PURPOSE: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have enhanced survival in advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients, but their efficacy varies. Cachexia, characterized by muscle loss and significant weight loss, might influence ICI response. This study examines the relationship between cachexia's longitudinal changes and ICI outcomes in ESCC patients. METHODS: ESCC patients undergoing at least two ICI cycles from 2017 to 2021 were studied. Cachexia's baseline and evolving patterns during ICI treatment were observed. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to assess cachexia's effect on ICI efficacy. Chi-square tests were used to determine cachexia's link to immune-related adverse effects (irAEs). RESULTS: Two hundred seventy-eight ICI-treated patients had a median progression-free survival (PFS) of 5.78 months and overall survival (OS) of 8.3 months. Pretreatment cachexia led to worse outcomes: PFS 7.87 versus 5.3 months, time to progression (TTP) 10.9 versus 6.1 months, and OS 14.3 versus 9.2 months. Irreversible cachexia showed the poorest results. Cachexia's changes weren't associated with irAEs. CONCLUSION: Baseline and evolving cachexia significantly impact ICI efficacy in ESCC patients. Continuous cachexia monitoring during ICI therapy is crucial for optimal ESCC management.

PURPOSE: Surgery for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is characterized by a poor prognosis and high complication rate, resulting in a heavy symptom burden and poor health-related quality of life (QOL). We evaluated longitudinal patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to analyze the correlations between symptoms and QOL and their changing characteristics during postoperative rehabilitation. METHODS: We investigated patients with ESCC who underwent minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy at Sichuan Cancer Hospital between April 2019 and December 2019. Longitudinal data of the clinical characteristics and PROs were collected. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QOL questionnaires were used to assess symptoms and QOL and compare the trajectories of PROs during the investigation. RESULTS: A total of 244 patients with ESCC were enrolled in this study. Regarding QOL, role and emotional functions returned to baseline at 1 month after surgery, and cognitive and social functions returned to baseline at 3 months after surgery. However, physical function and global QOL did not return to baseline at 1 year after surgery. At 7 days and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, the main symptoms of the patients were negatively correlated with physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functions and the overall health status (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with ESCC experience reduced health-related QOL and persisting symptoms after minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy, but a recovery trend was observed within 1 month. The long-term QOL after esophagectomy is acceptable.

BACKGROUND: The effect of human 8-Oxoguanine DNA Glycosylase (hOGG1) on exogenous chemicals in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain unclear. The study plans to determine hOGG1 expression levels in ESCC and possible interactions with known environmental risk factors in ESCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed levels of exposure to urinary nitrosamines in volunteers from high and low prevalence areas by GC-MS. And we performed the interaction between hOGG1 gene and nitrosamine disinfection by-products by analyzing hOGG1 gene expression in esophageal tissues. RESULTS: In ESCC, nitrosamine levels were significantly increased and hOGG1 mRNA expression levels were significantly decreased. There was a statistically significant interaction between reduced hOGG1 mRNA levels and non-tap drinking water sources in ESCC. The apparent indirect association between ESCC and NMEA indicated that 33.4% of the association between ESCC and NMEA was mediated by hOGG1. CONCLUSION: In populations which exposed to high levels of environmental pollutants NDMA, low expression of hOGG1 may promote the high incidence of esophageal cancer in Huai'an. hOGG1 may be a novel mediator in nitrosamine-induced esophageal tumorigenesis.

BACKGROUND: Coagulation factor XI deficiency is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease with a low incidence. It usually occurs after surgery or trauma; Esophageal cancer is a common malignant tumor of the digestive tract in China. But so far, surgery-based comprehensive treatment of esophageal cancer still dominates. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of an Asian patient with XI factor deficiency and lower esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who was admitted to our hospital recently. After active preoperative preparation, the operation was successfully performed, and there was no obvious abnormal bleeding during and after the operation. CONCLUSIONS: Coagulation factor XI deficiency is a relatively rare disease, and patients with the disease will face a greater risk of bleeding during the perioperative period. The encouraging perioperative outcome enables us to have a deeper understanding of surgical treatment strategies for patients with Coagulation factor XI deficiency.

Esophageal cancer is a malignant disease with a poor prognosis and is one of the most common causes of cardiac metastasis. Malignant pericarditis may cause the repetitive accumulation of pericardial effusion, which can occasionally pose a clinical challenge. We herein report a case of malignant pericarditis in a patient with metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with cardiac tamponade, which was successfully managed with single pericardial drainage and systemic nivolumab monotherapy. This is the first case report to suggest that systemic therapy with nivolumab is a promising option for the management of malignant pericarditis.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with esophageal varices (EVs) are obscure. We aimed to elucidate the clinical outcomes of ESD for ESCC with EVs in a multicenter, retrospective study. METHODS: We established a retrospective cohort of 30 patients with ESCC complicating EVs, who underwent ESD at 11 Japanese institutions. Rates of en bloc resection and R0 resection, procedure time, and adverse events were evaluated as indicators of the feasibility and safety of ESD. Additional treatment, recurrence, and metastasis of the lesions were evaluated as indicators of the long-term efficacy of ESD. RESULTS: Portal hypertension was caused by cirrhosis, of which alcohol was the most common cause. En bloc resection was achieved in 93.3% and R0 resection in 80.0% of the patients. The median procedure time was 92 min. Adverse events included a case of uncontrolled intraoperative bleeding leading to discontinuation of ESD and a case of esophageal stricture due to extensive resection. During the follow-up period of a median for 42 months, a patient with local recurrence and another patient with liver metastasis were observed. One patient died of liver failure after receiving chemoradiotherapy as an additional treatment after ESD. No patient died of ESCC. CONCLUSION: This multicenter, retrospective cohort study demonstrated the safety and efficacy of ESD for ESCC with EVs. Further studies are needed to establish appropriate treatment methods for EVs before ESD and additional treatments for patients with insufficient ESD.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal cancer (EC) is a frequent gastrointestinal malignancy. The most common types of EC pathology worldwide are esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Although surgical resection is still the main treatment modality for EC, most patients are already lost to surgery at the time of presentation due to the late stage. In recent years, the development of radiation therapy (RT) combined with targeted therapy (TT) and immunization therapy (IT) has brought more options for the treatment of EC. During radiation therapy, the radiation therapy area is very close to the trachea and esophagus, so radiation therapy may cause damage to the tissues of the trachea and esophagus, which is also known as a tracheoesophageal fistula (TF). We present the case of an EC patient who developed TF during radiation therapy and gradually improved after a combination of anlotinib and immunotherapy. METHODS: The patient was diagnosed with poorly differentiated ESCC by pathological biopsy and treated with "lobaplatin + Tegafur Gimeracil Oteracil Porassium Capsule" for 5 cycles. RESULTS: CT scan of the chest showed progression after treatment. During RT, the patient developed radiotherapy-related adverse effects, which were relieved by symptomatic support therapy. At the end of RT, the patient developed TF, but we chose to let the patient continue his radiation treatment plan with the anti-angiogenic drug "anlotinib." CONCLUSION: After radiation therapy, the patient continued to be treated with anlotinib and immunotherapy with camrelizumab, and the patient's lesion improved.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a severe complication following esophagectomy with high mortality. Perioperative decreased serum albumin level is considered a predictive of AL, however, its impact on AL incidence in patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) followed by minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) is not well defined. METHODS: The data of 318 consecutive esophageal cancer patients who underwent MIE were collected retrospectively from January 2021 to December 2021. The perioperative level of albumin was detected and the baseline of altering levels for albumin was established. The incidence of postoperative complications and survival rate were analyzed between groups. RESULTS: After exclusion, 137 patients were enrolled and assigned to more decreased albumin (MA) and less decreased albumin (LA) groups. The levels of albumin descended significantly after MIE (p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the clinicopathologic characteristics or surgical outcomes between groups. The incidence of postoperative AL was 10.2% in MA group and 1.4% in LA group (p = 0.033). Three patients died due to AL in MA group, while no mortality was observed in LA group (p = 0.120). The rate of other postoperative complications was similar between groups. Progression-free survival (PFS) in LA group was a little higher than that in MA group, but it was no significant difference (p = 0.853). Similarly, no difference was observed in overall survival (OS) between groups (p = 0.277). CONCLUSIONS: Severely deficient serum albumin after MIE was an indicator of AL in esophageal cancer patients treated with NCT. Introduction: Poor oral hygiene is linked to high risks of many systemic diseases, including cancers. Oral dysbiosis is closely associated with poor oral hygiene, causing tooth loss, gingivitis, and periodontitis. We provide a summary of studies and discuss the risk factors for oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) from a microbial perspective in this review.Methods: A literature search of studies published before December 31, 2022 from PubMed, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library was performed. The search strategies included the following keywords: (1) oral care, oral health, oral hygiene, dental health, dental hygiene, tooth loss, teeth loss, tooth absence, missing teeth, edentulism, tooth brushing, mouthwash, and tooth cleaning; (2) esophageal, esophagus, oesophagus, and oesophageal; (3) cancer, carcinoma, tumor, and neoplasm.Discussion: Poor oral health, indicated by infrequent tooth brushing, chronic periodontitis, and tooth loss, has been associated with an increased risk of squamous dysplasia and ESCC. Oral microbial diversity and composition are profoundly dysregulated during oesophageal tumorigenesis. Similar to the oral microbiota, the oesophageal microbiota varies distinctly in multiple bacterial taxa in ESCC and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, both of which have high co-occurrence rates in the "Oesophageal Cancer Belt". In addition, the potential roles of oncogenic viruses in ESCC have also been discussed. We also briefly explore the potential mechanisms underlying the tumor-promoting role of dysregulated microbiota for the development of therapeutic targeting strategies.Conclusion: Poor oral health is an established risk indicator of ESCC. The dysbiosis of microbiota in upper gastrointestinal tract that highly resembles the oral microbial ecosystem but with distinct features at individual sites contributes to the development and progression of ESCC.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has a very high incidence rate in northeastern Iran. Our team previously reported the BReast CAncer gene 2 (BRCA2) p.K3326* mutation as a moderately penetrant ESCC susceptibility variant in northern Iran (odds ratio (OR) = 3.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.74-7.59, P = 0.0003). Recently, it has been reported that aldehydes can induce BRCA2 haploinsufficiency in cells with a heterozygous pathogenic BRCA2 mutation and predispose them to carcinogenic effects. Based on this observation, we speculate that dysfunctional variants in Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 Family Member (ALDH2) may result in aldehyde-induced BRCA2 haploinsufficiency and increase cancer risk in BRCA2 mutation carriers. In support of this hypothesis, our team recently reported the breast cancer risk modifying effect of an ALDH2 common polymorphism, rs10744777, among Polish carriers of the BRCA2 p.K3326* mutation. In the current case-control study, we aimed to investigate the ESCC risk modifying effect of this ALDH2 polymorphism among BRCA2 p.K3326* mutation carriers. We assessed the interaction between the ALDH2 rs10744777 polymorphism and BRCA2 p.K3326* mutation in ESCC risk by genotyping this ALDH2 variant in the germline DNA of 746 ESCC cases and 1,373 controls from northern Iran who were previously genotyped for the BRCA2 p.K3326* mutation. Among a total of 464 individuals with TT genotype of the ALDH2 rs10744777 polymorphism, which is associated with lower ALDH2 expression, we found 9 of 164 cases versus 3 of 300 controls who carried the BRCA2 p.K3326* variant (OR = 5.66, 95% CI = 1.22-26.2, P = 0.018). This finding supports our hypothesis that the ALDH2-rs10744777 TT genotype may be a significant risk modifier of ESCC in individuals with a BRCA2 p.K3326* mutation.

PURPOSE: Esophageal cancer (EC) is the second most common cancer in Malawi, with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) representing >90% of all ECs. Despite significant morbidity and mortality, little is known about disease outcomes. In this study, we assess survival after ESCC diagnosis in Malawi. METHODS: We report on ESCC cases enrolled in a case-control study at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe from August 2017 to April 2020. Suspected cases completed a questionnaire interview; provided blood, urine, and saliva specimens; and underwent a tumor biopsy for histologic confirmation. Cases were followed up by phone biweekly from enrollment to the study end date (December 31, 2020), date of death, or loss to follow-up. Survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis with the log-rank test. We also examined associations between treatment and ESCC mortality using Cox regression models. RESULTS: There were 300 patients with ESCC enrolled in this study, of whom 290 (97%) had known vital status at the end of follow-up and 10 (3%) were lost to follow-up. Among the 290 patients, 282 (97%) died during follow-up. The median age at enrollment was 55 years (IQR, 48-66), and the median time to death was 106 days (95% CI, 92 to 127). The 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year survival rates were 11% (95% CI, 8 to 15), 3% (95% CI, 1 to 6), and 0.9% (95% CI, 0.8 to 4), respectively. Palliative chemotherapy significantly improved the overall survival of patients with ESCC (Plog-rank = .038) and was significantly associated with reduced mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.51 to 0.99]). No significant association was observed between tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or HIV status and mortality. CONCLUSION: Survival after diagnosis of ESCC was poor in Malawi. Although palliative chemotherapy was associated with improved survival, prevention and earlier detection remain key priorities to improve ESCC mortality at a population level.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is a group of rare but serious autoimmune blistering disorders, affecting skin and mucus membrane. Different reports have been published in respect to the coexistence of pemphigus with neoplasms, especially lympho-proliferative ones. CASE: Here, we have reported a patient previously diagnosed with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) who developed esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). CONCLUSION: Dyspepsia and dysphagia in patients with PV might not be merely due to pemphigus erosions or simply an adverse effect of systemic corticosteroid such as irritant or candidal esophagitis and should raise the suspicion of more serious conditions in case of resistant symptoms without appropriate response to treatment.

To investigate the association between radiotherapy (RT) and thoracic vertebral fractures in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and explore the risk factors of thoracic vertebral fracture in ESCC who underwent RT. This retrospective cohort study including 602 consecutive ESCC patients examined the association between RT and thoracic vertebral fractures using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models and relevant risk factors of thoracic vertebral fractures based on clinical and RT parameters in patients with ESCC. Followed for a median follow-up of 24 months, 54 patients had thoracic vertebral fractures. The multivariable analysis revealed RT as an independent risk factor after adjusting for clinical risk factors. Univariable analyses associated a 5-Gy increase in vertebral dose to single vertebrae and a 1-time increase in RT fraction with higher risk of vertebral fracture. Adding RT factors (vertebral dose and fraction) and mean vertebral hounsfield unit to the Cox models containing conventional clinical risk factors significantly improved the χ2 value for predicting vertebral fractures (all P < .001). This study revealed RT, as well as increased vertebral dose and RT fractions, as a significant, consistent, and strong vertebral fracture predictor in ESCC. Combined vertebral dose, RT fractions, and vertebral hounsfield unit provided optimal risk stratification for ESCC patients.

BACKGROUND: The rate of metachronous recurrence after endoscopic submucosal dissection for early-stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma is as high (10-15%). The acetaldehyde breath test may detect acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 gene polymorphisms. Therefore, we evaluated its usefulness in assessing metachronous recurrence in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: A total of 76 patients underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma and were followed up for at least 3 years (non-recurrence group: 52 patients; recurrence group: 24 patients). The risk factors for carcinogenesis were compared between the recurrence and non-recurrence groups, and the acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio was assessed. The cutoff acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio that correlated with recurrence was established, and the cumulative recurrence rate was evaluated. RESULTS: The recurrence group had a higher acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio, daily alcohol consumption, and Lugol-voiding lesion grade than the non-recurrence group in the univariate analysis. The cutoff acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio for recurrence was 28.1 based on the receiver operating characteristic curve. The multivariate analysis revealed an acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio of > 28.1 and a Lugol-voiding lesion grade associated with carcinogenesis. Patients with an acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio of ≥ 28.1 had a significantly high recurrence rate using the Kaplan-Meier method. CONCLUSIONS: The acetaldehyde-to-ethanol ratio detected using the acetaldehyde breath test could be a novel biomarker of metachronous recurrence after endoscopic submucosal dissection in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma. BACKGROUND: Multiple development of esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma is explained by field cancerization and is associated with alcohol consumption and smoking. We investigated the association between the development of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma after endoscopic resection for esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma and genetic polymorphisms related to alcohol and nicotine metabolism. METHODS: The study group comprised 56 patients with esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma after endoscopic resection. The main variables were the following: (i) cumulative incidence and total number of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma according to genetic polymorphisms in alcohol dehydrogenase 1B, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 and cytochrome P450 2A6; and (ii) risk factors of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma identified using a multivariate Cox proportional-hazards model. The frequencies of alcohol dehydrogenase 1B, aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 and cytochrome P450 2A6 genetic polymorphisms in the buccal mucosa were analyzed. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 92.8 months (range: 2.7-134.2). Slow-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B was associated with a higher 7-year cumulative incidence of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (fast-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B vs slow-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B: 20.5% vs 71.4%, P = 0.006). Slow-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B (relative risk [95% confidence interval]: 3.17 [1.49-6.73]), inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (2.17 [1.01-4.63]) and poorly-metabolizing cytochrome P450 2A6 (4.63 [1.74-12.33]) had a significantly higher total number of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma per 100 person-years. In the multivariate Cox proportional-hazards model, slow-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B was a significant risk factor of the development of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (hazard ratio 9.92, 95% confidence interval: 2.35-41.98, P = 0.0018). CONCLUSIONS: Slow-metabolizing alcohol dehydrogenase 1B may be a significant risk factor for the development of second primary esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma. In addition, inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 and poorly-metabolizing cytochrome P450 2A6 may be important factors.

Gut inflammation has been correlated with cancerogenesis by disrupting gastrointestinal homeostasis. Numerous chronic inflammatory disorders of the tubular gastrointestinal tract (e.g., gastroesophageal reflux disease, Helicobacter pylori-induced and autoimmune chronic gastritis, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases) have been variably associated with an increased neoplastic risk. Gastrointestinal inflammation-induced neoplasms include epithelial tumors (esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, gastric adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors, small bowel adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors, and colorectal cancer) and lymphomas (such as gastric marginal zone lymphomas and enteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma). In the last decades, numerous studies have investigated the pathogenetic mechanisms and the microenvironmental/microbiome changes that trigger genetic and/or epigenetic alterations eventually leading to tumorigenesis, often through a histologically recognizable inflammation-dysplasia-carcinoma cancerogenic sequence. In the present review, an overview of the current knowledge on the links between inflammatory diseases and neoplasms of the tubular GI tract, applying a site-by-site approach, is provided.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This prospective study aimed to compare the changes in nutritional status and adverse events among patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who received enteral nutrition through oral intake, PEG, and an enteral nasogastric tube (NGT) during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS: Of 141 included patients, 38, 74, and 29 patients were fed through oral intake, PEG, and NGTs, respectively. The clinical characteristics and baseline nutritional status of the 3 groups were recorded and analyzed. The Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment score, skeletal muscle index, and quality of life were evaluated before and after CCRT; the incidence of adverse events during feeding using PEG and NGTs was also recorded. The correlations among the different nutritional pathways and the CCRT-related adverse events (eg, radiation esophagitis and myelosuppression) were assessed. RESULTS: At baseline, the oral intake group had a significantly better nutritional status and lower disease stage than those in the PEG and NGT groups. However, during CCRT, the oral intake group exhibited the most significant decreases in weight and skeletal muscle index. The synchronous chemotherapy completion rate was the highest in the PEG group. Multivariate analysis showed that the planning tumor volume and oral intake and NGT feeding pathways were associated with radiation esophagitis of at least grade 2. CONCLUSIONS: We found that PEG effectively maintained the body weight and skeletal muscle index of patients with esophageal cancer during CCRT. PEG also improved the synchronous chemotherapy completion rate and reduced the occurrence of at least grade 2 radiation esophagitis. (Clinical trial registration number: NCT04199832.).

Oesophageal cancer is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy in China and one of the major causes of death due to cancer worldwide. The occurrence of oesophageal cancer is a multifactor, multistage, and multistep process influenced by heredity, the environment, and microorganisms. Specifically, bacterial infection may be involved in the process of tissue carcinogenesis by directly or indirectly influencing tumour occurrence and development. Porphyromonas gingivalis is an important pathogen causing periodontitis, and periodontitis can promote the occurrence of various tumours. An increasing number of studies to date have shown that P. gingivalis plays an important role in the occurrence and development of oesophageal cancer. Overall, exploring how P. gingivalis promotes oesophageal cancer occurrence and development and how it affects the prognosis of these patients is of great importance for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of this type of cancer. Herein, the latest progress is reviewed.

Plummer Vinson syndrome (PVS) is a rare entity and most publications are case or series of cases. Thus, we report a series from southern Tunisia. Our aim was to analyse the epidemiological and clinical characteristics, the therapeutic modalities as well as the evolution of this pathology. Thus we carried out a retrospective study from 2009 until 2019. For each patient with PVS, we collected the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical data and therapeutic modalities. A total of 23 patients were enrolled with a median age of 49.52 years [18-82 years] and a clear female predominance (M/F=2/21). The median duration of dysphagia was 42 months [4-92 months]. Moderate microcytic hypochromic anemia was noted in 16 patients. The anemia was without obvious cause in 60.8% (n=14) of cases. The main endoscopic finding was a diaphragm in the cervical area. Treatment was based on iron supplementation followed by endoscopic dilatation with Savary dilators in 90.9% (n=20) and balloons for 9.1% of patients (n=2). Dysphagia recurred in 5 patients after a median of 26.6 months [2-60 months]. Three cases of PVS were complicated by esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. In conclusion, our series confirms that PVS affects mostly women. Anemia is frequently noted in these patients. Treatment is based on endoscopic dilatation which is often an easy and risk-free procedure and iron supplementation.
