ABSTRACT

Background: Bacteriophages are a promising biotechnological against bacterial pathogens. Currently, phage research is garnering interest in sub-Saharan countries as bacterial resistance to antibiotics becomes widespread. They are sought in all environments as they offer the possibility of a sustainable alternative to antibiotics. Materials and Methods: Altogether 30 water samples from urban sewage and environmental water were screened for the presence of bacteriophages able to infect Escherichia coli and Enterobacter cloacae. Their genomic diversity was determined by random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR fingerprinting. Results: We isolated 35 phages including 9 polyvalent phages that infect simultaneously E. coli and E. cloacae. This study allowed first isolation of E. cloacae-specific phages in Côte d'Ivoire. All phages were distinct based on their RAPD band patterns. Conclusions: Sewage systems of Yopougon and the environmental water of Ebrié lagoon were a rich source of phages. The phage collection could be useful for phage application in Côte d'Ivoire.

ABSTRACT

The lytic Escherichia coli siphophage BRET was isolated from a chicken obtained at a local market in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Its linear genome sequence consists of 59,550 bp (43.4% GC content) and contains 88 predicted genes, including 4 involved in archaeosine biosynthesis. Phage BRET is related (95% nucleotide identity) to Enterobacteria phage JenK1.

ABSTRACT

The lytic Escherichia coli phage Ebrios was isolated from a water sample collected in Ebrie Lagoon on the Adiopodoumé River in Abidjan (Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa). The linear genome of this Podoviridae family member contains 39,752 bp, has a G+C content of 52.9%, is composed of 53 open reading frames, and is related to the Stenotrophomonas maltophilia phage IME15.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to describe de fiber composition in the thigh muscles of grass cutter (Thryonomys swinderianus, Temminck 1827). Ten 4 to 6-month-old (3 to 4 kg) male grasscutter were used in this study. Eleven skeletal muscles of the thigh [M. biceps femoris (BF), M. rectus femoris (RF), M. vastus lateralis (VL), M. vastus medialis (VM), M. tensor fasciae latae (TFL), M. semitendinosus (ST), M. semimembranosus (SM), M. semimembranosus accessorius (SMA), M. Sartorius (SRT), M. pectineus (PCT), M. adductor magnus (AM)] were collected after animals euthanasia and examined by light microscopy. Three muscle fiber types (I, IIB and IIA) were found in these muscles using enzyme histochemical techniques [myosine adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide tetrazolium reductase (NADH-TR)]. Ten of these eleven muscles are composed by 89% to 100% of fast contracting fibers (types IIA and IIB), while the SMA was almost exclusively formed by slow contracting fibers.

ABSTRACT

Immunohistological and histopathological methods were used to highlight the importance of cell damages and some biomarkers for health risk assessment. A comparative study between 3 sites of the lagoons showed that the most polluted areas (Adiake and Ebrah), influenced by human activities, presented more damaged cells and stained cells in gills and livers of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus than the less polluted area (Layo): gill cell hyperplasia and liver cells vacuolation were more evident in fish from Adiake than in fish from Ebrah and Layo. The percentage of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-positive cells in gill were 45.8 % ± 23.7 % for Adiake, 18.2 % ± 4.6 % for Ebrah and 11.4 % ± 6.51 % for Layo; The percentage of PCNA-positive in liver cells were 3.8 % ± 3.6 % for Adiake, 4.9 % ± 4.7 % for Ebrah and 2.6 % ± 2.5 % for Layo. Gills were more affected than livers. The Adiake site was the most contaminated area of the lagoon complex of Cote d'Ivoire.
