ABSTRACT

While there is a considerable body of literature on sexual aggression, we know much less about the violation of sexual boundaries within professional relationships. To address this knowledge gap, the characteristics of cases of sexual misconduct in the province of Quebec were extracted, based on a search of published disciplinary decisions between 1998 and 2020, using the legal databases CANLII and SOQUIJ. The search yielded 296 decisions including 249 male and 47 female members from 22 professional orders, and involving 470 victims. Results indicate that male professionals approaching mid-career accounted for a greater proportion of cases of sexual misconduct. Moreover, physical and mental health professionals were overrepresented in cases, as were female adult victims. Acts of sexual misconduct concerned mostly sexual touching and intercourse and occurred during consultations. Female professionals were more inclined to establish romantic and sexual relationships with clients than their male counterparts. Of the 92.0% of professionals found guilty of at least one count of sexual misconduct, two thirds eventually returned to practice. Following the guilty verdict, few faced rehabilitative measures. Recommendations are provided for the prevention of sexual recidivism and the accompaniment of victims of sexual misconduct throughout the disciplinary process.

ABSTRACT

The trade-off between energy density and power capabilities is a challenge for Li-ion battery design as it highly depends on the complex porous structures that holds the liquid electrolyte. Specifically, mass-transport limitations lead to large concentration gradients in the solution-phase and subsequently to crippling overpotentials. The direct study of these solution-phase concentration profiles in Li-ion battery positive electrodes has been elusive, in part because they are shielded by an opaque and paramagnetic matrix. Herein we present a new methodology employing synchrotron hard X-ray fluorescence to observe the concentration gradient formation within Li-ion battery electrodes in operando. This methodology is substantiated with data collected on a model LiFePO4/Li cell using a 1 M LiAsF6 in 1:1 ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (EC/DMC) electrolyte under galvanostatic and intermittent charge profiles. As such, the technique holds great promise for optimization of new composite electrodes and for numerical model validation.

ABSTRACT

Controlled payload release is one of the key elements in the creation of a reliable drug delivery system. We report the discovery of a drug delivery vessel able to transport chemotherapeutic agents to target cancer cells and selectively trigger their release using the electrochemical activity of a ferrocene-modified phospholipid. Supported by in vitro assays, the competitive advantages of this discovery are (i) the simple one step scalability of the synthetic process, (ii) the stable encapsulation of toxic drugs (doxorubicin) during transport, and (iii) the selective redox triggering of the liposomes to harness their cytotoxic payload at the cancer site. Specifically, the redox-modified giant unilamellar vesicle and liposomes were characterized using advanced methods such as scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and fluorescent imaging.

ABSTRACT

Cancer cell multidrug resistance is a molecular signature that highly influences the outcome of chemotherapy treatment and for which there is currently no robust method to monitor in vitro its activity. Herein, we demonstrate that ferrocenemethanol (FcCH(2)OH) and its oxidized form ([FcCH(2)OH](+)) affect the redox state of cancer cells. Specifically, the interaction of FcCH(2)OH with the glutathione couple (GSH/GSSG) is shown in human adenocarcinoma cervical cancer cells HeLa and a multidrug resistant variant overexpressing the multidrug resistant associated protein 1 (MRP1) using bioanalytical techniques, such as flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. It is further demonstrated that the differential response to FcCH(2)OH in multidrug-resistant cells is in part due to MRP1's unspecific efflux. Scanning electrochemical microscopy confirmed the interaction between FcCH(2)OH and the cells, and the differential response was observed to depend on MRP1 expression. This newly established relation between FcCH(2)OH/[FcCH(2)OH](+), GSH/GSSG and multidrug resistance in human cancer cells enables than the acquisition of scanning electrochemical microscopy images.

ABSTRACT

Plastic substrates made of polystyrene (PS) and Zeonor 1060R were treated with oxygen plasma to introduce polar groups (e.g., carbonyl and carboxylic acid) at the surface that render these materials hydrophilic and promote patterned adhesion of HeLa cells. Resultant surfaces were characterized using contact angle goniometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to monitor changes in wettability, nanoscale topography, and chemical composition. Biocompatibility of the plastic surfaces was verified through fluorescence microscopy using three fluorophores, Alexa Fluor 488 conjugated to Annexin V, Hoechst 33258, and propidium iodide, indicating cells that undergo apoptosis and necrosis, respectively. The best cell growth was observed on PS treated at 5 W/sccm, for which the viability of adhering HeLa cells exceeded 90%. Patterning was accomplished using an elastomeric microcapillary system (microCS) made of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) that consisted of a set of parallel channels to align cells in linear fashion. Densely populated bands were obtained on substrates of both plastic materials when the culture medium contained >2 x 10(5) cells/mL.

ABSTRACT

Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS; N=14) and a comparison group of siblings (N=8) underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to examine the relationship between cognitive functioning and psychopathology. Significant group differences were obtained on tests of full scale and verbal intellectual functioning and perceptual-motor skills. With the exception of performance on tests of attention and executive functioning, children with VCFS displayed a profile consistent with nonverbal learning disability (NLD). However, within group comparisons revealed significantly poorer visuospatial intellectual and nonverbal memory functioning in sibling controls as well. No significant group differences were obtained on tests of motor speed, academic, language, attention, memory, or executive functioning, with significant variability in children with VCFS frequently accounting for the lack of robust differences. Parent-report measures revealed profiles consistent with ADHD. No clinically significant symptoms of psychosis, depression or anxiety were noted on either self- or parent-report measures. Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performance was found to be highly and negatively correlated with the Thought Problems subscale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for VCFS children only, suggesting a possible at-risk indicator for later onset psychopathology.

ABSTRACT

This study examined memory functioning in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (DS; velocardiofacial syndrome). An overall verbal better than nonverbal memory pattern was evident on the Test of Memory and Learning (TOMAL), with children with 22q11.2 DS performing significantly below their siblings and children with low average IQ but similar to children with autism on facial memory. Children with 22q11 DS also performed significantly below their siblings on tests of verbal working memory. Children with autism performed significantly poorer than the siblings of children with 22q11.2 DS only on their recall of stories. Delayed recall was significantly poorer in children with 22q11.2 DS and children with autism, compared to sibling controls. Although there were no significant group differences on tests of multiple trial verbal or visual learning, a relative weakness was noted with multiple trial visual learning in children with 22q11.2 DS and their siblings, suggesting that an alternative or interactive factor other than the deletion may account for the relatively better verbal compared to nonverbal memory abilities. Deficits in facial memory in children with both 22q11.2 DS and autism suggest disruptions in ventral temporal pathways such as between fusiform gyrus and parahippocampal/hippocampal regions whereas deficits in verbal working memory in children with 22q11.2 DS implicates dorsolateral prefrontal regions, both intimating aberrant white matter pathways.

ABSTRACT

Hamartoses (HM) are defined as disorders involving nonneoplastic tissue overgrowth. Studies have examined the neuropsychological profiles of children with common HM, such as neurofibromatosis type 1. Limited information is known regarding neuropsychological profiles of rare HM such as Osteochondromatosis Syndrome (OS) and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS). The current investigation is, to our knowledge, the first attempt to define the cognitive phenotypes in two boys with OS and KTS. Results revealed significantly greater impairments involving sensorimotor and visuospatial skills, while verbal memory and language skills appeared relatively preserved. Significant neurobehavioral problems and marked social difficulties were evident. These findings suggest that these syndromes are on a Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) continuum, with varying degrees of severity.
