ABSTRACT

Precipitation partitioning in arid and semiarid environments is not well understood due to scanty precipitation, its temporal distribution, and the lack/absence of adequate measurements of the hydrometeorological components. Simulation methods have the potential to bridge the data gap, thereby providing a window to estimate the water balance components. The present investigation evaluates the water balance components of a typical watershed situated in the southeastern Mediterranean for the period 1979 through 2019 using daily meteorological data and a grid spacing of 250 m. Generated runoff results were commensurate with corresponding values obtained using the SWAT model. Computed groundwater recharge is also compatible with recharge values calculated using the chloride mass balance method. Results show that average runoff and groundwater recharge for the entire period was ⁓24 mm a-1 and 19 mm a-1, giving a precipitation ratio of 9.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Substantial interannual variability in the water balance components was observed during the study period which reflected the significant precipitation fluctuations typifying the Eastern Mediterranean. Results show that the period extending from 1998/1999 through 2018/2019 witnessed an 18% drop in annual precipitation, while surface runoff and groundwater recharge experienced a reduction of ⁓34% and ⁓67%, respectively. Although groundwater recharge is a complex function of numerous meteorological and geological factors, the NDVI can provide an excellent indicator of groundwater recharge in marginal Mediterranean environments. This is highly beneficial in areas where climate records are scanty or absent. The presented results emphasize the significant impacts of global warming and aridification on the future availability of water resources in the semiarid marginal climates in the Eastern Mediterranean and point out clearly that water resources in this area will become scarcer, leading to multiple security threats at national and regional levels.

ABSTRACT

Background: The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) faces numerous public health risks caused by biological, chemical, man-made, and natural hazards. This manuscript aimed to assess the multifaceted interventions and strategies used to strengthen the EMR's preparedness capacities to respond properly to current and upcoming health emergencies. Objective: To address these challenges, it is crucial to implement comprehensive and robust strategic risk assessments and health emergency preparedness frameworks. The World Health Organization (WHO) takes a risk-based approach, emphasizing the significance of all-hazards emergency management and the creation of national health risk profiles using the Strategic Toolkit for Assessing Risk (STAR). Furthermore, the International Health Regulations (IHR) Monitoring and Evaluation Framework (MEF) ensures continuous learning and capacity building among Member States, enhancing their ability to manage health emergencies effectively. Key components include State Party Annual Reporting (SPAR), Joint External Evaluation (JEE), After Action Review (AAR), Intra Action Review (IAR), and Simulation Exercises (SimEx). Moreover, initiatives like One Health, Emergency Care Systems, Safe Hospitals, and Public Health Emergency Operations Centers (PHEOCs) reinforce preparedness and response capacities. Risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) strategies play a pivotal role in disseminating timely information and fostering community resilience. Furthermore, the management of Chemical, Biological, and Radiological (CBRN) incidents remains a priority, necessitating collaboration between the public health and security sectors. This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen health systems, reduce risks, and improve emergency response capabilities throughout the EMR, thereby promoting global health security and resilience. Conclusion: The EMR is addressing public health challenges through frameworks like IHR-MEF, and RCCE. It is strengthening emergency care systems, ensuring safe hospitals, and establishing PHEOCs. Proactive measures to address CBRN events and collaboration are enhancing resilience. The inclusion of the One Health approach underscores the EMR's holistic strategy to address the health threats at the human-animal-environment interface. This demonstrates the EMR's commitment to global health security.

ABSTRACT

This article details how the French army employed medical topography as a tool of military occupation throughout the Mediterranean world from the mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century. It departs from other works by focusing exclusively on medical topography's military applications. Medical topographies charted the connections between health and the environment by observing a location's features, such as soil, air, and water quality, as well as elevation, prevailing winds, common local diseases, sources of potential contagion, and the cleanliness of urban environments. Because a medical-topographic study took time to write and implement, its findings provided little utility during active conflict. Only after the fighting ceased during a campaign could the army make use of a medical topography's findings by taking measures such as draining swamps, relocating hospitals in unhealthy environments, and issuing climate-appropriate gear.


Cet article examine la façon dont l'armée française utilisait la topographie médicale en tant qu'outil d'occupation militaire pendant les dix-huitième et dix-neuvième siècles dans le monde Méditerranéen. Il se détache des autres travaux en se concentrant exclusivement sur les applications militaires de l'étude. Les études topographiques-médicales analysaient des liens entre l'environnement et la santé. Ces études permettaient l'observation minutieuse et l'enregistrement des caractéristiques d'un lieu, comme par exemple : son élévation, les vents dominants, la qualité de terre, d'eaux, et d'air, la propreté des centres urbaines, et des maladies locales ainsi que leurs origines. Parce que ces études exigeaient du temps d'écrire et d'implémenter, elles n'ont pas eu une grande utilité pratique pendant une campagne. Cependant, après la cessation des hostilités, l'armée a mis en pratique les résultats de ces études. Elle a vidé des marais, déménagé des hôpitaux malsains, et distribué du matériel adapté à l'environnement.

In Mediterranean countries, late-sown durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum) may face waterlogging (WL) at early stages. As mitigation of waterlogging by melatonin (MT) has been poorly explored, we analyzed the effects of exogenous MT foliar application to WL-stressed durum wheat on its ecophysiological performance, growth and biomass production. Late-sown plants of a relatively tolerant cultivar (i.e., Emilio-Lepido) were subjected to two WL durations (i.e., 14 and 35 days of WL; DOW) at tillering, with or without exogenous MT application (i.e., 0 and 100 µM). Prolonged WL reduced shoot biomass (-43%), but the application of MT mitigated this detrimental effect. Waterlogging impaired photosynthesis, reducing leaf CO2 assimilation and chlorophyll content (-61 and - 57%, at 14 and 35 DOW). In control, MT increased the photosynthetic pigments (+48%), whereas it exacerbated the decrease in photosynthesis under both WL conditions (-72%, on average). Conversely, MT reduced WL-induced oxidative damage in both shoots and roots (-25% hydrogen peroxide production), facilitating osmotic adjustments and mitigating oxidative stress. The accumulation of osmotic regulators in MT + WL plants (+140 and + 42%, in shoots and roots at 35 DOW; respectively) and mineral solutes (+140 and + 104%, on average, in shoots and roots at 14 DOW) likely mitigated WL stress, limiting the impact of oxidative stress and promoting biomass accumulation. Our results highlight the potential of MT as a bioactive compound in mitigating the adverse effects of WL on late-sown durum wheat and the importance of the complex interactions between physiological responses and environmental stressors.

ABSTRACT

Research studies on plant secondary metabolites have increased over the last decades as a consequence of the growing consumer demand for natural products in pharmaceutics and therapeutics, as well as in perfumery and cosmetics. In this perspective, many Mediterranean plant species could be an appreciated source of bioactive compounds with pharmacological and health-promoting properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor ones. Calendula officinalis and Foeniculum vulgare are commercially important plants of the Mediterranean flora, with great therapeutic use in the treatment of many disorders since ancient times, and are now listed in several world pharmacopoeias and drug agencies. The present review offers an overview of the main phytochemicals, phenols, terpenes, and alkaloids, biosynthesized in C. officinalis and F. vulgare, both species endemic to the Mediterranean region. Further, all current knowledge and scientific data on taxonomic classification, botanical description, traditional uses, pharmacological studies, and potential toxicity of both species were reported. The principal aim of this review is to point out the prospective use of C. officinalis and F. vulgare as valuable reservoirs of beneficial plant-derived products with interesting biological properties, also providing suggestions and future challenges for the full exploitation of these two Mediterranean species for human life improvement.

ABSTRACT

Global changes in climate are contributing to modified Phlebotomine sand fly presence and activity, and the distribution of the pathogens they transmit (e.g., Leishmania and Phlebovirus), and are leading to their possible extension toward northern France. To predict the evolution of these pathogens and control their spread, it is essential to identify and characterize the presence and abundance of potential vectors. However, there are no recent publications describing sand fly species distribution in France. Consequently, we carried out a systematic review to provide distribution and abundance maps over time, along with a simplified dichotomous key for species in France. The review adhered to PRISMA guidelines, resulting in 172 relevant capture reports from 168 studies out of the 2646 documents retrieved, of which 552 were read and 228 analyzed. Seven species were recorded and categorized into three groups based on their abundance: low abundance species, abundant but little-studied species, and abundant vector species. Sand flies are certainly present throughout France but there is a greater diversity of species in the Mediterranean region. Phlebotomus perniciosus and Ph. ariasi are the most abundant and widely distributed species, playing a role as vectors of Leishmania. Sergentomyia minuta, though very abundant, remains under-studied, highlighting the need for further research. Phlebotomus papatasi, Ph. perfiliewi, Ph. sergenti, and Ph. mascittii are present in low numbers and are less documented, limiting understanding of their potential role as vectors. This work provides the necessary basis for comparison of field data generated in the future.


Title: Répartition et abondance des phlébotomes en France : revue systématique. Abstract: Les changements globaux du climat contribuent à modifier la présence et l'activité des phlébotomes, ainsi que la répartition des pathogènes qu'ils transmettent (par exemple Leishmania et Phlebovirus), et conduisent à leur éventuelle extension vers le nord de la France. Pour prédire l'évolution de ces pathogènes et contrôler leur propagation, il est essentiel d'identifier et de caractériser la présence et l'abondance des vecteurs potentiels. Il n'existe cependant aucune publication récente décrivant la répartition des espèces de phlébotomes en France. Par conséquent, nous avons réalisé une revue systématique pour fournir des cartes de répartition et d'abondance dans le temps, ainsi qu'une clé dichotomique simplifiée pour les espèces françaises. La revue a respecté les lignes directrices PRISMA, aboutissant à 172 rapports de capture pertinents provenant de 168 études sur les 2 646 documents récupérés, dont 552 ont été lus et 228 analysés. Sept espèces ont été recensées et classées en trois groupes en fonction de leur abondance : les espèces de faible abondance, les espèces abondantes mais peu étudiées et les espèces vectrices abondantes. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of asthma among children and adolescents in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. METHODS: Exhaustive searches were conducted across databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Knowledge Core Collection, Embase, and Google Scholar. The selection criteria included studies reporting asthma prevalence in individuals aged 0 to 19 years, using validated questionnaires. Data were extracted and synthesized using the DerSimonian and Laird random effects model. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of asthma in Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) countries, among the 514,468 children and adolescents included in this meta-analysis, was 10.61%, synthesized from 95 studies. Among the countries studied, Qatar exhibited the highest prevalence at 16.69%, followed by Saudi Arabia at 16.57%, Iraq at 16.22%, Oman at 15.20%, and Afghanistan at 14.90%. Adolescents showed a slightly higher prevalence of asthma at 10.10% compared to children at 9.70%. Boys exhibited a higher prevalence at 11.48% compared to girls at 9.75%. Urban areas demonstrated a higher prevalence at 11.27% than rural areas at 8.29%. CONCLUSION: Efforts to reduce asthma prevalence in Arab countries and address underdiagnosis in African nations within the EMRO are crucial. Targeted interventions should focus on addressing environmental triggers and improving access to healthcare. Enhanced diagnostic capabilities and healthcare infrastructure are necessary in African countries. Collaborative action is essential to alleviate the asthma burden and promote respiratory health across the EMRO region.

ABSTRACT

This study is the investigation of Mediterranean aquaculture complete history, from 1950 to 2020. Both functional than geographical expansion of aquaculture is investigated, considering two main complementary aspects of aquaculture: farmed species and farming countries. According to the models proposed in this research, Nile tilapia and Egypt will dominate the future of Mediterranean aquaculture. Malta and Israel are the first producer countries, in relative terms. The most pervasive species are European sea bass and gilthead sea bream that are promising for a future expansion. In several countries, aquaculture has huge potentiality of development and it could grow with a factor of 5 or more, based on the ratio capture vs fishery on country size. Aquaculture total production in 2020 was of 2.8 Mln tons and it is expected to reach from 3.65 Mln tons in 2030. Aquaculture will grow in the countries and species that in this moment are dominant and the future of Mediterranean aquaculture will be characterized by the affirmation of these ones.

ABSTRACT

In a rapidly changing thermal environment, reptiles are primarily dependent on in situ adaptation because of their limited ability to disperse and the restricted opportunity to shift their ranges. However, the rapid pace of climate change may surpass these adaptation capabilities or elevate energy expenditures. Therefore, understanding the variability in thermal traits at both individual and population scales is crucial, offering insights into reptiles' vulnerability to climate change. We studied the thermal ecology of the endangered Greek meadow viper (Vipera graeca), an endemic venomous snake of fragmented alpine-subalpine meadows above 1600 m of the Pindos mountain range in Greece and Albania, to assess its susceptibility to anticipated changes in the alpine thermal environment. We measured preferred body temperature in artificial thermal gradient, field body temperatures of 74 individuals in five populations encompassing the entire geographic range of the species, and collected data on the available of temperatures for thermoregulation. We found that the preferred body temperature (Tp) differed only between the northernmost and the southernmost populations and increased with female body size but did not depend on sex or the gravidity status of females. Tp increased with latitude but was unaffected by the phylogenetic position of the populations. We also found high accuracy of thermoregulation in V. graeca populations and variation in the thermal quality of habitats throughout the range. The overall effectiveness of thermoregulation was high, indicating that V. graeca successfully achieves its target temperatures and exploits the thermal landscape. Current climatic conditions limit the activity period by an estimated 1278 h per year, which is expected to increase considerably under future climate scenarios. Restricted time available for thermoregulation, foraging and reproduction will represent a serious threat to the fitness of individuals and the persistence of populations in addition to habitat loss due to mining, tourism or skiing and habitat degradation due to overgrazing in the shrinking mountaintop habitats of V. graeca.

ABSTRACT

In light of the changing climate that jeopardizes future food security, genomic selection is emerging as a valuable tool for breeders to enhance genetic gains and introduce high-yielding varieties. However, predicting grain yield is challenging due to the genetic and physiological complexities involved and the effect of genetic-by-environment interactions on prediction accuracy. We utilized a chained model approach to address these challenges, breaking down the complex prediction task into simpler steps. A diversity panel with a narrow phenological range was phenotyped across three Mediterranean environments for various morpho-physiological and yield-related traits. The results indicated that a multi-environment model outperformed a single-environment model in prediction accuracy for most traits. However, prediction accuracy for grain yield was not improved. Thus, in an attempt to ameliorate the grain yield prediction accuracy, we integrated a spectral estimation of spike number, being a major wheat yield component, with genomic data. A machine learning approach was used for spike number estimation from canopy hyperspectral reflectance captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle. The spectral-based estimated spike number was utilized as a secondary trait in a multi-trait genomic selection, significantly improving grain yield prediction accuracy. Moreover, the ability to predict the spike number based on data from previous seasons implies that it could be applied to new trials at various scales, even in small plot sizes. Overall, we demonstrate here that incorporating a novel spectral-genomic chain-model workflow, which utilizes spectral-based phenotypes as a secondary trait, improves the predictive accuracy of wheat grain yield.

ABSTRACT

Sludge treatment reed bed planted (STRB) with Phragmites australis (P.australis) and Arundo donax (A.donax) was assessed in the presence of Eisenia fetida under control condition during the dry season. Worm-planted units were fed with mixed sewage sludge (dry and volatile solids of 29.44 g DS.L-1 and 24.23 g VS.L-1). Sludge loading rates (SLR) of 50, 60, and 70 kg DS m-2 year-1 were examined to assess dewatering efficiency. Surface layers in units with P.australis and A.donax achieved DS of 80 and 81% at a loading rate of 50 kg DS m-2 year-1, while their subsurface DS were 41 and 25%, respectively. Units with A.donax experienced plant loss when subjected to SLR exceeding 60 kg DS m-2 year-1. More than 10 cm of residual sludge accumulated on the top of units after a 2-month final rest. Evapotranspiration was greater in the unit with P.australis (5.23 mm day-1) compared to the unit with A.donax (4.24 mm day-1) while both were fed with 70 kg DS m-2 year-1. Water loss contributions from residual sludge layer, drained water, and evapotranspiration were 3, 46, and 51%, respectively. Units with P.australis indicated 20% higher water loss compared to units with A.donax. Although the drained water quality improved over time, it did not meet standard limits. The residual sludge layer contained macro and micronutrients, and heavy metals with a significant elemental order of N > Ca > P > S > mg > K (N:P:K = 31:8:1), Fe > Na > B > Mn > Mo and Zn > Cr > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cd. Overall, STRB could be a sustainable alternative technology to conventional sewage sludge management techniques.

BACKGROUND: Cats are now recognized as competent hosts for Leishmania infantum and a blood source for sand fly vectors. Although canine leishmaniosis (CanL) is endemic in Mediterranean Basin countries, large-scale epidemiological studies are lacking for feline leishmaniosis (FeL). This study aimed to assess the prevalence of L. infantum infections, associated risk factors, clinical signs, and clinicopathological abnormalities in domestic cat populations from six Mediterranean Basin countries. METHODS: From 2019 to 2022, blood and serum samples of cats (n = 2067) living in Italy (n = 300), Greece (n = 297), Portugal (n = 295), France (n = 231), Israel (n = 313), and Spain (n = 631) were collected along with animal data (i.e., age, sex, breed, housing conditions, and geographical origin), clinical signs, and laboratory blood test parameters. Cats were grouped according to their age as kittens (up to 1 year), young (older than 1 and younger than 7 years), mature (between 7 and 10 years), and senior (older than 10 years). Serum samples were tested for L. infantum by immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and blood samples of seropositive cats were tested for L. infantum kinetoplast deoxyribonucleic acid (kDNA). Viral infection by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) was molecularly addressed in all cats enrolled. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the association between the risk of L. infantum infection and independent variables, and among co-infection of L. infantum with FIV and/or FeLV, clinical signs, and clinicopathological abnormalities. RESULTS: Overall, 17.3% (358/2067) of cats scored positive for L. infantum by serological tests. Specifically, 24.7% were from Portugal, 23.2% from Greece, 16.6% from Israel, 15% from Spain, 13.3% from France, and 12.6% from Italy. Leishmania infantum DNA was detected in 15 seropositive animals. Housing condition and FIV infection proved to be risk factors for FeL. Leishmania seropositivity was significantly associated with weight loss, lymphadenomegaly, gingivostomatitis, and oral ulcers, as well as with reduced albumin and albumin/globulin ratio, increased total globulins and total proteins, leukocytosis, and thrombocytosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides, for the first time, a large-scale epidemiological survey on FeL and its clinical presentation, revealing that L. infantum circulates among domestic cats, especially shelter/free-roaming and FIV-infected animals, living in CanL endemic countries of the Mediterranean Basin.

ABSTRACT

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is an oncogenic DNA virus that plays a role in different cancer types. The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence and types of HPV and its relation with p16, EGFR and clinical findings in lung cancer. HPV and EGFR detection and genotyping of HPV were performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and p16 by immunohistochemistry. Fifty lung cancer patients and seven patients with non-neoplastic lung disease were enrolled in this study. HPV was positive in 78% (39/50) of lung cancer cases. HPV 51 was the most frequent type, followed by HPV 16. Moreover, p16 was positive in 24% (12/50) of the cancer patients, and all of these patients were HPV-positive, while 27 HPV-positive patients showed no p16 expression. There was no relationship between HPV infection and p16 (p = 0.05), gender (p = 0.42), age (p = 0.38), or smoking history (p = 0.68). Although not statistically significant, the HPV prevalence was found to be higher in cancer patients compared to non-neoplastic patients. The prevalence of HPV in lung cancer varies across different studies, which may be due to differences in the detection methods, number of patients, geographic regions, and vaccination status. Further studies are necessary to understand the role of HPV in lung cancer pathogenesis.

ABSTRACT

Understanding the soil biogeochemical responses to increasing global warming in the near future is essential for improving our capacity to mitigate the impacts of climate change on highly vulnerable Mediterranean ecosystems. Previous studies have primarily focused on the effects of warming on various biogeochemical processes. However, there is limited knowledge about how the changes in water availability associated to high temperatures can alter the bioavailability and dynamics of soil elements, thereby impacting ecosystem productivity, species composition, and pollution through soil biogeochemical and hydrological processes. In this study, we investigated the effects of long-term nighttime warming on the extractable concentrations of organic carbon (EOC), total nitrogen (ETN), total phosphorus (ETP), and 17 mineral elements (arsenic (As), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), sulfur (S), strontium (Sr), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn)) through environmental experiments in a semi-arid Mediterranean shrubland. We explored the potential biotic and abiotic mechanisms underlying the seasonal and long-term changes in extractable-mobilizable elemental composition and concentrations. Our findings revealed that prolonged warming led to higher mean annual soil temperature (with an average increase of 0.67 °C from 1999 to 2014), accumulation of soil organic matter (EOC) and extractable concentrations of soil elements (particularly increased ETP and extractable Ca, Mg, Cu, Sr, Mn, and As). These changes were attributed to uniformly higher activities of extracellular soil enzymes and/or lower plant photosynthetic and nutrient uptake capacity linked to more water deficit under warmer conditions. Seasonality unevenly altered element extractable concentrations, with soil microclimate (temperature and water content) and biological (soil microbial and plant) activity being the main drivers of this variability, thus influencing soil element composition. These results suggest significant fluctuations in the extractable concentrations of specific mineral elements in these soils, implying potential future variations in soil element composition as well as the loss of total element concentrations/contents in semi-arid Mediterranean ecosystems due to increasing warming. Therefore, these findings enhance our ability to predict ecosystem management strategies and mitigate the observed negative impacts on plant-soil systems and water quality in the context of climate change.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy is one of the public health problems that both mother and baby suffer from its consequences. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence and consequences of adolescent pregnancy in the Eastern Mediterranean region. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, four databases (PubMed, ProQuest, Web of Science and Scopus) were systematically searched for relevant articles published from 1990 to 2022. The screening process for articles was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Joanna Briggs checklists were used to assess the quality of included studies. A random effects model was performed for the meta-analysis. Narrative synthesis of adolescent pregnancy prevalence, as well as a meta-analysis of adolescent pregnancy prevalence was performed using STATA 14. RESULTS: The review included 12 studies and 94,189 study participants. The prevalence of adolescent pregnancy was [9% (95% CI 6.9, 11.2, p < 0.001)]. Pregnancy outcomes included preeclampsia [12.9%(95% CI 7.3,18.5, p < 0.001)], low birth weight [16.1%(95% CI 7.4-24.8, p < 0.001)], anemia [33%(95% CI 14.4, 51.7, p < 0.001)], and cesarean delivery [15.9%(95% CI 11.1-20.7, p < 0.001)].The results showed that 16.9% of deliveries were cesarean sections. CONCLUSION: The study's findings indicate that adolescent pregnancy is prevalent in the Middle East region and is associated with negative outcomes for teenagers. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out effective interventions to reduce adolescent pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we concentrate on the neolithisation process in Mediterranean Iberia through a diachronic view (from 8600-6800 cal. BP), focusing on social interaction as a factor in articulating new cultural ties. To do this, we apply techniques centred on similarities in material culture by applying Social Network Analysis (SNA). For the first time, we point to the geometric projectiles, taking into account their recurrence in both Mesolithic and Neolithic groups as part of their characteristic hunting equipment. We hypothesise that patterns of cultural variability would express the changing flow of information between communities according to their mobility strategies (last hunter-gatherer groups), including economic and social behaviour, and that these relationships will be restructured with the arrival of the newcomer farmers and herders and their new spatial and social arrangement. The results obtained allow us to describe a connected and homogeneous Late Mesolithic network dramatically structured by the Neolithic arrival. Since then, a heterogenous pattern emerged, involving connected periods, network ruptures, and small-world phenomena. The emergence of this characteristic could support the flow of information when the network presents a clustered structure, the last probably due to regionalisation events. These diachronic dynamics fit well with demographic and socioecological trends observed from regional literature.

In this work we aim to assess the impact of a WWTP effluent overland flow on properties and nutrient concentrations of a riparian soil, in order to explore the potential of this practice as a nature-based treatment. We set two study zones of 150 m2 on the field, one control and one that received the WWTP effluent on its surface for one month. Samples were taken before and after the effluent overland flow system, to test the impact of the effluent on soil properties through a BACI design, and after 17 months, to evaluate the recovery of the soil. Two depths were studied: 0-5 cm and 5-20 cm. The effluent overland flow triggered an increase in exchangeable sodium percentage and a decrease in nitrate concentration in both depths, and an increase in ammonium concentration in 0-5 cm depth. After 17 months, there were not found relevant differences among zones. In conclusion, this practice could be used in the purpose to reduce the nutrient concentrations of WWTP effluents. This practice could be relevant for regions where WWTP effluents are discharged in low-flow or intermittent streams, such as semi-arid regions or the Mediterranean region.

Grassland ecology is deteriorating along with a fall in biodiversity and ecosystem services as a result of climate change in the Mediterranean regions. Understanding the mechanism of feedback between soil properties related to available water and increasing aridity is a key component of preserving grassland ecosystems. Structural equation modelling was used to explore a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the feedback between soil properties related to available water and increasing aridity. In most cases, vegetation patches had significantly higher soil properties related to available water than inter-patches. Compared to inter-patches, the fine fractions of silt and clay content, soil organic carbon, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and available water under vegetation patches increased by 3.79%-7.64%, 31.08%-37.64%, 96.65%-141.14%, and 2.63%-9.21%, respectively, under limestone and mica schist lithologies. The fine fractions of silt and clay content, soil organic carbon, and available water were more responsive to the aridity index than the vegetation patch, while saturated hydraulic conductivity was more responsive to the vegetation patch than the aridity index. These complex relationships demonstrated that the available water was significantly positively affected by the vegetation pattern (0.09) and the aridity index (0.21-0.38). Soil texture had a significantly direct effect (0.43-0.53) on available water. Increasing aridity would strengthen the contrast in soil water availability while weakening the contrast in saturated hydraulic conductivity between vegetation patches and inter-patches. Available water was controlled by many aspects except vegetation pattern and aridity index. Understanding these relationships helped in predicting and mitigating the impacts of climate change on soil properties related to available water. The study offered fresh perspectives on the mechanism of vegetation pattern and aridity index on the various soil properties related to available water in arid and semiarid grasslands ecosystems under climate change.

BACKGROUND: Snake bites cause considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide, yet evidence from low- and middle-income countries remains fragmented. This is particularly the case in Eastern Mediterranean Region where available data on snake bites is relatively weak. Without reliable data, it is difficult to make the case for greater visibility and investment to address the snakebite burden in this Region. A scoping review was therefore conducted to summarize evidence on snake bites in countries of the Eastern Mediterranean. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The review employed manual and electronic searching methods of four databases plus Google Scholar, ultimately including 196 records from 20 countries published between 2000 and 2023. More than half originated from Iran, Morocco, and Pakistan. Many records lacked information on permanent sequalae, disability, snake species, and types and sources of antivenoms. When identified, offending snakes belonged to 30 species. Use of more than 12 types of antivenoms were described across the Region, and some were not specific to indigenous species. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Despite the relatively large number of publications identified, the data were concentrated in just a few countries in the Region, and there was little or no information available for the remainder. As is the case worldwide, disability associated with snake bites was poorly characterized and quantified across the Region. There is an urgent need for concrete action at national and regional levels to enhance epidemiological surveillance, research, and the collection of clinical, disability and outcomes data to inform policy and public health investment. Greater regional cooperation and collaboration is also crucial for addressing this neglected disease throughout the Region.

ABSTRACT

The absence of comprehensive risk analysis in residential development within certain regions often leads to substantial human and material losses during natural disasters. The Mediterranean region, particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, is projected to witness an upsurge in the frequency of natural calamities like floods, landslides, and forest fires. Consequently, meticulous risk assessment during the selection of residential areas becomes paramount in this context. This study is dedicated to the evaluation of suitable residential zones in Manavgat, a pivotal location in the Mediterranean region with a progressively growing population. The findings indicate that approximately 4.26 % of the research area is deemed appropriate for residential establishment. The identification of these locations is crucial for ensuring human and material safety, as well as enhancing overall biocomfort. Moreover, this study provides a foundation for long-term planning initiatives within the region and makes a significant contribution to the international evaluation literature by demonstrating the application of integrated risk assessment methodologies in urban planning.
