ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: Antibiotic residues in livestock farming have been identified as a potential cause of antimicrobial resistance in humans and animals. This study aimed to determine whether antibiotic residues were present in the chicken meat, eggs, feces, and feed collected from all four districts in the Mymensingh division of Bangladesh. Materials and Methods: To detect antibiotic residues in the collected samples, qualitative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were used. A total of 230 samples were analyzed for antibiotic residues of commonly used 11 antibiotics. Out of these, 40 meat and 40 feces samples were collected from broilers and layers, 30 egg samples from ducks and layers, and 120 feed samples from broilers and layers from the study area. Thin-layer chromatography was used to screen the presence of antibiotic residues; TLC-positive samples were then subjected to further HPLC analysis to determine the residue concentrations. Results: Thin-layer chromatography analysis revealed that 23.5% of the tested samples contained residues from six different antibiotic classes (tetracyclines, quinolones, beta-lactams, sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, and macrolides). Thin-layer chromatography analysis showed that 35% and 25% of the meat samples were positive for residues from the broiler and layer, respectively. About 15% and 30% of layer and duck egg samples had positive residues, respectively. Out of 120 feed samples analyzed, about 15.8% had various antibiotic residues. In addition, feces samples from broilers and layers had 50% and 35% antibiotic residues, respectively. A total of 2.5% meat and 3.3% egg samples had antibiotic residues above the maximum residue limit (MRL). Based on the findings of this study, the highest percentage of oxytetracycline, followed by doxycycline and ciprofloxacin, were detected in feed samples, and oxytetracycline was detected in meat and egg samples. Conclusion: This study clearly showed the misuse of antibiotics in the poultry sector in Bangladesh. Although antibiotic residues below the MRL level are suitable for human consumption, they may result in antimicrobial drug resistance to pathogens.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aim: The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, such as Escherichia coli in milk, is a serious public health concern as milk is considered a complete food and an important part of daily human diet worldwide, including in Bangladesh. However, there have been no reports on the molecular characterization and antibiotic resistance profile of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli from milk of healthy cows in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aimed to detect and characterize ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-Ec) in milk samples from healthy cows in smallholder dairy farms in Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, and assess the potential risk of consuming this milk. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 milk samples were collected from apparently healthy cows on smallholder dairy farms. Escherichia coli was isolated from the collected samples using standard methods. The detection of ESBL-Ec was performed phenotypically using cultural methods and genotypically by ESBL genetic determinants using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the ESBL-Ec isolates was performed using the disk diffusion method with 15 common antimicrobials. Results: In this study, out of the 100 samples tested, 70 (70%) were found to be positive for E. coli. Among these, 41 (58.6%) strains were identified as ESBL-producing, both phenotypically and genotypically, with the presence of blaCTX-M, blaTEM, and blaSHV individually or combined (blaCTX-M plus blaTEM plus blaSHV). The antibiogram of these ESBL-positive isolates revealed high resistance against commonly used antibiotics, such as ampicillin, cefotaxime, and gentamicin (100%), azithromycin (88%), oxytetracycline (27%), nalidixic acid, cotrimoxazole/trimethoprim (24%), and streptomycin (22%). In addition, one isolate showed resistance to 4th generation of cephalosporin (cefepime). Most importantly, extensive multidrug resistance was found in many ESBL-Ec isolates. However, the isolates were highly sensitive to drugs such as ceftriaxone (100%) and imipenem (100%). This is the first study to detect ESBL-Ec in raw milk from healthy cows on smallholder dairy farms in Bangladesh. Conclusion: More than 58% of the E. coli isolated from raw milk of healthy cows tested positive for ESBL production and showed resistance to most commonly used antimicrobials which may be alarming for human health. A limitation of our study is that we had a small size of sample collected from one district in Bangladesh. Therefore, a larger sample size covering a wider geographic area, and using multi-locus sequence typing and whole genome sequencing could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of ESBL-Ec in Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

This research examined the characteristics of cold days and spells in Bangladesh using long-term averages (1971-2000) of maximum (Tmax) and minimum temperatures (Tmin) and their standard deviations (SD). Cold days and spells were calculated and their rate of change during the winter months (December-February) of 2000-2021 was quantified. In this research, a cold day was defined as when the daily maximum or minimum temperature is ≤-1.5 the standard deviations of the long-term daily average of maximum or minimum temperature and the daily average air temperature was equal to or below 17 °C. The results showed that the cold days were more in the west-northwestern regions and far less in the southern and southeastern regions. A gradual decrease in cold days and spells was found from the north and northwest towards the south and southeast. The highest number of cold spells (3.05 spells/year) was experienced in the northwest Rajshahi division and the lowest (1.70 spells/year) in the northeast Sylhet division. In general, the number of cold spells was found to be much higher in January than in the other two winter months. In the case of cold spell severity, Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions in the northwest experienced the highest number of extreme cold spells against the highest number of mild cold spells in the Barishal and Chattogram divisions in the south and southeast. While nine (out of twenty-nine) weather stations in the country showed significant trends in cold days in December, it was not significant on the seasonal scale. Adapting the proposed method would be useful in calculating cold days and spells to facilitate regional-focused mitigation and adaptation to minimize cold-related deaths.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to develop a database of historical cold-related mortality in Bangladesh using information obtained from online national newspapers and to analyze such data to understand the spatiotemporal distribution, demographic dynamics, and causes of deaths related to cold temperatures in winter. We prepared a comprehensive database containing information relating to the winter months (December to February) of 2009-2021 for the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh and systematically removed redundant records. We found that 1249 people died in Bangladesh during this period due to cold and cold-related illnesses, with an average of 104.1 deaths per year. The maximum number of cold-related deaths (36.51%) occurred in the Rangpur Division. The numbers were much higher here than in the other divisions because Rangpur has the lowest average monthly air temperature during the winter months and the poorest socioeconomic conditions. The primary peak of cold-related mortality occurred during 21-31 December, when cold fronts from the Himalayas entered Bangladesh through the Rangpur Division in the north. A secondary peak occurred on 11-20 January each year. Our results also showed that most of the cold-related mortality cases occurred when the daily maximum temperature was lower than 21 °C. Demographically, the highest number of deaths was observed in children aged six years and under (50.68%), followed by senior citizens 65 years and above (20.42%). Fewer females died than males, but campfire burns were the primary cause of female deaths. Most mortality in Bangladesh was due to the cold (75.5%), cold-triggered illness (10.65%), and campfire burns (5.8%). The results of this research will assist policymakers in understanding the importance of taking necessary actions that protect vulnerable public health from cold-related hazards in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The study was aimed to estimate the true prevalence of human tuberculosis (TB); identify risk factors and clinical symptoms of TB; and detect rifampicin (RIF) sensitivity in three study areas of Bangladesh. METHODS: The cross-sectional study was conducted in three Bangladesh districts during 2018. Potential risk factors, clinical symptoms, and comorbidities were collected from 684 TB suspects. Sputum specimens were examined by LED microscopy. TB hierarchical true prevalence, risk factors and clinical symptoms were estimated and identified using a Bayesian analysis framework. Rifampicin sensitivity of M. tuberculosis (MTB) was detected by GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay. RESULTS: The median TB true prevalence was 14.2% (3.8; 34.5). Although overall clustering of prevalence was not found, several DOTS centers were identified with high prevalence (22.3% to 43.7%). Risk factors for TB identified (odds ratio) were age (> 25 to 45 years 2.67 (1.09; 6.99), > 45 to 60 years 3.43 (1.38; 9.19) and individuals in families/neighborhoods where a TB patient(s) has (ve) already been present (12.31 (6.79; 22.60)). Fatigue, night sweat, fever and hemoptysis were identified as important clinical symptoms. Seven of the GeneXpert MTB/RIF positive sputum specimens (65) were resistant to rifampicin. CONCLUSIONS: About one in every seven TB suspects was affected with TB. A number of the TB patients carry multi drug resistant MTB. Hierarchical true prevalence estimation allowed identifying DOTS centers with high TB burden. Insights from this study will enable more efficient use of DOTScenters-based TB surveillance to end the TB epidemic in Bangladesh by 2035.

ABSTRACT

Extraordinary self-healing efficiency is rarely observed in mechanically strong hydrogels, which often limits the applications of hydrogels in biomedical engineering. We have presented an approach to utilize a special type of graphene oxide-based crosslinker (GOBC) for the simultaneous improvement of toughness and self-healing properties of conventional hydrogels. The GOBC has been prepared from graphene oxide (GO) by surface oxidation and further introduction of vinyl groups. It has been designed in such a way that the crosslinker is able to form both covalent bonds and noncovalent interactions with the polymer chains of hydrogels. To demonstrate the efficacy of GOBC, it was incorporated in a conventional polyacrylamide (PAM) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel matrix, and the mechanical and self-healing properties of the prepared hydrogels were investigated. In PAM-GOBC hydrogels, it has been observed that the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, Young's modulus, and toughness are significantly improved by the incorporation of GOBC without compromising the self-healing efficiency. The PAM-GOBC hydrogel with a modulus of about 0.446 MPa exhibited about 70% stress healing efficiency after 40 h. Whereas, under the same conditions a PAM hydrogel with commonly used crosslinker N,N'-methylene-bis(acrylamide) of approximately the same modulus demonstrated no self-healing at all. Similar improvement of self-healing properties and toughness in PAA-GOBC hydrogel has also been observed which demonstrated the universality of the crosslinker. This crosslinker-based approach to improve the self-healing properties is expected to offer the possibility of the application of commonly used hydrogels in many different sectors, particularly in developing artificial tissues.

ABSTRACT

Bovine rotavirus (BRV) is considered the leading cause of calf diarrhea worldwide, including Bangladesh. In this study we aimed to identify risk factors for BRV infection and determine the G and P genotypes of BRV strains in diarrheic calves. Fecal samples were collected from 200 diarrheic calves in three districts between January 2014 and October 2015. These samples were screened to detect the presence of BRV using rapid test-strips BIO K 152 (RTSBK). The RTSBK positive samples were further tested by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the silver staining technique to detect rotavirus dsRNA. Risk factors were identified by multivariable logistic regression analysis. The G and P genotypes of BRV were determined by RT-PCR and sequencing. A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on the neighbor-joining method using CLC sequence viewer 8.0. About 23% of the diarrheic calves were BRV positive. The odds of BRV infection were 3.8- (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.0-14.7) and 3.9-times (95% CI:1.1-14.2) higher in Barisal and Madaripur districts, respectively, than Sirrajganj. The risk of BRV infection was 3.1-times (95% CI: 1.5-6.5) higher in calves aged ≤ 5 weeks than those aged >5 weeks. Moreover, the risk of BRV infection was 2.6-times (95% CI:1.1-5.8) higher in crossbred (Holstein Friesian, Shahiwal) than indigenous calves. G6P[11] was the predominant genotype (94.4%), followed by G10P[11] (5.6%). The BRV G6 strains were found to be closest (98.9-99.9%) to Indian strains, and BRV G10 strains showed 99.9% identities with Indian strain. The VP4 gene of all P[11] strains showed >90% identities to each other and also with Indian strains. The most frequently identified BRV genotype was G6P[11]. About 23% of calf diarrhea cases were associated with BRV. To control disease, high-risk areas and younger crossbred calves should be targeted for surveillance and management. The predominant genotype could be utilized as the future vaccine candidate or vaccines with the dominant genotype should be used to control BRV diarrhea in Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to understand the fluctuating nature of wind speed characteristics on different time scales and to find the long-term annual trends of wind speed at different locations in South Africa. The hourly average mean wind speed values over a period of 20 years are used to achieve the set objective. Wind speed frequency, directional availability of maximum mean wind speed, total energy, annual energy yield and plant capacity factors are determined for seven locations situated both inland and along the coast of South Africa. The highest mean wind speed (6.01 m/s) is obtained in Port Elizabeth and the lowest mean wind speed (3.86 m/s) is obtained in Bloemfontein. Wind speed increased with increasing latitudes at coastal sites (Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth), while the reverse trend was observed at inland locations (Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Pretoria). Noticeable annual changes and relative wind speed values are found at coastal locations compared to inland sites. The energy pattern factor, also known as the cube factor, varied between a minimum of 1.489 in Pretoria and a maximum of 1.858 in Cape Town. Higher energy pattern factor (EPF) values correspond to sites with fair to good wind power potential. Finally, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth are found to be good sites for wind power deployments based on the wind speed and power characteristics presented in this study.

ABSTRACT

Bovine tuberculosis (bTb) is endemic in Bangladesh but the true prevalence has not yet been reported. Our objectives for this study were to determine the true prevalence and identify risk factors for bTb at the animal- and herd-level in Bangladesh. A total of 510 cows were randomly selected during January 2018 to December 2018. Caudal fold (CFT) and comparative cervical tuberculin tests (CCT) were serially interpreted. Animal- and herd-level risk factor data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire. The hierarchical true prevalence of bTb was estimated within a Bayesian framework. The herd- and animal-level risk factors were identified using mixed effects logistic regression. The apparent prevalence of bTb was 20.6% [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 17.3; 24.3] based on CFT. The animal-level true prevalence of bTb was 21.9 (13.0; 32.4). The herd-level true prevalence in different regions varied from 41.9% to 88.8%. The region-level true prevalence was 49.9 (13.8; 91.2). There is a 100% certainty that herds from Bhaluka and Mymensingh Sadar upazilas are not free from bTb. The odds of bTb were 3.9 times (1.2; 12.6) higher in herds having more than four cows than those with ≤ 4 cows. On the other hand, the risk of bTb was 3.3 times higher (1.0; 10.5) in non-grazing cows than grazing cows. Crossbred cows were 2.9 times (1.5; 5.9) more likely to be infected with bTb than indigenous cows. The risk of bTb in animals with cough was 2.3 times (1.2; 4.3) higher than those without cough. Crossbred, non-grazing cows with cough should be targeted for bTb surveillance. Herds of the Mymensingh, Sadar and Bhaluka regions should be emphasized for bTb control programs. Estimation of Bayesian hierarchical true prevalence facilitates identification of areas with higher prevalence and can be used to indicate regions that where true prevalence exceeds a pre-specified critical threshold.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study examined the role of subject-selection reasons and learning environment factors in students' depression and suicidality. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study surveyed 960 students from five different Bangladeshi universities using questions concerning socio-demographics, lifestyles, subject-selection reasons, learning and academic environment, suicidal behaviors, and the Bangla Patient Health Questionnaire. FINDINGS: Approximately half of the participants were depressed (47.7%), and just over a quarter reported past-year suicidality (28.5%). Risk factors for both depression and suicidal behavior included not studying at their desired institute, selecting subjects based on future career prospects (rather than choosing what they want to study), not having a study-friendly and research-friendly environment, and unsupportive teachers. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The findings will help in formulating policies for educational institutions as well as providing benchmark data for further studies.

ABSTRACT

The study of cell elasticity provides new insights into not only cell biology but also disease diagnosis based on cell mechanical state variation. Microfluidic technologies have made noticeable progress in studying cell deformation with capabilities of high throughput and automation. This paper reports the development of a novel microfluidic system to precisely measure the elasticity of cells having large deformation in a constriction channel. It integrated i) a separation unit to isolate rod- or flake-shaped particles that might block the constriction channel to increase the measurement throughput and ii) a pressure feedback system precisely detecting the pressure drop inducing the deformation of each cell. The fluid dynamics of the separation unit was modeled to understand the separation mechanism before the experimental determination of separation efficiency. Afterward, the pressure system was characterized to demonstrate its sensitivity and reproducibility in measuring the subtle pressure drop along a constriction channel. Finally, the microfluidic system was employed to study the stiffness of both K562 and endothelial cells. The cell protrusion and pressure drop were employed to calculate the mechanical properties based on a power-law rheology model describing the viscoelastic behaviors of cells. Both the stiffness and the fluidity of K562 and endothelial cells were consistent with those in previous studies. The system has remarkable application potential in the precise evaluation of cell mechanical properties.

ABSTRACT

Birds are known for their extraordinary agility, maneuverability, flexibility and endurance during their flight, even under some adverse flying conditions. Bird wings have been the most inspirational element, attracting the attention of researchers to reveal the underlying physical mechanism of lift production as well as to apply the results into the artificial flying vehicles. This paper presents a systematic experimental investigation on a passive flow control of a NACA0012 airfoil using real feather flap which is installed on the suction or pressure surface. The focus of the present study is to determine the major role of a real feather flap in the aerodynamic performance of a NACA0012 airfoil at small attack angles (α). The feather flap width w and its installation position x in are varied from 0.27c to 0.8c and from 0.0 to 0.2c, respectively, where x in is measured from the leading edge of the airfoil, and c is the chord length of the airfoil. Detailed particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are conducted to understand the origin of the aerodynamic benefits introduced by the feather flap. The flap mounted on the suction side may have a positive impact only at large α, beyond the stall. On the other hand, when mounted on the pressure side, the feather flap is proved to be beneficial to improve the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil at small α (= -4° to 8°). The lift C L and lift-to-drag ratio C L /C D are enhanced by 186% and 72%, respectively, for w = 0.53c, x in = 0.2c at α = 2°. Time-averaged and instantaneous vorticities, time-averaged streamwise velocity, and lateral velocity around the flapped airfoil weaken, decrease and increase, respectively, compared with those around the plain airfoil, which are attributed to the increased C L and C L /C D .

ABSTRACT

Spatial control of the orientation of block copolymers (BCPs) in thin films offers enormous opportunities for practical nanolithography applications. In this study, we demonstrate the use of a substrate comprised of poly(4-acetoxystyrene) to spatially control interfacial interactions and block copolymer orientation over different length scales. Upon UV irradiation poly(4-acetoxystyrene) undergoes a photo-Fries rearrangement yielding phenolic groups available for further functionalization. The wetting behaviour of PS-b-PMMA deposited on the poly(4-acetoxystyrene) films could be precisely controlled through controlling the UV irradiation dose. After exposure, and a mild post-exposure treatment, the substrate switches from asymmetric, to neutral and then to symmetric wetting. Upon exposure through photomasks, a range of high fidelity micro-patterns consisting of perpendicularly oriented lamellar microdomains were generated. Furthermore, the resolution of chemically patterned poly(4-acetoxystyrene) substrate could be further narrowed to submicrometer scale using electron beam lithography. When the BCP was annealed on an e-beam modified poly(4-acetoxystyrene) surface, the interface between domains of parallel and perpendicular orientation of the BCPs was well defined, especially when compared with the substrates patterned using the photomask.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to know the herd and animal level prevalence of Q fever in domestic ruminants in some selected districts in Bangladesh. Randomly collected 111 bulk milk and 94 sera samples of cattle, sheep, and goats were tested by indirect ELISA (iELISA). DNA extracted from 23 aborted fetal membranes was analyzed by real time (rt) PCR. The positive cut-off value of iELISA in bulk milk and individual animal sera was ≥30% and ≥40%, respectively. The overall herd level prevalence of Q fever in dairy cattle was 15.6%. The prevalence of Q fever in dairy cattle was significantly higher in Sirajganj in comparison to Satkhira District (P < 0.01). The overall seroprevalence of Q fever in domestic ruminants was 5.06%. Although statistically insignificant, the seroprevalence of Q fever was relatively higher in sheep (9.52%) in comparison to goats (3.33%) and cattle (3.57%). Out of 23 aborted fetal membranes, only one sheep placenta was positive in rt PCR. Q fever is present in all of the three important species of domestic ruminants in Bangladesh. It may have some role in sheep abortion as the seroprevalence is relatively higher and also one sheep placenta is rt PCR positive.

ABSTRACT

Rotavirus B (RVB) in the genus Rotavirus of the family Reoviridae is known to be a cause of acute gastroenteritis among children and adults in parts of Asia including China, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. In a 15-month surveillance programme between March 2007 and May 2008, 3,080 stool specimens were collected from children and adults with acute gastroenteritis in an infectious disease hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. In 25 (0.8%) specimens RVB was detected, for the first time in Nepal, by the use of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by confirmation with reverse-transcription PCR and sequencing. The strains detected in this study had very similar electropherotypes, and their VP7 sequences were almost identical and phylogenetically belonged to the Indo-Bangladeshi lineage which was distinct from the Chinese lineage. Thus, this study showed the circulation of RVB strains belonging to the Indo-Bangladeshi lineage in a broader region than previously documented, suggesting that this phylogenetic divide corresponded to the geographic divide created by the Himalayan Mountains. Further studies may be warranted to identify and characterize the RVB strains in northern Vietnam which is adjacent to southern China with a long and less mountainous border.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a procedure for fabricating large-area, size-tunable, metal arrays with a periodically different shape using Nanosphere Lithography (NSL). This technique has attracted considerable interest because of its important applications as diffraction devices, chemical and optical data recording. Their ordered arrays can be used for anti-reflection surfaces, bio-sensors and nanopatterning masks. Two different types of patterns, honeycomb and hexagonal patterns, could be fabricated on various substrates with different procedures. All steps for making different patterns employed a PS (polystyrene) monolayer by spin coating. Honeycomb patterns were fabricated by spin coating a PS monolayer on a glass substrate and depositing a metal followed by removal of the monolayer, whereas the hexagonal pattern was produced by the transfer of a gold deposited monolayer onto a GaN substrate using the same process. These processes allow simple and excellent control of the size and shape of the patterns. All experimental results on structure characterization and determination of the nanoparticle metrics were accomplished by atomic force microscopy and field emission-scanning electronic microscopy.

ABSTRACT

High density arrays of nanostructures over a large area can be formed on a range of substrates, such as glass, GaN, SiO2 deposited silicon wafer, etc. by the self-assembly of PS-b-PMMA block copolymers. The morphology of the polymer surface is strongly dependent on the thickness of the polymer layer. It is necessary to control the size and shape in order to get the desired properties. The deposition of a gold thin film on polymer-patterned glass followed by the removal of the remaining part of the polymer results in patterned gold on glass, which can be used as a transparent conducting electrode, where the conductivity and transparency depends on the thickness of gold and as well as on the connectivity of the gold pattern. Similarly, the polymer pattern can be transferred to an underlying GaN layer in an as grown LED, which increases the photoluminescence intensity making it useful as a photonic crystal.

ABSTRACT

Cylindrical structures in a group are frequently seen on land and in the ocean. Mutual flow interaction between the structures makes the wake very excited or tranquil depending on the spacing between the structures. The excited wake-enhancing forces in some cases cause a catastrophic failure of the structures. This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of Strouhal number (St), time-mean, and fluctuating forces on, and flow structures around, two identical circular cylinders at stagger angle α = 0°-180° and gap-spacing ratio T/D=0.1-5, where T is the gap width between the cylinders, and D is the diameter of a cylinder. While forces were measured using a load cell, St was from spectral analysis of fluctuating pressures measured on the side surfaces of the cylinders. A flow visualization test was conducted to observe flow structures around the cylinders. Based on forces, St, and flow structures, 19 distinct flow categories in the ranges of α and T/D investigated are observed, including one quadristable flow, three kinds of tristable flows, and four kinds of bistable flows. The quadristable, tristable, and bistable flows ensue from instabilities of the gap flow, shear layers, vortices, separation bubbles, and wakes, engendering a strong jump or drop in forces and St of the cylinders. The two cylinders interact with each other in six different mechanisms, namely interaction between boundary layer and cylinder, shear layer or wake and cylinder, shear layer and shear layer, vortex and cylinder, vortex and shear layer, and vortex and vortex. While the interaction between vortex and cylinder results in a very high fluctuating drag, that between vortex and shear layer results in a high fluctuating lift. On the other hand, the interaction between shear layer or wake and cylinder weakens mean and fluctuating forces and flow unsteadiness. A mutual discussion of forces, St, and flow structures is presented in this paper.

ABSTRACT

Di-block copolymer polystyrene-block-polymethyl methacrylate (PS-b-PMMA) was used to make patterns over a large area of as grown LEDs. The polymer patterns on LEDs surface could be transferred to the underlying p-GaN, the topmost layer of as grown LEDs by both reactive ion etching (RIE) and photo-enhanced chemical (PEC) etching. Removal of remaining polymer chains results in patterned LEDs which shows higher light extraction efficiency. In our experiment, much higher intensity for patterned LEDs in both photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) data plot were found. Similar improvements were found in I-V and L-I curves for patterned LEDs.

ABSTRACT

From September 2006- October 2007 hospital-based surveillance was conducted in Haiphong, Vietnam among children less than age 5 years hospitalized for diarrhoea to determine the distribution of G and P types and electropherotypes of rotavirus. Of note, the emergence of G3P[8] was identified and the strain was predominant among rotaviruses detected. More than 90% of G3P[8] electropherotyped strains shared an identical electropherotype, indicating they were of a single origin and their VP7 sequences were similar to those reported from Japan and China. This abrupt emergence of a novel G3 strains underscores the continued need for quality rotavirus surveillance.
