ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia of the fallopian tubes. Methods: Sixteen cases of pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia of the fallopian tubes diagnosed at Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University from January 2011 to January 2024 were collected.The pathological sections were reviewed, the clinical and pathological data were consulted, and immunohistochemical examination was conducted along with follow-up. Results: The patients were aged from 19 to 57 years, with an average age of 41 and a median age of 38. Among the 16 cases, 4 were located in the right fallopian tubes, 6 in the left fallopian tubes, while the remaining cases presented bilaterally. The general manifestations were tubal edema, crispness and purulent secretion in the lumen. Morphologically, the fallopian tube mucosa exhibited a significant infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells. The epithelial cells of the fallopian tube displayed evident proliferation, stratification and disorganized arrangement leading to formation of small glandular cavity with back-to-back, fissure-like and sieve-like structures. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for CK7 and WT1, along with wild-type p53 expression, Ki-67 index ranged from 5% to 20%. During the follow-up period ranging from 1 to 156 months, all the patients remained free of disease. Conclusions: Pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia of the fallopian tube is a rare non-neoplastic lesion, which can lead to epithelial hyperplasia and atypical hyperplasia. The most important significance of recognizing this lesion lies in avoiding misdiagnosis of fallopian tube cancer during intraoperative and postoperative pathological examination. This ensures that clinicians can administer correct clinical interventions.

ABSTRACT

We describe a case of bowel perforation secondary to a recurrence of primary fallopian tube carcinoma treated more than a decade ago. A woman in her 70s presented to a rural centre with an acute abdomen. An abdominal CT showed a perforated ileum secondary to a pelvic mass. Emergency laparotomy identified the pelvic mass that was adherent to the side wall and invading the ileum at the site of perforation. Its adherence to the external iliac vessels posed a challenge to achieve en-bloc resection; therefore, a defunctioning loop ileostomy was created. Final histopathology and immunopathology were consistent with the recurrence of her primary fallopian tube carcinoma. The patient was further discussed in a multidisciplinary team meeting at a tertiary referral hospital. This case highlighted the importance of having a high index of suspicion for cancer recurrence, the utility of rapid source control laparotomy and multidisciplinary team patient management.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate if time to start chemotherapy (TTC) after primary debulking surgery (PDS) impacted relative survival (RS) in advanced epithelial ovarian/fallopian tube/primary peritoneal cancer (EOC). METHODS: Nationwide population-based study of women with EOC FIGO stages IIIC-IV, registered 2008-2018 in the Swedish Quality Register for Gynecologic Cancer, treated with PDS and chemotherapy. TTC was categorized into; ≤21 days, 22-28 days, 29-35 days, 36-42 days and > 42 days. Relative survival (RS) was estimated using the Pohar-Perme estimate of net survival. Multivariable analyses of excess mortality rate ratios (EMRRs) were estimated by Poisson regression models. RESULTS: In total, 1694 women were included. The median age was 65.0 years. Older age and no residual disease were more common in TTC >42 days than 0-21 days. The RS at 5-years was 37.9% and did not differ between TTC groups. In the R0 (no residual disease) cohort (n = 806), 2-year RS was higher in TTC ≤21 days (91.6%) and 22-28 days (91.4%) than TTC >42 days (79.1%). TTC >42 days (EMRR 2.33, p = 0.026), FIGO stage IV (EMRR 1.83, p = 0.007) and non-serous histology (EMRR 4.20, p < 0.001) were associated with 2-year worse excess mortality compared to TTC 0-21 days, in the R0 cohort. TTC was associated with 2-year survival in the R0 cohort in FIGO stage IV but not in stage IIIC. TTC was not associated with RS in patients with residual disease. CONCLUSIONS: For the entire cohort, stage IV, non-serous morphology and residual disease, but not TTC, influenced 5-year relative survival. However, longer TTC was associated with a poorer 2-year survival for those without residual disease after PDS.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Currently, a lively debate exists within the scientific community regarding the most suitable procedure for treating stages IIIB-IVB carcinoma of the ovary, fallopian tubes, and peritoneum. The options under most consideration are primary cytoreductive surgery or neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval cytoreductive surgery. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To compare overall survival at 5 years in patients who underwent primary cytoreductive surgery versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy and interval cytoreductive surgery for stage IIIB-IVB ovarian cancer STUDY HYPOTHESIS: The treatment with primary cytoreductive surgery results in superior patient survival compared with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval cytoreductive surgery. TRIAL DESIGN: This is a multicenter, retrospective cohort observational study. Data will be collected from patients undergoing surgery in hospitals worldwide. Two arms will be compared: primary cytoreductive surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval cytoreductive surgery. MAJOR INCLUSION/EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Patients must have suspected or histologically confirmed International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages IIIB-IVB ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancers. They must have undergone primary surgery or first course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019. Based on all available information before the surgery (primary or interval), the patient must have been considered completely resectable. PRIMARY ENDPOINT: Overall survival at 5 years from the first treatment (chemotherapy in the case of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and cytoreduction in the case of primary cytoreductive surgery). ABSTRACT

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the fallopian tube (PLFT) is an extremely rare gynecological malignancy that has only been described in case reports. Fertility-sparing treatment for PLFT has not been reported previously. A 24-year-old nulligravida woman was diagnosed with stage IC1 PLFT in the right fallopian tube after experiencing right lower quadrant pain for 2 weeks. She underwent laparoscopic right salpingectomy to preserve fertility followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine/docetaxel. She subsequently became pregnant spontaneously, delivering a term baby 27 months after treatment. This appears to be the only report of the use of fertility-preserving treatment for PLFT. The success of the treatment provides valuable information on the preservation of fertility in young women with PLFT.

ABSTRACT

Epithelial ovarian and fallopian cancers are aggressive lesions that rarely metastasize to the central nervous system. Brain metastases usually occur in the setting of known primary disease or widespread metastatic disease. However, in extremely rare cases, an isolated intracranial neoplasm may be the first presentation of fallopian cancer. To the best of our knowledge, only one such case has been reported previously. We present an illustrative case with multimodality imaging and histopathologic correlation of a fallopian tube carcinoma first presenting with altered mental status secondary to an isolated brain metastasis. A 64-year-old female with no pertinent medical history presented with altered mentation. Initial workup identified a 1.6 cm avidly enhancing, solitary brain lesion at the gray-white junction with associated vasogenic edema concerning for either central nervous system lymphoma or metastatic disease. Additional imaging identified a 7.5 × 3 cm left adnexal lesion, initially thought to be a hydrosalpinx with hemorrhage, but magnetic resonance imaging suggested gynecologic malignancy. No lesions elsewhere in the body were identified. Given the lack of locoregional or systemic disease, the intracranial and pelvic lesions were assumed to represent synchronous but distinct processes. The intracranial lesion was biopsied. Preliminary results were suggestive of lymphoma, but further analysis was consistent with high-grade serous carcinoma of müllerian origin. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography was performed to evaluate for other neoplastic lesions, only highlighting the intracranial and pelvic lesions. At this point, a diagnosis of metastatic fallopian cancer was made. The patient was taken for robot-assisted laparoscopy with surgical debulking of the pelvic neoplasm, pathology demonstrating high-grade serous carcinoma of the fallopian tube, matching that of the intracranial lesion. Even though rare, metastatic fallopian cancer should be considered in patients with isolated brain lesions and adnexal lesions, even in the absence of locoregional or systemic disease.

BACKGROUNDS: There is still no consensus on the significance of Lymphadenectomy (LD) and the number of lymph nodes that need to be excised (ELNs) for adequate LD in patients with early-stage primary fallopian tube cancer (PFTC). Our endeavor is geared towards deepening comprehension of LD in early-stage PFTC and identify the optimal cut-off of ELNs. METHODS: This SEER-based study analyzed the clinical data of patients with early-stage PFTC between 2000 and 2018. X-tile was employed to confirm the optimal cut-off of ELNs. The survival data between groups were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier estimates, Log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: There was significant improvement in both mean cancer-specific survival (CSS, p < 0.001) and overall survival (OS, p < 0.001) in LD group. Regardless of matched or not, LD was identified as an independent protective factor of CSS and OS. The optimal 3-year CSS-based cutoff of ELNs was 11 (p = 0.026) as determined by X-tile. Both the mean CSS (p = 0.001) and mean OS (p = 0.002) in adequate LD group (ELNs > 11, n = 574) were significantly longer than these in inadequate LD group (ELNs ≤ 11, n = 738). Adequate LD, FIGO stage, tumor grade and histology were significant prognostic factors for CSS and OS. CONCLUSION: LD is an independent protective prognostic factor of patients with early-stage PFTC. The association between ELNs > 11 and an improved prognosis is evident. Future studies are needed to further clarify the results above.

ABSTRACT

Primary fallopian tube carcinoma (PFTC) is a rare disease. Its location, close association with epithelial ovarian carcinoma, and lack of specific signs and symptoms make diagnosis challenging especially in its early stages. We report a postmenopausal patient who presented with a 2-month history of abdominopelvic pain with watery vaginal discharge. Imaging findings showed a 7 cm complex left adnexal mass. The patient underwent a robotic-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and surgical staging. Findings were significant for stage IA serous fallopian tube carcinoma. PFTC is sometimes missed preoperatively and intraoperatively. Available literature review has focused on the clinical and imaging characteristics of PFTC to aid in timely disease diagnosis. Minimally invasive surgery is a viable option in the diagnosis and management of early-stage ovarian cancer due to improved visualisation of pelvic structures, decreased length of hospital stay, decreased estimated blood loss and lower postoperative complication rates compared with laparotomy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) is a precursor lesion which is located in the distal fallopian tube and causes high grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). The incidence of STIC for women underwent risk reducing salpingo-oophorectomy for BRCA mutation varies from 0.6 to 7% and its clinical outcomes are still unclear. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the incidence of STIC and HGSOC in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers after risk reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) and the clinical outcomes of these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 48 BRCA1 and/or 2 mutation carriers who underwent prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy with or without hysterectomy at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bursa Uludag University between January 2000 and January 2022. INCLUSION CRITERIA: BRCA 1 and/or 2 mutation carriers diagnosed by genetic testing, asymptomatic patients with no abnormal findings on pelvic examination. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: patients with no abnormal findings on pelvic examination and a presence of a personal history of ovarian, fallopian tube or peritoneal cancer. RESULTS: A total of 48 BRCA 1 and/or 2 mutation carriers underwent RRSO. STIC was diagnosed in 1 (2,0%) patient and restaging surgery was not performed. Primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC) did not develop during the 20 months follow-up period. One (2.0%) patient was diagnosed with occult ovarian cancer. Restaging surgery was performed and chemotherapy treatments were given after surgery. A pelvic recurrence developed 25 months after the occult cancer diagnosis in the follow up period. One (2.0%) patient with normal histopathological findings after RRSO was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer 57 months after the operation. CONCLUSION: The risk of PPC continues after RRSO. Therefore, close follow-up procedure is very important for early diagnosis and effective treatment of patients with PPC after RRSO.

BACKGROUND: At the time of benign gynecological surgery, a prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy or salpingectomy is increasingly being performed concurrently to reduce the risk of future ovarian and fallopian tube cancer. We herein describe a case of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome in which a hysterectomy and bilateral adnexectomy were performed with a preoperative diagnosis of benign tumor. A detailed pathological examination revealed occult fallopian tube cancer, and additional staging surgery provided an accurate pathology diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Japanese woman with a past history of breast cancer underwent a hysterectomy and bilateral oophoro-salpingectomy for the preoperative diagnosis of uterine myoma and a right para-ovarian cyst. In the detailed pathological examination, high-grade serous carcinoma of the right fallopian tube was detected incidentally, and a subsequent staging laparotomy confirmed single para-aortic lymph node metastasis. Furthermore, a mutation in germline BRCA2 was detected postoperatively, and the patient was finally diagnosed with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. She was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Stage IIIA1(i) and started on adjuvant therapy (six courses of paclitaxel and carboplatin followed by maintenance therapy with olaparib), and 18 months after surgery, she was free of disease. CONCLUSION: This is a case of fallopian tube cancer that was diagnosed incidentally and then accurately staged with additional advanced staging surgery. Even in the absence of grossly malignant findings, a detailed pathological search of the fallopian tubes and accurate staging surgery are important to make the necessary treatment decisions for the patient.

ABSTRACT

Benign tumors of the fallopian tube are uncommon. Teratomas are most frequently found in the ovary and fallopian tube teratoma is extremely rare. To date, around 70 cases have been described, and most of them were discovered by chance. Here we present two cases of fallopian tube dermoid cyst. The first case is of a woman who was unable to conceive for 4 years with a right ovarian dermoid. She was managed with laparoscopic cystectomy when she was found to have a small teratoma-like lesion at the fimbrial end of the left fallopian tube. The second case is of a female who underwent elective caesarian section and was found to have a teratoma-like lesion at the right fallopian tube. Histopathology of both cases were reported as mature cystic teratoma. These cases suggest the need for careful examination of the pelvic organs for other pathology apart from the primary surgical sites. ABSTRACT

Fallopian tube cancer (FTC) is an extremely rare case in oncogynecological practice with an incidence of 0,14-1,8 % among all malignant diseases of the female genital organs. The lack of specific symptoms, imitation of other malignant gynecological diseases, significant similarity with endometrial and ovarian cancer make FTC a disease that is difficult to diagnose. At the preoperative stage, FTC can be detected in 0 to 21% of cases. We present a clinical case of FTC at an early stage in a 64-year-old woman. The patient was referred to the gynecological department of the hospital because of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and pain in the lower abdomen, which had been bothering her for the last 2 months. During the gynecological examination, a tumor-like mass up to 5 cm in diameter was palpated on the left side, with a dense consistency, sensitive to palpation, and limited mobility. Transvaginal ultrasound, CT, oncological markers were made. 7 days later, after performing hysteroresectoscopy with polypectomy, the patient underwent Pfannenstil laparotomy, total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and omentectomy, drainage of the abdominal cavity. Morphological result: in the wall of the left fallopian tube, the growth of adenocarcinoma, pT1a, G2 with foci of necrosis and invasion into the muscular layer of the wall of the fallopian tube is determined. Perineural and lymphovascular invasion in the studied material is not determined. This case of FTC in a postmenopausal woman confirms that it is difficult to detect malignant tumors of tubal localization at the preoperative stage.

ABSTRACT

Neuroendocrine neoplasms commonly arise from the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. Less commonly, they may occur in the gynecologic tract, typically within the ovary of a mature cystic teratoma. Primary neuroendocrine neoplasms of the fallopian tube are exceptionally rare and only a total of 11 cases have been reported in the literature. We describe the first case to our knowledge of a primary grade 2 neuroendocrine tumor of the fallopian tube in a 47-yr-old female. In this report, we describe the case's unique presentation, review the published literature on primary neuroendocrine neoplasms of the fallopian tube, discuss the treatment options, and speculate on their origin and histogenesis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) is a known precursor of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). This study aimed to evaluate the proportion of STIC in patients with HGSOC and analyze the STIC-related prognosis in patients with HGSOC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All pathology reports at our institution that included bilateral salpingectomies of patients with HGSOC from January 2013 to December 2018 were reviewed by two experienced pathologists. The specimens from the ovaries and the salpinx including fimbria were examined. We analyzed the correlation between STIC and HGSOC and compared the clinical characteristics and STIC-related prognostic outcomes in patients with HGSOC. RESULTS: Eleven of the 76 cases were STIC. BRCA mutations were found in 16.9% of patients with HGSOC. STIC was observed in 30.0% of patients with BRCA mutations and in 14.3% of patients without BRCA mutations. The incidence of STIC in patients with BRCA mutations was approximately twice that in patients without BRCA mutations; however, the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.231). Further, the 5-year survival rate of patients without STIC appeared to be high; nevertheless, the difference was not statistically significant (59.7% vs. 47.4%, P = 0.633). Moreover, there was no significant difference in disease-free survival rate according to STIC (36.4% vs. 33.1%, P = 0.956). CONCLUSION: STIC was identified in patients with HGSOC, and STIC incidence was prominent in HGSOC related to BRCA mutation. Although low frequency, STIC was detected in patients without BRCA mutation. Therefore, prophylactic salpingectomy may be useful for prevention of HGSOC.

ABSTRACT

The RAD51D gene codes a protein-paralog of the RAD51 DNA recombinase, which catalyzes DNA strand exchange during homologous recombination. Similar to BRCA1 / BRCA2 , mutations in RAD51D both predispose to ovarian carcinoma and impart sensitivity to poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors in preclinical studies. Based on cancer risk prediction models, RAD51D mutations pose a moderate-to-high risk for ovarian cancer warranting consideration for risk-reducing surgery. We report a case of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma in a patient undergoing risk-reducing total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for a RAD51D pathogenic variant. The histopathologic and p53-immunophenotypic features of this lesion are similar to those reported previously in BRCA1 / BRCA2 mutation carriers and those of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma associated with sporadic high-grade serous carcinomas. These features include marked increase in nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, loss of cell polarity, absence of ciliation, prominent nucleoli, mitotic activity, epithelial stratification, surface exfoliative changes, and complete loss of p53 staining. Although familial ovarian cancers with mutations in RAD51D -or other genes in the Fanconi anemia pathway-are much less common those with BRCA1 / BRCA2 mutations, our findings support a common phenotype for early serous cancers in this pathway.

ABSTRACT

A 59-year-old woman underwent simple abdominal total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, partial omentectomy, and extirpation of intrapelvic disseminated nodules for right fallopian tube cancer with rectal metastasis and peritoneal dissemination as primary debulking surgery(PDS). The histopathological diagnosis was high grade serous carcinoma( HGSC)of the right fallopian tube. After adjuvant chemotherapy with 4 courses of paclitaxel-carboplatin(TC), low anterior resection of the rectum for rectal metastasis and pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection were performed as interval debulking surgery(IDS). Histopathologically, lymph node metastasis was detected only in the right obturator lymph node. After adjuvant chemotherapy with 4 courses of TC, bevacizumab maintenance monotherapy was administered. Three years after PDS, laparoscopic splenectomy for splenic metastasis and extirpation of the solitary peritoneal metastases were performed as secondary debulking surgery(SDS). After adjuvant chemotherapy with 4 courses of TC, olaparib maintenance monotherapy was administered. The patient has remained alive without recurrence for 4 years after SDS and for 7 years after PDS. No case of metachronous splenic metastasis from fallopian tube cancer with synchronous rectal metastasis has been reported; however, long-term prognosis may be expected with PDS, IDS and SDS for platinum-sensitive HGSC.

BACKGROUND: Discontinuing chemotherapy worsens cancer prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nutritional status at the start of chemotherapy and chemotherapy discontinuation in patients with ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. One hundred and forty-six patients to whom weekly paclitaxel and carboplatin were administered as postoperative chemotherapy were included. Six courses in 21-day cycles were defined as complete treatment. As nutritional indicators, body mass index, weight change rate, serum albumin, total lymphocyte count, prognostic nutritional index, and C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) were compared between complete and incomplete treatment groups. Patients were divided into two groups according to CAR. The number of chemotherapy cycles was compared between these two groups. A Cox proportional hazard model was used for covariate adjustment. RESULTS: Several indicators differed between complete and incomplete treatment groups, and among the indicators, CAR had the highest discriminatory ability. The number of chemotherapy cycles was shorter in the high CAR group than in the low CAR group. A high CAR was associated with chemotherapy interruption even after adjusting for covariates. CONCLUSION: Based on CAR, nutritional status before chemotherapy is suggested to be associated with the risk of chemotherapy discontinuation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Serous ovarian cancer is the most common subtype of epithelial ovarian carcinoma-the most prevalent type of ovarian cancer. High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is thought to arise from the distal fallopian tube, with a precursor lesion known as serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC). STICs are found in the final pathology of a salpingectomy specimen in 10%-20% of women with a BRCA gene mutation and 1%-7% of women without a mutation. However, there is currently no official guideline and a paucity of data on the management of STICs. DATA SOURCES: We performed a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Five databases were searched for relevant studies on STICs. STUDY SELECTION: Two independent reviewers performed the abstract and full-text screening and data extraction, with conflicts resolved through discussion with the third reviewer. The risk of bias of each study was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Fourteen articles were included. Ninety-nine patients who were diagnosed with STIC and subsequently followed for a mean period of 55.5 months were included in this analysis. Eighty-three patients (83.9%) were BRCA mutation carriers. After the diagnosis of isolated STIC, 7 patients (7.3%) received chemotherapy and 25 (26%) underwent surgical staging. Three of the 25 patients were diagnosed with HGSOC based on the staging surgery. Nine patients were later diagnosed with HGSOC during follow-up, with an average duration of follow-up of 58.5 months between the diagnosis of STIC and the diagnosis of HGSOC. CONCLUSION: Based on our review of the literature, there is a 10.7% risk of having concurrent HGSOC at the time of STIC diagnosis, and the risk of developing a subsequent HGSOC is 14.5%. BRCA mutation status should be determined in cases of isolated STIC, as 83.9% of patients included in this study were found to carry BRCA mutations. We believe it is necessary to further investigate the role of surgical staging following the diagnosis of STIC.

INTRODUCTION: International guidelines recommend risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) in BRCA1-2 mutations carriers to decrease ovarian cancer occurrence. In this prospective study, we describe the incidence of occult malignancies and the surgical outcomes in asymptomatic BRCA mutation carriers submitted to RRSO. METHODS: Data on BRCA1-2 carriers undergoing RRSO with peritoneal washing and peritoneal/omental biopsies (PeS), between January 2019 until March 2021, were prospectively collected. RESULTS: A total of 132 patients were enrolled: 74 BRCA1 and 58 BRCA2 mutation carriers. 31.1% women underwent RRSO and PeS (16.2% of BRCA1 and 50% of BRCA2 carriers), while 68.9% patients were submitted also to concomitant hysterectomy. Almost all the procedures (99.2%) were performed by minimally invasive surgery. Postoperative complications occurred in twelve patients (9.1%): 10 in the concomitant hysterectomy group and two complications in the RRSO group. At the final pathological examination, 6 (4.5%) occult carcinomas were diagnosed: 3 fallopian tube carcinomas, one ovarian carcinoma and two serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas (STICs), with negative PeS. Median age of occult carcinomas patients at RRSO was 54 (range: 48-79) years. The mean follow up was 20 (range: 7-34) months. During the follow up, no primary peritoneal cancer has been diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS: Occult pathologic findings in RRSO occurred in 4.5% (3% invasive carcinomas, STIC 1.5%) among our patients. The routine use of peritoneal biopsies does not improve the detection of occult malignancies. Our data confirm the importance of timely performing RRSO in BRCA1-2 carriers.
