ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Tomato is an indispensable ingredient of the Mediterranean diet. Reformulation of traditional Mediterranean products to increase the adherence of consumers is becoming popular. In this study, a tomato snack bar enriched with olive powder and pea protein was developed by using microwave-vacuum drying. Formulations also included tomato powder (TP) and low-methoxylated pectin (LMP) as a structuring agent. RESULTS: The moisture content of microwave-vacuum-dried samples varied in the range 13.6-19.8% and water activity (aw ) values were ~0.6. LMP and TP concentrations affected the color of microwave-vacuum-dried samples. However, the color mainly changed in conventionally dried samples due to browning. In microwave-vacuum-dried samples, lycopene content decreased with increasing LMP, but increased with increasing TP. Textural properties of microwave-vacuum-dried snack bars increased with increasing LMP and TP. CONCLUSION: Both texture and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results indicated that there was a network formation due to the contribution of protein and pectin; however, the type of interaction was highly dependent on the drying mechanism. Nuclear magnetic resonance relaxometry data showed that microwave-vacuum-dried samples had a more uniform water distribution. Besides its time and energy efficiency, microwave-vacuum drying improved the color and textural properties of tomato snack bars compared to conventionally dried ones. © 2023 The Authors. BACKGROUND: Alexithymic and psychopathic traits are closely associated, but distinct constructs. Both have been associated with facial emotion processing deficits reflecting empathy deficits, however the underlying mechanism contributing to these deficits is not well-understood. METHODS: This study investigated facial emotion recognition performance in a non-clinical sample (N = 110) including both male and female participants, with varying levels of psychopathic and alexithymic traits. Facial emotion recognition was assessed using a computerized task, that presented different expressions depicting five emotional states (pain, fear, sadness, anger, happiness) and neutral expressions. RESULTS: Results suggest that the high psychopathic traits group reported lower accuracy compared to the low psychopathic traits group, indicating a more generalized deficit in facial affect recognition, across all emotions. The alexithymic groups (high vs. low) on the other hand did not differ in their performance on the task for any of the emotions presented. CONCLUSION: These findings add to the current body of research regarding face processing categorization deficits in relation to psychopathic and alexithymic traits and can inform prevention and intervention efforts that aim to facilitate facial emotion recognition in individuals with these personality traits.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different restoration methods applied to model teeth with a C-shaped root canal configuration on fracture strength. A total of 76 artificial tooth models were made using images of a molar tooth with a C-shaped root canal anatomy. The teeth were randomly divided into seven groups and different restorations, such as resin composite (2), bundled fiber post and resin composite (3), vertical fiber post and resin composite (4), horizontal fiber post and resin composite (5), woven fiber post and resin composite (6) and composite endocrown (7) were applied to the different groups except control group (1). The artificial teeth were embedded in acrylic blocks and subjected to fracture tests. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance, Monte Carlo Pearson Chi-square, Pearson Chi-square, and Fisher's exact test (P < 0.05). All groups differed in terms of fracture strength (P = 0.001). The highest fracture strength observed in group 6, and there was a significant difference between group 6 and group 4 based on a least significant difference pairwise comparison test. In terms of fracture type, the highest reparability percentage (100%) observed in group 7. The fracture strength values of endocrown restorations and woven fiber-reinforced resin composite restorations were found to be as high as those of the intact models. Considering also fracture restorability, endocrown restorations may be recommended for teeth with C-shaped root canal anatomy. The usage of the 3D tooth models in the studies offer a valuable opportunity in terms of the standardization of the samples, particularly in teeth with anatomical variations. This study shows that using of this technology, homogeneous groups can be created and experimental studies can be improved.
