ABSTRACT

Dust accumulation on photovoltaic (PV) panels in arid regions diminishes solar energy absorption and panel efficiency. In this study, the effectiveness of a self-cleaning nano-coating thin film is evaluated in reducing dust accumulation and improving PV Panel efficiency. Surface morphology and elemental analysis of the nano-coating and dust are conducted. Continuous measurements of solar irradiances and ambient temperature have been recorded. SEM analysis of dust revealed irregularly shaped micron-sized particles with potential adhesive properties, causing shading effects on the PV panel surface. Conversely, the coating particles exhibited a uniform, spherical shape, suggesting effective prevention of dust adhesion. Solar irradiance ranged from 120 W/m² to a peak of 720 W/m² at noon. Application of the self-cleaning nano-coating thin film consistently increased short circuit current (Isc), with the coated panel averaging 2.8 A, which is 64.7% higher than the uncoated panel's 1.7 A. The power output of the coated panel ranged from 7 W to 38 W, with an average of approximately 24.75 W, whereas the uncoated panel exhibited a power output between 3 W and 23 W, averaging around 14 W. These findings highlight the substantial potential of nano-coating for effective dust mitigation, particularly in dusty environments, thus enhancing PV system reliability.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Toxic leadership is abusive, destructive, and detrimental to nurses, can decrease nurse morale, increase stress levels, diminish organizational performance, and cause employee emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion, a key component of burnout, has been linked to decreased job performance and increased likelihood of engaging in deviant behaviors at work. Organizational cynicism, as a negative attitude or distrust towards the organization and its leadership, may exacerbate the relationship between toxic leadership and workplace deviance. This study aims to explore how toxic leadership, workplace deviance, emotional exhaustion, and organizational cynicism are interrelated in the nursing profession. METHOD: A multicenter descriptive, cross-sectional research design was conducted at three university hospitals affiliated with three Egyptian governorates: Zagazig, El-Fayoum, and Alexandria. Two hundred forty-three nurses completed the Personal and Job-related Data Questionnaire, Toxic Leadership Scale, Emotional Exhaustion Scale, Workplace Deviance Scale, and Organizational Cynicism Scale. Mediation analysis using SPSS PROCESS revealed that emotional exhaustion indirectly influences the relationship between toxic leadership and workplace deviance, while hierarchical multiple regression showed that organizational cynicism moderates this relationship, with linear regression confirming the predictive impact of these variables on workplace deviance. RESULTS: Toxic leadership exhibits a substantial positive influence on workplace deviance (B = 16.132, p < 0.001), as does emotional exhaustion (B = 8.760, p < 0.001) and organizational cynicism (B = 5.376, p = 0.036). Furthermore, the interaction terms of toxic leadership, organizational cynicism, and emotional exhaustion are significant (B = -3.012, p = 0.036). The negative coefficient of the interaction term implies a mitigating impact, indicating that the combined presence of high toxic leadership, high emotional exhaustion, and high organizational cynicism may counterintuitively reduce workplace deviance (t = -2.110). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that while toxic leadership, emotional exhaustion, and organizational cynicism each independently increase workplace deviance, their combined presence may unexpectedly reduce deviant behaviors. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING: These results highlight the significance of tackling toxic leadership practices and cultivating a positive organizational culture to enhance a healthier work environment and reduce instances of workplace deviance. Healthcare settings should prioritize interventions to improve leadership practices, enhance employee well-being, and cultivate a supportive organizational climate.

Among sixty-eight pseudomonads, isolate QCS59 from the rhizosphere of H. schimperi was selected based on its siderophore level. Production was optimal in Kings B supplemented with 2% peptone and 0.5% fructose at pH 6.5 and 25 °C for 72 h. Additionally, the threshold potential of iron was found at a concentration of 10 µM. After purification, the acidified siderophore presented a maximum absorption peak of 360 nm, while the neutral form presented a maximum of 414 nm, confirming its pyoverdine (PVD) nature. Furthermore, a major peak appeared at a retention time (RT) of 27.5 min during RP-HPLC, confirming its homogeneity. Interestingly, it demonstrated effective antibacterial activity, especially against Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.3 µg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 12.5 µg/mL. At ½ the MIC value, it inhibited 82.1% of well-established biofilms of Salmonella enterica. There was an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidative enzymes, especially catalase (CAT) in the treated bacteria because of the peroxidation of membrane lipids and oxidative stress, respectively. SEM proved cellular lysis and surface malformation in most of the treated bacteria. This study concludes that QCS59 siderophore is a promising antibacterial candidate for treating wastewater bacteria and skin pathogens.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is an inflammatory immune-mediated skin disease that affects nearly 2-3 % of the global population. The current study aimed to develop safe and efficient anti-psoriatic nanoformulations from Artemisia monosperma essential oil (EO). EO was extracted using hydrodistillation (HD), microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD), and head-space solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME), as well as GC/ MS was used for its analysis. EO nanoemulsion (NE) was prepared using the phase inversion method, while the biodegradable polymeric film (BF) was prepared using the solvent casting technique. A.monosperma EO contains a high percentage of non-oxygenated compounds, being 90.45 (HD), 82.62 (MADH), and 95.17 (HS-SPME). Acenaphthene represents the major aromatic hydrocarbon in HD (39.14 %) and MADH (48.60 %), while sabinene as monoterpene hydrocarbon (44.2 %) is the primary compound in the case of HS-SPME. The anti-psoriatic Effect of NE and BF on the successful delivery of A.monosperma EO was studied using the imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriatic model in mice. Five groups (n = 6 mice) were classified into control group, IMQ group, IMQ+standard group, IMQ+NE group, and IMQ+BF group. NE and BF significantly alleviated the psoriatic skin lesions and decreased the psoriasis area severity index, Baker's score, and spleen index. Also, they reduced the expression of Ki67 and attenuated the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 6, and interleukin 17. Additionally, NE and NF were able to downregulate the NF-κB and GSK-3ß signaling pathways. Despite the healing properties of BF, NE showed a more prominent effect on treating the psoriatic model, which could be referred to as its high skin penetration ability and absorption. These results potentially contribute to documenting experimental and theoretical evidence for the clinical uses of A.monosperma EO nanoformulations for treating psoriasis.

ABSTRACT

Early cancer detection and treatment depend on the discovery of specific genes that cause cancer. The classification of genetic mutations was initially done manually. However, this process relies on pathologists and can be a time-consuming task. Therefore, to improve the precision of clinical interpretation, researchers have developed computational algorithms that leverage next-generation sequencing technologies for automated mutation analysis. This paper utilized four deep learning classification models with training collections of biomedical texts. These models comprise bidirectional encoder representations from transformers for Biomedical text mining (BioBERT), a specialized language model implemented for biological contexts. Impressive results in multiple tasks, including text classification, language inference, and question answering, can be obtained by simply adding an extra layer to the BioBERT model. Moreover, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), long short-term memory (LSTM), and bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) have been leveraged to produce very good results in categorizing genetic mutations based on textual evidence. The dataset used in the work was created by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), which contains several mutations. Furthermore, this dataset poses a major classification challenge in the Kaggle research prediction competitions. In carrying out the work, three challenges were identified: enormous text length, biased representation of the data, and repeated data instances. Based on the commonly used evaluation metrics, the experimental results show that the BioBERT model outperforms other models with an F1 score of 0.87 and 0.850 MCC, which can be considered as improved performance compared to similar results in the literature that have an F1 score of 0.70 achieved with the BERT model.

ABSTRACT

Generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA), previously known as lymphangiomatosis, is a rare developmental disease characterized by abnormal proliferation of lymphatic vascular structures that may involve the dermis, soft tissue, bone, and visceral parenchyma. Being an uncommon condition and the lack of specific symptoms often result in a delayed diagnosis or even misdiagnosis, which, in addition to its progressive nature, can lead to dysfunction of vital organs, and ultimately, a poor prognosis. In this report, we present a unique case of GLA in an upper Egyptian female child. Increasing awareness of the possible phenotypic presentations of such anomalies can lead to early diagnosis and possibly more effective management before significant organ damage ensues.

ABSTRACT

An endophytic symbiont P. aeruginosa-producing anticandidal siderophore was recovered from mangrove leaves for the first time. Production was optimal in a succinate medium supplemented with 0.4% citric acid and 15 µM iron at pH 7 and 35 °C after 60 h of fermentation. UV spectra of the acidic preparation after purification with Amberlite XAD-4 resin gave a peak at 400 nm, while the neutralized form gave a peak at 360 nm. A prominent peak with RP-HPLC was obtained at RT 18.95 min, confirming its homogeneity. It was pH stable at 5.0-9.5 and thermally stable at elevated temperatures, which encourages the possibility of its application in extreme environments. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) against Candida spp. Were in the range of 128 µg/mL and lower. It enhanced the intracellular iron accumulation with 3.2-4.2-fold (as judged by atomic absorption spectrometry) with a subsequent increase in the intracellular antioxidative enzymes SOD and CAT. Furthermore, the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration due to cellular lipid peroxidation increased to 3.8-fold and 7.3-fold in C. albicans and C. tropicalis, respectively. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) confirmed cellular damage in the form of roughness, malformation, and production of defensive exopolysaccharides and/or proteins after exposure to siderophore. In conclusion, this anticandidal siderophore may be a promising biocontrol, nonpolluting agent against waterborne pathogens and pathogens of the skin. It indirectly kills Candida spp. by ferroptosis and mediation of hyperaccumulation of iron rather than directly attacking the cell targets, which triggers the activation of antioxidative enzymes.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common infection worldwide. The correlation between HCV and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is still mysterious. Therefore, the relationship between HCV and RCC was investigated. The study included 100 patients with RCC; 32 with HCV infection, and 68 without HCV infection. Expressions of viral proteins (NS3 and NS5A) were tested using an immune electron-microscope (IEM) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). IHC and quantitative real time-PCR investigated the presentation of human proteins TP53 and p21 genes. Transmission electron (TEM) detected viral-like particles in infected RCC tissues. The gene and protein expression of P53 was higher in HCV positive versus HCV negative patients and p21 was lower in HCV positive versus HCV negative in both tumor and normal tissue samples. Viral like particles were observed by TEM in the infected tumor and normal portion of the RCC tissues and the plasma samples. The IEM showed the depositions of NS3 and NS5A in infected renal tissues, while in noninfected samples, were not observed. The study hypothesizes that a correlation between HCV and RCC could exist through successfully detecting HCV-like particles, HCV proteins, and (p53 and p21) in RCC-infected patients.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder is a common cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) is a process by which the malignant cells can generate vascular-like structures formed of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) positive/CD31 negative extracellular matrix independent of angiogenesis and thus promotes tumor progression. N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 (NDRG1) is a protein that can modulate tumor angiogenesis; however, its role in regulating tumor angiogenesis and VM formation has not been previously investigated in UC. This study aims to evaluate the role of intra-tumor microvessel density (MVD) (as a surrogate measure of angiogenesis), VM, and NDRG1 in UC and their correlation with different clinicopathologic features, then assess the correlation between them in UC. Sixty specimens of UC of the bladder were included. PAS-CD31 immunohistochemical double staining method was used to evaluate the intra-tumor MVD and VM. Immunohistochemical expression of NDRG1 was also examined. VM and NDRG1 expression were detected in 41.7% and 83.3% of UC specimens respectively. The mean of intra-tumor MVD, VM area, and NDRG1 was significantly higher in tumors with higher grade, lymphovascular invasion, and higher T stage. NDRG1 expression was positively correlated with MVD and VM. We can suggest that MVD, VM, and NDRG1 may serve as poor prognostic markers for UC. The positive correlation between NDRG1 and both MVD and VM may provide the first evidence that NDRG1 can induce tumor angiogenesis and VM in UC which may offer a novel pathway for further therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

Renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign tumor of the kidney that can occur as a sporadic lesion or a part of tuberous sclerosis. A 77-year-old female patient with a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and an unclear history of left nephrectomy in 1999 presented with progressive shortness of breath and palpitations. Her vital signs showed elevated blood pressure, and the examination was benign and non-focal. A work-up showed multiple lesions in her lungs and right kidney, representing lymphangioleiomyomatosis. The patient was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis and was followed up by pulmonology and nephrology. She underwent embolization of the renal AML, after which her blood pressure (BP) was more controlled, and she reported feeling well and symptom-free. Renal AML, as a part of tuberous sclerosis, is a rare cause of secondary hypertension. Embolization of AML is effective in controlling BP.

Background: Adequate training in infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance is crucial for pharmacy students to participate in antibiotic stewardship programs and understand microbiology careers. Aim: The study was carried out to assess the knowledge and self-reported confidence in antibiotic resistance, antibiotic therapy, and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) among final-year undergraduate pharmacy students in Sudan. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in three universities using a 57-item online questionnaire between April and May 2022. Results: A total of 109 students (response rate 36%) participated and showed average knowledge scores of 5.6±1.7 (out of 10.0) for antibiotic resistance, 4.9±2.0 (out of 5.0) for appropriate antibiotic therapy, and 3.1±1.4 (out of 5.0) for AMS. No significant differences were observed among schools. Some students reported poor knowledge about antibiotic therapy and the consequences of resistance. One-third of students lacked confidence in interpreting microbiological results. Knowledge of antibiotic resistance among students' practice area after graduation was higher (p=0.017) and those interested in ID careers (5.8 vs 4.8) (p=0.037). Male students (5.6 vs 4.5) and those interested in ID careers (4.3 vs 3.4) (p<0.001) had higher scores of appropriate antibiotic therapy. Students attended antibiotic resistance courses (51.5 vs 45.2), and those interested in ID significantly had higher self-confidence (55.3 vs 45.8) (p=0.008). Conclusion: Pharmacy students in Sudan have substantial knowledge of AMS and antibiotic resistance with poor knowledge of antibiotic therapy. Adequate training about infectious diseases and related topics is recommended to improve pharmacy students' understanding of microbiological findings, other competencies, and skills to incorporate in antimicrobial stewardship.

This study aimed to examine the immunohistochemical expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition biomarkers: P4HA2 and SLUG in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) specimens, then to assess their relation to clinicopathological features including KRAS mutations and patients' survival, and finally to study the correlation between them in CRC. The result of this study showed that SLUG and P4HA2 were significantly higher in association with adverse prognostic factors: presence of lympho-vascular invasion, perineural invasion, higher tumor budding, tumor stage, presence of lymph node metastasis, and presence of distant metastasis. CRC specimens with KRAS mutation were associated with significant higher SLUG and P4HA2 expression. High expression of both SLUG and P4HA2 was significantly unfavorable prognostic indicator as regards overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). In KRAS mutated cases, high P4HA2 expression was the only significant poor prognostic indicator as regarding DFS. In conclusions, our data highlight that both SLUG and P4HA2 expression may serve as potentially important poor prognostic biomarkers in CRC and targeting these molecules may be providing a novel therapeutic strategy. In KRAS mutation group, high P4HA2 expression is the only independent prognostic factor for tumor recurrence, so it can be suggested to be a novel target for therapy.

Unlike other growth stages of wheat, very few studies on drought tolerance have been done at the seedling stage, and this is due to the complexity and sensitivity of this stage to drought stress resulting from climate change. As a result, the drought tolerance of wheat seedlings is poorly understood and very few genes associated with drought tolerance at this stage were identified. To address this challenge, a set of 172 spring wheat genotypes representing 20 different countries was evaluated under drought stress at the seedling stage. Drought stress was applied on all tested genotypes by water withholding for 13 days. Two types of traits, namely morphological and physiological traits were scored on the leaves of all tested genotypes. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is one of the effective genetic analysis methods that was used to identify target single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and candidate genes for later use in marker-assisted selection. The tested plant materials were genotyped using 25k Infinium iSelect array (25K) (herein after it will be identified as 25K) (for 172 genotypes) and genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) (for 103 genotypes), respectively. The results of genotyping revealed 21,093 25K and 11,362 GBS-SNPs, which were used to perform GWAS analysis for all scored traits. The results of GWAS revealed that 131 and 55 significant SNPs were controlling morphological and physiological traits, respectively. Moreover, a total of eight and seven SNP markers were found to be associated with more than one morphological and physiological trait under drought stress, respectively. Remarkably, 10 significant SNPs found in this study were previously reported for their association with drought tolerance in wheat. Out of the 10 validated SNP markers, four SNPs were associated with drought at the seedling stage, while the remaining six SNPs were associated with drought stress at the reproductive stage. Moreover, the results of gene enrichment revealed 18 and six pathways as highly significant biological and molecular pathways, respectively. The selection based on drought-tolerant alleles revealed 15 genotypes with the highest number of different drought-tolerant alleles. These genotypes can be used as candidate parents in future breeding programs to produce highly drought-tolerant genotypes with high genetic diversity. Our findings in this study provide novel markers and useful information on the genetic basis of drought tolerance at early growth stages.

This study demonstrates the effect of fermented botanical product (FBP) on Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum-induced bacterial wilt disease and unravels its action mechanism. Soaking with diluted FBP solutions (0.1%-0.5%) significantly suppressed bacterial wilt in tomato plants, and FBP-treated tomato plants grew well against R. pseudosolanacearum infection. Growth assays showed that FBP had no antibacterial effect but promoted R. pseudosolanacearum growth. In contrast, few or no R. pseudosolanacearum cells were detected in aerial parts of tomato plants grown in FBP-soaked soil. Subsequent infection assays using the chemotaxis-deficient mutant (ΔcheA) or the root-dip inoculation method revealed that FBP does not affect pathogen migration to plant roots during infection. Moreover, FBP-pretreated tomato plants exhibited reduced bacterial wilt in the absence of FBP. These findings suggest that the plant, but not the pathogen, could be affected by FBP, resulting in an induced resistance against R. pseudosolanacearum, leading to a suppressive effect on bacterial wilt.

ABSTRACT

To study the impact of four gene polymorphisms on acute renal allograft rejection (AR) and graft survival among Egyptian population. These 4 gene polymorphisms include: (1) CD 28 (rs3116496), (2) CD86 (rs1129055), (3) CTLA-4 (rs3087243), (4) PD-1 (rs2227982). This is a non-concurrent cohort study including 50 kidney transplant recipients diagnosed histopathologically as (AR) [study group] and another 50 matched allograft recipients without AR [control group]. Blood samples were taken from both groups and subjected to genotyping for the selected four genetic polymorphisms by TaqMan genotyping assay. The difference in genotypic distribution of CD 28: rs3116496 and CD86: rs1129055 wasn't statistically significant between the study and control groups (P = 0.22 and 0.33 respectively) and also both polymorphisms had no effect on graft survival (P = 0.36 and 0.74 respectively) while the addition of C allele to IVS3 +17T/C polymorphism in CD28 gene showed a protective effect against AR (P = 0.03). CTLA-4: rs3087243 AG genotype showed a protective effect against AR as it was more frequent in no rejection group compared to those with AR (P = 0.001) with a statistically significant impact on graft survival (P < 0.001), while PD-1: rs2227982 AG genotype was equally distributed between both groups (variant of unknown significance). There was no detected association between CD86 polymorphism: rs1129055 and CD 28 polymorphism: rs3116496 with the development of AR. However, C allele of CD 28 IVS3 +17T/C polymorphism and CTLA-4 polymorphism: rs3087243AG genotype both demonstrated a protective effect against AR.

ABSTRACT

The rapid diagnosis of infectious diarrhea is lifesaving for intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This study evaluated a commercially available multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (BioFire FilmArray) for the diagnosis of parasitic and bacterial infections in ICU patients with secretory diarrhea in comparison to other traditional methods. This cross-sectional study included 50 subjects with infectious diarrhea. Their stool samples were subjected to macroscopic and microscopic examinations, concentration techniques, permanent staining techniques, stool culture, identification of bacterial infection by the Vitek 2 Compact 15 System, and molecular diagnosis of bacterial or parasitic infections by BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR. Parasitological examination showed that the sensitivity and specificity of BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR in the diagnosis of Cryptosporidium oocysts were 83.33% and 100.0%, respectively compared with 100% and 92.5% in diagnosis of G. lamblia cysts. Bacteriological examination showed that the sensitivity and specificity of BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR in the diagnosis of E. coli and salmonella were 100% and 100.0%, respectively. The BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR gastrointestinal (GI) panel assay was more sensitive and specific in the diagnosis of bacterial infections than parasitic infections. The BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR GI panel assay was less sensitive in the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts than traditional methods. In conclusion, the BioFire FilmArray multiplex PCR may be useful for rapid diagnosis of ICU patients with infectious diarrhea.

ABSTRACT

Data on utilization and safety of mitral Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) among hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients is limited. Our study aimed to assess the national utilization, safety, and clinical outcomes of TEER procedures among HCM patients using a nationwide real-world cohort. HCM patients undergoing TEER hospitalizations between 2015-2020 were identified using ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, (ICD-10-CM/PCS). HCM-TEER and HCM No-TEER formed the two comparison groups. Demographic characteristics, baseline comorbidities, procedural complications, inpatient mortality, length of stay (LOS), and cost of hospitalization were compared between the propensity-matched cohorts. Numeric values of 10 or less were not reported per NIS data use agreements. A total of 39,625 weighted cases of TEER were identified from 2015-2020. Of the included patients, 335 patients had the HCM diagnosis. The median age of the HCM-TEER group was 74 (70-79) vs. 79 (72-85) for the no-TEER cohort. The TEER procedure was more frequently performed among Caucasians (86.57%) and females (53.73%). The TEER procedure among HCM patients had similar in-hospital mortality (Adjusted odds ratio: aOR 1.50, 95% CI [0.68-3.29]; p = 0.30) and net adverse cardiac events (NACE) (aOR 1.16, 95% CI [0.73-1.85]; p = 0.51). TEER among HCM was associated with higher odds of gastrointestinal/hematological (aOR 2.33, 95% CI [1.29-4.19]; p = 0.003) complications. However, the odds of cardiac complications (aOR 0.57, 95% CI [0.33-0.96]; p = 0.03) were not higher. The median length of stay was similar in both the groups (median: 2 vs. 2, p = 0.74), although TEER among HCM was associated with higher costs of hospitalization ($44729.36 vs. $40513.82, p < 0.01). TEER is a minimally invasive procedure and could be a safe option for symptomatic HCM patients with significant MR who are poor surgical candidates. Mitral TEER among HCM has been increasingly utilized in recent years in the United States more commonly in obstructive HCM and is associated with no difference in mortality and net adverse cardiac events but higher odds for gastrointestinal/hematological complications than non-HCM patients.
