ABSTRACT

Sustainability in cotton production is inevitable because producing more cotton means more employment, economic acceleration, and industrial expansion. India, China, the United States, Brazil, and Pakistan contribute 74% of worldwide cotton production. Pakistan is contributing only 5%, despite the high potential of cotton. The average yield of cotton in Pakistan is stagnant at 570.99 kg hm-2, whereas it entails the highest cost of production among all other crops. The yield obtained in Pakistan is less than the potential, profitability is drastically lessening, and farmers are abandoning cotton for alternative kharif crops. Some traditional quantitative studies have unveiled different factors that affect cotton production. However, an in-depth qualitative study has never been conducted in Pakistan to explore the root causes of growing cotton crop failure. Following Moustakas's traditional phenomenological guidelines, this phenomenological study was conducted in the district of Rahim Yar Khan in the core cotton zone of Punjab province. A total of 10 interviews were conducted with purposively selected cotton growers based on a criterion: (i) having more than 10 years of cotton growing experience, (ii) being a cotton grower, and (iii) having at least 10 years of formal schooling. Interviews were conducted face to face on an interview guide. One interview lasted 45-50 min, and responses were recorded and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. A total of 6 themes emerged from the collected data, including (i) climate change, (ii) varietal problems, (iii) pesticide usage, (iv) sense of institutional services, (v) attitude of farmers and (vi) soil health and environment. These six merging themes contributed to cotton crop failure and yield decline. The deep exploration further summarized that researchers, extensionists, and farmers need to seriously consider variety, sowing time, and the environment to revive cotton crops. The detailed recommendations and policy guidelines are presented in this paper, highlighting the cotton sector's research, development and investment areas.

ABSTRACT

We studied the biodegradation of oily sludge generated by a petroleum plant in Bahrain by a bacterial consortium (termed as AK6) under different bioprocess conditions. Biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in oily sludge (C11-C29) increased from 24% after two days to 99% after 9 days of incubation in cultures containing 5% (w/v) of oily sludge at 40°C. When the nitrogen source was excluded from the batch cultures, hydrocarbon biodegradation dropped to 45% within 7 days. The hydrocarbon biodegradation decreased also by increasing the salinity to 3% and the temperature above 40°C. AK6 tolerated up to 50% (w/v) oily sludge and degraded 60% of the dichloromethane-extractable oil fraction. Illumina-MiSeq analyses revealed that the AK6 consortium was mainly composed of Gammaproteobacteria (ca. 98% of total sequences), with most sequences belonging to Klebsiella (77.6% of total sequences), Enterobacter (16.7%) and Salmonella (5%). Prominent shifts in the bacterial composition of the consortium were observed when the temperature and initial sludge concentration increased, and the nitrogen source was excluded, favoring sequences belonging to Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas. The AK6 consortium is endowed with a strong oily sludge tolerance and biodegradation capability under different bioprocess conditions, where Pseudomonas spp. appear to be crucial for hydrocarbon biodegradation.

ABSTRACT

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a polyphagous insect pest is a major threat to a wide range of crops worldwide. Aiming to evaluate the life history traits of M. persicae, feeding on different host plants, we used five vegetables: cabbage, Brassica oleracea (Brassicaceae); chinese cabbage, B. rapa (Brassicaceae); chili pepper, Capsicum annum (Solanaceae); crown daisy, Chrysanthemum coronarium (Asteraceae); and eggplant, Solanum melongena (Solanaceae). TWOSEX-MSchart software was used for the statistical analysis about the age-stage, two-sex life table theory. The highest fecundity (69.65 individuals) rate of M. persicae, intrinsic rate of increase (r = 0.425 d-1), finite rate of increase (λ = 1.531 d-1), net reproductive rate (R0 = 69.65 offspring), and shortest mean generation time (T = 9.964 d) were recorded on the chili pepper plant. Whereas, lower fitness occurred on cabbage. The findings attained from population growth parameters indicate that chili pepper is the most susceptible plant, while cabbage is resistant to aphids. Population projection results also supported this statement, as the final total population size on cabbage was significantly lower than other plants. The reported information would be useful for devising integrated pest management programs, particularly those involving M. persicae. This information also suggests the adaptability of M. persicae causing economic damage to these vegetable cultivars.

ABSTRACT

Introduction Laparoscopic colonic resection is increasingly becoming popular worldwide and aims to provide curative resection in addition to the inherent benefits of laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in a Pakistani cohort of patients. Methods and procedures We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of all patients who presented to our hospital with the diagnosis of right-sided colon carcinoma from January 2010 to December 2018 and underwent laparoscopic right or extended right hemicolectomy. Demographics, operative findings, histopathology report, and follow-up of patients were recorded and the analysis was performed on Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 20 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY). Results Seventy-five patients were included, 56 (74.7%) of whom were males and 19 (25.3%) were females. The median age was 52 years (range 25-82 years). The median hospital stay was five days (Range 3-13 days). The median blood loss was 70 milliliters and the mean operative time was 195.5±77.6 minutes. Laparoscopic extended right hemicolectomy was performed in 23 (16.67%) patients and standard right hemicolectomy in 52 (83.33%) patients. Most (72%) of the patients had a pathological T3 tumor, and the majority (61.3%) of the patients had no nodal involvement (pN0). The mean number of lymph nodes removed was 20+8. The median numbers of involved lymph nodes were 1.14+2.19. All the patients had R0 resection. Postoperatively, two patients had pelvic collection, and there was no 30-day mortality. Local recurrence occurred in four patients and distant metastases were observed in nine patients. The median follow-up in our study was 40.5±18.35 months. The median disease-free survival was 42±2.17 months and the median overall survival was 44±2.16 months. Conclusion Our experience with laparoscopic right colon resections has confirmed the safety and feasibility of the procedure.

ABSTRACT

Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni a non-caloric, safe and natural sweetener has been shown pharmaceutically important in the management of blood disorders. This study was designed to investigate hematology and safety of stevia aqueous extract through animal modeling. For this purpose, fifty albino rats were categorized into 5 groups and all the groups were received aqueous stevia extract at different dosage levels (200, 300, 400 and 500 ppm/kg b. wt) for 8 weeks except control group. Hematological and toxicological analyses were conducted using standard recommended procedures. The results indicated that biochemical parameters (RBC, HB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, WBC, eosinophils, lymphocytes and neutrophils) of albino rats significantly (P<0.05) increased and PLT, MPV and monocytes levels non-significantly decreased by using aqueous extract of stevia at different levels after eight weeks of study. Furthermore, Stevia aqueous extracts had non-toxic effect on liver functioning tests. However, stevia aqueous extracts were insignificant in their impression regarding organ to body weight ratios. The stevia aqueous extract has positive effect on hematological parameters of albino rats and is toxicologically safe. Therefore it could be used as a natural remedy for the management of hematological disorders without any health hazards.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We looked at risk factors and patterns of recurrence following surgical treatment of Gastro-Oesophageal Junction carcinoma (GOJC). METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients with GOJC undergoing resection with curative intent between Jan 2009 and June 2017 at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital were reviewed. GOJ cancer was classified as per Siewert classification. Clinical and operative details were studied and data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: During the study period, we identified 78 patients with GOJ adenocarcinoma (38 patients with GOJ Type-I, 16 with Type-II tumors and 24 patients with GOJ Type-III tumors). Median age was 56 years ± 1.1. Male to female distribution was 72 versus 28%. Carbo-Pacli /5-FU based XRT verses Magic protocol (p<0.015) and advanced pathological T.-stage (p-value<0.032) were found to be statistically significant risk factors for recurrence. After a median follow up of 17.8 months+/- 1.5, 20 patients developed recurrence of which five had local recurrence, three had regional recurrence, eight had distant metastases and four had both local and distant metastases. CONCLUSION: The incidence of recurrence following curative resection of GOJC is 25%. Type of neoadjuvant treatment, waiting time for surgery and advanced T-stage are a risk factor for recurrence.
