ABSTRACT

Medical librarians work collaboratively across all units and missions of academic medical centers. One area where librarians can provide key expertise is in the building and maintenance of Research Information Management Systems (RIMS). At Penn State, the RIMS implementation team has included a medical librarian, research administrators and marketing staff from the College of Medicine (CoM) since its inception in 2016. As our peer institutions implemented or expanded their own RIMS systems, the CoM team has responded to their questions regarding details about the Penn State RIMS instance. The goal of this commentary is to describe how the CoM team has worked collaboratively within Penn State to address questions related to research output, with special emphasis on details pertaining to questions from other institutions.

ABSTRACT

Databases have derived from the need for available synthesized information, thus minimizing the time spent accessing theme data of interest. In the framework of medicine, the search and retrieval of document material from medical information databases is both complex and time-consuming, due to the saturation in the dissemination of scientific production. Few initiatives have been put forth in Cuba concerning resource types enabling health professionals to obtain information about intellectually outstanding historical figures who have stated criteria and reflections about medicine and health, as is the case with José Martí Pérez and Fidel Castro Ruz. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the stages in the development of the MaFiMed database at the National Medical Library. This database is a collection of thoughts by Martí and Fidel about medical and health topics(AU)

ABSTRACT

The performance of librarians in the medical sciences is enhanced by identifying their training needs through the use of an information literacy tool. We performed this study between 2016 and 2017 with the staff of the medical libraries network at Artemisa province in Cuba. In the first stage of the study we assessed the initial state of the staff's information literacy, and in a second stage, we used empiri-cal and theoretical methods to propose an information literacy tool in digital format. The methodology used was based on educational software. The tool will contribute to enhancing the performance of librarians working in the network of medical libraries in the prov-ince of Artemisa, Cuba.

ABSTRACT

The discourse about health in Puerto Rico has been constructed using the physician and hospital's perspective or a particular disease or epidemic. Thus far, this approach has not addressed the health library as an object of study. The origins and development of the Conrado F. Asenjo Library (CFAL) will be discussed. Before 1912, there were no medical libraries in Puerto Rico, only private collections. In 1914, the act that created the Institute of Tropical Medicine was amended to allocate funds for the purchase of books to support research in tropical diseases in Puerto Rico. The history of the CFA Library reflects its contribution to issues, concerns, development of research, and to the evolving paradigms in the health field in the Island. Historical documents, such as Bailey K. Ashford's personal papers located at the CFAL and Georgetown University Archives (GU) were evaluated. Institutional reports from the School of Tropical Medicine (STM) and articles published by Puerto Rican physicians such as Dr. Pedro Gutiérrez Igaravídez and Dr. Isaac González Martínez, affiliated to the Institute of Tropical Medicine, were also studied. Finally, references and bibliographies in articles published between 1912 and 1924 were evaluated and consulted to find additional sources.

ABSTRACT

This article examines the creation and the first years of functioning of the Regional Library of Medicine (Biblioteca Regional de Medicina--Bireme--PAHO), today Latin-American Center for Information in Health Sciences, during 1963-1982. In the course of this analysis, Bireme is being characterized as both an apparatus and an arena for negotiation present in the most general processes of development expressed in international cooperation, information in science and technology, health policies and in the movement for expansion and reform of medical teaching. The narrative has as initial landmark the conception of a regional library of medicine for Latin America according to a model proposed by the National Library of Medicine. The article qualifies the first years of Bireme's existence as the history of the reception of this model, a trajectory that reflected the criticism of that time against the way the health care services were organized and their human resources were educated. Finally, beginning in 1976, a new model resulted in a real modification of Bireme's programmatic agenda, implying in very distinct contributions for the functioning of the regime of information in health sciences in force in Brazil and Latin America.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Approaching from the framework of social, political, and economic contexts, the article analyzes the process involved in creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (Bireme). The period in question coincides with the consolidation of US influence in the West, between the 1950s and 1970s. A recovery and examination of reference documents and testimonies permits a discussion of the issues involved in setting up what was first known as the Regional Library of Medicine, an initiative in cultural and scientific integration that was highly influential in Latin American health sciences. The article offers reflections on the historical development of the institution as an initiative of the Pan American Health Organization and its subsequent role.
