ABSTRACT

The facial nerve plays a crucial role in facial expression and sensory functions, with irreversible injuries often demanding rehabilitation therapies, with hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis (HFA) being one of the treatment options. This systematic review assessed different HFA techniques for facial paralysis, particularly post vestibular schwannoma resection, focusing on effectiveness and associated morbidities. Fifteen studies, comprising a case series and a retrospective cohort, were analyzed. Techniques included end-to-end, split, side-to-side, end-to-side, and jump interpositional graft hypoglossal-facial anastomosis (JIGHFA). Positive outcomes were observed with end-to-end and side-to-side techniques, while the split technique and JIGHFA showed promise. Comparative analyses favored the 'end-to-side' approach. Shorter intervals between surgery and HFA correlated with improved outcomes. Methodological variations highlight the need for prospective studies with standardized methodologies for robust evidence and informed decision-making on optimal HFA techniques.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background The SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has led to radical transformation in social, economic, and healthcare systems. This may lead to profound indirect consequences on clinical presentation and management of patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. Objectives The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation (STEMI), in two tertiary reference hospitals during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and compare them with patients admitted in the previous year. Methods We analyzed data from a multicenter STEMI registry from reference centers in the South Region of Brazil from March 2019 to May 2021. The beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak was considered to be March 2020 and compared to the same period in 2019. Only patients with STEMI submitted to primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were included in the analysis. Mortality rates were compared with chi-square test. All hypothesis tests had a two-sided significance level of 5%. Results A total of 1169 patients admitted with STEMI were enrolled in our registry, 635 of whom were admitted during the pandemic period. The mean age of our sample was 61.6 (± 12.4) years, and 66.7% of patients were male. Pain-to-door time and door-to-balloon time were longer during the pandemic period. However, there was no difference in mortality rates or major adverse cardiovascular outcomes (MACE). Conclusions We observed a stable incidence of STEMI cases in our registry during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak with higher pain-to-door time and door-to-balloon time, without any influence on mortality rates however.

ABSTRACT

Alopecia areata is managed with oral corticosteroids, which has known side effects for patients. Given that a topical application of formulations containing a corticoid and a substance controlling hair loss progression could reduce or eliminate such adverse effects and increase the patient's adherence to the treatment, this study prepares polymeric and lipidic nanoparticles (PNPs and NLCs) to co-entrap minoxidil and betamethasone and compares the follicular drug delivery provided by topical application of these nanoparticles. The prepared PNPs loaded 99.1 ± 13.0% minoxidil and 70.2 ± 12.8% betamethasone, while the NLCs entrapped 99.4 ± 0.1 minoxidil and 80.7 ± 0.1% betamethasone. PNPs and NLCs presented diameters in the same range, varying from 414 ± 10 nm to 567 ± 30 nm. The thermal analysis revealed that the production conditions favor the solubilization of the drugs in the nanoparticles, preserving their stability. In in vitro permeation studies with porcine skin, PNPs provided a 2.6-fold increase in minoxidil penetration into the follicular casts compared to the control and no remarkable difference in terms of betamethasone; in contrast, NLCs provided a significant (specifically, a tenfold) increase in minoxidil penetration into the hair follicles compared to the control, and they delivered higher concentrations of betamethasone in hair follicles than both PNPs and the control. Neither PNPs nor NLCs promoted transdermal permeation of the drugs to the receptor solution, which should favor a topical therapy. Furthermore, both nanoparticles targeted approximately 50% of minoxidil delivery to the follicular casts and NLCs targeted 74% of betamethasone delivery to the hair follicles. In conclusion, PNPs and NLCs are promising drug delivery systems for enhancing follicular targeting of drugs, but NLCs showed superior performance for lipophilic drugs.

ABSTRACT

Macrophages are important effectors of inflammation resolution that contribute to the elimination of pathogens and apoptotic cells and restoration of homeostasis. Pre-clinical studies have evidenced the anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving actions of GILZ (glucocorticoid-induced leucine zipper). Here, we evaluated the role of GILZ on the migration of mononuclear cells under nonphlogistic conditions and Escherichia coli-evoked peritonitis. TAT-GILZ (a cell-permeable GILZ-fusion protein) injection into the pleural cavity of mice induced monocyte/macrophage influx alongside increased CCL2, IL-10 and TGF-ß levels. TAT-GILZ-recruited macrophages showed a regulatory phenotype, exhibiting increased expression of CD206 and YM1. During the resolving phase of E. coli-induced peritonitis, marked by an increased recruitment of mononuclear cells, lower numbers of these cells and CCL2 levels were found in the peritoneal cavity of GILZ-deficient mice (GILZ-/-) when compared to WT. In addition, GILZ-/- showed higher bacterial loads, lower apoptosis/efferocytosis counts and a lower number of macrophages with pro-resolving phenotypes. TAT-GILZ accelerated resolution of E. coli-evoked neutrophilic inflammation, which was associated with increased peritoneal numbers of monocytes/macrophages, enhanced apoptosis/efferocytosis counts and bacterial clearance through phagocytosis. Taken together, we provided evidence that GILZ modulates macrophage migration with a regulatory phenotype, inducing bacterial clearance and accelerating the resolution of peritonitis induced by E. coli.

ABSTRACT

Dacarbazine (DTIC) is a chemotherapeutic drug currently used for the systemic treatment of melanomas. Considering the easy access to these tumors, a topical route of drug administration could provide a more comfortable and less toxic treatment. However, DTIC quantification aiming at the design of topical formulations is challenging, pondering all the interferents present in the drug samples recovered from the skin. Hence, this work intended to validate a selective chromatographic method for DTIC determination in skin permeation studies. A reversed-phase C18 column was used as a stationary phase, and gradient elution of a mobile phase consisting of methanol and pH 6.5 sodium phosphate monohydrate buffer (0.01 mol/L) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min was implemented. DTIC was detected at 364 nm. The method was selective against skin interferents, linear (r = 0.9995) in a concentration range of 1.0-15.0 µg/mL, precise with an overall variation coefficient lower than 3.8%, accurate achieving recovery from the skin layers within 91-112%, and sensitive for the proposed application (detection limit = 0.10 µg/ mL, quantification limit = 0.30 µg/mL). Furthermore, the analytical method was successfully tested in in vitro skin permeation studies. In conclusion, the developed method is appropriate for DTIC analysis from the skin sample matrix.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and factors associated with serum vitamin D levels in adult women with class II/III obesity. METHODS: We analysed baseline data from 128 adult women with class II/III obesity i.e. BMI ≥35 kg/m2 who participated in the DieTBra clinical trial. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, sun exposure, sunscreen, dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D, menopause, diseases, medication, and body composition data were analysed using multiple linear regression. RESULTS: 128 women had mean BMI 45.53 ± 6.36, mean age 39.7 ± 8.75 kg/m2 and serum vitamin D 30.02 ng/ml ± 9.80. Vitamin D deficiency was 14.01%. There was no association between serum vitamin D levels and BMI, body fat percentage, total body fat and waist circumference. Age group (p = 0.004), sun exposure/day (p = 0.072), use of sunscreen (p = 0.168), inadequate calcium intake (p = 0.030), BMI (p = 0.192), menopause (p = 0.029) and lipid-lowering drugs (p = 0.150) were included in the multiple linear regression. The following remained associated with low serum vitamin D: being 40-49 years (p = 0.003); ≥50 years of age (p = 0.020) and inadequate calcium intake (p = 0.027). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was lower than expected. Lifestyle, sun exposure and body composition were not associated. Age over 40 years and inadequate calcium intake were significantly associated with low serum vitamin D levels.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of B vitamins and vitamin D therapy in improving the standard treatment of depression and anxiety disorders. We also aimed to gather the evidence supporting the recommendations for supplementation in clinical practice. METHODS: Performed between March 2020 and September 2021, the main inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), with patients ≥ 18 years old, both sexes, fulfilling target diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), or mild to severe depressive and anxiety symptoms. In addition, the RCTs were included if the scales to assess the severity of the symptoms were standardized rating scales in psychiatric. Trials that reported diagnoses of schizophrenia, perinatal depression, bipolar depression, sleep disorders, eating disorders, cancer, and multiple sclerosis in association with any of the mentioned diagnoses were excluded. RESULTS: We identified 20 RCTs that matched all eligibility criteria, totaling 2,256 subjects, diagnosed with MDD, GAD, and depressive or anxiety symptoms. Supplementation with folic acid or L-methylfolate, B1, B12 or methylcobalamin, and vitamin D (in different doses and study duration) significantly decreased depression score scales by increasing response to standard pharmacological treatment or as monotherapy, including partial or complete remission. As for anxiety symptoms, the availability of results is limited to adjuvant vitamin D therapy. DISCUSSION: B vitamins and vitamin D associated with other compounds also showed significant results, so the improvement in symptoms cannot be attributed strictly to those. Our results suggest that intervention with B vitamins and/or vitamin D may be an effective and well-tolerated adjuvant strategy for improving the symptoms of depression and anxiety, according to the patient's clinical status and nutritional biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Boron (B) and silicon (Si) are fundamental for brassica nutrition, and in some cases, they have potential as an insecticide. Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), one of the most economically important agricultural pests, is difficult to control due to the resistance to insecticides and the absence of alternative control methods. RESULTS: Cauliflower leaves sprayed with Si and B showed a higher concentration of the beneficial element and micronutrient, respectively. When evaluating the firmness of the cauliflower leaves, it was found that the plants with leaf sprayings of Si and B did not differ statistically from each other. However, they showed an increase in firmness, in relation to the plants of the control treatment. Leaf spraying of Si and B on cauliflower did not influence the number of eggs/female. The attractiveness index showed that both Si and B applications stimulated the presence of second instar larvae, being more stimulating in relation to the control treatment. However, the use of Si and B in isolation showed a positive result, since it caused high mortality in diamondback moth larvae compared to the control treatment. CONCLUSION: The application of both foliar fertilizers positively affects the attractiveness index of the larvae, being attractive; however, both Si and B caused high mortality (~80%). The results showed that Si and B have the potential to control P. xylostella and serve as a basis for alternative pest management in brassica crops. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Lipophosphoglycan (LPG), the major Leishmania glycoconjugate, induces pro-inflammatory/immunosuppressive innate immune responses. Here, we evaluated functional/biochemical LPG properties from six Leishmania amazonensis strains from different hosts/clinical forms. LPGs from three strains (GV02, BA276, and LV79) had higher pro-inflammatory profiles for most of the mediators, including tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6. For this reason, glycoconjugates from all strains were biochemically characterized and had polymorphisms in their repeat units. They consisted of three types: type I, repeat units devoid of side chains; type II, containing galactosylated side chains; and type III, containing glucosylated side chains. No relationship was observed between LPG type and the pro-inflammatory properties. Finally, to evaluate the susceptibility against antileishmanial agents, two strains with high (GV02, BA276) and one with low (BA336) pro-inflammatory activity were selected for chemotherapeutic tests in THP-1 cells. All analyzed strains were susceptible to amphotericin B (AmB) but displayed various responses against miltefosine (MIL) and glucantime (GLU). The GV02 strain (canine visceral leishmaniasis) had the highest IC50 for MIL (3.34 µM), whereas diffuse leishmaniasis strains (BA276 and BA336) had a higher IC50 for GLU (6.87-12.19 mM). The highest IC50 against MIL shown by the GV02 strain has an impact on clinical management. Miltefosine is the only drug approved for dog treatment in Brazil. Further studies into drug susceptibility of L. amazonensis strains are warranted, especially in areas where dog infection by this species overlaps with those caused by Leishmania infantum.

INTRODUCTION: The subgemmal neurogenous plaque is a well-defined subepithelial neural plexus associated with taste buds, located within foliate, fungiform, and circumvallate papillae of the human tongue, that is poorly known by dentists and medical professionals. The hyperplasia of subgemmal neurogenous plaque may occur and it manifests as a papule, nodule, plaque, or ulcer in the lateral posterior border of the tongue inducing the overdiagnosis of reactive, cystic, or neoplastic lesions. The aims of this study are to report a case of a patient with subgemmal neurogenous plaque, and to provide a comprehensive review of other subgemmal neurogenous plaque in the posterolateral tongue with challenging diagnosis. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 28-year-old female with a little yellowish nodule, asymptomatic, located in posterior left lateral border of the tongue. Accurate diagnosis was based in excisional biopsy and histopathological examination showing a superficial neurofibroma-like pattern, and a neuroma-like in the deep zone. The final diagnosis was subgemmal neurogenous plaque. DISCUSSION: The subgemmal neurogenous plaque has an erythematous nodule or papule in the border of the tongue that are frequently misdiagnosis as foliate papillitis and lymphoepithelial cyst. Despite the subgemmal neurogenous plaque be considered a normal structure, the biopsy is recommended for differential diagnosis with other benign or malignant lesions in tongue. CONCLUSION: Contributing with the dentists and medical professionals in their clinical practice, we reviewed the literature and added a case of subgemmal neurogenous plaque in the posterolateral region of the tongue, highlighting the importance of its recognition to avoid misdiagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. While inflammation is a host protective response that ensures bacterial clearance, a finely regulated response is necessary to prevent bystander tissue damage. Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced leucine zipper (GILZ) is a GC-induced protein with anti-inflammatory and proresolving bioactions, yet the therapeutical role of GILZ in infectious diseases remains unexplored. Herein, we investigate the role and effects of GILZ during acute lung injury (ALI) induced by LPS and Streptococcus pneumoniae infection. GILZ deficient mice (GILZ-/-) presented more severe ALI, characterized by increased inflammation, decreased macrophage efferocytosis and pronounced lung damage. In contrast, pulmonary inflammation, and damage were attenuated in WT mice treated with TAT-GILZ fusion protein. During pneumococcal pneumonia, TAT-GILZ reduced neutrophilic inflammation and prevented the associated lung damage. There was also enhanced macrophage efferocytosis and bacterial clearance in TAT-GILZ-treated mice. Mechanistically, TAT-GILZ enhanced macrophage phagocytosis of pneumococcus, which was lower in GILZ-/- macrophages. Noteworthy, early treatment with TAT-GILZ rescued 30% of S. pneumoniae-infected mice from lethal pneumonia. Altogether, we present evidence that TAT-GILZ enhances host resilience and resistance to pneumococcal pneumonia by controlling pulmonary inflammation and bacterial loads leading to decreased lethality. Exploiting GILZ pathways holds promise for the treatment of severe respiratory infections.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to use microscopic and molecular techniques to evaluate the effects of a single session of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the alveolar repair process after tooth extraction in rats. The study sample included 84 rats divided into four groups, as follows: a) Control - untreated socket; b) Laser - socket treated using photobiomodulation; c) TBO - socket treated with topic application of the photosensitizer agent, toluidine blue O (TBO); and d) aPDT - socket treated with TBO and laser irradiation. An additional rat was used for thermal mapping during socket irradiation. The animals were euthanatized at 6, 15, and 28 days after unilateral extraction of the upper incisor. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the connective and bone tissues, blood clot, blood vessel, and inflammatory infiltrate were performed, and real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to study the expression of genes (collagen type I, osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase [ALP], runt-related transcription factor 2 [RUNX2], and vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF]) involved in the bone healing process. No statistically significant differences in microscopic and molecular outcomes were observed between the groups (p > 0.05). A positive correlation was seen to exist between blood clot and VEGF (p = 0.000), and a negative correlation was observed between bone tissue and ALP (p = 0.028) and blood vessel and VEGF (p = 0.018). A single session of aPDT in the dental extraction site did not influence the alveolar repair process in rats.

Abstract Aim: This study aimed to investigate the presence of women coaches in table tennis certification courses carried out by national and international federations. Methods: We carried out an analysis on documents extracted from the official websites of the Brazilian Table Tennis Confederation (CBTM) and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Those documents presented the certificated coaches by each organization. We also collected information about the location of the coach according to the five macro-regions of Brazil. Results: We found a greater frequency of men (89.3%) compared to women (10.7%) in ITTF courses and, in Brazil, we also found a higher rate of men (83.7%) compared to women (16.3%) certified by CBTM. We found no increase in women's participation in ITFF courses over the years. In both national and international courses, most of the women coaches (international = 36%; national = 46.4%) were from the Southeast, while few women coaches were found in the Northeast and North. Conclusion: The findings of our study reveal that the training process of table tennis coaches is still mostly occupied by men. We also found a discrepancy between the macro-regions of the country where most women coaches are from the Southeast. CBTM managed to almost double the women's representation among coaches (from 10.7% to 16%) due to the policy that has been adopted in an attempt to increase the number of women in the sport. We highlight the importance of gender equality policies to improve women coaches' participation in table tennis.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of two nonpharmacological interventions-traditional Brazilian diet (DieTBra), and extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)-in terms of the reduction in pain and pain intensity in individuals with severe obesity. We conducted a 12-week parallel randomized clinical trial with 149 individuals (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m2) who were randomized into three groups: supplementation with EVOO (n = 50), DieTBra (n = 49), and EVOO + DieTBra (n = 50). Of the total, 133 individuals with a mean BMI of 46.04 kg/m2 completed the study. By the end of the follow-up, there was a reduction in severe pain in the EVOO + DieTBra group (p = 0.003). There was a significant reduction in severe pain in the EVOO + DieTBra group (-22.7%); pain in the wrist and hand (-14.1%), upper back (-26.9%), and knees (-18.4%) in the DieTBra group; and reduction in hip pain (-11.1%) with EVOO consumption. We conclude that EVOO and DieTBra, either alone or in combination, are effective interventions to reduce pain intensity and pain in different regions in individuals with severe obesity, and have great potential for clinical application.

ABSTRACT

The rate of aging has increased globally during recent decades and has led to a rising burden of age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). At the molecular level, epigenetic modifications have been shown recently to alter gene expression during the life course and impair cellular function. In this regard, several CVD risk factors, such as lifestyle and environmental factors, have emerged as key factors in epigenetic modifications within the cardiovascular system. In this study, we attempted to summarized recent evidence related to epigenetic modification, inflammation response, and CVD in older adults as well as the effect of lifestyle modification as a preventive strategy in this age group. Recent evidence showed that lifestyle and environmental factors may affect epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, histone acetylation, and miRNA expression. Several substances or nutrients such as selenium, magnesium, curcumin, and caffeine (present in coffee and some teas) could regulate epigenetics. Similarly, physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, air pollutants, psychological stress, and shift working are well-known modifiers of epigenetic patterns. Understanding the exact ways that lifestyle and environmental factors could affect the expression of genes could help to influence the time of incidence and severity of aging-associated diseases. This review highlighted that a healthy lifestyle throughout the life course, such as a healthy diet rich in fibers, vitamins, and essential elements, and specific fatty acids, adequate physical activity and sleep, smoking cessation, and stress control, could be useful tools in preventing epigenetic changes that lead to impaired cardiovascular function.

ABSTRACT

The association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic syndrome (MS) in severe obesity is unclear and controversial. We analyzed serum and dietary vitamin D and their association with MS in 150 adults with class II and III obesity (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2) from the DieTBra Trial (NCT02463435). MS parameters were high fasting blood glucose, low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides, elevated waist circumference, and hypertension. Vitamin D deficiency was considered as a level < 20 ng/mL. We performed multivariate Poisson regression adjusted for sociodemographic and lifestyle variables. The prevalence of serum vitamin D deficiency was 13.3% (mean 29.9 ± 9.4 ng/mL) and dietary vitamin D median was 51.3 IU/day. There were no significant associations between vitamin D, serum, and diet and sociodemographic variables, lifestyle, and class of obesity. Serum vitamin D deficiency was associated with age ≥ 50 years (p = 0.034). After a fully adjusted multivariate Poisson regression, MS and its parameters were not associated with serum or dietary vitamin D, except for lower HDL, which was associated with serum vitamin D deficiency (PR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.52-0.97; p = 0.029). Severe obese individuals had a low prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, which was not associated with MS.

ABSTRACT

Alopecia is a clinical condition related to hair loss that can significantly affect both male and female adults' quality of life. Despite the high market demand, only few drugs are currently approved for alopecia treatment. Topical formulations still bring drawbacks, such as scalp irritation with frequent use, and low drug absorption to the site of action, which limits the efficacy. The most recent research points out that different formulation technology could circumvent the aforementioned flaws. Such technology includes incorporation of drugs in rigid or deformable nanoparticles, strategies involving physical, energetical and mechanical techniques, such as iontophoresis, sonophoresis, microneedling, and the use of solid effervescent granules to be hydrated at the moment of application in the scalp. In this paper, the progress of current research on topical formulations dedicated to the treatment of alopecia is reviewed and discussed.

ABSTRACT

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus, 1758), is one of the main pests of brassicas, and various insecticides, such as indoxacarb, are used to control it. However, frequent insecticide applications favor the selection of resistant individuals. Thus, the residual and sublethal effects of indoxacarb in two populations of P. xylostella, one collected in the field (FP) and one from the laboratory (LP), were evaluated and compared. The objective of this research was to investigate the toxicity of indoxacarb at residual and sublethal levels in a field population of P. xylostella from Brazil and a population from the laboratory. Leaf-dip bioassays showed high toxicity, with LC50 values after 48 h of 3.7 and 6.9 mg/liter for the LP and FP, respectively. Sublethal effects were indicated by significant reduction in the survival of larvae, pupae, and offspring. There was an increase in foliar consumption and a decrease in adult survival in the LP, and a decrease in fecundity in the FP. For the LP and FP population, the mean values for R0, rm, and λ for the control treatment were significantly higher than for the treatment groups (CL15 and CL25). Exposure of larvae to sublethal indoxacarb concentrations significantly reduced larval and pupal survival. Larval and pupal survival decreased as the indoxacarb concentration increased. Fecundity was significantly lower for the FP at LC15 (96.2 eggs per female) and LC25 (69.2 eggs per female) concentrations compared with the other treatments.

O uso tópico de Propionato de Clobetasol 0,05% em solução aquosa para lesões ulceradas na cavidade bucal é pouco divulgado nacionalmente e tem sido pouco citado em traba-lhos científicos a respeito de sua eficácia, tempo de regressão da lesão e efeitos adversos. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar retrospectivamente prontuários de pacientes que foram tratados de lesões ulceradas através do uso do Propionato de Clobetasol 0,05%, no ambulatório de estomatopatologia de uma Instituição, a fim de investigar sua eficácia. Foram selecionados prontuários de pacientes que apresentaram a alteração fundamental ulcerada ou erosiva e que fizeram o uso tópico de Propionato de Clobetasol 0,05%. A aná-lise retrospectiva foi feita por um examinador, que fez a seleção da amostra seguindo os critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Foram coletadas as informações: Idade, gênero, diagnós-tico da alteração; quantidade de lesão, tempo de uso, evolução da lesão, tempo exato de regressão e presença de reações adversas. Foram incluídos 17 prontuários, dos quais cinco eram de pacientes com lesões erosivas de líquen plano, três úlceras traumáticas, três lesões liquenóides, dois eritemas multiformes, uma alergia a lactose, uma afta e uma gengivite descamativa. Todos os casos apresentaram resolução da sintomatologia, porém as altera-ções clínicas permaneceram em seis casos, embora mais leves e assintomáticas. Não foi ob-servada nenhuma reação adversa registrada no prontuário. A análise estatística não apontou associação em relação ao sexo (teste Exato de Fisher; p=0,49; p>0,05). Não foi observada diferença estatística significativa na frequência das lesões (teste exato de Fisher; p= 0,85; p>0,05). O uso do Propionato de Clobetasol 0,05% prescrito por até cinco dias se mostrou eficaz no tratamento de lesões ulceradas da mucosa bucal, principalmente para o alívio sintomático, além disso, não revelou efeitos adversos.


The treatment of ulcerated lesions of the oral cavity is usually carried out using topical analgesic drugs, anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, and alcohol-free oral antiseptics. The topical use of 0.05% Clobetasol Propionate in aqueous solution for ulcerated lesions in the oral cavity is little publicized nationally and little mentioned in scientific studies regarding its effectiveness, lesion regression time, and adverse effects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the medical records of patients who were treated for ulcerated or erosive lesions, using Clobetasol Propionate 0.05%, in the stomatology clinic of an institution to investigate its effectiveness. Medical records of patients who presented the fundamental ulcerated alteration and made topical use of 0.05% Clobetasol Propionate were selected. An examiner selected the sample following the inclusion and exclusion cri-teria and performed the retrospective analysis. The types of information collected were age, gender, diagnosis of the disorder, amount of injury, time of use, the evolution of the injury, exact time of regression, and presence of adverse reactions. A total of 17 medical records were included, of which five were from patients with erosive lichen planus lesions, three traumatic ulcers, three lichenoid lesions, two multiform erythema, one lactose allergy, one cold sore, and one scaly gingivitis. All cases had their symptoms solved, but, in six cases, the clinical changes remained, although milder and asymptomatic. No adverse reaction was noted in the medical record. The statistical analysis showed no association in relation to gender (Fisher's exact test; p = 0.49; p> 0.05). There was no statistically significant diffe-rence in the frequency of injuries (Fisher's exact test; p = 0.85; p> 0.05). The use of 0.05% Clobetasol Propionate, prescribed for up to five days, proved effective in treating ulcerated lesions of the oral mucosa, mainly for symptomatic relief. Furthermore, it revealed no ad-verse effects.
