ABSTRACT

Knowledge of species' functional traits is essential for understanding biodiversity patterns, predicting the impacts of global environmental changes, and assessing the efficiency of conservation measures. Bats are major components of mammalian diversity and occupy a variety of ecological niches and geographic distributions. However, an extensive compilation of their functional traits and ecological attributes is still missing. Here we present EuroBaTrait 1.0, the most comprehensive and up-to-date trait dataset covering 47 European bat species. The dataset includes data on 118 traits including genetic composition, physiology, morphology, acoustic signature, climatic associations, foraging habitat, roost type, diet, spatial behaviour, life history, pathogens, phenology, and distribution. We compiled the bat trait data obtained from three main sources: (i) a systematic literature and dataset search, (ii) unpublished data from European bat experts, and (iii) observations from large-scale monitoring programs. EuroBaTrait is designed to provide an important data source for comparative and trait-based analyses at the species or community level. The dataset also exposes knowledge gaps in species, geographic and trait coverage, highlighting priorities for future data collection.

ABSTRACT

Multiple helminth species commonly co-occur within mammals and their interactions may negatively affect the survival and breeding success of their hosts. However, it has been difficult to prove competition or mutualism between co-infesting helminths in field studies of wild mammals. The sinus cavities of European polecats (Mustela putorius) can be parasitised by the trematode Troglotrema acutum and the nematode Skrjabingylus nasicola and both helminths can co-occur within hosts. While both parasites can damage the host's bone structure and cause severe pathologies, their impact on host body condition is unclear. It is also unknown whether both parasites interact and how this might affect cranial damage and host body condition. We examined 515 fresh polecat skulls for the presence of both helminths and measured the hosts' amount of kidney perirenal fat as a measure of body condition. Our results demonstrated that, in addition to a host-intrinsic fixed factor (sex) and random factors accounting for spatial and temporal stochasticity, the helminths influenced each other's presence. Infestation with T. acutum increased the probability of catching S. nasicola with increasing age of the host, while males already infested with S. nasicola were more likely to become infested with T. acutum than females infested with the nematode. While we speculate that both effects resulted from parasite-induced behavioural alterations (increased foot consumption), it is not clear why, in the latter case, this effect would be stronger in males than females. We showed that the abundances of both parasites had significant positive effect on the likely presence of skull damage and a significant negative effect on the predicted presence of kidney fat. Given the evolutionary arms race that both host-parasite systems have undergone, it appears unlikely that either helminth played a significant factor in the population decline of the polecat in Europe.

ABSTRACT

Efforts to expand protected area networks are limited by the costs of managing protected sites. Volunteers who donate labor to help manage protected areas can help defray these costs. However, volunteers may be willing to donate more labor to some protected areas than others. Understanding variation in volunteering effort would enable conservation organizations to account for volunteer labor in their strategic planning. We examined variation in volunteering effort across 59 small protected areas managed by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, a regional conservation nonprofit in the United Kingdom. Three surveys of volunteering effort reveal consistent patterns of variation across protected areas. Using the most detailed of these sources, a survey of site managers, we estimate that volunteers provided 3200 days of labor per year across the 59 sites with a total value exceeding that of paid staff time spent managing the sites. The median percentage by which volunteer labor supplements management costs on the sites was 36%. Volunteering effort and paid management costs are positively correlated, after controlling for the effect of site area. We examined how well a range of characteristics of the protected areas and surrounding communities explain variation in volunteering effort. Protected areas that are larger have been protected for longer and that are located near to denser conurbations experience greater volunteering effort. Together these factors explain 38% of the observed variation in volunteering effort across protected areas.

ABSTRACT

Systematic conservation planning provides a structured, target-driven approach to ensuring the long-term maintenance of biodiversity. However, reviews of how well the steps of such a planning process are applied in different regions are scant; some steps may be implemented although there is no formal systematic conservation planning process taking place. Here we conduct such a review for Europe. Taking in turn the six recognized steps of systematic conservation planning, for this region: (i) The availability of data on biodiversity remains a significant constraint on conservation planning because, although species occurrences have often been better mapped in Europe than elsewhere, there is a continuing mismatch between the spatial resolution at which data coverage is adequate and that of habitat fragmentation. (ii) Although there are important legal frameworks for conservation planning, explicit quantitative goals for the representation and persistence of biodiversity are largely lacking. (iii) Assessment of the effectiveness of existing protected area systems is patchy and rather ill developed, with a substantial gulf between the work being conducted in more academic and policy-oriented arenas. (iv) Nonetheless, particularly through the Natura 2000 process, there has been an extraordinary program to select additional protected areas. (v) Although it has taken longer than originally envisaged, this program is resulting in a substantial expansion of the protected area system. (vi) There are significant concerns over the extent to which existing protected area systems can maintain their biodiversity values, particularly given the small size of many of these areas and likely impacts of climate change.
