ABSTRACT

This work investigated the facile synthesis of porous scaffold eggshell derived hydroxylapatite (ESHAp) as a composite with ammonium bicarbonate (AMB) for potential biomaterial in tissue engineering application. The phase purity, composition, size, functional groups and morphology of the apatite were elucidated using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HTEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that hydroxylapatite (HAp) nanoparticles have round morphologies with average diameters between 20 nm and 80 nm, FT-IR analysis confirmed significant hydroxylapatite functional groups like carbonate, phosphate, and hydroxyl groups, while XRD analysis revealed a well crystalline monophasic HAp powder. The scaffold samples containing 10, 20, 25 and 30 % of AMB withstood a compressive stress up to 5, 20, 30 and 42 N/mm2 respectively which indicates that the compressive stress increased with the AMB content introduced as the pore forming agent. MTT assay performed using MG63 osteosarcoma cell lines showed that on comparing the sample of ESTHAp which contained 0 % AMB with other samples in the range of 0.01-1 mM, viability of above 85 % MG63 cells was achieved except for ESTHAp with 40 % AMB, which showed some level of toxicity. The cell adhesion studies of sintered ESTHAp porous scaffold with different weight percent of the pore forming agents using inverted microscopic images of MG 63 cells incubated with ESTHAp samples and treated with heat at 1000 °C appeared to be unstable in the media used with particle leaching observed, and no cells observed near to the samples.

ABSTRACT

Nano round polycrystalline adsorbent (NRPA) of chicken bones origin was utilize as effective adsorbent in Congo red dye removal via aqueous media. The NRPA adsorbent was prepared via thermal decomposition and its structure was investigated with the aids of Transmission Electron Microscopy, Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD). A monophasic apatite phase was confirmed from XRD investigation, while functional groups analysis showed that NRPA possessed CO32-, PO43- and OH- absorption bands. The maximum adsorption capacities derived from Langmuir isotherm is 98.216 mg g-1. From the combined values of n from Freundlich and separation factor (RL) of Langmuir models, the adsorption of CR by NRPA is favourable. Thermodynamic values of 5.280 kJ mol-1 and 16.403 kJ mol-1 K-1 were found for ΔH° and ΔS° respectively. The entire values of ΔG° which ranges from - 35.248 to - 459.68 kJ mol-1 were all negative at different temperatures. Thus, nano polycrystalline adsorbent of chicken bone origin can serve as excellent adsorbent in Congo red dye removal from waste water.

ABSTRACT

Food safety has become a serious global concern because of the accumulation of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in crops cultivated on contaminated agricultural soils. Amongst these toxic elements, arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) receive worldwide attention because of their ability to cause deleterious health effects. Thus, an assessment of these toxic metals in the soils, irrigation waters, and the most widely consumed vegetables in Nigeria; Spinach (Amaranthushybridus), and Cabbage (Brassica oleracea) was evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The mean concentration (measured in mg kg-1) of the PTMs in the soils was in the sequence Cr (81.77) > Pb(19.91) > As(13.23) > Cd(3.25), exceeding the WHO recommended values in all cases. This contamination was corroborated by the pollution evaluation indices. The concentrations (measured in mg l-1) of the PTMs in the irrigation water followed a similar pattern i.e. Cr(1.87) > Pb(1.65) > As(0.85) > Cd(0.20). All the PTMs being studied, were found in the vegetables with Cr (5.37 and 5.88) having the highest concentration, followed by Pb (3.57 and 4.33), and As (1.09 and 1.67), while Cd (0.48 and 1.04) had the lowest concentration (all measured in mg kg-1) for cabbage and spinach, respectively. The concentration of the toxic metals was higher in spinach than in cabbage, which may be due to the redistribution of the greater proportion of the metals above the ground tissue, caused by the bioavailability of metals in the aqueous phase. Expectedly, the hazard index (HI),and carcinogenic risk values of spinach were higher than that of cabbage. This implies that spinach poses potentially higher health risks. Similarly, the Monte Carlo simulation results reveal that the 5th percentile, 95th percentile, and 50th percentile of the cumulative probability of cancer risks due to the consumption of these vegetables exceeds the acceptable range of 1.00E-6 and 1.00E-4. Thus, the probable risk of a cancerous effect is high, and necessary remedial actions are recommended.

ABSTRACT

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common metabolic disorder affecting more than 400 million individuals worldwide. Being an X-linked disorder, the disease is more common among males than females. Various Arab countries estimated the prevalence of G6PD deficiency; however, findings from different countries have not been synthesized collectively. Hence, a systematic review was undertaken to synthesize the findings on the epidemiology of G6PD deficiency in all Arab countries. We performed an electronic systematic literature search based on the eligibility criteria using databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, and CINHAL. The studies included in the review were primary and original research studies assessing the prevalence or incidence, risk factors, or determinants of G6PD deficiency, and published in the English language in a peer-reviewed scientific journal between 2000 and 2022. The systematic review was carried out with the help of an updated PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) checklist. After the screening, 23 full texts were finalized for data extraction. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency ranged from 2 to 31% with a greater burden among high-risk populations like neonates with sickle cell anemia. The determinants included males, family history, consanguineous marriages, and geographic regions, which were all risk factors, except for body weight, which was a protective factor. The prevalence of G6PD deficiency varies across Arab countries, with a higher prevalence in males than females. Different regions of Arab countries need to revisit their screening and diagnostic guidelines to detect G6PD deficiency promptly and prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality among their communities.
