ABSTRACT

The present study aims to assess the ecological risk of chromium [Cr(VI)] in the water and soil of Central Punjab and its natural bioremediation through physids. Members of the genus Physa are cosmopolitan as they are resistant to various pollutants. The snails of the genus Physa were sampled from October through March. Three species, i.e., P. acuta, P. fontinalis, and P. gyrina, were identified. The foot, shell, water, and soil samples were tested for the presence of the hexavalent chromium, using ICP-MS. The maximum mean concentration of chromium in soil was found in GB(R8), i.e., 2.66 ppb. The maximum mean concentration of chromium in water was found in RB(R4), 1.627 ppb. The highest maximum average daily dose (ADD) was found in RB:R6, with a hazard quotient (HQ) of 32.32 and a carcinogenic risk (CR) of approximately 20 in every 100 children as a result of water pollution which is quite similar to RB:R5 showing these are extremely polluted area due to chromium. The pollution level of chromium in soil of Faisalabad is less than zero and safe while water is unsuitable for drinking as the value of water quality index (WQI) is higher than 100. No significant difference among the three species was found regarding bioaccumulation of chromium, in the snail shell and body. Physids play an active role in the bioremediation of soil and water yet may become cancer-causing tablets in the food chains of the region.

ABSTRACT

Hydatigera taeniaeformis formerly referred to as Taenia taeniaeformis is a cestode of cats (definitive hosts) and rodents (intermediate hosts). The prevalence of the metacestode larval stage has been reported in rodents in many parts of the world even though the genetic polymorphisms or intraspecies variation is still understudied. Here, we report a prevalence of 22.09% (38/172) from an urban rodent population in Pakistan and a nucleotide diversity (cox1) of 0.00463 among the population. Infection was higher in male (27.85%) and adult (32.29%) rats than female and sub-adult/young rats. Interestingly, The median-joining network and phylogenetic construction comprising isolates from China, Japan, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Senegal, the United Arab Emirates, and countries in Europe demonstrated that Pakistani H. taeniaeformis are closer to Asian and African population than those of European origin. The results of the study will add-in preliminary data for H. taeniaeformis and will also contribute to understand the global molecular epidemiology and population structure of H. taeniaeformis.

ABSTRACT

Roots, bark, stem/twigs, and leaves of Fraxinus xanthoxyloides are being used regionally for the cure of malaria, jaundice, internal injuries, pneumonia, pain, rheumatism and also in fracture of bones. Our objective was to assess the methanolic leaves extract of F. xanthoxyloides for its antioxidant capability against oxidative stress induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the kidney of Sprague-Dawley rats. Duration of this experiment was 30 days and doses were given on alternative days. Urine of rats was assessed for kidney function and renal tissues for antioxidant enzymes activity, biochemical markers, comet assay and histopathology. Enhanced urinary creatinine, urobilinogen levels and decreased creatinine clearance, protein contents, and albumin levels were observed by CCl4 administration when matched to controls. CCl4 injection also decreased the level of reduced glutathione, catalase, super oxide dismutase, peroxidase, glutathione s-transferase, glutathione reductase, and tissue protein while elevated the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, DNA damages and H2O2 in renal tissues of experimental animals. Co-treatment of FXM and silymarin, lead to the restoration of all the above tested parameters of kidney. Through this study we affirmed the ameliorating role of F. xanthoxyloides in oxidative stress affiliated disorders of kidney.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to explore the presence of antimicrobial bioactive agents in the foot muscle extracts of snails belonging to genus Physa and Ceciloides. Antibacterial activity of foot extracts belonging to species named as P. fontinalis, P. gyrina, P. acuta, C. acicula, C. eulima, C. petitiana, was checked and compared against three bacterial strains i.e. E.coli, P. auroginosa, S. aureus by using disc diffusion method. The results were highly significant with maximum zone of inhibition of 20.10 mm in the P. fontinalis acetone extract and the least was 12.97 mm of C. eulima diethyl ether extract. The microdilution method was employed to observe MIC to evaluate antimicrobial resistance pattern of snails foot muscle extract against three mentioned strains. MIC of foot extracts was ranging from 0.03µ/ml-5 µg/ml for six species. TLC was carried out for profiling of extracts with positive results. Foot extracts from species of both genera eluted in different fractions of compounds with a good resolution in 100% n-hexane and ethyl acetate each. The plates developed in solvent system showed purple and yellow spots indicating the presence proteins and organic compounds showing it a promising canditadate for the therapeutic purposes.
