ABSTRACT

Resource scarcity and climate change are the most quested topics in view of environmental sustainability. CO2 sequestration through bioelectrochemical systems is an attractive option for fostering bioeconomy development upon several value-added products generation. This review details the state-of-the-art of bioelectrochemical systems for resource recovery from CO2 along with various biocatalysts capable of utilizing CO2. Two bioprocesses (photo-electrosynthesis and chemolithoelectrosynthesis) were discussed projecting their potential for biobased economy development from CO2. Significance of adopting circular strategies for efficient resource recycling, intensifying product value, integrations/interlinking of multiple process chains for the development of circular bioeconomy were discussed. Existing constrains as well as outlook for near establishment of circular bioeconomy from CO2 is presented by weighing fore-sighted plans with current actions. Need for developing CO2-based circular bioeconomy via innovative business models by analyzing social, technical, environmental and product related aspects are also discussed providing a roadmap of gaps to pursue for attaining practicality.

ABSTRACT

Global need for transformation from fossil-based to bio-based economy is constantly emerging for the production of low-carbon/renewable energy/products. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) catalysed by bio-electrochemical process gained significant attention initially for its unique potential to generate energy. Diversification of MFC is an emerging trend in the context of prioritising/enhancing product output while exploring the mechanism specificity of individual processes. Bioelectrochemical treatment system (BET), microbial electrosynthesis system (MES), bioelectrochemical system (BES), electro-fermentation (EF), microbial desalination cell (MDC), microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) and electro-methanogenesis (EM) are the diversified MFC systems that are being researched actively. Owing to its broad diversification, MFC domain is increasing its potential credibility as a platform technology. Microbial catalyzed electrochemical reactions are the key which directly/indirectly are proportionally linked to electrometabolic activity of microorganisms towards final anticipated output. This review intends to holistically document the mechanisms, applications and current trends of MFC diversifications towards multi-faced applications.

ABSTRACT

Internal resistance is one of the limiting factors for power production in microbial fuel cells (MFC). To overcome this, current study designed polyaniline functionalized activated carbon (PANi-FAC) composite as capacitive anode with strategic electrocatalytic capability, and was comparatively assessed with SSM-PANi and bare SSM as anodes in three double chambered MFCs respectively. Power output and COD removal efficiency of PANi-FAC coated on stainless steel mesh (SSM-PANi/FAC) is superior (322 mW/m2; 87.6%) in comparison to SSM-PANi (273 mW/m2; 62.4%) and bare SSM (169 mW/m2; 54%). In addition, maximum specific capacitance of hybrid electrodes is relatively high with SSM-PANi/FAC (360.84 F/g) than SSM-PANi anode (128.26 F/g). Nyquist impedance plots showed less charge-transfer resistance (Rct) with SSM-PANi/FAC (29.9 Ω) than SSM-PANi (206.8 Ω) and SSM anodes (678 Ω). Study infers that, development of electrochemical double layer capacitance makes SSM-PANi/FAC, a potential capacitive anode for augmenting bio-electrocatalytic activity and reducing Ohmic losses.

ABSTRACT

Cities are at crossroads, confronting challenges posed by increasing population growth, climate change and faltering livability. These problems are prompting urban areas to chart novel path towards adopting sustainable production/consumption strategies. The alluring concept of circular economy (CE) that focuses on reuse and recycling of materials in technical and biological cycles to reduce waste generation is a critical intervention. Present article aims on precisely highlighting the importance of biogenic materials which have an immense potential to be transformed into a source of value in an urban ecosystem. It also sets out to explore the scope of implementing 'urban biocycles' that strategically directs the flow of resources, their use, extracting value in the form of nutrients, energy and materials post consumption within an urban metabolic regime. The concepts discussed contribute to biocycle economy by outlining emerging requirements, identification of common strategies, policies and emerging areas of research in line with sustainable development goals.

ABSTRACT

Electron transfer towards biocathode is a rate limiting step for CO2 reduction during microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Current study is designed to offer an understanding on electrotrophy using four different electrode materials viz., carbon cloth (CC), stainless-steel mesh (SS), combination of both (CC-SS) and a hybrid material (CC-SS-AC with activated carbon (AC)) as capacitive biocathodes for MES. Non turn-over and turn-over electrochemical investigations revealed electrode properties in terms of electron transfer, capacitance and redox catalytic currents relatively higher with CC-SS-AC and CC-SS. Acetic acid production was higher in CC-SS-AC (4.31 g/l) than CC-SS (4.21 g/l), CC (3.5 g/l) and SS (2.83 g/l) along with noticeable ethanol production with all the biocathodes except SS. Interestingly, long-term operation of all biocathodes witnessed reduction in resistance visualized through Nyquist impedance spectra relatively efficient with CC-SS-AC. Biocompatible property of CC-SS-AC with increased surface area was presumed to be a critical factor for enhancing electrotrophy linked with capacitive nature of biocathode towards enhanced bioelectrochemical CO2 reduction.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, three bio-electrochemical treatment systems (BET) were designed with variations in cathode electrode placement [air exposed (BET1), partially submerged (BET2) and fully submerged (BET3)] to evaluate azo-dye based wastewater treatment at three dye loading concentrations (50, 250 and 500 mg L-1). Highest dye decolorization (94.5 ±â€¯0.4%) and COD removal (62.2 ±â€¯0.8%) efficiencies were observed in BET3 (fully submerged electrodes) followed by BET1 and BET2, while bioelectrogenic activity was highest in BET1 followed by BET2 and BET3. It was observed that competition among electron acceptors (electrode, dye molecules and intermediates) critically regulated the fate of bio-electrogenesis to be higher in BET1 and dye removal higher in BET3. Maximum half-cell potentials in BET3 depict higher electron acceptance by electrodes utilized for dye degradation. Study infers that spatial positioning of electrodes in BET3 is more suitable towards dye remediation, which can be considered for scaling-up/designing a treatment plant for large-scale industrial applications.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the changes in microbial diversity in response to different electrode materials viz., stainless steel mesh (SS) and graphite plate as anodes in two microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) each poised at 0.2V, 0.4V, 0.6V and 0.8V. Changes in microbiota prior to and after pretreatment along with microbiota enriched in response to various poised potentials with SS and graphite are monitored by 16S rRNA gene based DGGE profiling. Significant shifts in microbial community were noticed at all these experimental conditions. Correspondingly, the level of hydrogenase belonging to genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Rhodopseudomonas and Clostridium was studied by quantitative real time PCR (RT-PCR) at various applied potentials. DGGE based 16S rRNA gene profiling revealed enriched members belonging to phylum Firmicutes predominantly present at 0.8V in both MECs contributing to high hydrogen production. This study first time explored the growth behavior of mixed consortia in response to poised potentials and electrode materials.

ABSTRACT

Variation in anoxic microenvironment (multi-phase (MP) metabolic shift strategy) during cycle operation of periodic discontinuous batch/sequencing batch (PDBR/SBR) mode operation showed enhanced degradation of recalcitrant azo dye (C.I. Acid Black 10B) at higher dye load (1250mg/l). The process performance was evaluated by varying anoxic phasing period during cycle operation. Before multiphase (BMP) operation with 2.1% of anoxic period showed color/COD removal efficiency of 41.9%/46.3%. Increment in anoxic period responded favorable in enhancing treatment efficiency [AMPI (16.2%), 49.4%/52.4%; AMPII (26.6%), 54.7%/57.2%; AMPIII (34.9%), 58.4%/61.5%]. Relatively higher bio-electrochemical activity, persistent reductive behavior (redox catalytic currents, 0.26/-0.72µA), prevalence of redox shuttlers (Fe-S proteins, cytochromes, quinones) facilitating enhanced electron transfer by minimization of associated losses and higher enzyme activities were observed with induction of anoxic phase. Anoxic condition shifts system microenvironment between oxidation and reduction assisting reduction of dye to its intermediates followed by their mineralization.

ABSTRACT

Functional role of biofilm and suspended growth bioreactor configurations in response to the treatment of azo-dye (C.I. Acid Black 10B) bearing wastewater was evaluated in periodic discontinuous batch mode operation at varying dye concentrations. The biofilm system depicted higher dye removal efficiency (93.14%) compared to suspended mode (84.29%) at 350 mg dye/l operation. Both the reactor configurations did not show much process inhibition at higher dye loads studied. Azo reductase and dehydrogenase enzyme activities showed significant variation indicating the different metabolic capabilities of the native-microflora, stable proton shuttling between metabolic intermediates and differences in the delivery of reducing powers from the substrate metabolism towards dye removal. Voltammograms visualized marked variations in electron discharge properties with the function of reactor configuration, time intervals and dye load. Higher redox catalytic currents, lower Tafel slopes and polarization resistance showed good correlation with enzyme activities and dye removal.
