ABSTRACT

This study was designed to compare performance, carcass and meat quality of crossbred of a hybrid sow x three sire lines, i.e. stress positive Belgian Piétrain (BP), stress negative French Piétrain (FP) and Canadian Duroc (CD). BP offspring had a significantly higher carcass yield (p < .001) and lean meat content (p < .001) in comparison with FP, which was higher than CD. BP offspring had significantly lower pH (p < .05), water-holding capacity (WHC) (p < .001) and intramuscular fat (IMF) (p < .001) content in the loin compared to FP and CD, but these meat quality parameters, with the exception of pH, were superior for CD as compared to FP. In accordance with loin quality, pHi, pHu, WHC and IMF of BP were significantly lower (p < .05) compared to CD in the fresh and cooked ham. Most often, FP offspring could not be differentiated from the other offspring, with the exception of cooking loss of the cooked ham. Trained and consumer taste panels resulted in no significant differences (p > .1) in sensory attributes, however, consumers preffered CD based on ranking.

ABSTRACT

The biosecurity status of 95 breeder-finisher pig herds was quantified using a risk-based weighted scoring system. Data relating to herd-, farmer- and production-characteristics and to the prophylactic use of antimicrobials were also collected. The average external biosecurity score (measures to prevent pathogens from entering a herd) was 65 (range, 45-89) and the average internal score (measures to reduce the within-herd spread of pathogens) was 52 (range, 18-87). External scores were positively associated with herd size, while internal scores were negatively associated with both 'age of buildings' and 'years of experience of the farmer', indicating that biosecurity is generally better implemented in larger herds, in more modern facilities and by younger farmers. External and internal biosecurity scores were positively associated with daily weight gain and negatively associated with feed conversion ratio of fattening pigs. Internal scores were negatively associated with disease treatment incidence, suggesting that improved biosecurity might help in reducing the amount of antimicrobials used prophylactically. This study demonstrates and quantifies a clear link between biosecurity and both production- and antimicrobial treatment-related criteria in pig herds.

ABSTRACT

Acidity constants of benzoxa-, benzothia- and benzoselena-zolinone derivatives were determined by capillary electrophoresis, potentiometry and spectrophotometry experiments. These three analytical techniques gave pK(a) results that were in good agreement. A convenient, accurate and precise method for the determination of pK(a) was developed to measure changes in acidity constants induced by heteroatom or 6-benzoyl substituted derivatives. pK(a) values were determined simultaneously for two compounds characterized by different electrophoretic mobility (micro(e)) and pK(a) value and in the presence of an analogous neutral marker.

ABSTRACT

Few patients with trisomy of the most distal region of chromosome 7q have been described. We report on a familial translocation t(2;7)(q37;q35) leading to trisomy 7q35-->7qter in a child and her paternal uncle and a minimal deletion of distal 2q as demonstrated by FISH with probes located in the chromosome 2q subtelomeric region. The clinical phenotype included macrocephaly and low-set ears, also found in other reported patients trisomic for the distal part of chromosome 7q. Phenotypic findings probably useful for the clinical diagnosis include normal size at birth, large head with frontal bossing, low-set ears of normal shape, small nose and low nasal bridge, feeding difficulties in infancy, and severe neurodevelopmental delay.

ABSTRACT

Before the advent of modern techniques, diagnosing unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm in the living patient was rare, with most of the reports coming from autopsy or surgery. Once rupture occurs however, characteristic symptoms and signs, such as precordial distress, a continuous murmur over the base of the heart, pulmonary congestion, and congestive heart failure, usually occur rather abruptly. We describe a case of ruptured aneurysm of the non-coronary sinus of Valsalva diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography and Doppler as a single examination for quickly establishing a correct diagnosis in patients with a new continuous murmur.

ABSTRACT

Although poisoning with calcium channel blocking agents is frequent, to our knowledge no cases involving amlodipine have been published. We describe here a case of amlodipine intoxication, in which protracted hypotension did not respond to vasopressor therapy alone. After the addition of continuous calcium chloride and glucagon infusion, blood pressure was restored and vasopressor therapy could be tapered off substantially. When calcium and glucagon were interrupted because of severe hypercalcemia and hyperglycemia, the patient developed irreversible hypotension and died. Either glucagon or calcium or both, and to some extent vasopressors, seem to have constituted effective treatment of hypotension in this case.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Salt sensitivity and the magnitude of systolic blood pressure have been linked to haptoglobin (Hp) polymorphism in normotensives. The aim of the present study was to investigate the indices of hypertension, the severity of complications and the occurrence of coronary and peripheral artery disease for the various haptoglobin phenotypes and their relation to the therapeutic needs (number and class of drugs) of established arterial hypertensives. DESIGN: Haptoglobin polymorphism was studied in 302 Caucasians with established essential arterial hypertension who had been treated for at least 1 year. METHODS: Haptoglobin polymorphism was studied using starch-gel electrophoresis of haemoglobin-supplemented serum. RESULTS: The relative allele frequencies of Hp 1 and Hp 2 (0.036 and 0.640, respectively) in established hypertensives were comparable with those of the control population. Logistic regression analysis confirmed that Hp 2-2 contributes to the therapeutic needs in hypertension. The most important factors determining therapeutic needs were coronary artery disease, Hp 2-2 phenotype, body mass index (BMI) and left ventricular hypertrophy. Although no contributive effect of serum haptoglobin concentration could be derived from the logistic regression approach, analysis of serum haptoglobin concentration demonstrated a concentration-related effect on therapeutic needs for the Hp 2-2 phenotype only. CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that hypertensives with an Hp 2-2 phenotype need more complex combinations of antihypertensive drugs to reduce blood pressure to the same level. The hypertensive patient carrying Hp 2-2 is more likely to accumulate atherosclerotic lesions of the coronary or peripheral arteries, despite comparable lipid levels, smoking habits and BMI. Hp 1-1 patients are characterized by a younger age at diagnosis and a lower complication rate. In view of the greater therapeutic needs and the higher complication rate, Hp 2-2 hypertensives need more careful follow-up.

ABSTRACT

It is often suggested but never proven that atrial function is not affected during atrial flutter, nor after its conversion to normal sinus rhythm. To evaluate this hypothesis, a prospective study was performed in 22 patients (age range 20 to 88 years) with atrial flutter. Diastolic transmitral flow was analyzed with echo-Doppler before and after conversion. After randomization, conversion was attempted with overdrive pacing or up to two 50 J shocks. If the initial method was unsuccessful, a 200 J shock was administered. All patients were converted to sinus rhythm with this protocol. Shortly after conversion (at 1 and 6 hours), atrial contribution to ventricular filling was absent in 4 of 22 patients. In the remaining 18 patients, atrial contribution to ventricular filling was small. Atrial contribution to transmitral flow improved from 20 to 27% within 24 hours (p < 0.01) and increased further to 38% at 6 weeks (p < 0.005). Peak velocity of late diastolic filling increased from 0.28 m/s after 1 hour to 0.39 m/s after 24 hours (p < 0.0001) and improved even further during later follow-up. In 1 patient, an effective atrial systole was not observed until the 14th day. Cardiac output did not change significantly during the study period. No differences were observed between the conversion modalities. In conclusion, atrial dysfunction is present immediately after conversion of atrial flutter to normal sinus rhythm. This dysfunction occurs also after overdrive pacing and can last > 1 week. The findings suggest that stasis in the atria can remain temporarily present after successful conversion of atrial flutter to sinus rhythm.
