ABSTRACT

Gaming addiction has gradually developed among medical students and has been a contentious topic for nearly a decade. This study is aimed at estimating the prevalence of gaming addiction among medical students at King Saud University and examining the relationship between perceived stress levels and gaming addiction. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 370 students from 2019 to 2020 using a self-reporting questionnaire consisting of two validated test scales: the Gaming Disorder Test and the Perceived Stress Scale. The questionnaire was sent to all students through an email. Descriptive analyses and t-test statistical tests were used in this study. The prevalence rate of gaming addiction was found to be 4.6%, while the prevalence of perceived stress was confirmed at 95.9%. Students with excellent GPAs and high family income were associated (p < 0.001). Younger groups, females, and students with high family incomes showed higher levels of perceived stress than others. According to Pearson's correlation, gaming addiction was not significantly correlated with stress among medical students (p > 0.05). According to chi-square test also, no significant association was found between gaming disorder and perceived stress (χ 2 = 4.412; p = 0.353). In conclusion, gaming addiction among medical students has scored low prevalence, indicating gaming is not a factor contributing to stress among this group. The high level of perceived stress among medical students should draw attention to the provision of regular psychological care.

ABSTRACT

Reports by the National Academy of Medicine and leading public health organizations advocate including occupational information as part of an individual's social context. Given recent National Academy of Medicine recommendations on occupation-related data in the electronic health record, there is a critical need for improved representation. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed an Occupational Data for Health (ODH) model, currently in draft format. This study aimed to validate the ODH model by mapping occupation-related elements from resources representing recommendations, standards, public health reports and surveys, and research measures, along with preliminary evaluation of associated value sets. All 247 occupation-related items across 20 resources mapped to the ODH model. Recommended value sets had high variability across the evaluated resources. This study demonstrates the ODH model's value, the multifaceted nature of occupation information, and the critical need for occupation value sets to support clinical care, population health, and research.

ABSTRACT

Recent recommendations for capturing social and behavioral information in electronic health record (EHR) systems for downstream applications, including research, highlight the need to better represent patient occupation. The objectives of this study were to characterize the content and quality of EHR social history module free-text occupation documentation. After developing categorization schemas, occupation entries with frequencies >5 (n=2,336) and a random sample of those with frequencies ≤5 (n=381) were analyzed. The information contained in the 2,336 entries fell into five groups: occupation (84.7%), occupation details (20.6%), employment status (2.5%), not in labor force (21.6%), and other (2.5%). Quality issues included use of acronyms/abbreviations (9.1%) and misspellings (1.6%). In comparison, quality issues with the 381 entries were: other (29.1%), acronyms/abbreviations (19.0%), and misspellings (9.0%). These findings suggest the need for EHR user training, system enhancements, and content standardization to support use of occupational information for clinical care and research.
