ABSTRACT

Weed management is not yet environmentally, agronomically, economically and socially sustainable in olive orchards. It is necessary to study appropriate integrated weed management systems (IWMSs) based on the knowledge of weed population and effects of weeding practices over time. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different weed managements on seasonal floristic composition of a super high-density olive orchard, also exploiting the essential principles of an IWMS. Five weeding techniques were compared: chemical control (CHI), mowing (MEC), plastic (nonwoven tissue, TNT and polyethylene, PEN) and organic (with de-oiled olive pomace, DOP) mulching. Weed monitoring was carried out on six dates in a three-year period. The infestation of each of the main 18 weed species recorded (%) and the total infestation (%) on each monitoring date were determined. Results underlined that all weeding practices investigated in this multi-year study affected the floristic composition, weed characteristics (hemicryptophytes, cryptophytes and therophytes) and seed bank. TNT and PEN were the most effective methods for weed management. Particularly, total infestation coefficient was significantly lowest when plots were managed with TNT (13.91%) and PEN (14.38%) and highest for MEC (141.29%). However, DOP also significantly reduced infestation compared to CHI and MEC. Therefore, DOP could constitute an excellent strategy for weed management in super high-density olive groves, since it also has the possibility of distributing mulching materials in a mechanized way in field and can result in improvement of soil fertility and the possibility of valorizing waste. Further studies should be carried out to investigate the mechanism of action (physical and allelochemical) of de-oiled pomace or other organic agro-industrial materials and the recovery time of these mulching materials in super high-density olive orchards.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Mediterranean basin is home to centuries-old large olive trees; high-vigor cultivars are widespread, with training forms poorly adapted to mechanical harvesting by trunk/branch shakers. The significant quantity of leaves, the considerable tree height, and the presence of multiple dichotomous hanging branches reduce the transmission of vibrations applied by the branch-shaker machines. Thus, re-shaping pruning may improve the performance of this modern mechanical harvesting method by focusing on removing both the hanging branches and those forming dichotomies. The goal of this study was to evaluate the dynamic responses of large-sized olive trees to pruning (or not) through various field tests under different excitation forces. We hypothesized that more rational pruning could significantly increase vibration transmissions. Methods: To assess the transmission of vibrations, tests were conducted before and after the pruning on representative trees. Tri-axial accelerometers packed in a small titanium housing were used. Trees were assessed before and after the re-shaping pruning. This study reports the first data about the dynamic behavior of centuries-old tree skeletons, in the context of very large-sized olive trees, while taking into account the effects of two different vibrations application modes: a realistic one represented by the system vibration head-tree, originated when the gripper of a shaking machine wrapped and fastened the main branch of the olive trees, and a more speculative one, represented by a single impulse of a short-duration force originated by a hammer. Results: After pruning, spectral density increased 10 fold in the tertiary branches of pruned trees (ranging 1.0-10 m s-2) compared to that of not-pruned ones (ranging 0.1-1.0 m s-2) at frequency >50 Hz under vibration excitation. Moreover, vibrational decay times (120-150 ms) and amplitude (>10-1 m s-2) were higher under single-impulse excitation. Discussion: A more rational pruning applied to ancient large-sized olive trees significantly increased the vibration transmission under both impulse and vibratory excitation forces, without affected their typical "look". Moreover, these insights are helpful in turn in achieving maximum fruit-removal efficiency. These insights could be applied to various horticultural conditions which would improve the economic sustainability of monumental olive trees, a key portion of the Mediterranean landscape and cultural heritage.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate pathogenic bacterial contamination of the water-soil-plant system in potted olive trees irrigated with reclaimed wastewater. Desalinated water (DW) obtained by treating municipal wastewater (SW) and reclaimed water (RW) obtained by mixing SW with the brine (BR) produced by DESERT technology (tertiary treatment by ultrafiltration, active carbon and reverse osmosis) were used. Two different irrigation regimes were compared: full irrigation (FI) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI). During two irrigation seasons the concentrations of Escherichia coli, enterococci, spores of sulfite-reducing Clostridia (SRC) and Salmonella spp. were monitored in water, soil and fruit samples. Microbial concentrations in DW were always below the threshold for reuse in agriculture, while RW showed the highest level of contamination for all observed parameters. RDI management appeared to increase the soil content of SRC spores with respect to FI. Sporadically low SRC spore contamination was recorded in some fruits only in 2018, regardless of the irrigation source, probably because of accidental contamination during sampling or post-harvest handling. This study encourages the creation of a better regulatory framework reference, with specific guidelines for the use of RW as part of integrated environmental systems for the management of sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACT

The use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation is among the agronomic practices being increasingly valued by policy-makers, water planners, and regulators to pursue more sustainable resource management in many arid and semi-arid agricultural production areas worldwide. This practice can make additional supply available in water-scarce areas, provide crop nutrients, and reduce the disposal of wastewater to the environment, thus providing considerable agronomic and environmental benefits. However, the process for treated wastewater reuse is complex because of multiple interactions among technical, economic, environmental, and public health related aspects. In this context, the application of quantitative indices capturing agronomic, engineering, and environmental factors and their possible inter-relations enable to appraise the potential benefits and risks of treated wastewater reuse at individual project's scale and for regional policies. The present article describes a quantitative approach that utilizes a set of proposed indices to characterize various aspects affecting water and nutrient recovery for specific combinations between the characteristics of the treatment facility and the attributes of the irrigation district supplied with reclaimed water. The proposed index-based approach was tested on datasets collected for 11 pilot reuse schemes located in the Apulia region of southern Italy with the aim to evaluate the potential for water and nutrient recovery resulting from irrigation with reclaimed water. Results from the data analysis and interpretation showed that the proposed indices enabled to quantify the environmental benefits of irrigation with RW that leads to divert less freshwater from conventional sources and dispose less reclaimed water into natural water receptors, as well as the agronomic advantages of using RW, which can partially fulfill the irrigation and nutrient requirements for the supplied districts' service areas. Overall, the proposed set of indices can provide valuable information for the successful implementation of water reuse policies for irrigated agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Climate change is one of the main challenges facing the agricultural sector as it strives to meet global food needs. In arid and semiarid areas, the scarcity of water imposes the use of alternative sources - such as reclaimed water (RW) or desalinated water (DW) - and of deficit irrigation strategies, such as regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), in order to maintain productivity. The impact of both alternative water sources and RDI strategies on soil microbial communities in conjunction with the crop response has been little studied, and far less in fruit trees. Here, we evaluated the effects of the irrigation water quantity (RDI or the optimal water amount) and quality (DW or saline RW) on: i) the biomass, composition, and activity of the soil microbial community, and ii) the plant agro-physiological response at the level of the water status, nutrients, vegetative growth, and yield of almond trees. The DW-RDI treatment had a lower vegetative growth than the rest, reducing the nutrient requirements and increasing the contents of organic carbon and nitrogen in soil. This coincided with a significant increase in the bacterial biomass and enzyme activities in soil, as well as with a decrease in plant nutrient use efficiencies and yield. Irrigation with RW increased the fungal biomass. When there were no water restrictions (RW-FI), none of the plant agro-physiological parameters were affected; when RDI was applied (RW-RDI), the highest soil sodicity was reached and vegetative growth and yield were negatively affected, although the plant nutrient use efficiencies did not decrease as much as with DW-RDI. In addition, the plant nutrient use efficiencies were negatively correlated with the soil enzyme activities. These results improve our knowledge of the functioning of plant-soil interactions in Mediterranean crops subjected to different irrigation strategies.

ABSTRACT

The olive tree is one of the most important economic, cultural, and environmental resources for Italy, in particular for the Apulian region, where it shows a wide diversity. The increasing attention to the continuous loss of plant genetic diversity due to social, economic and climatic changes, has favored a renewed interest in strategies aimed at the recovery and conservation of these genetic resources. In the frame of a project for the valorization of the olive Apulian biodiversity (Re.Ger.O.P. project), 177 minor genotypes were recovered in different territories of the region. They were submitted to morphological, molecular, technological and phytosanitary status analysis in comparison with reference cultivars, then they were propagated and transferred in an ex situ field. All the available information was stored in an internal regional database including photographic documentation and geographic position. The work allowed obtaining information about the genetic diversity of Apulian germplasm, to clarify cases of homonymy and synonymy, to check the sanitary status, and to identify candidate genotypes useful both to set up breeding programs and to enrich the panel of olive cultivars available to farmers for commercial exploitation.

The 70% worldwide surface of olive orchards is irrigated. The evaluation of non-conventional water resources and water-saving techniques has gained importance during the last decades in arid and semiarid environments. This study evaluated the effects of irrigation with two water sources: low-cost water DEsalination and SEnsoR Technology (DESERT) desalinated water (DW) ECw ∼1 dS m-1) and reclaimed water (RW) (ECw ∼ 3 dS m-1) combined with two irrigation strategies: full irrigation (FI) (100% of ETc) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI, 50% of ETc) on fruit yield, ripening indices, and oil yield and quality of olive trees cv Arbosana planted in Mediterranean conditions. Our results showed that RW without water restrictions increased the fruit yield by 35% due to a slight increase in the fruit weight and, mainly, to a greater fruit set than the control trees; although this did not result in a higher oil yield (g tree-1) since the oil content per fruit dry weight was reduced. The RDI strategy did not decrease the fruit yield despite the fact that olive weight tended to decrease, and it increased the oil yield by ∼14.5%. The combination of both stresses (RW and RDI) neither decreased the fruit yield; however, it significantly reduced oil yield (25% less in 2018) since oil content per fruit dry weight was strongly reduced (40%) compared to control trees. Both RDI treatments, regardless water source, determined acidity levels in olive paste lower than in FI treatments; however, it reduced oil extractability and fatty yield. The finding about oil quality indicated that olive exposure to RW, regardless of the water amount, decreased oil quality mainly due to the reduction of oleic acid and the increase of C18:2/C18:3 ratio and peroxides; on the contrary, both RW and RDI improved the total polyphenols. In all cases, the parameters met the legislation. In short, with appropriate management, RW and RDI have great potential to manage oil olive production; nevertheless, studies subjected to long-term use of these techniques should be experienced to ensure the sustainability of oil yields and quality.

ABSTRACT

Information on the distribution of genetic variation is essential to preserve olive germplasm from erosion and to recover alleles lost through selective breeding. In addition, knowledge on population structure and genotype-phenotype associations is crucial to support modern olive breeding programs that must respond to new environmental conditions imposed by climate change and novel biotic/abiotic stressors. To further our understanding of genetic variation in the olive, we performed genotype-by-sequencing on a panel of 94 Italian olive cultivars. A reference-based and a reference-independent SNP calling pipeline generated 22,088 and 8,088 high-quality SNPs, respectively. Both datasets were used to model population structure via parametric and non parametric clustering. Although the two pipelines yielded a 3-fold difference in the number of SNPs, both described wide genetic variability among our study panel and allowed individuals to be grouped based on fruit weight and the geographical area of cultivation. Multidimensional scaling analysis on identity-by-state allele-sharing values as well as inference of population mixtures from genome-wide allele frequency data corroborated the clustering pattern we observed. These findings allowed us to formulate hypotheses about geographical relationships of Italian olive cultivars and to confirm known and uncover novel cases of synonymy.

ABSTRACT

The DESERT-prototype, a state-of-the-art compact combination of water treatment technologies based on filtration and solar-based renewable energy, was employed to reclaim water for agricultural irrigation. Water reclaimed through the DESERT-prototype (PW) from a secondary effluent of a wastewater treatment plant, as well as conventional irrigation water (CW) and the secondary effluent (SW) itself, were employed to cultivate baby romaine lettuces in a greenhouse in Murcia (Spain), by means of drip and sprinkler irrigation methods, thus establishing six treatments. Assessments of physicochemical and microbiological quality of irrigation water, as well as agronomic and microbiological quality of crops from all treatments, showed that results associated to PW complied in all cases with relevant standards and guidelines. In contrast, results linked to SW and CW presented certain non-compliance cases of water and crop microbiological quality. These assessments lead to conclude that the DESERT-prototype is an appropriate technology for safe water reclamation oriented to agricultural production, that can be complemented by a proper irrigation method in reaching safety targets.
