ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide a histological description of different regions of the gastric and duodenal mucosa in Rhesus monkey, as well as to analyze the distribution and the relative frequency of 5-HT. The cardia region mucosa consists of simple columnar epithelium PAS + and AB + and the 5-HT cells were observed at the base of the gland (QA [5-HT cells]/mm²) = 8.72 ±â€¯4.98). The body region, has a smaller number of glands. The 5-HT cells were found predominant in the base of the gastric glands. QA= 6.96 ±â€¯3.81. When compared to body region, the stomach fundus has smaller gastric pits. The 5-HT cells are found at the base of the glands near the main cells. QA = 5.29 ±â€¯2.09. The pylorus region was found to have deep pits and well-developed gastric glands. The 5-HT cells are scarce, at the base of the pyloric gland. QA = 1.18 ±â€¯1.36. The duodenum presented goblet cells strong PAS + and AB +. 5-HT cells were found both in the lining epithelium and in the intestinal glands. QA = 8.16 ±â€¯2.59.

ABSTRACT

Nonunion fractures occur frequently in humans, with profound implications (medical and non-medical). Although there are numerous animal models to study pathogenesis and treatment of nonunion fractures, there is apparently the lack of a definitive model for atrophic nonunion fracture. Therefore, the objective was to develop a low-cost rat model of nonunion fracture with a vascular deficit that enabled standardized quantitative analysis of bone growth and regeneration. The model was developed with two surgeries, performed apart. The first involved osteotomy of the femur diaphysis, removal of periosteum and endosteum, isolation of the fracture site using a latex artefact (Penrose drain tube), and reduction of the fracture using an intramedullary pin, whereas the second surgery was to remove the latex artefact. Based on radiographic imaging, micro-CT and histological analyses done 125 days after the fracture was induced, there was clear evidence of atrophic nonunion fracture, without pin migration or specimen loss. Perceived advantages of this model included low cost, ease of reproducibility, lack of specimen loss, and, finally, the potential to assess bone growth and regeneration under poor vascular conditions.

ABSTRACT

A careful analysis of geometry and source positioning influence in the activity measurement outcome of a nuclear medicine dose calibrator is presented for (99m)Tc. The implementation of a quasi-point source apparent activity curve measurement is proposed for an accurate correction of the activity inside several syringes, and compared with a theoretical geometric efficiency model. Additionally, new geometrical parameters are proposed to test and verify the correct positioning of the syringes as part of acceptance testing and quality control procedures.

ABSTRACT

A new method for measuring simultaneously both the extrinsic sensitivity and spatial resolution of a gamma-camera in a single planar acquisition was implemented. A dual-purpose phantom (SR phantom; sensitivity/resolution) was developed, tested and the results compared with other conventional methods used for separate determination of these two important image quality parameters. The SR phantom yielded reproducible and accurate results, allowing an immediate visual inspection of the spatial resolution as well as the quantitative determination of the contrast for six different spatial frequencies. It also proved to be useful in the estimation of the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the image formation collimator/detector system at six different frequencies and can be used to estimate the spatial resolution as function of the direction relative to the digital matrix of the detector.

ABSTRACT

The authors aim to report the chest CT findings of a patient with disseminated cysticercosis, emphasising the pulmonary and cardiac features. The main finding consisted of multiple pulmonary, cardiac and chest wall nodules. The present case demonstrates that cysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of multiple pulmonary nodules, mainly in those patients with similar lesions in the cardiac muscle and/or in the chest wall.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The extracellular matrix is a key element in penile function and pathology, yet little is known of its development. Herein we investigated the morphological organization of collagen and elastin in the corpora cavernosa and tunica albuginea of human fetuses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The penises from 5 fresh human fetuses at 28 weeks postconception (WPC) were routinely fixed and embedded, and all staining procedures were carried out on paraffin sections. Collagen was evidenced by staining with: (1) Gomori's trichrome; (2) sirius red, followed by observation under polarized light, and (3) an antihuman collagen type-III antibody. Elastin and the whole elastic system were revealed using an antihuman elastin antibody and Weigert's resorcin fucsin, respectively. RESULTS: At this stage of fetal development, the albuginea is formed predominantly by dense bundles of collagen. Near the corpora cavernosa, the presence of type-III collagen was also observed. Weigert staining showed numerous fibers of the elastic system in the albuginea. Type-III collagen was found to be strongly positive in the cavernous trabeculae and in the connective sheath surrounding the central artery. Using Weigert staining and an immunolabeling method with primary antibody against human elastin, we found an important quantity of elastic system fibers in the trabeculae of the corpora cavernosa. CONCLUSION: In fetuses at 28 WPC the albuginea is formed predominantly by dense bundles of collagen. The trabecular structures of the corpora cavernosa present a significant quantity of type-III collagen and elastic system fibers.

ABSTRACT

Since an objective noninvasive method for measuring inflammation in arthritis is lacking, radioimaging experiments were conducted with 111indium-chloride (111InCl3) in the collagen model. A computer imaging index, reflecting uptake in the feet and ankles, was significantly greater in 16 rats immunized with collagen than in 6 nonimmunized rats (mean +/- SEM 1.18 +/- 0.04 vs 0.39 +/- 0.02, for the 2 groups, respectively, p less than 0.001). Additional analyses provided evidence that the 111InCl3 technique can be used to measure objectively progression of the arthritic response of rats of immunization with collagen, and pilot comparisons with conventional bone scintigraphy in 2 patients with rheumatoid arthritis suggested that the method is applicable to human arthritic disease.
