ABSTRACT

Chelators are widely used in conservation treatments to remove metal stains from marble, travertine, and limestone surfaces. In the current review the chemical aspects underlying the use of chelators for the removal of copper and iron stains from built heritage are described and clear criteria for the selection of the most efficient stain removal treatment are given. The main chelator structural features are outlined and the operating conditions for effective metal stain removal (pH, time of application, etc.) discussed, with a particular emphasis on the ability to form stable metal complexes, the high selectivity towards the metal that should be removed, and the high sustainability for the environment. Dense matrices often host chelators for higher effectiveness, and further research is required to clarify their role in the cleaning process. Then, relevant case studies of copper and iron stain removal are discussed. On these bases, the most effective chelators for copper and stain removal are indicated, providing chemists and conservation scientists with scientific support for conservation operations on stone works of art and opening the way to the synthesis of new chelators.

ABSTRACT

To correctly manage a collection of historical silks, it is important to detect if the yarn has been originally subjected to degumming. This process is generally applied to eliminate sericin; the obtained fiber is named soft silk, in contrast with hard silk which is unprocessed. The distinction between hard and soft silk gives both historical information and useful indications for informed conservation. With this aim, 32 samples of silk textiles from traditional Japanese samurai armors (15th-20th century) were characterized in a non-invasive way. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy has been previously used to detect hard silk, but data interpretation is challenging. To overcome this difficulty, an innovative analytical protocol based on external reflection FTIR (ER-FTIR) spectroscopy was employed, coupled with spectral deconvolution and multivariate data analysis. The ER-FTIR technique is rapid, portable, and widely employed in the cultural heritage field, but rarely applied to the study of textiles. The ER-FTIR band assignment for silk was discussed for the first time. Then, the evaluation of the OH stretching signals allowed for a reliable distinction between hard and soft silk. Such an innovative point of view, which exploits a "weakness" of FTIR spectroscopy-the strong absorption from water molecules-to indirectly obtain the results, can have industrial applications too.

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of hydrogels that are based on poly-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, p(HEMA), network semi-interpenetrated with linear polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was optimized in order to allow both a fast preparation and a high cleaning effectiveness of artistic surfaces. For this purpose, the synthesis parameters of the gel with PVP having a high molecular weight (1300 kDa) that were reported in the literature, were modified in terms of temperature, time, and crosslinker amount. In addition, the gel composition was modified by using PVP with different molecular weights, by changing the initiator and by adding maleic anhydride. The modified gels were characterized in terms of equilibrium water content (EWC), water uptake, conversion grade, and thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The cleaning effectiveness of the gels was studied through the removal of copper salts from laboratory-stained specimens. Cleaning materials were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Cleaning was assessed on marble specimens by color variation measurements. The gel synthesis is accelerated by using PVP 360 kDa. The addition of maleic anhydride in the p(HEMA)/PVP network allows the most effective removal of copper salt deposits from marble since it acts as a chelator towards copper ions.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the microstructure of mock-up mortar specimens for a historic environment, composed of different mixtures, was studied using mercury intrusion porosity (MIP) and microcomputed tomography (µCT), highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of both techniques. Porosity, sphericity, and pores size distribution were studied, evaluating changes according to mortar composition (aerial and hydraulic binders, quartz sand, and crushed limestone aggregate). The µCT results were rendered using 3D visualization software, which provides complementary information for the interpretation of the data obtained using 3D data-analysis software. Moreover, µCT contributes to the interpretation of MIP results of mortars. On the other hand, MIP showed significant ink-bottle effects in lime and cement mortars samples that should be taken into account when interpreting the results. Moreover, the MIP results highlighted how gypsum mortar samples display a porosity distribution that is best studied using this technique. This multi-analytical approach provides important insights into the interpretation of the porosimetric data obtained. This is crucial in the characterization of mortars and provides key information for the study of building materials and cultural heritage conservation.

Copper complexes with different ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, EDTA, ammonium citrate tribasic, TAC, and alanine, ALA) were studied in aqueous solutions and hydrogels with the aim of setting the optimal conditions for copper stain removal from marble by agar gels, with damage minimization. The stoichiometry and stability of copper complexes were monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and the symmetry of Cu(II) centers in the different gel formulations was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Cleaning effectiveness in optimized conditions was verified on marble laboratory specimens through color variations and by determining copper on gels by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Two copper complexes with TAC were identified, one having the known stoichiometry 1:1, and the other 1:2, Cu(TAC)2, never observed before. The stability of all the complexes at different pH was observed to increase with pH. At pH 10.0, the gel's effectiveness in removing copper salts from marble was the highest in the presence of ALA, followed by EDTA, TAC, and pure agar gel. Limited damage to the marble surface was observed when gels with added EDTA and TAC were employed, whereas agar gel with ALA was determined to be the most efficient and safe cleaning material.

ABSTRACT

Nine black powders found in Pompeii houses in three different types of bronze vessels (cylindrical theca atramentaria, unguentaries, and aryballoi) were characterized in order to assess a correspondence between the composition and the type of vessel and, possibly, to verify if these powders were inks or not. For the compositional characterization, a multi-analytical approach was adopted, which involved the use of scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and pyrolysis GC/MS. Powders contained in cylindrical theca atramentaria form a homogeneous group, and their organic and inorganic compositions suggest that they were writing inks, while powders contained in unguentaries and aryballoi could have had several different uses, including writing inks and cosmetics. Furthermore, the composition profile of the powders found in cylindrical cases shows that, at 79 AD: , in Pompeii, carbon-based inks were still used for writing, and iron gall inks had not been introduced yet.

ABSTRACT

The possibility of controlling the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles by tailoring their crystalline structure and morphology is a current topic of great interest. In this study, a broad variety of well-faceted particles with different phase compositions, sizes, and shapes have been obtained from concentrated TiOCl2 solutions by systematically changing temperature, pH, and duration of the hydrothermal treatment. The guide to select the suitable experimental conditions was provided by thermodynamic modeling based on available thermochemical data. By combining the results of TEM, HRTEM, XRD, density, and specific surface area measurements, a complete structural and morphological characterization of the particles was performed. Correlation between the photocatalytic activity in the UV photodegradation of phenol solutions and the particle size was established. Prismatic rutile particles with length/width ratio around 5 and breadth of 60-100 nm showed the highest activity. The surface chemistry of the particles was also investigated. Treatments that decrease the surface acidity, such as washing the powders with ammonia solution and/or calcining at 400 degrees C, have detrimental effect on photocatalytic activity. The overall results suggest correlation between particle morphology and photocatalytic activity and indicate that both electron-hole recombination and adsorption at the surface can be rate-controlling processes. The systematic approach presented in this study demonstrates that a substantial improvement of the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 can be achieved by a careful design of the particle morphology and the control of the surface chemistry.

ABSTRACT

Ce-doped borosilicate (BSG), phosphosilicate (PSG), and borophosphosilicate (BPSG) glasses (B:P:Si molar ratios 8:0:92, 0:8:92, and 8:8:84; Ce:Si molar ratio 1 x 10(-)(4) to 1 x 10(-)(2)) were prepared by the sol-gel method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), (31)P, (29)Si, and (11)B magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-vis absorption investigations demonstrated that, in PSG and BPSG, Ce(3+) ions interact with phosphoryl, [O=PO(3/2)], metaphosphate, [O=PO(2/ 2)O](-), and pyrophosphate, [O=PO(1/2)O(2)](2)(-), groups, linked to a silica network. This inhibits both CeO(2) segregation and oxidation of isolated Ce(3+) ions to Ce(4+), up to Ce:Si = 5 x 10(-)(3). In BSG, neither trigonal [BO(3/2)] nor tetrahedral [BO(4/2)](-) boron units coordinate cerium; thus, Ce(3+) oxidation occurs even at Ce:Si = 1 x 10(-)(4), as in pure silica glass (SG). The homogeneous rare-earth dispersion in the host matrix and the stabilization of the Ce(3+) oxidation state enhanced the intensity of the photoluminescence emission in PSG and BPSG with respect to BSG and SG. The energy of the Ce(3+) emission band in PSG and BPSG matrixes agrees with the phosphate environment of the rare earth.

ABSTRACT

The radicalization of unbleached lignocellulosic fibers obtained from thermomechanical (TMP) and chemothermomechanical (CTMP) pulps was performed in heterogeneous phase by reaction with dioxygen in the presence of N,N'-ethylenebis(salicylideneiminato)cobalt(II), [Co(salen)], as catalyst. Phenoxy cobalt radicals immobilized in fibers were observed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy; their amount depends on the fiber swelling induced by reaction medium. The absolute concentration of such radicals in fibers, about 10(16) spin/g, reaches values 10 times higher than that of phenoxy radicals formed in similar oxidative reactions catalyzed by laccase. The generation of phenoxy cobalt radicals in fibers was related to structural changes of lignin units, detected by mono- and bidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance ((13)C NMR and 2D-HSQC) investigations, and to morphological modifications in fibers observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

ABSTRACT

The mechanism of NO interaction with nanosized Ru(Pd,Pt)-doped SnO(2) was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance, Mössbauer, and electric resistance measurements. Three steps were proposed for the reaction between the semiconductor oxide and the gaseous component: (i) the formation of bielectronic oxygen vacancies (V(o)) in SnO(2); (ii) their single-ionization (V(o)(*)) with injection of electrons into the SnO(2) conduction band; (iii) the subsequent transfer of electrons from V(o)(*) to [Ru(Pd,Pt)](4+). The last process induces the formation of further oxygen vacancies which reduce the transition metal centers to lower oxidation states; the redox processes is enhanced and the electrical resistance in transition metal-doped SnO(2) is stronger modified with respect to the undoped material.
