ABSTRACT

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as tools to intimidate, harass, and control the partner has been, so far, little studied in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the extension and sex differences of victimization of cyber dating abuse, as well as the context in which it occurs, and its relationship with offline psychological and physical aggressions. The sample consisted of 433 college students ages 18 to 30 years. The results showed that over 50% of the participants had been victims of some type of cyber dating abuse in the last six months. The most common behavior was the use of ICT to control the partner. Also, victims of cyber dating abuse were victimized repeatedly, an average of 23 times in the last six months. The data also showed that cyber dating abuse appear usually in a context of jealousy. Finally, the results revealed a significant relationship between cyber dating abuse and offline psychological dating aggressions. Limitations and future lines of research are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Essential processes for living cells such as transcription and replication depend on the formation of specific protein-DNA recognition complexes. Proper formation of such complexes requires suitable fitting between the protein surface and the DNA surface. By adopting doxorubicin (DOX) as a model probe, we report here that Ag3 atomic quantum clusters (Ag-AQCs) inhibit the intercalation of DOX into DNA and have considerable influence on the interaction of DNA-binding proteins such as topoisomerase IV, Escherichia coli DNA gyrase and the restriction enzyme HindIII. Ag-AQCs at nanomolar concentrations inhibit enzyme activity. The inhibitory effect of Ag-AQCs is dose-dependent and occurs by intercalation into DNA. All these effects, not observed in the presence of Ag+ ions, can explain the powerful bactericidal activity of Ag-AQCs, extending the knowledge of silver bactericidal properties. Lastly, we highlight the interest of the interaction of Ag clusters with living organisms, an area that should be further explored due to the potential consequences that it might have, both beneficial and harmful.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess child-to-parent aggression in adolescents and to document the extent of the problem. The questionnaire developed in this study, the Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire (CPAQ), includes forms of physical and psychological aggression directed at both the mother and the father. It also includes open questions about the reasons for the aggressive acts. The CPAQ was completed by a sample of 2719 adolescents (age range: 13-18 years old, 51.4% girls). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a four-factor correlated structure (physical aggression against mother, physical aggression against father, psychological aggression against mother, and psychological aggression against father). Psychological and physical aggression against the mother was more frequent than against the father. However, there were no differences with regard to severe forms of aggression. Girls scored significantly higher on all indicators of psychological aggression, including severe psychological aggression. Nevertheless, except for the prevalence of physical aggression against mothers, which was higher in females, there were no significant differences in physical aggression against parents. Finally, the reasons provided by the adolescents for the aggression included both instrumental (e.g., to obtain permission to get home late and to access their computers) and reactive reasons (e.g., anger and self-defense). These findings highlight the complexity of child-to-parent aggression in adolescence.

ABSTRACT

We describe the case of a woman with an ovarian tumor in whom the first manifestation was subacute cerebellar degeneration, a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by bilateral, symmetric cerebellar dysfunction, which usually manifests as ataxia of the trunk and extremities with subsequent dysarthria. The development of acute or subacute cerebellar manifestations in a female patient without cerebral tumor or known metastasis should lead to investigation of an unknown tumor. Elevated tumoral markers, as well as detection of antineuronal antibodies in a patient with cerebellar dysfunction is, by itself, sufficient to warrant surgery, even when diagnostic imaging tests are negative (AU)

ABSTRACT

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) can be used to screen for mothers with postnatal depression. The test is applied 3-4 days after delivery and has a high positive predictive value and a sensitivity of 80%. Patients with a positive EPDS score in the immediate postpartum should undergo subsequent evaluation to establish an early diagnosis of postnatal depression. In our study, the women most likely to develop postnatal depression were those aged more than 35 years who underwent cesarean section and whose infants required admission to the neonatal unit. These women had a relative risk 6 times higher than that of other women. Consequently, these patients should be reevaluated in the late postpartum period (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Escherichia vulneris is an enterobacteriaceae seldom isolated in microbiology laboratories. We report two cases of infection with positive cultures for this microorganism. METHODS: Microbiological cultures of wound secretion and peritoneal fluid on usual media. Identification by PASCO and API 20E systems. Antimicrobial sensitivity was performed by a commercial microdilution system. RESULTS: The first case is a postsurgical hand infection from which was isolated Escherichia vulneris with Enterococcus faecium, it shows the typical presentation of infection by this bacteria. The second case consists of a peritonitis after aggressive abdominal surgery. In the peritoneal fluid culture, Escherichia vulneris and Cedecea neteri were recovered. CONCLUSIONS: The isolation of Escherichia vulneris has not been reported previously in Spain. We contribute towards its better knowledge with two clinical reports: a typical infection and an exceptional isolation from peritoneal fluid.

ABSTRACT

The recovery rate of Moraxella catarrhalis in a selective culture medium with acetazolamide and in a conventional blood-agar medium was compared from 1291 samples from the respiratory tract and conjunctivae of children and adults with respiratory and ocular symptomatology. M. catarrhalis was recovered in 215 samples on the acetazolamide medium, and only. 18 cases in the blood agar medium (p < 0.001). The highest recovery of M. catarrhalis was in samples with an accompanying flora, either pathogenic or commensal, such as pharyngeal and nasal exudates. The prevalence of M. catarrhalis in adults and children was 2% and 28%, respectively. We therefore, recommend the use of the acetazolamide medium for the recovery of M. catarrhalis in samples where M. catarrhalis is expected to be present with an accompanying flora.

ABSTRACT

First case reported in our country with infant botulism is described in a 5 month old infant. Clinical and electrodiagnostic abnormalities are the only relatively specific findings in infant botulism, which were seen in this infant, but it requires isolation of "C. botulinum" for diagnosis confirmation. "C. botulinum" type B spores were identified in stool samples from this infant. It has been described frequently isolation of "C. botulinum" from honey specimens that had been fed to infants who subsequently developed infant botulism. They are now studying honey samples with appropriate methods (MDL-10), obtained from alimentation of this infant.

ABSTRACT

A 7 1/2 year old girl, diagnosed as having insulin dependent diabetes "mellitus" and while receiving treatment, a clinical and analytical hypothyroidism was detected. She was found to have a level of antimicrosomal antibodies of 1/102,400. Discovery of microsomal antibodies in insulin dependent diabetic children is frequently mentioned in medical literature, whereas in 25 diabetics at this Centre these findings proved to be negative. Clinical association of both these illnesses is not common.

ABSTRACT

For a long time investigators have focused attention on the relationship between specific immunity and hormones. In the present paper, authors investigated on 26 children, 9 males and 17 females, from 9 months to 14 and 10/12 years old, with primary hypothyroidism. All patients were in substitutive treatment. The following studies were done to all the patients: serum IgG, IgA, IgM and complement. Blood lymphocyte counts, percentages of B and T lymphocytes, as well as the response of lymphocytes to PHA. Skin tests were also carried out: tuberculin, candidin and streptokinase-streptodornase. All results obtained in both, hypothyroid and control groups fell within the range of normal age-matched values for our laboratory, and by results of statistics studies carried out they were considered of little significance, except the percentage of circulating B lymphocytes that was lower in hypothyroid group (p less than or equal to 0.01).
