ABSTRACT

Background: Maternal obesity is a health concern that may predispose newborns to a high risk of medical problems later in life. To understand the transgenerational effect of maternal obesity, we conducted a multi-omics study, using DNA methylation and gene expression in the CD34+/CD38-/Lin-umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem cells (uHSCs) and metabolomics of the cord blood, all from a multi-ethnic cohort (n=72) from Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii (collected between 2016 and 2018). Results: Differential methylation (DM) analysis unveiled a global hypermethylation pattern in the maternal pre-pregnancy obese group (BH adjusted p<0.05), after adjusting for major clinical confounders. Comprehensive functional analysis showed hypermethylation in promoters of genes involved in cell cycle, protein synthesis, immune signaling, and lipid metabolism. Utilizing Shannon entropy on uHSCs methylation, we discerned notably higher quiescence of uHSCs impacted by maternal obesity. Additionally, the integration of multi-omics data-including methylation, gene expression, and metabolomics-provided further evidence of dysfunctions in adipogenesis, erythropoietin production, cell differentiation, and DNA repair, aligning with the findings at the epigenetic level. Furthermore, the CpG sites associated with maternal obesity from these pathways also predicted highly accurately (average AUC = 0.8687) between cancer vs. normal tissues in 14 cancer types in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Conclusions: This study revealed the significant correlation between pre-pregnancy maternal obesity and multi-omics level molecular changes in the uHSCs of offspring, particularly in DNA methylation. Moreover, these maternal obesity epigenetic markers in uHSCs may predispose offspring to higher cancer risks.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Immunosuppressed individuals have elevated risk of virus-related cancers. Identifying cancers with elevated risk in people with HIV (PWH) and solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs), two immunosuppressed populations, may help identify novel etiologic relationships with infectious agents. METHODS: We utilized two linkages of population-based cancer registries with HIV and transplant registries in the United States. Cancer entities were systematically classified based on site and histology codes. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were used to compare risk in PWH and SOTRs with the general population. For selected cancer entities, incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated for indicators of immunosuppression within each population. FINDINGS: We identified 38,047 cancer cases in SOTRs and 53,592 in PWH, yielding overall SIRs of 1.66 (95%CI = 1.65-1.68) and 1.49 (95%CI = 1.47-1.50), respectively. Forty-three cancer entities met selection criteria, including conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (PWH SIR = 7.1, 95%CI = 5.5-9.2; SOTRs SIR = 9.4; 95%CI = 6.8-12.6). Sebaceous adenocarcinoma was elevated in SOTRs (SIR = 16.2; 95%CI = 14.0-18.6) and, among SOTRs, associated with greater risk in lung/heart transplant recipients compared to recipients of other organs (IRR = 2.3; 95%CI = 1.7-3.2). Salivary gland tumors, malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma showed elevated risk in SOTRs (SIR = 3.9; SIR = 4.7; and SIR = 3.2, respectively) but not in PWH. However, risks for these cancers were elevated following an AIDS diagnosis among PWH (IRR = 2.4; IRR = 4.3; and IRR = 2.0, respectively). INTERPRETATION: Elevated SIRs among SOTRs and PWH, and associations with immunosuppression within these populations, suggest novel infectious causes for several cancers including conjunctival SCC, sebaceous adenocarcinoma, salivary gland tumors, MFH, and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is an uncommon soft-tissue sarcoma with primary incidence of 4.1 per million person-years and accounts for 0.1% of all malignancies. In patients under the age of 19, DFSP comprises 6% of cases with an annual incidence of 1 in 1,000,000. It is a slow-growing malignancy with low metastatic potential. However, DFSP is notable for its high rates of local recurrence due to local invasion with its classic "finger-like" projections into normal tissue. We discuss a case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans on the scalp of a 14-year-old male with delayed diagnosis, which required extensive resection through slow Mohs Micrographic Surgery (sMMS). This resection created a sizeable scalp defect of nearly 100 cm 2 , which mandated creative reconstruction using a novel double rotational-advancement scalp flap to close the defect while maintaining the patient's hairline for optimal cosmesis.

ABSTRACT

The 1967 attempt of structural analysis of the solid-state complex of caffeine and pyrogallol was a pioneering structural investigation in the supramolecular chemistry of caffeine, of what today would easily be considered an archetype of a model pharmaceutical cocrystal. Re-investigating this historically important system demonstrates that this long overlooked complex is most likely a tetrahydrate with a different structure and composition than initially proposed, and provides the crystal structure of the anhydrous cocrystal.

ABSTRACT

The AS04-adjuvanted human papillomavirus (HPV)16/18 vaccine, an L1-based vaccine, provides strong vaccine efficacy (VE) against vaccine-targeted type infections, and partial cross-protection to phylogenetically-related types, which may be affected by variant-level heterogeneity. We compared VE against incident HPV31, 33, 35, and 45 detections between lineages and SNPs in the L1 region among 2846 HPV-vaccinated and 5465 HPV-unvaccinated women through 11-years of follow-up in the Costa Rica HPV Vaccine Trial. VE was lower against HPV31-lineage-B (VE=60.7%;95%CI = 23.4%,82.8%) compared to HPV31-lineage-A (VE=94.3%;95%CI = 83.7%,100.0%) (VE-ratio = 0.64;95%CI = 0.25,0.90). Differential VE was observed at several lineage-associated HPV31-L1-SNPs, including a nonsynonymous substitution at position 6372 on the FG-loop, an important neutralization domain. For HPV35, the only SNP-level difference was at position 5939 on the DE-loop, with significant VE against nucleotide-G (VE=65.0%;95%CI = 28.0,87.8) but not for more the common nucleotide-A (VE=7.4%;95%CI = -34.1,36.7). Because of the known heterogeneity in precancer/cancer risk across cross-protected HPV genotype variants by race and region, our results of differential variant-level AS04-adjuvanted HPV16/18 vaccine efficacy has global health implications.

ABSTRACT

The first total syntheses of glycoborinine, clausenawalline A, and clausenawalline E were achieved. The key step employed a vanadium-catalyzed oxidative coupling of two hydroxycarbazole monomers. High-throughput experimentation was used to identify conditions favoring selective heterocoupling of these monomers that possess similar redox potentials. A combination of a vanadium catalyst and 4-acetamido-TEMPO gives rise to greatly enhanced cross selectivity relative to the vanadium catalyst alone. Conditions to selectively form homodimer clausenawalline A or heterodimer clausenawalline E as the major product were found.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate patient attitudes towards desire for and barriers to utilizing telemedicine visits for head and neck oncology care. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of data from cross-sectional survey responses collected via prospectively administered questionnaire to 616 adult patients during their clinical visit to a tertiary care head and neck surgical oncology clinic. Responses to questions investigating interest in telemedicine and potential barriers were collated with patient demographics, measures of rurality, and insurance status. Interest in telemedicine appointments was the assessed primary outcome. RESULTS: Of 616 survey respondents, 315 (51 %) indicated interest in telemedicine visits. Limitations in access to technology (17.5 %) and lack of reliable internet connection (13.14 %) were identified as key barriers to telemedicine use. Lack of interest in telemedicine was associated with older age (OR 0.97 [95%CI 0.96-0.98]), governmental insurance (0.43 [0.31-0.60]) and, retired work status (0.48 [0.33-0.69]). Women (1.43 [1.04-1.97]) and patients who reported access to compatible electronic devices (41.05 [14.88-113.20]) and reliable internet connection (20.94 [8.34-52.60]) were more likely to be interested in telemedicine appointments. Respondents also indicated preference for a "hands on" examination over telemedicine appointments. CONCLUSION: Nearly 1 in 2 patients evaluated in a tertiary care head and neck surgical oncology clinic expressed reticence regarding telemedicine for clinical visits. Limited access to technology platforms and unreliable internet remain key concerns for these patients. Understanding the needs and attitudes of specific patient populations may be important for organizations pivoting to telemedicine platforms to ensure equity in healthcare access. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the use of Descemet membrane anterior keratoplasty (DMAK) with modified allogeneic simple limbal epithelial transplantation to treat a case of partial limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) following keratolimbal allograft failure. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 21-year-old woman with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome-related LSCD presented with pain and decreased vision. There was partial failure and recurrence of LSCD after a severe/acute keratolimbal allograft rejection that led to persistent epithelial defects refractory to conservative therapy. This was treated with a superficial keratectomy and placement of a DMAK. A modified allogeneic simple limbal epithelial transplantation was performed with an overlying amniotic membrane and temporary tarsorrhaphy. There was epithelialization of the corneal surface by 3 to 4 weeks with an improved ocular surface. Despite partial recurrence of late staining, the cornea has remained epithelized, vision has improved, and the patient has remained pain-free more than 1.5 years following the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: DMAK may be a long-term substrate to help improve and maintain epithelization of the cornea up to 1.5 years. DMAK may be a viable alternative to using amniotic membrane as a scaffold in allogeneic simple limbal epithelial transplantation for treatment of partial LSCD. While late epithelial staining recurred in our patient, DMAK appears to prevent recurrent epithelial defects and reduce ocular surface pain, conveying an improvement in quality of life in patients at high risk of rejection/failure.

OBJECTIVE: To report the surgical technique, complications, and outcomes of 8 dogs that underwent a unilateral pantarsal arthrodesis stabilized using a circular external skeletal fixator (CESF) construct for the treatment of uni- or multilevel tarsal instability. ANIMALS: 8 dogs. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Medical records from 2010 to 2023 from 2 small animal hospitals were retrospectively reviewed for dogs undergoing pantarsal arthrodeses stabilized with CESF. Data collected for each dog included signalment, injury etiology, construct configuration, radiographic imaging, antimicrobial use, complications, length of time until construct removal, and outcome based on clinical evaluation by the owner and veterinary surgeon. RESULTS: 8 dogs met the requirements of inclusion for the study. Dogs had a mean age of 5.5 years (range, 0.42 to 13 years) and weight of 15.1 kg (range, 2.5 to 26.4 kg). Angulated 3- and 4-ring constructs were used in 5 and 3 dogs, respectively, with or without hybridization. Tarsi were stabilized with a mean angle of extension of 124.8° (range, 111.5° to 136.5°). Fixator removal was performed at a mean time of 11.3 weeks (range, 6 to 16 weeks). Complications developed in 4 dogs, 2 of which had poor clinical outcomes despite additional interventions, including recurrent digit trauma and poor limb use postoperatively. Six dogs had excellent outcomes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A CESF may be considered as an alternative to plate stabilization when performing a pantarsal arthrodesis. This fixation requires rigorous postoperative care but obviates the need for supplemental postoperative coaptation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Mammographic density phenotypes, adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI), are strong predictors of breast cancer risk. BMI is associated with mammographic density measures, but the role of circulating sex hormone concentrations is less clear. We investigated the relationship between BMI, circulating sex hormone concentrations, and mammographic density phenotypes using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: We applied two-sample MR approaches to assess the association between genetically predicted circulating concentrations of sex hormones [estradiol, testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)], BMI, and mammographic density phenotypes (dense and non-dense area). We created instrumental variables from large European ancestry-based genome-wide association studies and applied estimates to mammographic density phenotypes in up to 14,000 women of European ancestry. We performed analyses overall and by menopausal status. RESULTS: Genetically predicted BMI was positively associated with non-dense area (IVW: ß = 1.79; 95% CI = 1.58, 2.00; p = 9.57 × 10-63) and inversely associated with dense area (IVW: ß = - 0.37; 95% CI = - 0.51,- 0.23; p = 4.7 × 10-7). We observed weak evidence for an association of circulating sex hormone concentrations with mammographic density phenotypes, specifically inverse associations between genetically predicted testosterone concentration and dense area (ß = - 0.22; 95% CI = - 0.38, - 0.053; p = 0.009) and between genetically predicted estradiol concentration and non-dense area (ß = - 3.32; 95% CI = - 5.83, - 0.82; p = 0.009), although results were not consistent across a range of MR approaches. CONCLUSION: Our findings support a positive causal association between BMI and mammographic non-dense area and an inverse association between BMI and dense area. Evidence was weaker and inconsistent for a causal effect of circulating sex hormone concentrations on mammographic density phenotypes. Based on our findings, associations between circulating sex hormone concentrations and mammographic density phenotypes are weak at best.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogen bonding is a key factor in the design of ligands for biological binding, including drug targets. Our group previously developed a method for experimentally assessing the hydrogen-bond-donating ability of an analyte using UV-vis titrations with a colorimetric sensor. Using this method, 79 new titrations were performed on weak hydrogen-bond donors, with a focus on heterocycles and pharmaceutically relevant motifs. The hydrogen-bond donating abilities of drug compounds and the substructures of drug compounds were also measured. These titrations will be used to build a database of hydrogen-bond donors.

ABSTRACT

Benchtop pulsed x-ray systems are commonly used to record dynamic material data on the order of nanoseconds, but pulse timing is often difficult to accurately determine. This study demonstrates that commercially available photodiodes can be used effectively for direct x-ray pulse detection without the need for visible light scintillators. X-ray pulses from four commercially available flash x-ray systems were quantified using one silicon and two indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) photodiodes. The measured InGaAs pulse durations were strongly dependent on radiation dose in the non-linear operating regime, so the photodiodes were shielded to operate below the 2.5 V non-linear regime threshold. The average pulse duration and pulse arrival time jitter of the photodiodes for each x-ray source were within several nanoseconds with the exception of two sets of measurements that were affected by low instrument sensitivity and electrical noise. These results show that InGaAs photodiodes can be used as effective and repeatable stand-alone timing diagnostics for x-ray pulses as short as 20 ns or less.

ABSTRACT

Distinct, seemingly independent, cellular pathways affecting intracellular machineries or extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition and organization, have been implicated in aneurysm formation. One of the key genes associated with the pathology in both humans and mice is Lysyl oxidase (LOX), a secreted ECM-modifying enzyme, highly expressed in medial vascular smooth muscle cells. To dissect the mechanisms leading to aneurysm development, we conditionally deleted Lox in smooth muscle cells. We find that cytoskeletal organization is lost following Lox deletion. Cell culture assays and in vivo analyses demonstrate a cell-autonomous role for LOX affecting myosin light chain phosphorylation and cytoskeletal assembly resulting in irregular smooth muscle contraction. These results not only highlight new intracellular roles for LOX, but notably they link between multiple processes leading to aneurysm formation suggesting LOX coordinates ECM development, cytoskeletal organization and cell contraction required for media development and function.

Background: Bithermal caloric irrigation, video head impulse test (vHIT), and rotational testing are commonly used to assess peripheral vestibular function, but the relative clinical utility of each test in differentiating patients with peripheral vestibulopathy is debated. Objectives: To determine whether (1) the combination of two or more vestibular tests enhances diagnostic utility over a single test; (2) abnormal test results on vestibular tests correlate with one another. Methods: Retrospective analysis of data collected from multidisciplinary vestibular clinics at two academic medical centers from 2016 to 2022. Results: 150 patients (54.10 ± 15.09 years, 88 females) were included. No individual test was significantly better at predicting the presence of peripheral vestibular damage (p > 0.05). vHIT test results improved significantly when combined with either the caloric test (p = 0.007) or rotary chair test (p = 0.039). Caloric and rotational testing had high sensitivity (74.65% and 76.06%, respectively) and specificity (83.54% and 78.48%, respectively). vHIT demonstrated excellent specificity (89.87%) but poor sensitivity (47.89%). Caloric, vHIT, and rotary chair tests results did not correlate with one another (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Vestibular function tests have comparable diagnostic utility, yet each offers unique advantages. Caloric and rotational testing may be best suited for screening peripheral damage and vHIT may function ideally as a confirmatory test.

BACKGROUND: The recent expansion of immunotherapy for stage IIB/IIC melanoma highlights a growing clinical need to identify patients at high risk of metastatic recurrence and, therefore, most likely to benefit from this therapeutic modality. OBJECTIVE: To develop time-to-event risk prediction models for melanoma metastatic recurrence. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with stage I/II primary cutaneous melanoma between 2000 and 2020 at Mass General Brigham and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute were included. Melanoma recurrence date and type were determined by chart review. Thirty clinicopathologic factors were extracted from electronic health records. Three types of time-to-event machine-learning models were evaluated internally and externally in the distant versus locoregional/nonrecurrence prediction. RESULTS: This study included 954 melanomas (155 distant, 163 locoregional, and 636 1:2 matched nonrecurrences). Distant recurrences were associated with worse survival compared to locoregional/nonrecurrences (HR: 6.21, P < .001) and to locoregional recurrences only (HR: 5.79, P < .001). The Gradient Boosting Survival model achieved the best performance (concordance index: 0.816; time-dependent AUC: 0.842; Brier score: 0.103) in the external validation. LIMITATIONS: Retrospective nature and cohort from one geography. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that time-to-event machine-learning models can reliably predict the metastatic recurrence from localized melanoma and help identify high-risk patients who are most likely to benefit from immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III is a precursor to squamous cell carcinoma of the anus for which rates are nearly 20-fold higher in people with HIV than in the general population in the United States. We describe trends in anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III diagnosis and risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus following anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III by HIV status and sex. METHODS: We used data from a population-based linkage between cancer and HIV registries in 11 US states; Puerto Rico; and Washington, DC, during 1996-2019. We identified all individuals with a diagnosis of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III and determined their HIV status. We estimated the average annual percentage change of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III using Poisson regression stratified by HIV status and sex. We estimated the 5-year cumulative incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus following an anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III diagnosis stratified by sex, HIV status, and prior AIDS diagnosis. RESULTS: Among people with HIV, average annual percentage changes for anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III were 15% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 12% to 17%) per year among females and 12% (95% CI = 11% to 14%) among males. Average annual percentage changes for those without HIV were 8% (95% CI = 7% to 8%) for females and 8% (95% CI = 6% to 9%) for males. Among people with HIV, a prior AIDS diagnosis was associated with a 2.7-fold (95% CI = 2.23 to 3.40) and 1.9-fold (95% CI = 1.72 to 2.02) increased risk of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III diagnosis for females and males, respectively. Five-year cumulative incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus following anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III for people with HIV with a prior AIDS diagnosis were 3.4% and 3.7% for females and males, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Rates of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III diagnoses have increased since 1996, particularly for people with HIV, likely influenced by increased screening. A prior AIDS diagnosis was strongly associated with risk of anal intraepithelial neoplasia grade III diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Wearable sensors are increasingly popular in concussion research because of their objective quantification of subtle balance deficits. However, normative data and minimum detectable change values are necessary to serve as a references for diagnostic use and tracking longitudinal recovery. OBJECTIVE: Identify normative values and minimal detectable change values for instrumented static and reactive balance tests, an instrumented static Mediolateral Root Mean Square (ML RMS) sway standing balance assessment, and the instrumented, modified Push & Release (I-mP&R), respectively. DESIGN: Cross-Sectional Study. SETTING: Clinical Setting. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Normative static ML RMS sway and I-mP&R data were collected on 377 (n=184 females) healthy National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes at the beginning of their competitive seasons. Test-retest data were collected in 36 healthy control athletes based on standard recovery timelines after concussion. RESULTS: Descriptive statistics, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and minimal detectable change (MDC) values were calculated for primary outcomes of mediolateral (ML) root-mean-square (RMS) sway in a static double limb-stance standing on firm ground and a foam block, and time to stability and latency from the I-mP&R in single- and dual-task conditions. RESULTS: Normative outcomes across static ML RMS sway and I-mP&R were sensitive to sex and type of footwear. ML RMS sway demonstrated moderate reliability in the firm condition (ICC=0.73; MDC=2.7cm/s2), but poor reliability in the foam condition (ICC=0.43; MDC=11.1cm/s2). Single- and dual-task time to stability from the I-mP&R exhibited good reliability (ICC=0.84 and 0.80, respectfully; MDC=0.25s, 0.59s, respectfully). Latency from the I-mP&R had poor to moderate reliability (ICC=0.38, 0.55; MDC=107ms, 105ms). CONCLUSIONS: Sex-matched references should be used for instrumented static and reactive balance assessments. Footwear may explain variability in static ML RMS sway and time to stability of the I-mP&R. Moderate-to-good reliability suggest time to stability from the I-mP&R and ML RMS static sway on firm ground can be used for longitudinal assessments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of substance use in people with HIV (PWH) in the United States is higher than in the general population and is an important driver of HIV-related outcomes. We sought to assess if previously identified genetic associations that contribute to substance use are also observed in a population of PWH. METHODS: We performed genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of alcohol, smoking, and cannabis use phenotypes in a multi-ancestry population of 7,542 PWH from the Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS). We conducted multi-ancestry GWAS for individuals of African (n = 3,748), Admixed American (n = 1,334), and European (n = 2,460) ancestry. Phenotype data were self-reported and collected using patient reported outcomes (PROs) and three questions from AUDIT-C, an alcohol screening tool. We analyzed nine phenotypes: 1) frequency of alcohol consumption, 2) typical number of drinks on a day when drinking alcohol, 3) frequency of five or more alcoholic drinks in a 30-day period, 4) smoking initiation, 5) smoking cessation, 6) cigarettes per day, 7) cannabis use initiation, 8) cannabis use cessation, 9) frequency of cannabis use during the previous 30 days. For each phenotype we considered a) variants previously identified as associated with a substance use trait and b) novel associations. RESULTS: We observed evidence for effects of previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to alcohol (rs1229984, p = 0.001), tobacco (rs11783093, p = 2.22E-4), and cannabis use (rs2875907, p = 0.005). We also report two novel loci (19p13.2, p = 1.3E-8; and 20p11.21, p = 2.1E-8) associated with cannabis use cessation. CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses contribute to understanding the genetic bases of substance use in a population with relatively higher rates of use compared to the general population.

ABSTRACT

Airway mucociliary clearance (MCC) is required for host defense and is often diminished in chronic lung diseases. Effective clearance depends upon coordinated actions of the airway epithelium and a mobile mucus layer. Dysregulation of the primary secreted airway mucin proteins, MUC5B and MUC5AC, is associated with a reduction in the rate of MCC; however, how other secreted proteins impact the integrity of the mucus layer and MCC remains unclear. We previously identified the gene Bpifb1/Lplunc1 as a regulator of airway MUC5B protein levels using genetic approaches. Here, we show that BPIFB1 is required for effective MCC in vivo using Bpifb1 knockout (KO) mice. Reduced MCC in Bpifb1 KO mice occurred in the absence of defects in epithelial ion transport or reduced ciliary beat frequency. Loss of BPIFB1 in vivo and in vitro altered biophysical and biochemical properties of mucus that have been previously linked to impaired MCC. Finally, we detected colocalization of BPIFB1 and MUC5B in secretory granules in mice and the protein mesh of secreted mucus in human airway epithelia cultures. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that BPIFB1 is an important component of the mucociliary apparatus in mice and a key component of the mucus protein network.NEW & NOTEWORTHY BPIFB1, also known as LPLUNC1, was found to regulate mucociliary clearance (MCC), a key aspect of host defense in the airway. Loss of this protein was also associated with altered biophysical and biochemical properties of mucus that have been previously linked to impaired MCC.
