary hydatid cyst with cuticle. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology and lobe resection. Patient had presented in an unusual way for diagnosis of hydatid cyst.

ABSTRACT

Experiments were carried out on animal species. The experiments used 30-day chicks, 80 rats, and 70 rabbits. Three hundred and twenty-nine patients with echinococcus complicated by paecilomycosis were meticulously examined. The fungi of the genus Paecilomyces undergo two transformation directions: the saprotrophic mycelial form of the fungus Paecilomyces variotii transforms to the tissue parasitic one as a globular form of spherules that transforms to the mycelial form in larval Echinococcus infection because the cyst capsule is a favorable environment for growth of fungal mycelia. The growth and aggressiveness of larval Echinococcus in the human lung are associated with the fact that fungal mycelial fibrous tunic contains Paecilomyces that have been first used to isolate active hyaluronidase that lyses host cells. Pulmonary echinococcosis complicated by the tissue form of paecilomycosis can be complicated by the mycelial form of the fungus of the genus Paecilomyces, by afflicting the nails and skin of patients, which requires particular treatment after surgery for hydatid disease. The chicks that had been brooded in an incubator and grown under special conditions to rule out fungal infection were first contaminated with the fungal mycelium labeled with methionine, sodium sulfate, sodium phosphate, or iodine. Each chick received 0.5 g of the labeled fungal mycelium. Regardless of the contamination mode, all the chicks from 3 groups were infected with Paecilomyces; the spherules exhibited labeled isotopes. Thus, it has been first conclusively proven that the diagnosis of paecilomycosis based on the blood detection of fungal globular spherules is valid and easy-to-use in any health care facility.

ABSTRACT

Colonization with Aspergillus sp. usually occurs in previously formed lung cavities. Cystectomy is a widely used surgical technique for hydatid lung disease that can also leave residual cavities and potentially result in aspergilloma. We present two cases of this rare entity and a case with Aspergillus sp. colonization of an existing ruptured hydatid cyst.
