ABSTRACT

Burnout syndrome is a mental health condition related to chronic occupational stress; its prevalence, as well as its relationship with other mental health disorders in physicians, has become a topic of growing interest. However, no studies with large sample sizes evaluate this association in dermatologists. With this background, a cross-sectional study was designed, which included 420 Spanish dermatologists; the mean age was 44.5 years (12.39), and 62% (260/420) were women. Eleven percent (45/420) of the participants presented a moderate risk of burnout, more than half of the sample had at least one of the burnout symptoms, 47% (198/420) had some degree of anxiety, and 20.3% (85/420) presented some degree of depression. Less than 1% (4/420) demonstrated a high risk of alcohol use disorder. Being female was associated with a higher risk of depression and anxiety. Meanwhile, men and residents showed an increasedrisk of alcohol use disorder. Burnout and its domains showed a significative association with depression and anxiety, while no relationship with alcohol abuse was observed.

BACKGROUND: While ultraviolet radiation (UVR) present in sunlight is recognized as the main etiological agent of skin cancer, the most frequent form of which is basal cell carcinoma (BCC), other exposome factors like pollution, diet, and lifestyle may also contribute. This study aimed to investigate the association of BCC and exposome-related factors in the Spanish population. METHODS: BCC cases (n = 119) and controls (n = 127) with no history of skin cancer were recruited between April 2020 and August 2022 by 13 dermatologists throughout Spain in this prospective multicenter case-control study. RESULTS: The BCC group had a higher proportion of outdoor workers, more years of UVR exposure, and a greater consumption of drugs (statins, ASA, hydrochlorothiazide, ACE inhibitors and omeprazole), P < 0.05. Avoidance of sun exposure was the most used photoprotection measure in both groups. The use of hats or caps was higher in the BCC group (P = 0.01). The solar protection factor (SPF) used 15 years previously was higher in the control group (P = 0.04). The control group had a higher daily screen time (P < 0.001), and practiced more relaxation activities (P = 0.03). Higher linolenic acid intake and lower coffee consumption were the only dietary variables associated with BCC (P < 0.05). Statistical significance for all the aforementioned variables was maintained in the multivariate analysis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study found a significant association between BCC and multiple exposome-related factors in addition to chronic sun exposure in the Spanish population. Primary prevention strategies should target specific populations, such as outdoor workers, promoting sun-safe behaviors and stress-reducing activities, and also adequate skin photoprotection in patients on certain medications associated with increased BCC risk.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The concept of exposome refers to the total of harmful and beneficial environmental exposures that can help predict the organism's biological responses over time. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from sun exposure has been recognized as the main etiological agent of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one most commonly associated with chronic exposure. However, in recent years, evidence suggests that lifestyle, environmental pollution, and contaminants in water and food can have an influence. OBJECTIVES: To study the relationship between SCC and sun exposure, pollution, stress, and lifestyle in a Spanish cohort. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A multicenter case-control study was carried out in which 13 dermatologists from different regions of Spain recruited cases and controls between April 2020 and August 2022. The group of cases were patients diagnosed with SCC and, as a control group, people who attended Dermatology consultations as companions with no history of skin cancer. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients with SCC and 126 controls were included (62.9% males, median age 76.46 (10.1) and 33.3%, median age 55.7 (15), respectively). The SCC group had experienced more outside work than the controls (75% vs. 22.4%, p < 0.001), less recreational exposure (sunbathing, p = 0.05, and outdoor sports, p = 0.01), and a lower annual income (p = 0.01), with an increase in tobacco exposure (p < 0.001), without differences in other carcinogens, such as ionizing radiation or chemical exposure. The control group had a higher daily screentime use (p < 0.001) and practiced more relaxation activities (p = 0.03). A higher linolenic acid intake and lower coffee consumption were the only dietary variables associated with SCC (p < 0.05). Some chronic medications (anxiolytics, antidepressants, beta-blockers, statins, hydrochlorothiazide, ACE inhibitors, metformin, and omeprazole) were also statistically associated with SCC. Statistical significance for all aforementioned variables was maintained in the multivariate analysis (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study found a significant association between SCC and multiple exposome-related factors in addition to chronic sun exposure in the Spanish population. Primary prevention strategies should target specific populations, such as outdoor workers promoting sun-safe behaviors and stress-reducing activities, in addition to adequate skin photoprotection in patients under certain medications associated with SCC.

Introduction: Research is an important aspect of medical training and plays a vital role in the advancement of evidence-based medicine. However, little is known about medical students' attitudes towards research. So, the aim of this study was to assess the opinion of medical students on scientific research. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed that included students from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Granada (UGR), Granada, Spain. A survey was distributed to assess their interest about research during undergraduate studies (1) and following graduation (2), participation in research activities (3), barriers towards research (4), expectation values and self-perceived skills (5). The opinions of students who had not taken clinical subjects (2nd year students) and students who had taken clinical subjects (4th and 6th year students) were compared. Results: 91 students were included in the study (32 were 2nd year students and 59 were 4th and 6th year students). More 4th and 6th year students showed no interest in research (50.4% vs. 28.1%, p = 0.042) or in pursuing a doctoral thesis (75% vs. 50.9%, p = 0.079) than 2nd year students. In addition, more 4th and 6th year students felt that they did not have sufficient skills to engage in scientific research (52.4% vs. 18.9%, p = 0.002). Likewise a greater number of 4th and 6th year students considered that the professors did not encourage scientific research activities (74.6% vs. 40.6%, p = 0.002). Generally, students do not participate in scientific dissemination events. The main barriers to research identified were lack of funding and lack of awareness of opportunities. Conclusion: Interest in research among medical students seems to decrease as the academic years progress. More research promotion could be implemented during the years of university studies.

Introduction: Teledermatology consultations have recently been on the rise, especially due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The role of teledermatology has been extensively discussed as a mean for the education of dermatology residents. Nevertheless, little has been explored on its use as a pedagogical tool for medical students. The objectives of this study were to assess the level of satisfaction of medical students with teledermatology and to evaluate their opinion about its use as an educational tool. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Dermatology Department, Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves, Granada (Spain). Participants were fourth-year medical students. Every student would spend half of their internship in face-to-face consultations and the other half in teledermatology consultations. Data was collected via self-administered questionnaires. Results: Eighty one students were finally surveyed, being 66.67% (73/81) female. A majority of students considered a mixed clinical internship model (face-to-face consultations combined with teledermatology) more suitable for obtaining higher marks in the subject of dermatology and in the Medical Intern Resident exam (p = 0.04). Nevertheless, face-to-face practice was considered more useful for their training as general practitioners (p = 0.04). Conclusion: Despite the fact that students highly value doctor-patient relationship, teledermatology is considered a powerful educational tool.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: While skin cancer awareness programs have significantly furthered public understanding about the harmful effects of the sun, there is a disparity between photoprotection knowledge and protection practices. OBJECTIVE: To compare sun exposure habits and photoprotection measures in patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma versus controls. METHODS: Multicentre case-control observational study carried out by 13 Spanish dermatologists between April 2020 and August 2022. Patients diagnosed with BCC, SCC, or melanoma were considered cases. The control group consisted of individuals with no history of skin cancer. RESULTS: Of the 254 cases (56.2% female; mean age, 62.67 ± 15.65), 119 (31.2%) had BCC, 62 (16.27%) SCC, and 73 (19.1%) melanoma. The control group consisted of 127 (33.33%) individuals. Avoiding sun exposure between 12:00 and 16:00 was the most commonly used photoprotection measure (habitually/always: 63.1%), followed by the use of sunscreen (habitually/always: 58.9%). Patients with melanoma were less likely to use clothing and shade to avoid sun exposure (p < .05), whereas those with BCC and SCC reported greater use of head coverings (p = .01). BCC and SCC groups reported greater sun exposure 15 years prior, whereas controls reported greater use of sunscreen. However, at the time of this study all groups reported using SPF ≥ 21, and the majority SPF > 50. No differences were observed in photoprotection measures between people with and without a previous history of skin cancer. CONCLUSIONS: We describe differences in photoprotection measures and sun exposure patterns among patients diagnosed with different skin tumor types. Whether these differences may influence the type of tumor each developed will require further investigation.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: In Spain, graduates in medicine take a state exam which, depending on their result, enables them choose a speciality in a specific hospital. Becoming a specialist in dermatology involves 4 years of training in a hospital. The content of the speciality is government regulated, although it can vary slightly in different hospitals. Feedback about this training period could provide key information to improve any failings. The aim of the study was to evaluate the perspectives of dermatologists and dermatology residents toward residency training. Materials and methods: Resident dermatologists in their final 2 years and recently qualified dermatologists answered a survey regarding the residency, and personal perspectives and objectives within dermatology. Results: A total of 54 participants answered the survey. Their mean age was 29.26 years old. Around 74% of them had had at least 3 clinical sessions per week during their residency and 87% of them considered these clinical sessions to have been useful for their training. The main shortcomings in their training were perceived as laser and esthetics, followed by trichology then research and contact dermatitis. However, 85.2% of them had done external rotations to progress in the areas they felt they needed to improve. Around 55% of the participants had considered specializing in research. Regarding research doctorates, 20.4% were doing their PhD or had already finished it, and of the remaining, 62.79% were interested in doing one. Conclusion: The opinions, feelings and aspirations of the dermatology residents are an important barometer for the future of the speciality. Training in research, laser and esthetics was perceived as a weakness by the participants, while clinical sessions and external rotations were considered good for their training. The information from this survey establishes a reference point from which present needs and future trends can be gauged.

Excipients are used as vehicles for topical treatments; however, there are not many studies that evaluate the impact of different excipients themselves. The aim of this research is to assess skin homeostasis changes in healthy individuals after using water/oil (W/O), oil/water (O/W), Beeler base, foam and Vaseline excipients. A within-person randomized trial was conducted that included healthy individuals without previous skin diseases. Skin barrier function parameters, including stratum corneum hydration (SCH), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pH, temperature, erythema, melanin and elasticity (R0, R2, R5 and R7), were measured on the volar forearm before and after using each excipient. Sixty participants were included in the study, with a mean age of 32 years. After applying w/o excipient erythema decreased by 25 AU, (p < 0.001) and elasticity increased by 6%. After using the o/w excipient, erythema decreased by 39.36 AU (p < 0.001) and SCH increased by 6.85 AU (p = 0.009). When applying the Beeler excipient, erythema decreased by 41.23 AU (p < 0.001) and SCH increased by 15.92 AU (p < 0.001). Foam and Vaseline decreased TEWL and erythema. Excipients have a different impact on skin barrier function. Knowing the effect of excipients on the skin could help to develop new topical treatments and help specialists to choose the best excipient according to the pathology.

Transepidermal water-loss (TEWL), stratum-corneum hydration (SCH), erythema, elasticity, pH and melanin, are parameters of the epidermal barrier function and skin homeostasis that objectively indicate the integrity of the skin barrier. Sunscreens are necessary to protect people from skin cancer, but could modify the skin barrier function. Nevertheless, there are not many studies on their impact on skin homeostasis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of sunscreens on the epidermal-barrier function and skin homeostasis of healthy individuals. A prospective observational study was designed. TEWL, SCH, erythema, elasticity, pH and melanin were measured on the cheek and volar region of the forearm, using non-invasive methods before and after applying sunscreen. Four different sunscreens were tested, one full-body sunscreen and three facial sunscreens. The study included 51 healthy volunteers, 72.5% (37/51) women, with a mean age of 41.63 years. After full-body sunscreen application, temperature increased by 0.68 °C (p < 0.001), pH by 0.16 units (p < 0.001), and elasticity by 0.22% (p = 0.039), while melanin decreased by 10.95 AU (p < 0.001), erythema by 28.79 AU (p < 0.001) and TEWL by 0.66 g·m−2·h−1 (p = 0.019). On the cheek, facial sunscreen 1 increased temperature by 0.51 °C, TEWL 0.7 g·m−2·h−1 (p < 0.05), pH by 0.12 units (p < 0.001) and elasticity by 0.059% (p < 0.001), but decreased erythema by 19.87 AU (p < 0.05) and SCH by 5.63 AU (p < 0.001). Facial sunscreen 2 increased temperature by 0.67 °C, TEWL by 1.93 g·m−2·h−1 (p < 0.001), pH by 0.42 units (p < 0.001) and elasticity by 0.12% (p < 0.01), but decreased melanin by 15.2 AU (p = 0.000), erythema by 38.61 AU (p < 0.05) and SCH by 10.80 AU (p < 0.01). Facial sunscreen 3 increased temperature by 1.15 °C, TEWL by 2.29 g·m−2·h−1 (p < 0.001), pH by 0.46 units (p < 0.001) and elasticity by 0.15% (p < 0.01), but decreased erythema by 35.7 (p < 0.05) and SCH by 10.80 AU (p < 0.01). In conclusion, sunscreen could slightly modify the skin-barrier function. All of them decreased erythema, likely in relation to anti-inflammatory power.

People who practice outdoor sports have an increased risk of skin cancer as they are exposed to high doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Recent studies have shown that in many athletes, sun protection behaviours are inadequate, with the risk that this entails. The aim of this review is to collect the information published to date about the knowledge, attitudes and habits of athletes in relation to sun exposure and its risks. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed and Embase with the search algorithm "(skin cancer OR melanoma) AND (exercise OR sport OR athletes)". All studies analysing the knowledge, attitudes and habits of photoprotection in athletes were included. A total of 2,365 publications were found, of which 23 were selected, including a total of 10,445 sportspeople. The majority of participants declared their voluntary intention to tan and stated that the sun made them feel better, although they also showed concern about possible damage associated with UV radiation. In most studies, less than half of the participants made adequate use of photoprotective measures. In general, most athletes had a high level of knowledge regarding the risk of skin cancer associated with sun exposure. In conclusion, most athletes are aware of the risks associated with UV radiation but do not make adequate use of photoprotective cream. New training programs on photoprotection could help improve athletes' photoprotective behaviour, reducing the incidence of skin cancer and precancerous lesions in this population.

ABSTRACT

Background: Early detection of melanoma is one of the main diagnostic goals of dermatologists worldwide, due to the increasing incidence of the disease in our environment. However, the irruption of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed a challenge to global healthcare, forcing systems to focus their resources on the fight against COVID-19. Methods: Retrospective cohort study. The exposed cohort were patients diagnosed with melanoma in the year after the general confinement in Spain (15 March 2020) and the unexposed cohort were patients with melanoma diagnosed in the previous year. Results: 130 patients were included. No differences were observed between demographic characteristics in both cohorts. The mean Breslow of melanoma before the onset of the pandemic was 1.08, increasing to 2.65 in the year after the onset of the pandemic (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the percentage of melanomas in situ decreased from 38.96% to 16.98% in the year after the declaration of the state of alarm in Spain. Conclusions: The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has led to a reduction in the early diagnosis of melanoma, with an increase in invasive melanomas with poor prognosis histological factors. This could lead to an increase in melanoma-related mortality in the coming years in our environment.

The frequency of hand hygiene has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is little evidence regarding the impact of water exposure and temperature on skin. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of water exposure and temperature on skin barrier function in healthy individuals. A prospective observational study was conducted. Temperature, pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) were measured objectively before and after hot- and cold-water exposure and TempTest® (Microcaya TempTest, Bilbao, Spain) contact. Fifty healthy volunteers were enrolled. Hot-water exposure increased TEWL (25.75 vs. 58.58 g·h-1·m-2), pH (6.33 vs. 6.65) and erythema (249.45 vs. 286.34 AU). Cold-water immersion increased TEWL (25.75 vs. 34.96 g·h-1·m-2) and pH (6.33 vs. 6.62). TEWL (7.99 vs. 9.98 g·h-1·m-2) and erythema (209.07 vs. 227.79 AU) increased after being in contact with the hot region (44 °C) of the TempTest. No significant differences were found after contact with the cold region (4 °C) of the TempTest. In conclusion, long and continuous water exposure damages skin barrier function, with hot water being even more harmful. It would be advisable to use cold or lukewarm water for handwashing and avoid hot water. Knowing the proper temperature for hand washing might be an important measure to prevent flares in patients with previous inflammatory skin diseases on their hands.

Exposome factors, such as sleep deprivation and diet, could affect skin barrier function. The objectives of this study are to compare skin barrier function between patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and healthy individuals, and to evaluate the effect of other exposome factors on skin. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients with OSAS and healthy volunteers matched by age and sex were included. OSAS severity was assessed by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI). Validated questionnaires were used to assess diet, anxiety, depression, and psychological stress. Skin barrier function parameters including temperature, erythema, melanin, pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) were measured on the volar forearm. A total of 86 participants were included, 56 patients with OSAS and 30 healthy volunteers. TEWL was higher in OSAS patients than in healthy individuals (8.01 vs. 8.68 g·m-2·h-1). Regarding disease severity, severe patients had higher TEWL values (9.31 vs. 8.46 vs. 7.08 g·m-2·h-1) compared to moderate and mild patients. Patients with OSAS had significantly lower sleep quality (11.89 vs. 6.47 Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score; p < 0.001), poor adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (8.46 vs. 9.77; p = 0.005), and significantly higher anxiety and depression levels than healthy individuals. In conclusion, patients with OSAS may have skin barrier impairment, reflected in higher TEWL values. These patients also have higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, and a lower adherence to a Mediterranean Diet, all exposome factors that might impact on skin barrier function.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is a major global health problem. There is a need to develop techniques to help physicians select the most appropriate cost-effective therapy for each patient. The main objectives of this study are (1) to evaluate changes in epidermal barrier function and skin homeostasis after phototherapy and (2) to explore potentially predictive values in epidermal barrier function and skin homeostasis to assess clinical improvement after fifteen sessions of phototherapy. A total of 76 subjects, 38 patients with plaque-type psoriasis and 38 gender- and age-matched healthy volunteers, were included in the study. Erythema, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), temperature, stratum corneum hydration (SCH), pH, sebum, and antioxidant capacity were measured before and after the first and fifteenth phototherapy session. Erythema (401.09 vs. 291.12 vs. 284.52 AU, p < 0.001) and TEWL (18.23 vs. 11.44 vs. 11.41 g·m-2·h-1, p < 0.001) were significantly higher at psoriatic plaques than in uninvolved psoriatic skin and healthy volunteers, respectively, while SCH was lower (9.71 vs. 44.64 vs. 40.00 AU, p < 0.001). After fifteen phototherapy sessions, TEWL (-5.19 g·m-2·h-1, p = 0.016) decreased while SCH (+7.01 AU, p = 0.013) and erythema (+30.82 AU, p = 0.083) increased at psoriatic plaques. An erythema increase exceeding 53.23 AU after the first phototherapy session, with a sensitivity of 71.4% and specificity of 84.2%, indicates that a patient may improve Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) by ≥3 points after fifteen phototherapy sessions. In conclusion, phototherapy improves epidermal barrier function in psoriatic patients and the erythema increase after one phototherapy session could help doctors select psoriasis patients who are more likely to respond to phototherapy.

BACKGROUND: Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), and skin surface pH are indicators of skin barrier integrity. There is scant evidence on normative data for cutaneous homeostasis parameters in healthy individuals. OBJECTIVES: To develop normative data for skin erythema, melanin, pH, SCH, and TEWL; identify differences in these variables among different anatomical locations; and explore factors that may modify these values. MATERIAL & METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 87 healthy volunteers (34 males) aged 20 to 40 years. TEWL, SCH, pH, erythema, and melanin were measured on the cheeks, volar forearms, and palms. RESULTS: The lowest TEWL value corresponded to volar forearms (9.69 ± 2.94 g m-2·h-1) and the highest to palms (49.32 ± 14.55 g m-2·h-1). Erythema was more evident on cheeks than palms or volar forearms (413.51 arbitruary units [AU] vs. 259.98 AU vs. 252.02 AU). The lowest melanin index was documented for palms (92.72 ± 41.70 AU). pH levels were similar among the different locations. The erythema index was significantly higher in males versus females for all locations. Linear regression analysis adjusted for age and SCH revealed an increase in 0.45 ± 0.18 g m-2·h-1 for TEWL on the cheek and 0.32 ± 0.10 g m-2·h-1 for TEWL on the forearm for each one-year increase in age. CONCLUSION: We provide normative data for individuals aged 20-40 years, across three anatomical locations, and propose a predictive model for TEWL on the cheek and forearm as a function of age and SCH.

ABSTRACT

Tattoos are a current trend, but their impact on skin homeostasis and epidermal barrier function is not well known. So, the aims of this study are (1) to investigate epidermal barrier function and skin homeostasis in skin with permanent tattoos, adhesive temporary tattoos and non-tattooed skin, and (2) to analyze the effect of petrolatum on skin with permanent and adhesive tattoos. In total, 67 tattoos were enrolled (34 permanent tattoos and 33 adhesive tattoos). Temperature, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), erythema and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were measured in skin with permanent tattoos, adhesive tattoos and non-tattooed skin before and after petrolatum application. The temperature was lower (30.47 °C vs. 31.01 °C; p = 0.001) on skin with permanent tattoos than non-tattooed skin, while SCH (48.24 Arbitrary Units (AU) vs. 44.15 AU; p = 0.008) was higher. Skin with adhesive tattoos showed lower temperature, SCH (21.19 AU vs. 41.31 AU; p < 0.001) and TAC (1.27 microcoulombs (uC) vs. 3.48 uC; p < 0.001), and higher TEWL (8.65 g/h/m2 vs. 6.99 g/h/m2; p = 0.003), than non-tattooed skin. After petrolatum application, the temperature decreased on skin with permanent tattoos, and TEWL and SCH decreased on skin with adhesive tattoos. Adhesive tattoos may affect skin barrier function, while permanent tattoos may have a lower impact. Tattooed and non-tattooed skin responds in different ways to moisturizers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Some skin diseases may modify epidermal barrier function. Psoriasis is a chronic multi-systemic inflammatory disease that affects the epidermal barrier. Phototherapy is an option for treating psoriasis, but little is known about how epidermal barrier function is modified by phototherapy in psoriatic patients. OBJECTIVES: (a) To compare skin homeostasis between involved and uninvolved skin in psoriatic patients with healthy controls (b) To evaluate changes in the epidermal barrier function in psoriatic patients treated with phototherapy. METHODS: Sixty patients with plaque-type psoriasis and sixty gender and age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Temperature, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), pH, elasticity, erythema and melanin index were measured using non-invasive tools in the healthy control and involved and uninvolved psoriatic skin before and after phototherapy. RESULTS: Healthy controls had lower TEWL and erythema index and higher SCH than psoriatic patients, both at uninvolved psoriatic skin and psoriasis plaques. TEWL was higher at psoriasis plaques than at uninvolved skin (19.20 vs 11.57 g/h/m2 ; P < .001). Following phototherapy, a decreasing trend was observed for TEWL, of 1.03 (SD 0.75) and 0.97 (SD 0.81) g/h/m2 for uninvolved and involved skin respectively. SCH was significantly lower at psoriatic plaques than at uninvolved skin (7.32 vs 36.62Arbitrary Units [AU]; P < .001). SCH increased by 1.15AU (SD 0.26) on psoriatic plaques after the phototherapy session (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Psoriatic plaques showed epidermal barrier dysfunction compared to uninvolved skin and healthy controls. Phototherapy may improve epidermal barrier function in psoriatic patients. SCH increased after a phototherapy session on the psoriatic plaques.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyse the levels of anxiety, depression, and quality of life of individuals living with acne patients (cohabitants). The study included patients, cohabitants, and controls; a total of 204 participants. Patients' health-related quality of life was measured with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), while cohabitants' quality of life was measured with the Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI). The psychological state of all participants was measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Presence of acne impaired the quality of life of 89.4% of the cohabitants. The FDLQI scores of cohabitants were significantly associated with the DLQI scores of the patients (rp = 0.294; p = 0.044). Anxiety and depression levels in cohabitants were significantly higher than in controls (p < 0.01). In conclusion, acne may have a negative impact on quality of life and psychological well-being of patients and their cohabitants.
