ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a new model, Case Analysis and Translation to Care in Hospital (CATCH), for the review of pediatric inpatient cases when an adverse event or "close call" had occurred. STUDY DESIGN: The curricular intervention consisted of an introductory podcast/workshop, mentorship of presenters, and monthly CATCH rounds over 16 months. The study was conducted with 22 pediatricians at a single tertiary care center. Intervention assessment occurred using participant surveys at multiple intervals: pre/post the intervention, presenter experience (post), physicians involved and mentors experience (post), and after each CATCH session. Paired t-tests and thematic analysis were used to analyze data. Time required to support the CATCH process was used to assess feasibility. RESULTS: Our overall experience and data revealed a strong preference for the CATCH model, high levels of engagement and satisfaction with CATCH sessions, and positive presenter as well as physicians-involved and mentor experiences. Participants reported that the CATCH model is feasible, engages physicians, promotes a safe learning environment, facilitates awareness of tools for case analysis, and provides opportunities to create "CATCH of the Day" recommendations to support translation of learning to clinical practice. CONCLUSIONS: The CATCH model has significant potential to strengthen clinical case rounds in pediatric hospital medicine. Future research is needed to assess the effectiveness of the model at additional sites and across medical specialities.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Transferable Credit System was developed to translate student workload into academic credits that are recognized in all countries, aiming at learning achievement. Autonomous learning is an objective that most educational programs promote as a strategic option to connect career, study environment and professional expectations. Objective: Analyzing the hours of autonomous work used by students to achieve the learning outcomes determined in the subject programs, their effectiveness in terms of academic performance and their correspondence with what is established in the study plan, adjusted to the Transferable Credit System. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive analysis was carried out using data from a manual record of students (n= 54) and teachers (n= 6) regarding six first level subjects of the Dentistry course of the Universidad Autónoma de Chile, Temuco campus. Results: The analysis revealed an incoherence between the hours of autonomous work used by the students with respect to what is established in the study plan and the hours of extra-classroom work estimated by the professors. Conclusion: It is concluded that the implementation of the Transferable Credit System alone does not ensure an improvement in student performance, requiring a review of the institutional procedure to define them; on the part of teachers a greater appropriation of the learning outcomes and the didactics necessary to guide students to obtain a higher yield of autonomous work, on the other hand, students must be responsible for the conscious use of these hours(AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Flipped learning (FL) is a model which allows students to adjust their study rhythm by taking advantage of class time to apply their knowledge. Although FL meets many of the needs of the traditional lecture-based model and the exclusively virtual model, its effectiveness in medical residency programs has not been thoroughly studied. Our study evaluates the efficacy of an FL model in a cardiology residency program based on the satisfaction and academic performance of the participants. METHOD: A prospective, observational, and descriptive study was conducted at Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology in Mexico City to evaluate the satisfaction and effectiveness of an FL model for acquiring competencies in electrocardiographic diagnosis among thirty-one first-year cardiology residents. The Advanced Electrocardiography Workshop and a virtual classroom were designed for the intervention. Four teachers taught the workshop and video classes, and ten medical specialists from the participants' areas of work performed evaluations of practical skills before and after the intervention. RESULTS: 75% of the participants rated the intervention as very favorable compared to the traditional and virtual models. The main advantages offered by the FL model were identified. An improvement of high statistical significance was observed in participants' academic performance after the intervention (P value < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The FL model has a high degree of acceptance among participants and teachers. Our study shows an improvement in academic performance after the intervention. Considering that the FL model is flexible and reproducible in other areas of medicine, it represents an excellent educational alternative that meets current needs.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The current context involves a generally increasing access of technologies and information, which has a strong impact on the classroom. Students are passive and reluctant to the traditional teaching model. Thus, innovations take center stage, such is the case of the Flipped Classroom (FC) model. The aim of this paper is to describe the application of FC in the teaching of human anatomy in a university environment. Four sessions of the General Anatomy program were intervened with a group of 41 students. The content was approached in 3 stages: pre-class, class and post-class, using multimedia resources and platforms such as Moodle and YouTube. The activities included virtual lessons, group work and minimalist quizzes. At the end of the semester a student perception survey was applied. Achievement percentage in pre-class were 40.45 %, 55.46 %, 43.75 % and 76.04 % for sessions 01 to 04. The grades for class group work were 5.8±0.34, 6.1±0.46, 6.0±0.78 and 6.7±0.38 for the sessions worked. In the survey 63.2 % and 76.3 % of the students stated that they "very satisfied" that FC enhances autonomous and collaborative work, respectively. 73.6 % preferred the FC model over the traditional one. The FC model has shown to promote a better evolution of the teaching-learning process, being adaptable to basic science disciplines such as human anatomy. A positive experience of this innovation must be supported by well-structured programming, support inside and outside the classroom, and the adjustment of successful strategies. There is an imminent need to adapt to the new context where access to technologies and information is a priority.

ABSTRACT

Study studies are a fundamental record for diagnosis, treatment plan, case presentation and evaluation of the progress of dental treatment. They are anatomo-physiological records of the dental arches to evaluate the dentition in the three planes of space and the occlusion in the cusp-fossa relationships, in a static and dynamic dimension. To obtain the study models, it is essential to obtain total impressions with various impression materials of the dental arches, which faithfully reproduce all the anatomical details, in order to later obtain a stone plaster model. Those obtained from an impression are generally based on dental plaster, which despite its improvements still retain some negative characteristics such as: low resistance to fracture by impact, low resistance to wear by abrasion, dimensional instability and radio opacity that prevents the simulation of endodontic procedures. In order to improve simulation in dental practice, the use of epoxy resin can be used to obtain models, this material is more resistant and has greater resistance to abrasion, it is radiolucent, which makes them Useful for replicating preparations and endodontic simulation procedures, the surface details obtained with epoxy resin are superior to those obtained with plaster. The use of simulators is an educational tool that favors the acquisition of certain abilities, skills, techniques and competencies necessary for the training of the student or professional in dentistry. In the present work, the technique for the elaboration of didactic dental models in epoxy resin to be used in the teaching of dental practice is described.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Student protagonism is paramount in the knowledge construction process. In this paper, we discuss a didactic-pedagogical resource called licentîa hypomnema (LH), inspired in portfolios and learning diaries in which student-teachers record their understandings and reflections regarding pedagogical topics learned at University in a meta-learning process on learning about teaching. The initial context of the research was a Psychological Development and Teaching course, offered in the Teacher Education program at Universidade de Brasília (UnB). Two of the authors, then Literacy and Languages Teaching students, produced their LH and peer assessed each other during the course. In their annotations, the student-authors recorded two pedagogical situations related to the use of LH in their own teaching practices, causing an impact on their formative path. These materials consist of the data for analysis and discussion. Moreover, we discuss possible uses of reflexive writing in teacher education and other learning contexts. Producing a LH supports knowledge production and allows students to connect theory and practice, which consequently influences the student's teaching practice. Since LH is a didactic-pedagogical resource and not a close-ended tool, both the context and individuals who use it should be considered.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This article addresses the issue of youth education in view of the impasses related to transmission in the encounter between generations. We point out the need to consider the transferential relationship between teachers and students as a necessary vector for the transmission of a certain relationship with knowledge, only possible for the love that the teacher directs to knowledge and to the students themselves - pedagogical love. Following in the same direction, we propose the construction of a School Romance as a possible way out in the face of the failure of the contemporary educational project, since it enables young people to make a fictional construction of themselves and of the world, which allows them to give new meanings to life, to know and to the school experience itself, in the wake of what was left as a legacy by the tradition of the generations that precede them

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Anatomy education has gathered together a great many of many new modalities and was modified from classical lecture-based and laboratory practice system to the blended modules. In the scope of the present study, we develop a new, practical, cost- effective and efficient three dimensional (3D) educational model, which aimed to be helpful for the detection and better understanding of basic neuroanatomy education. Tractographic imaging, fiber dissection, microscopic anatomy and plastination techniques were applied to the white matter regions of the two brains. After the photographs that were taken were converted to 3D images, the specimens were plastinated. By way of establishing an educational model as a whole, we applied it to 202 second-year medical students. The students were separated into two groups when they attended to the theoretical lecture. Group 1 took the classical laboratory education; on the other hand, Group 2 received the newly designed educational model. Pre and post-tests were introduced to each group before and after laboratory sessions, respectively. The success scores were put to comparison. The average achievement scores of each group showed increase significantly (p<0.05) after the laboratory sessions, besides the increase in the post-test results of Group 2 was more statistically significant (p<0.05). Consequently, this new educational model enriched by newly designed unified methods could be regarded as useful for grasping and improving the basic neuroanatomy knowledge.

ABSTRACT

When they discuss the Danish academic situation, Szulevicz, Lund and Lund (2021) address three questions about the academic training of psychology researchers: (a) why do Danish master's students in psychology more frequently choose the qualitative method for their research?; (b) what are psychology students working on?; and (c) what are they interested in? These three questions have led us to reflect on researcher training and the political and educational model universities adopt for psychology master's courses, not only in the Danish context, but also in other general contexts. In this commentary, we will discuss one strictly normative issue: what should the scientific ideal be for training researchers in psychology? Or more accurately: how can psychology contribute to discussions about the scientific ideal of researcher training in this knowledge area?

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: The current COVID-19 pandemic poses additional challenges to clinical teaching by affecting the normal development of onsite activities. Solutions are necessary to mitigate these effects. Objective: The aim of this study is to present a telesimulation (TS strategy) and analyze the instructional design perspective of undergraduate students of surgery. Material and methods: Twenty-six students participated in the experience, immersed in high-fidelity virtual scenarios through a video conference platform in which they could experience and analyze critical situations and decide a therapeutic plan. Data analysis was carried out using a quantitative-qualitative approach, focusing on the participants' experiences reported in a satisfaction survey, debriefing transcriptions (reflective stage) and an open-ended question about the perception of learning aimed at analyzing the activity in terms of the opportunities to learn clinical reasoning, non-technical skills and the attributes of the method as perceived by the students. Results: All the students would recommend the activity to another peer. During debriefing, the aspects of performance related with the diagnostic hypothesis, complementary investigation, treatment and non-technical skills emerge. Furthermore, there was a perception of learning beyond that offered by content reading. Conclusion : Telesimulation as a learning opportunity favors clinical teaching. Although TS can achieve high fidelity as a technique, it cannot neglect the technical and technological aspects that would alter its course.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to empirically test how learning strategies would fit into an undergraduate entrepreneur's profile. The design is cross-sectional with a sample of 527 The tested structural model adequately fits the data. It provided helpful information on learning strategies and entrepreneurial attitudes accounting for up to 20 % of variance of entrepreneurship intention. The learning strategies most related to entrepreneurial attitudes are those related to creativity, transference, and assess-ment of one's own performance. This paper provides for the first time evidence about the predictive power of several learning strategies on the entrepreneurial attitudes in connection with entrepreneurship intention (willingness and likelihood). This work increases our understanding of entrepreneurs' learning strategies, so that we can improve the design and implementation of educational resources to promote entrepreneurs' careers in emerging markets.Peruvian undergraduate students. A structural equation model was specified, estimated, and tested in Mplus 8.4. The model hypothesized direct effects of the different learning strategies on a factor of entrepreneurial attitudes (considering proactivity, pro-fessional ethics, empathy, innovation, autonomy, and risktaking dimensions) which, in turn, explained two indicators of entrepreneurship intention as outcomes.
