ABSTRACT

Background: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is considered as the most common bariatric procedure in Saudi Arabia. It is a non-reversible procedure defined as removal of a large portion of the stomach. Objective: The objective of the current study is to compare the appetite and quality of life (QoL) between adults' post-sleeve gastrectomy and obese/morbidly obese adults (pre-SG). Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted in adults (aged between 18 and 65 years), post-sleeve gastrectomy (n = 80, 41 Males and 39 Females) and obese group (n = 60, 28 Males and 32 Females). The study population was recruited from the bariatric surgery clinic of King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz University Hospital. A self-reported questionnaire was collected that included a visual analogue scale (VAS) to assess the appetite level, and SF-36 QoL questionnaire. Results: No significant differences were found in age and gender between the study groups (p > 0.05). The median score feeling of fullness was significantly higher in the SG group (77.5, IQR: 48 and 50, IQR: 40, respectively) than in the obese group (p < 0.001). The amount of food eaten was statistically lower in the SG group (30, IQR: 20) than the obese group (50, IQR: 60) (p = 0.005). Patients post SG had significantly higher QoL scores in all physical and mental scales, physical component summary and mental component summary (p < 0.003). Conclusion: Patients post SG have improved appetite and QoL. Satiety, less prospective food consumption, BMI, age, gender and comorbidities are associated with QoL. Future studies are needed to compare the QoL in post-SG patients with the normative values of the QoL in Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of adolescent obesity in the Middle-East is considered among the highest in the world. Obesity in adolescents is associated with several cardiometabolic abnormalities, the constellation of which is referred to as the metabolic syndrome (MetS). This multi-country cross-sectional study aims to determine the optimal cut-off values for body fat (BF); body mass index (BMI) z-score; waist circumference (WC) percentile, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) for the prediction of MetS among adolescents from Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia (KSA), Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. A secondary objective is to examine the validity of Bioelectrical Impendence Vector Analysis (BIVA) in estimating BF against the deuterium dilution technique (DDL). In each country, a sample of 210 adolescents will be recruited. Data collection will include demographics, socioeconomic, lifestyle and dietary data using a multi-component questionnaire; anthropometric measurements will be obtained and body composition will be assessed using the DDL and BIVA; blood pressure and biochemical assessment will be performed for the identification of the MetS. Receiver operating characteristic analyses will be undertaken to determine optimal cut-off values of BMI, WC, MUAC and BF in identifying those with MetS. Odds ratios (OR) and their respective 95% confidence interval (CI) for the association of the anthropometric measurements with MetS will be computed based on multiple logistic regression analysis models. The Bland and Altman approach will be adopted to compare BIVA against the reference DDL method for the determination of body composition parameters. This study responds to the need for ethnic-specific anthropometric cut-offs for the identification of excess adiposity and associated cardiometabolic risks in the adolescent population. The adoption of the generated cut-offs may assist policy makers, public health professionals and clinical practitioners in providing ethnic-specific preventive and curative strategies tailored to adolescents in the region.

ABSTRACT

Lifestyle behaviors are daily habits influenced by social and environmental factors. This study examined lifestyle behaviors and their associations with sociodemographics, comorbidities, and pain in Saudi university students during the academic year 2021 and 2022. All students received the study invitation via university emails to complete an online questionnaire. The questionnaire included four sections (sociodemographics, health-related information, desired health promotion activities, and a lifestyle behavior assessment) via Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II). The associations between study variables were assessed using Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression. The study questionnaire was completed by 1112 students. No correlation was found between sociodemographics and lifestyle-behavior-related factors except for students in the College of Science who appeared to have good lifestyle behaviors (an increase in HPLP II total scores of 3.69). Students with mental health issues have poorer lifestyle behaviors and spend more time sitting (p < 0.00). Students without disabilities have lower scores in health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, and stress management, while auditory disability specifically lowers health responsibility (p < 0.00). Pain was not associated with any assessed lifestyle behaviors. This study identified several significant correlations and differences between variables such as age, sedentary behavior, sleep duration, disability status, college major, and lifestyle behaviors among PNU students. These findings provide insights into the factors that influence students' health-promoting behaviors and can help guide interventions for promoting healthier lifestyles on campus. Targeted health promotion strategies at an early age could help in decreasing overall noncommunicable disease incidents later in life. The study results should be interpreted taking into consideration that the collected data were cross-sectional and self-reported. In conclusion, the findings of this study clearly demonstrate the need for specific lifestyle and health-promoting programs that are directed toward university students.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Assessing knowledge, self-efficacy, and practice among a given population us-ing a validated and reliable questionnaire is crucial. The aim of this study was to translate, validate, and test the reliability of the knowledge, self-efficacy, and practice in the Arabic population. Methods and Study De-sign: A previously published knowledge, self-efficacy, and practice nutrition questionnaire was translated and validated into Arabic. A panel of translation and nutrition experts from Arab countries participated in translation and testing validity. A convenience sampling technique was used to recruit participants across 22 Arab countries. An online self-administered questionnaire was completed twice with an interval of 2 weeks. Tests of validity (face and content) and reliability (consistency and test-retest reliability) were used. RESULTS: A total of 96 participants had a mean age of 21.5 years, 68.7% were female, and 80.2% were students. The mean expert proportional content validity index scale was 0.95, and intra class correlation values ranged from 0.59 to 0.76; all of these values were highly statistically significant at retest. CONCLUSIONS: The Arabic version of the questionnaire provided valid and reliable results for assessing knowledge, self-efficacy, and practice among Arab adolescents and young adults. This tool could assess nutritional education programs in a community setting and educational institutions targeting this population in Arab countries.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The study sought to assess the influence of nutrition education and intervention programmes on nutrition knowledge and dietary practice among both students and staff (including faculty) of Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN: A pretest-posttest, non-randomised experimental study design was implemented at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh City between September 2019 and February 2020. SETTING: Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University is the largest women's university in the world and has eighteen colleges and institutions and around ninety academic programmes. PARTICIPANTS: The survey was completed by 1824 participants (1350 students and 474 staff/faculty) before the intervention and by a different cohort of 1731 participants (1317 students and 414 staff/faculty) after the intervention. In total, an independent sample of 3555 staff and students participated. Participants were asked about dietary knowledge and practices. Dietary knowledge entailed food variety and nutrients, fast food and its poor nutritional value, and the influence of cooking style on the nutritional quality of food. Dietary practices involved eating breakfast; consuming salt/sugar, eating high-salt food; eating pre-packaged food and consumption of vegetables, fruits, supplements, water and caffeine. RESULTS: The majority of the sample consisted of students (75·1 %) and had not been diagnosed with any disease (73·7 %). The result of the current study showed that nutrition knowledge improved after completion of the nutrition programme. CONCLUSIONS: The nutrition awareness programme improved students' nutritional knowledge; however, there was no significant effect on their dietary practices. Future nutrition awareness programmes should separate activities for students and staff, focusing on one target population at a time.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) often experience low bone mineral density (BMD) pre- and post-lung transplantation (LTX). The study purpose was to describe BMD and micronutrient status in adults with CF pre- and post-LTX. METHODS: Twelve patients with CF (29 ± 8 years) were recruited from the CF clinic at the University of Alberta Lung Transplant Program. BMD and vitamins A, D, E, K status, and parathyroid hormone were measured pre- and post-LTX. RESULTS: No significant differences pre- and post-LTX were observed at the different bone sites measured (lumber-spine, femoral-neck (FN), hip, and femoral-trochlea) (P > 0.05). BMD T-scores (<-2) was present in lumbar-spine, FN, hip, and femoral-trochlea in 33%, 17%, 17%, and 25% of individuals pre-LTX and 58%, 33%, 58%, and 33% of individuals post-LTX, respectively. More than 50% of patients had suboptimal vitamin K levels (PIVKA-II values >3 ng/mL) pre- and post-LTX. CONCLUSION: Adults with CF pre- and post-LTX had reduced BMD and suboptimal vitamin K status.
