ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to describe differences in nurse leaders' ethical decision-making confidence and their professional values based on identified characteristics and to explore the relationship between ethical decision making and professional values. BACKGROUND: Nurse leaders have multiple duties and obligations toward their patients, other staff, and the organizations where they work. However, ethical decisions can be complex, requiring the guidance of professional values and critical appraisal of the situation. METHODS: This study was conducted using a correlational design. Convenience sampling was used, resulting in a sample of 56 nurse leaders in various positions. RESULT: Ethical decision making and professional values were found to be strongly correlated. CONCLUSION: Ethical decision making and professional values are highly correlated in this sample. Understanding the importance of the effects of certain factors on ethical decision making can assist in forming an environment supportive of ethical practices for nurses.

A robust immune response is required for resistance to pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), the primary disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). However, pharmaceutical inhibition of T cell immune checkpoint molecules can result in the rapid development of active disease in latently infected individuals, indicating the importance of T cell immune regulation. In this study, we investigated the potential role of CD200R during Mtb infection, a key immune checkpoint for myeloid cells. Expression of CD200R was consistently downregulated on CD14+ monocytes in the blood of subjects with active TB compared to healthy controls, suggesting potential modulation of this important anti-inflammatory pathway. In homogenized TB-diseased lung tissue, CD200R expression was highly variable on monocytes and CD11b+HLA-DR+ macrophages but tended to be lowest in the most diseased lung tissue sections. This observation was confirmed by fluorescent microscopy, which showed the expression of CD200R on CD68+ macrophages surrounding TB lung granuloma and found expression levels tended to be lower in macrophages closest to the granuloma core and inversely correlated with lesion size. Antibody blockade of CD200R in a biomimetic 3D granuloma-like tissue culture system led to significantly increased Mtb growth. In addition, Mtb infection in this system reduced gene expression of CD200R. These findings indicate that regulation of myeloid cells via CD200R is likely to play an important part in the immune response to TB and may represent a potential target for novel therapeutic intervention.

Objectives: This study aims to assess cancer patients' accessibility to healthcare services and perceived barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Khartoum state, aiming to explore the consequent impact on cancer patients. It also aims to determine the coping strategies used by patients to overcome these barriers. Study design: This is a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study. Methods: Data were collected from August 2020 to March 2021, with a sample size of 316 cancer patients. Systemic random sampling and SPSS version 25 were utilized for data collection and analysis. Results: The study found that 55.7 % of the surveyed cancer patients had experienced disruptions in accessing essential cancer healthcare services during the lockdown. The study identified the most common cancers as breast (19.7 %), gastrointestinal (19 %), and ovarian (11 %). Notable barriers included governmental travel restrictions (51.6 %), outpatient service closures (41.8 %), and high costs (27.8 %). Additionally, delayed treatment was directly associated with a 33.3 % fatality rate among the participants. Conclusions: This study highlights the considerable negative impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on cancer care in Sudan. Recommendations include a focus on telemedicine as an alternative form of patient consultation, the expansion of health insurance schemes to encompass cancer treatments, and strengthening healthcare infrastructure to facilitate cancer care during crises.

For a car that is propelled by an armature-controlled DC motor This study proposes an adjustable linear positioning control. In this paper, to optimize the parameters of the car's position controller the sine cosine optimization algorithm (SCA) is utilized, with support from the Balloon effect (BE), The BE is incorporated to enhance the responsiveness of the traditional sine cosine optimization algorithm when faced with external disturbances and variations in system parameters. In the proposed approach, the determined value of the open loop transfer function of the motor and the updated values of the controller gains serve as the basis for the modified sine cosine algorithm's objective function (OF). Under the influence of changes in motor parameters and step load disturbances, the system using the suggested controller is evaluated. Results from simulations and experiments show that the proposed adaptive controller, which implements the modified sine cosine algorithm, enhances the system's overall performance in the presence of load disturbances and parameter uncertainties.

There is an increasing focus on genetically altering Paulownia trees to enhance their resistance against fungal infections, given their rapid growth and quality wood production. The aim of this research was to establish a technique for incorporating two antimicrobial thionin genes, namely thionin-60 (thio-60) and thionin-63 (thio-63), into Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia hybrid 9501 through the utilization of chitosan nanoparticles. The outcomes revealed the successful gene transfer into Paulownia trees utilizing chitosan nanoparticles. The effectiveness of thionin proteins against plant pathogens Fusarium and Aspergillus was examined, with a specific focus on Fusarium equiseti due to limited available data. In non-transgenic Paulownia species, the leaf weight inhibition percentage varied from 25 to 36 %, whereas in transgenic species, it ranged from 22 to 7 %. In general, Paulownia species expressing thio-60 displayed increased resistance to F. equiseti, while those expressing thio-63 exhibited heightened resistance to A. niger infection. The thionin proteins displayed a strong affinity for the phospholipid bilayer of the fungal cell membrane, demonstrating their capability to disrupt its structure. The transgenic plants created through this technique showed increased resistance to fungal infections. Thionin-60 demonstrated superior antifungal properties in comparison to thio-63, being more effective at disturbing the fungal cell membrane. These findings indicate that thio-60 holds potential as a novel antifungal agent and presents a promising approach for enhancing the antimicrobial traits of genetically modified Paulownia trees.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency of prematurity. Postulated mechanisms leading to inflammatory necrosis of the ileum and colon include activation of the pathogen recognition receptor Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and decreased levels of transforming growth factor beta (TGFß). Extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAMPT), a novel damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP), is a TLR4 ligand and plays a role in a number of inflammatory disease processes. To test the hypothesis that eNAMPT is involved in NEC, an eNAMPT-neutralizing monoclonal antibody, ALT-100, was used in a well-established animal model of NEC. Preterm Sprague-Dawley pups delivered prematurely from timed-pregnant dams were exposed to hypoxia/hypothermia and randomized to control-foster mother dam-fed rats, injected IP with saline (vehicle) 48 h after delivery; control + mAB-foster dam-fed rats, injected IP with 10 µg of ALT-100 at 48 h post-delivery; NEC-orally gavaged, formula-fed rats injected with saline; and NEC + mAb-formula-fed rats, injected IP with 10 µg of ALT-100 at 48 h. The distal ileum was processed 96 h after C-section delivery for histological, biochemical, molecular, and RNA sequencing studies. Saline-treated NEC pups exhibited markedly increased fecal blood and histologic ileal damage compared to controls (q < 0.0001), and findings significantly reduced in ALT-100 mAb-treated NEC pups (q < 0.01). Real-time PCR in ileal tissues revealed increased NAMPT in NEC pups compared to pups that received the ALT-100 mAb (p < 0.01). Elevated serum levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and NAMPT were observed in NEC pups compared to NEC + mAb pups (p < 0.01). Finally, RNA-Seq confirmed dysregulated TGFß and TLR4 signaling pathways in NEC pups that were attenuated by ALT-100 mAb treatment. These data strongly support the involvement of eNAMPT in NEC pathobiology and eNAMPT neutralization as a strategy to address the unmet need for NEC therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hypertension (UH) is a significant public health issue in both developed and developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the clinical spectrum and degrees of severity of hypertension, antihypertensive use, and factors associated with UH. METHOD: Hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the emergency-department of Mogadishu Somali Turkey Training and Research Hospital from September 2021 to August 2022. A total of 278 hypertensive patients were selected using a convenient sampling technique. Data was entered into and cleaned by Excel and exported to SPSS version-26.0 for analysis. A binary logistic regression model (AOR, 95 % CI and p-value<0.05) was used to determine the predictors of UH. RESULTS: The prevalence of UH was 62 %(n = 172). Of the total respondents, 144(51.8 %) were males. The predominance of the respondents(n = 147, 52.9 %) were in the age group 40-69years. Almost 65.8 %(n = 183) of the participants were married. 112(40.3 %) of the participants had no formal education. The majority of the participants (n = 192, 69.1 % %) were unemployed. 225(81 %) patients had at least one or more coexisting diseases. Diabetes was the most common comorbid(47.4 %). The most common clinical manifestations observed in the study group were headache(21 %). According to the stages of hypertension, most of the patients have a Hypertensive crisis(20.9 %). Among the participants, 50 % were on calcium channel blockers(CCBs). Additionally, the majority (53.2 %) were receiving monotherapy. Patients who have no comorbidity (AOR = 0.178, 95 % CI:0.066-0.447), not performed diet control (AOR = 15.475, 95 % CI:6.666-35.929), and non-adherence to physical-activity (AOR = 5.585, 95 % CI:2.834-12.792) are independent predictors of UH. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of UH among patients with hypertension in Somalia was high. Unhealthy lifestyles and non-adherence to physical activity were the major modifiable risk factors for UH. Regular health education during follow-up visits by nurses and physicians is crucial in preventing the issue by providing continuous information on lifestyle practices and the potential complications associated with hypertension.

The work was based on N-(4-Aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol (ABEI)-functionalized Fe-MIL-101 and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as sensing materials, and an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor was constructed for detecting acetamiprid. As a metal-organic framework (MOF) material, Fe-MIL-101, was renowned for its unique three-dimensional network structure and efficient catalytic capability. ABEI, a common ECL reagent, was widely applied. ABEI was introduced into the Fe-MIL-101 structure as a luminescence functionalization reagent to form Fe-MIL-101@ABEI. This approach avoided limitations on the loading capacity of luminescent reagents imposed by modification and encapsulation methods. With character of excellent catalytic activity and ease of bioconjugation, AuNPs offered significant advantages in biosensing. Leveraging the reductive properties of ABEI, AuNPs were reduced around Fe-MIL-101@ABEI, resulting in the modified luminescent functionalized material denoted as Fe-MIL-101@ABEI@AuNPs. An aptamer was employed as a recognition element and was modified accordingly. The aptamer was immobilized on Fe-MIL-101@ABEI@AuNPs through gold-sulfur (Au-S) bonds. After capturing acetamiprid, the aptamer induced a decrease in the ECL signal intensity within the ABEI-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) system, enabling the quantitative detection of acetamiprid. The aptasensor displayed remarkable stability and repeatability, featured a detection range of 1×10-3-1×102 nM, and had a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 pM (S/N=3), which underscored its substantial practical application potential.

Background and Objectives: Functional gastric stenosis, a consequence of sleeve gastrectomy, is defined as a rotation of the gastric tube along its longitudinal axis. It is brought on by gastric twisting without the anatomical constriction of the gastric lumen. During endoscopic examination, the staple line is deviated with a clockwise rotation, and the stenosis requires additional endoscopic manipulations for its transposition. Upper gastrointestinal series show the gastric twist with an upstream dilatation of the gastric tube in some patients. Data on its management have remained scarce. The objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of endoscopic balloon dilatation in the management of functional post-sleeve gastrectomy stenosis. Patients and Methods: Twenty-two patients with functional post-primary-sleeve-gastrectomy stenosis who had an endoscopic balloon dilatation between 2017 and 2023 were included in this retrospective study. Patients with alternative treatment plans and those undergoing endoscopic dilatation for other forms of gastric stenosis were excluded. The clinical outcomes were used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of balloon dilatation in the management of functional gastric stenosis. Results: A total of 45 dilatations were performed with a 30 mm balloon in 22 patients (100%), a 35 mm balloon in 18 patients (81.82%), and a 40 mm balloon in 5 patients (22.73%). The patients' clinical responses after the first balloon dilatation were a complete clinical response (4 patients, 18.18%), a partial clinical response (12 patients, 54.55%), and a non-response (6 patients, 27.27%). Nineteen patients (86.36%) had achieved clinical success at six months. Three patients (13.64%) who remained symptomatic even after achieving the maximal balloon dilation of 40 mm were considered failure of endoscopic dilatation, and they were referred for surgical intervention. No significant adverse events were found during or following the balloon dilatation. Conclusions: Endoscopic balloon dilatation is an effective and safe minimally invasive procedure in the management of functional post-sleeve-gastrectomy stenosis.

Purpose: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition characterized by compression of the median nerve (MN) within the carpal tunnel. Accurate diagnosis and assessment of CTS severity are crucial for appropriate management decisions. This study aimed to investigate the combined diagnostic utility of B-mode ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE) for assessing the severity of CTS in comparison to electrodiagnostic tests (EDT). Materials and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted over 9-month periods at a tertiary care hospital. A total of 48 patients (36 females, 12 males; mean age 44 ± 10.9 years; age range 28-57 years) with clinically suspected CTS were enrolled. All patients underwent EDT, US, and SWE. Based on the EDT results, CTS cases were categorized into four groups: mild, moderate, severe, and negative. The cross-sectional area (CSA) and elasticity (E) of the MN were measured at the tunnel inlet (CSAu and Eu) and pronator quadratus region (CSAo and Eo). The differences (CSAu-CSAo and Eu-Eo) were calculated. The primary outcomes were the diagnostic performance of CSAu, CSAu-CSAo, Eu, and Eu-Eo in differentiating moderate/severe from mild/negative CTS compared to EDT findings. Secondary outcomes included a correlation of US/SWE parameters with EDT grades and between each other. ANOVA, correlation, regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed. Results: CSAu and CSAu-CSAo increased progressively with worsening CTS severity. E measurements were significantly higher in moderate-to-severe CTS compared to mild or negative cases. The combined metric of CSAu-CSAo at a 5 mm threshold exhibited enhanced performance, with a higher sensitivity (83.3%), specificity (100%), and area under the curve (AUC) (0.98), surpassing the results of CSAu when used independently. Similarly, the SWE measurements indicated that Eu-Eo at a 56.1kPa cutoff achieved an AUC of 0.95, with a sensitivity of 93.3% and specificity of 94.4%, outperforming the metrics for Eu when used alone, which had an AUC of 0.93, with identical sensitivity and specificity values (93.3% and 94.4%, respectively). Conclusion: The integration of ultrasound, shear wave elastography, and electrodiagnostic tests provides a comprehensive approach to evaluate anatomical and neurological changes and guide management decisions for CTS.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdoses in the USA have increased to unprecedented levels. Administration of the opioid antagonist naloxone can prevent overdoses. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to reveal the pharmacoepidemiologic patterns in naloxone prescribing to Medicaid patients from 2018 to 2021 as well as Medicare in 2019. DESIGN: Observational pharmacoepidemiologic study SETTING: US Medicare and Medicaid naloxone claims INTERVENTION: The Medicaid State Drug Utilisation Data File was utilised to extract information on the number of prescriptions and the amount prescribed of naloxone at a national and state level. The Medicare Provider Utilisation and Payment was also utilised to analyse prescription data from 2019. OUTCOME MEASURES: States with naloxone prescription rates that were outliers of quartile analysis were noted. RESULTS: The number of generic naloxone prescriptions per 100 000 Medicaid enrollees decreased by 5.3%, whereas brand naloxone prescriptions increased by 245.1% from 2018 to 2021. There was a 33.1-fold difference in prescriptions between the highest (New Mexico=1809.5) and lowest (South Dakota=54.6) states in 2019. Medicare saw a 30.4-fold difference in prescriptions between the highest (New Mexico) and lowest states (also South Dakota) after correcting per 100 000 enrollees. CONCLUSIONS: This pronounced increase in the number of naloxone prescriptions to Medicaid patients from 2018 to 2021 indicates a national response to this widespread public health emergency. Further research into the origins of the pronounced state-level disparities is warranted.

Introduction In December 2019, COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, China, triggering a global pandemic. However, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education ensured the safe continuation of teaching and learning activities. Amid the pandemic, health sciences students were exposed to diverse learning opportunities. Methods This study seeks to explore their experiences with online teaching. Conducted as a descriptive cross-sectional study, it involved 397 health sciences students from three universities in the Makkah province who had encountered both traditional and virtual teaching methods. Results Most participants were female (71.1%), predominantly from Jeddah city (76.5%). The highest agreement scores were observed for student comprehension during online sessions (61.1%). A significant proportion (74.4%) found paying attention during online lectures easier than traditional ones. Blackboard emerged as the preferred educational platform for online teaching. Notably, there were no significant variations in students' perceptions of online teaching based on location, gender, or specialisation. Approximately 54.7% of students preferred watching their instructors through a webcam during online lectures. Conclusion Medical educators can leverage these findings to develop standardised teaching protocols and enhance the effectiveness of online education systems. The study underscores the importance of instructors using webcams during online teaching sessions, as it allows students to visually connect with their instructors, potentially improving the learning experience.

Aim of the study: Jaundice in newborns is a sign of skin and sclera pigmentation. Hyperbilirubinemia and these phenomena do, however, have a relationship. According to many clinical studies, elevated blood bilirubin and low vitamin E (VE) levels in newborns are associated. The aim of the study was to investigate the association of oxidative stress of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in patients who underwent phototherapy with additional vitamin E supplementation (25 mg/kg/day over the course of three days) and patients without additional vitamin E. Material and methods: A set of 100 neonatal indirect hyperbilirubinemia patients was enrolled at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) of the pediatric departments at Al Azhar University Hospitals during the period from February 2021 to October 2022 after obtaining signed written informed consent of all neonates' parents with an explanation of the aim of study. Results: Significant differences were found between the studied groups regarding serum bilirubin on the third day of admission (p = 0.039). Patients who were treated with vitamin E had lower serum bilirubin on the third day of admission (8.25 ±3.41) than the control group (11.66 ±3.22). Also, among the VE group, serum bilirubin was significantly decreased on the third day of admission (8.25 ±3.41) compared to zero days of admission (14.10 ±4.39) (p = 0.041). Conclusions: Vitamin E supplementation has an important role in treatment of indirect hyperbilirubinemia in neonates. Early administration of vitamin E in preterm neonates resulted in a significant decrease of serum bilirubin and increased total antioxidant capacity. Vitamin E supplementation in full term decreased the duration of phototherapy.

Escitalopram is widely prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder with a well-documented side effects profile. Peripheral edema, however, is a rarely reported adverse reaction that warrants further work up. This paper summarizes the case of a 58-year female patient who developed transient bilateral peripheral edema following the administration of low dose escitalopram. This case underscores the necessity for clinicians to be familiar with even rare potential side effects of commonly prescribed medications. It also suggests a need for patient education regarding the importance of reporting new symptoms promptly.

Purpose: This study was conducted to release the debate and examine the short-term impact of KT on the quadriceps muscle following arthroscopic surgery for partial meniscectomy. Patients and Methods: As part of a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 40 people who had an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) were randomly put into two groups, A and B. Group A received Kinesio tape (KT) for the superficial heads of the quadriceps muscle, while group B received placebo KTk. After 10 minutes of KT application, the peak torque of both groups was measured using a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Results: Peak torque showed a significant increase in group A in comparison with group B during angular velocity 60â¦/Sec. (F (1, 130) = 58.9, p <0.001, Æ2 =0.31) and during angular velocity 180â¦/Sec. (F (1, 38) = 25.0, p <0.001, Æ2 =0.40). Conclusion: After APM, individuals experienced an immediate and significant improvement in the quadriceps' peak torque following KT application to the Rectus femoris, Vastus medialis, and Vastus lateralis muscles from origin to insertion.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients are no strangers to the emergency department (ED) due to the relapsing and progressive nature of the disease and the associated complications. This study aimed to identify patterns of ED visits among patients diagnosed with MS, the underlying causes of these visits, and the factors associated with these visits. Methods: This was a single center retrospective cohort study which utilized a non-probability consecutive sampling technique to include all patients diagnosed with MS (471 patients) from March 2016 to October 2021 in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. ED visits were categorized as directly related to MS, indirectly related to MS, or unrelated to MS. Results: One in four people with MS visited the ED at least once with a total of 280 ED visits. Most ED visits were ones directly related to MS 43.6%, closely followed by unrelated to MS 41.1%, and then indirectly-related MS visits 15.4%. The most common presenting symptoms in directly-related MS visits were weakness 56.6% and numbness/tingling 56.6% followed by gait impairment 29.5%. Indirectly related to MS or unrelated to MS ED visits were commonly due to neurological 17.7% and gastrointestinal 17.1% causes. Using disease modifying therapy (DMT) was significantly associated with no ED visits (p < 0.001). The use of high-efficacy DMTs was significantly associated with no ED visits than using moderate efficacy DMT (p < 0.001). The use of B-cell depleting therapy (ocrelizumab and rituximab) was significantly associated with no visits to the ED than using any other DMT (p < 0.001). Evidence of brain atrophy on imaging was significantly associated with patients who presented to the ED ≥3 times (p = 0.006, UOR = 3.92). Conclusion: Due to the nature of the disease, many MS patients find themselves visiting the ED due to MS related and unrelated issues. These patients are not only required to be treated by neurologists but also by multiple disciplines. The use of high-efficacy DMTs and B-cell depleting therapy may reduce the total frequency of ED visits. Special attention should be paid to patients who have evidence of brain atrophy on imaging.
ABSTRACT
Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants is a green and effective route of wastewater treatment. Zinc oxide was initially used for this purpose; however, calcined zinc/chromium layered double hydroxide (ZnCr-LDO) and cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdSQDs)-based nanocomposites proved as superior alternatives. Herein, we report a green sonochemical method for the sol-gel fabrication of novel CdSQDs@ZnCr-LDO/ZnO ternary nanocomposite that exhibited exceptional photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B dye (RhB), in wastewaters, under UV-A-irradiation. The features of the ternary nanocomposite were investigated using various physicochemical techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS, BET, zeta potential, DRS, and PL measurements. The RhB dye % removal was 38.02, 40.2, and 98% using pristine ZnO, ZnCr-LDO and the ternary CdSQDs@ZnCr-LDO/ZnO-based nanomaterials, respectively, reflecting the superior ternary nanocomposite's photocatalytic activity that made it an excellent competitor to commonly reported photocatalysts. Additionally, an investigation was carried out to determine the key reactive species in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB, considering both scavenger's type and concentration. The prevailing mechanism was found to be the reductive photodegradation pathway. Furthermore, several models were utilized to describe the kinetics of photocatalytic performance of the ternary nanocomposite and a typical Z-scheme type-II photocatalytic heterojunction mechanism was inferred.

This study embarked on an exploration into the genetic structure and evolutionary history of the Chrysichthys auratus species, leveraging PCR amplification, phylogenetic trees, and haplotype networks. Specific DNA segments were successfully amplified and visualized through electrophoresis. Newly obtained sequences were Bank into GenBank and given accession numbers (OR730807-OR730808-OR730809). The Neighbor-Joining method provided insights into the evolutionary relationships among taxa, further augmented by bootstrap values and the Tamura 3-parameter method. A comprehensive geographical haplotype network showcased pronounced genetic differentiation, especially between remote populations. Nonetheless, shared haplotypes between proximate regions indicated either ancestral genetic connections or ongoing gene flow. Employing the COI-DNA barcodes, an in-depth understanding of intra- and inter-populational genetic diversity was achieved. The study's findings unravel the intricate genetic landscape and evolutionary dynamics of C. auratus, offering novel perspectives into its demographic history across its vast native habitat.

We present a case involving a male patient in his 30s who was admitted to hospital due to recurrent episodes of hypokalaemia over the past 5 years. His medical history revealed hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and paranoia. He was taking citalopram, ramipril, amlodipine, and pramipexole. Tests indicated normal levels of aldosterone/renin ratio and plasma metanephrines. On reviewing his dietary history, it was noted that he consumed 3 to 3.5 L of cola-flavoured drinks on a daily basis. Normal potassium levels were achieved after a significant reduction in cola-flavoured drinks intake and potassium replacement. Subsequent outpatient clinic follow-up revealed that normal potassium levels were maintained even after the patient ceased taking potassium replacement tablets. Given the rarity of hypokalaemia associated with fizzy drinks, the underlying mechanism for this association remains unclear. In this case report, we attempt to provide a possible explanation for the involved mechanisms.
