ABSTRACT

A novel strategy allowing temporal control of dynamic bond exchange in covalently crosslinked polymer networks via latent transesterification catalysts is introduced. Obtained by a straightforward air- and water-tolerant synthesis, the latent catalyst is designed for an irreversible temperature-mediated release of a strong organic base. Its long-term inactivity at temperatures below 50 °C provides the unique opportunity to equip dynamic covalent networks with creep resistance and high bond-exchange rates, once activated. The presented thermally latent base catalyst is conveniently introducible in readily available building blocks and, as proof of concept, applied in a radically polymerized thiol-ene network. Light-mediated curing is used for 3D-printing functional objects, on which the possibility of spatially controlled reshaping and welding based on dynamic transesterification is illustrated. Since the catalyst is thermally activated, limitations regarding sample geometry and optical transparency do not apply, which facilitates a transfer to well-established industrial technologies. Consequently, fiber-reinforced and highly filled magneto-active thiol-ene polymer composites are fabricated by a thermal curing approach. The on-demand activation of dynamic transesterification is demonstrated by (magneto-assisted) reshaping experiments, highlighting a wide range of potential future applications offered by the presented concept.

ABSTRACT

Material as well as process variations in the composites industry are reasons to develop methods for in-line monitoring, which would increase reproducibility of the manufacturing process and the final composite products. Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) have shown to be useful for monitoring liquid-composite molding processes, e.g., in terms of online gel point detection. Existing works however, focus on in-plane strain measurements while out-of-plane residual strain prevails. In order to measure out-of-plane strain, FBG inscribed in highly birefringent fiber (HB FBG) can be used. The purpose of this research is the cure stage detection with (a) FBG inscribed in single mode and (b) FBG inscribed in highly-birefringent side-hole fiber in comparison to the reference gel point detected with an in-mold DC sensor. Results reveal that the curing process is better traceable with HB FBG than with regular FBG. Thus, the use of HB FBG can be a good method for the gel point estimation in the RTM process.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the application of a fiber Bragg grating written in a highly birefringent side-hole elliptical core optical fiber for two-axial strain measurement is presented. Hybrid optical fiber structures achieved by combining large side-holes and elliptical core result in a very high birefringence of 1 × 10-3 and thus high initial Bragg peak spectral separation of 1.16 nm, as well as a very high transverse force sensitivity, of up to 650 pm/(N/mm) or even -1150 pm/(N/mm), depending on the fiber orientation with respect to the applied force. Due to the ~22 %m/m GeO2 concentration in the core the fiber being highly photosensitive, which significantly simplifies FBG fabrication by UV illumination without the need for prior hydrogen loading, which worsens thermal stability. Finally, the developed FBGs written in the highly birefringent side-hole elliptical core optical fiber were embedded in the square composite plates and applied for strain measurements. Tests of two-directional four-point bending have shown usability of such FBG for two-axial in-plane strain measurement with a single FBG in iso-thermal conditions.

ABSTRACT

The immunosuppressant drug tacrolimus (FK-506) failed to show an anti-edematous effect despite suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines in cerebrospinal fluid following focal traumatic brain injury. By questioning the role of the inflammatory response as a pharmacological target, we investigated the effects of FK-506 on immune cell infiltration in brain-injured rats. Following induction of a cortical contusion, male Sprague-Dawley rats received FK-506 or physiological saline intraperitoneally. Brains were removed at 24 h, 72 h or 7 days, respectively. Frozen brain sections (7 microm) were stained immunohistologically for markers of endothelial activation (intercellular adhesion molecule-1--ICAM-1), neutrophil infiltration (His-48), and microglial and macrophage activation (Ox-6; ED-1), respectively. Immunopositive cells were counted microscopically. Contusion volume (CV) was quantified morphometrically 7 days after trauma. Inflammatory response was confined to the ipsilateral cortex and hippocampal formation, predominating in the contusion and pericontusional cortex. Strongest ICAM-1 expression coincided with sustained granulocyte accumulation at 72h which was suppressed by FK-506. Ox-6+ cells prevailing at 72 h were also significantly reduced by FK-506. ED-1+ cells reaching highest intensity at 7 days were significantly attenuated at 72 h. Cortical CV was not influenced. FK-506 significantly decreased post-traumatic local inflammation which, however, was not associated with a reduction in cortical CV. These results question the importance of post-traumatic local immune cell infiltration in the secondary growth of a cortical contusion.
