ABSTRACT

Much effort has been devoted to improving treatment efficiency for osteosarcoma (OS). However, most current approaches result in poor therapeutic responses, thus indicating the need for the development of other therapeutic options. This study developed a multifunctional nanoparticle, PDA-MOF-E-M, an aggregation of OS targeting, programmed death targeting, and near-infrared (NIR)-aided targeting. At the same time, a multifunctional nanoparticle that utilises Fe-MOFs to create a cellular iron-rich environment and erastin as a ferroptosis inducer while ensuring targeted delivery to OS cells through cell membrane encapsulation is presented. The combination of PDA-MOF-E-M and PTT increased intracellular ROS and LPO levels and induced ferroptosis-related protein expression. A PDA-based PTT combined with erastin showed significant synergistic therapeutic improvement in the anti-tumour efficiency of the nanoparticle in vitro and vivo. The multifunctional nanoparticle efficiently prevents the osteoclasia progression of OS xenograft bone tumors in vivo. Finally, this study provides guidance and a point of reference for clinical approaches to treating OS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment of one patient with TAFRO syndrome, and to strengthen the understanding of this rare type. METHODS: The clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment process, and prognosis of the patient admitted in Gansu Provincial People's Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Combined with laboratory tests, bone marrow examination, imaging, pathology, etc, the patient was diagnosed with TAFRO syndrome. After three cycles of treatment with pomalidomide (2-3 mg/d, d1-21), cyclophosphamide (300 mg/m2, 0.54 g once a week) and dexamethasone (20 mg/d, two days a week), platelet count, serum creatinine and procalcitonin returned to normal, the systemic edema disappeared, and the patient's condition was alleviated. The therapeutic effect was good. CONCLUSION: TAFRO syndrome is rare, involves multiple systems, progresses rapidly, and has a worse prognosis. The choice of the "Pomalidomide+cyclophosphamide+dexamethasone" regimen is help to improve the survival prognosis of patient with TAFRO syndrome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW) is a prevalent and severe issue among ICU patients. Resistance training and beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) intervention have demonstrated the potential to enhance muscle function in patients with sarcopenia and in older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine whether resistance training and/or HMB administration would improve physical function, muscle strength, and quality of life in medical ICU patients. METHODS: In this multicentre, four-arm, single-blind randomised control trial, a total of 112 adult patients with internal medical diagnoses admitted to the ICU were enrolled. These participants were then randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: the resistance training group received protocol-based multilevel resistance exercise, the HMB group received 3 g/day of HMBCa, combination group and control groups received standard care, from the ICU to the general ward until discharge. The primary outcomes assessed at discharge included six-minute walking distance (6MWD) and short physical performance battery (SPPB). Secondary outcomes measured included muscle mass, MRC score, grip strength, and health reports quality of life at different time points. Data analysis was performed using a generalised linear mixed model, adhering to the principles of intention-to-treat analysis. RESULTS: Resistance training and combination treatment groups exhibited significant increases in SPPB scores (3.848 and 2.832 points, respectively) compared to the control group and substantial improvements in 6WMD (99.768 and 88.577 m, respectively) (all with P < 0.01). However, no significant changes were observed in the HMB group. Muscle strength, as indicated by MRC and grip strength tests conducted at both ICU and hospital discharge, showed statistically significant improvements in the resistance training and combination groups (P < 0.05). Nevertheless, no significant differences were found between the treatment groups and usual care in terms of 60-day mortality, prevalence of ICU-AW, muscle mass, quality of life, or other functional aspects. CONCLUSIONS: Resistance training with or without beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate during the entire hospitalisation intervention improves physical function and muscle strength in medical ICU patients, but muscle mass, quality of life, and 60-day mortality were unaffected. ABSTRACT

In the field of recycling CO2, the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a typical example, and researchers have designed a variety of photocatalysts to improve the conversion rate of CO2 over the years. In this paper, two metal-oxygen clusters are designed and formulated as [Co3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (1) and [Ni3Zn(OH)6(SO4)]·4H2O (2). As for compound 1, the main structure is composed of {CoO6} octahedra connected by edge-sharing to form a two-dimensional layer, on which {ZnO4} and {SO4} tetrahedra are supported. More interestingly, compound 1 has outstanding photocatalytic activity, which is mainly attributed to the open-framework structure and the cobalt ions as active sites. Upon catalysis for eight hours, its maximum CO generation rate is 9982.13 µmol g-1 h-1, with a selectivity of 81.8%. Additionally, compound 1 takes on weak antiferromagnetic coupling due to Co(II) ions.

ABSTRACT

The present paper aimed to investigate the roles of quinones contained in wastewater and the enhanced effects on microbial fuel cells (MFCs) under different redox conditions. The feasibility of using wastewater rich in quinones to act as co-substrate and redox mediators (RMs) library to strengthen the synergistic removal of azo dye in MFCs was evaluated. The results demonstrated that quinones achieved enhanced effects on electricity generation and COD removal of MFC better at higher current intensity. The addition of pure quinone decreased electron transfer resistance (Rct) of MFCs from 4.76 Ω to 2.13 Ω under 1000 Ω resistance and 1.16 Ω-0.75 Ω under 50 Ω resistance. Meanwhile, higher coulombic efficiency was achieved. Compared with sodium acetate, using quinone-rich traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wastewater as the co-substrate enhanced the synergistic removal of reactive red 2 (RR2) in MFCs from 79.58% to 92.45% during 24 h. RR2 was also degraded more thoroughly due to the accelerated electron transfer process mediated by RMs. Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the presence of quinone in TCM wastewater can enrich different exoelectrogens under varied redox conditions and thus influenced the enhanced effects on MFC. Metagenomic functional prediction results further indicated that the abundance of functional genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport metabolism, biofilm formation, and stress tolerance increased significantly in presence of RMs. Redundancy analyses revealed that RMs addition was the more important factor driving the variation of the microorganism community. This study revealed the potential effect of quinones as redox mediators on the bioelectrochemical system for pollutants removal.

ABSTRACT

Reactive red 2 (RR2) is a highly recalcitrant and toxic azo dye that can cause the collapse of biological treatment system. Although MFC can decolorize RR2 effectively, its performance is still inevitably affected by toxicity. Anthraquinone can enhance MFCs' performance through mediating electron transfer. In this study, an anthraquinone-rich natural plants (B.rheum (Rheum offcinale Baill)) was extracted and then added to MFCs. The optimal dosage was selected and the enhanced effects were investigated. The results showed that adding 5%(V/V) extract resulted in the optimal performance elevation of MFC. When 5% extract was added together with RR2, 15.63% and 1.33-fold improvement in RR2 decolorization efficiency and rate were achieved compared with the control group. Meanwhile, higher power density (2.75 W/m3), coulombic efficiency (6.45%), and lower internal resistance (233.69 Ω) were also observed when 5% B.rheum extract and RR2 were added. B.rheum extract in MFCs enhanced microbial activity and enriched the dye-degrading microorganisms, such as Enterobacter, Raoultella, Comamonas and Shinella. B.rheum extract acts as "antidote" in alleviating the biotoxicity of RR2 was firstly illustrated in this study. The results provided a new strategy for using plant-source electron mediators to simultaneously improve biological detoxification, bioelectricity generation and dye decolorization in bioelectrochemical system.

ABSTRACT

A pure inorganic cluster, H47 Na2 Co4 Mo24 (PO4 )11 O72 ⋅ 15H2 O (denoted as {Co4 Mo24 }), has been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. Notably, the assembly of a central {Co2 PO4 } tetrahedron and four peripheral {Co[P4 Mo6 ]} fragments gives rise to a rare "quasi-Keggin" structure of {Co4 Mo24 }, in which Co linkers continue to bridge adjacent substructures, resulting in the generation of 3D framework with large cavities. Benefitting from the combination of strong reductive {P4 Mo6 } units and Co active centers, the photocatalytic system with {Co4 Mo24 } as heterogeneous catalyst exhibits excellent activity for CO2 conversion to CO, offering the CO formation rate of 1848.3 µmol g-1 h-1 with high selectivity of 97.0 %. Besides, thermogravimetric and X-ray diffraction analysis confirm that {Co4 Mo24 } can maintain stable during the photocatalytic reaction process.

BACKGROUND: Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at high risk for suicide. As the worst outcome of MDD and common self-concealment in patients with suicide risk, studies of biomarkers may provide useful tools for suicide prevention and treatment. METHODS: This study recruited 168 patients with MDD from the Objective Diagnostic Markers and Personalized Intervention in MDD patients (ODMPIM), including 50 patients with suicide risk. Based on previous evidence and hypothesis, 23 targeted serum biomarkers involving immune-inflammation, neurotrophins, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and metabolism, were measured. We used path analysis and principal components analysis (PCA) to clarify the associations among serum biomarkers, childhood adversities, adulthood life events, severity of depression and suicide risk. RESULTS: We identified that patients with suicide risk had a higher level of inflammatory markers in serum than patients without suicide risk (P < 0.001), especially chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL-1). After using the Bonferroni correction, there were no differences in biomarkers related to neurotrophins, HPA-axis and metabolism. In addition, a higher proportion of patients with suicide risk had adulthood adversity (assessed by Life Events Scale) (P = 0.003). Intriguingly, path analysis demonstrated that the association between adulthood adversity and suicide risk mainly depended on severity of depression and inflammatory index. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the possible role of inflammation involved in suicide risk of MDD patients. Inflammatory markers have the potential for early identification and then reducing suicidal behaviors or becoming novel treatment targets in suicide risk management.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of serum free light chain (sFLC) on renal function and prognosis in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM). METHODS: The clinical data of 70 newly diagnosed MM patients who received sFLC examination in Fujian Medical University Union Hospital were retrospectively analyzed from April 2012 to November 2016. Univariate analysis was used to analyze the risk factors that associated with renal impairment (RI) and prognosis. Logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier analyze were used to analyze the roles of sFLC in RI and the prognosis. RESULTS: Out of the 70 patients, 20 patients had RI at the initial diagnosis. Compared to normal renal function group, RI group had lower level of hemoglobin, elevated levels of serum uric acid, corrected calcium, serum creatinine, serum ß2 microglobulin, and involved sFLC, higher proportion of patients with ISS stage III, involved sFLC≥500 mg/L, hemodialysis (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum uric acid≥430 µmol/L, ISS stage III and a involved sFLC≥500 mg/L were all the independent risk factors for RI in patients with newly diagnosed MM patients (all P<0.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analysis showed that the involved sFLC was 705.0 mg/L, which was a best cut-off value area under curve (AUC) for prediting RI in patients with MM was 0.727 (P=0.003), sensitivity was 65.0% and specificity was 82.0%). After a median follow-up period of 31 (1-84) months, the median overall survival (OS) of patients with involved sFLC≥500mg/L and involved sFLC<500 mg/L were 52.0 and 27.0 months, respectively, there was no statistically significant difference (P=0.137). There was also no statistically significant difference in median OS between the high sFLC ratio group (κ/λ>32 or <0.03) and the low sFLC ratio group (0.03≤κ/λ≤32) (27 months vs 40 months, P=0.436). CONCLUSION: The involved sFLC in the RI group is significantly higher than that in the normal renal function group in newly diagnosed MM patients. Serum uric acid≥430 µmol/L, ISS stage III and involved sFLC≥500 mg/L are the independent risk factors for RI. Monitoring sFLC in newly diagnosed MM patients is helpful to the prediction of RI, and the involved sFLC level or sFLC ratio may not affect the prognosis of newly diagnosed MM patients.

ABSTRACT

We present a facile strategy for fabricating a new type of one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterial named carbon nanobranches (CNBs) covered with botryoidal carbon dots (CDs) by direct pyrolysis of a green precursor (starch). The resultant CNBs display both photoluminescence and electrical conductivity and can be assembled into chemical sensors and energy-storage devices. In terms of their bright photoluminescence, CNBs with a fabulous crystalline structure are utilized as fluorescent probes to sensitively and selectively detect Co2+ with a very low detection limit of 2.85 nM and a wide linear concentration range from 10 nM to 1 mM. Moreover, an efficient micro-supercapacitor (micro-SC) is constructed based on conductive CNB fibers produced via a customized microfluidic spinning technique. The micro-SCs exhibit a large specific capacitance of 201.4 mF cm-2, an energy density of 4.5 µW h cm-2 and high cycling stability, and can successfully power 19 light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The main purpose of this paper is to offer a perspective into simplifying the connecting of research and industry by starting from green carbon-based materials.

In this paper, we report a study on the structure and first hyperpolarizability of C60Cl2 and C60F2. The calculation results show that the first hyperpolarizabilities of C60Cl2 and C60F2 were 172 au and 249 au, respectively. Compared with the fullerenes, the first hyperpolarizability of C60Cl2 increased from 0 au to 172 au, while the first hyperpolarizability of C60F2 increased from 0 au to 249 au. In order to further increase the first hyperpolarizability of C60Cl2 and C60F2, Li@C60Cl2 and Li@C60F2 were obtained by introducing a lithium atom to C60Cl2 and C60F2. The first hyperpolarizabilities of Li@C60Cl2 and Li@C60F2 were 2589 au and 985 au, representing a 15-fold and 3.9-fold increase, respectively, over those of C60Cl2 and C60F2. The transition energies of four molecules (C60Cl2, Li@C60Cl2, C60F2, Li@C60F2) were calculated, and were found to be 0.17866 au, 0.05229 au, 0.18385 au, and 0.05212 au, respectively. A two-level model explains why the first hyperpolarizability increases for Li@C60Cl2 and Li@C60F2.

ABSTRACT

Multicolor fluorescent hollow carbon spheres (HCSs) are fabricated by an easy one-step route of in situ pyrolysis process with the use of natural scales and collagen powders as the precursor. The gas blow forming mechanism and photoluminescence (PL) emission mechanism of HCSs have been thoroughly discussed and proved that HCSs represent the first examples of three-dimensional multicolor fluorescent nanomaterials based on carbon dots (CDs). The HCSs encapsulate enriched carbon dots with high quantum yields (QYs) of 38%, and thus are applied in inkjet printing and sensitized solar cells. This strategy offers a promising avenue for preparing multicolor fluorescent hollow carbon materials on an industrial scale.

ABSTRACT

How do lithium atoms affect the first hyperpolarizability (ß0) of boron-nitrogen (BN) edge-doped graphene. In this work, using pentacene as graphene model, Lin@BN-1 edge-doped pentacene and Lin@BN-2 edge-doped pentacene (n = 1, 5) were designed to study this problem. First, two models (BN-1 edge-doped pentacene, and BN-2 edge-doped pentacene ) were formed by doping the BN into the pentacene with different order, and then Li@BN-1 edge-doped pentacene and Li@ BN-2 edge-doped pentacene were obtained by substituting the H atom in BN edge-doped pentacene with a Li atom. The results show that the first hyperpolarizabilities of BN-1 edge-doped pentacene and Li@BN-1 edge-doped pentacene were 4059 a.u. and 6249 a.u., respectively; the first hyperpolarizabilities of BN-2 edge-doped pentacene and Li@BN-2 edge-doped pentacene were 2491 a.u. and 4265 a.u., respectively. The results indicate that the effect of Li substitution is to greatly increase the ß0 value. To further enhance the first hyperpolarizability, Li5@ BN-1 edge-doped pentacene and Li5@BN-2 edge-doped pentacene were designed, and were found to exhibit considerably larger first hyperpolarizabilities (ß0) (12,112 a.u. and 7921a.u., respectively). This work may inspire further study of the nonlinear properties of BN edge-doped graphene.

BACKGROUND: Family members provide essential support for ICU patients, contributing to their mental and physical recovery. Empowering ICU patients' families may help them overcome inadequacies and meet their own and patients' acknowledged needs. Nursing should understand and address patients' families' empowerment status. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop a tool, the Nurses' Empowerment Scale for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Patients' Families (NESIPF), to help ICU nursing staff assess the empowerment status of patients' families. DESIGN: Four-phase instrument development study. METHODS: A 19-item instrument was initially generated based on literature review and interviews with family members of ICU patients. The Delphi research method was applied to gain expert opinion and consensus via rounds of questionnaires. A panel of 27 experts experienced in critical care medicine, nursing and psychology participated in two Delphi rounds and their input helped formulate an 18-item pretest instrument. Families of 20 patients were recruited to examine instrument readability. After a 2-week interval, another 20 patients' families were recruited to examine test-retest reliability. Two hundred questionnaires were then administered and analysed to examine the instrument's construct validity, criterion-related validity and internal consistency. RESULTS: Expert authority coefficients of two Delphi rounds reached 0·89 and 0·91. Kendall' W coefficients of 0·113 (P < 0·001) in round 1 and 0·220 (P < 0·001) in round 2 indicated slight to fair agreement among experts. Content validity index (CVI) reached 1·0 for 12 items; the CVI for item 13 was <0·7 so it was excluded. Cronbach's α coefficient was 0·92, indicating acceptable internal consistency reliability. The coefficient of internal consistency of each dimension was 0·717-0·921. The Pearson correlation coefficient >0·9 (P < 0·05) showed an acceptable test-retest reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The instrument has acceptable reliability and validity and can assess the empowerment status of families of critically ill patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Knowledge of families' empowerment status may help to address their psychological needs and their ability to provide family support.

ABSTRACT

This paper points out that the so called enhanced variational iteration method (Colantoni & Boubaker, 2014) for a nonlinear equation arising in electrospinning and vibration-electrospinning process is the standard variational iteration method. An effective algorithm using the variational iteration algorithm-II is suggested for Bratu-like equation arising in electrospinning. A suitable choice of initial guess results in a relatively accurate solution by one or few iteration.

BACKGROUND: MMP 14 is expressed in atherosclerotic plaques and potentially plays an important role in the development of vulnerable carotid plaques. MMP 14 gene polymorphisms can influence the bioactivity or expression of MMP 14. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between MMP 14 position + 7096 T > C (NM_004995.2:c.855T> C, rs2236307) polymorphism and vulnerable carotid plaque formation. METHODS: 1370 patients with ischemic cerebral infarctions were enrolled and divided into three groups according to their carotid ultrasound examination: No plaque group (n = 346), stable plaque group (n = 695) and vulnerable plaque group (n = 329). The traditional atherosclerosis risk factors were recorded, and the MMP 14 polymorphism were genotyped by Applied Biosystems 7300 Real-Time PCR System using the TaqMan assay. RESULTS: In the multiple logistic regression analysis done among the sub-groups, compared to no carotid plaque group, individuals with the MMP 14 position + 7096 TC+ CC genotype showed a significantly (p = 0.009) lower risk for vulnerable plaque (AOR = 0.675; 95% CI, 0.568-0.922) formation compared with subjects of the TT genotype; however, no relation between TC+ CC genotype and stable carotid plaque was observed (p > 0.125). Age was a risk factor for both stable plaque (p = 0.000; AOR = 3.732; 95% CI: 2.496-5.58) and vulnerable plaque formation (p = 0.001; AOR = 2.234; 95% CI: 1.387-3.597). Meanwhile, fibrinogen (> 4.0 g/L) was a risk factor for stable plaque (p = 0.004; AOR = 2.313; 95% CI: 1.308-4.091). CONCLUSIONS: The MMP 14 position + 7096 TC+ CC genotype might lower the risk of vulnerable carotid plaque formation. Fibrinogen (> 4.0 g/L) was a risk factor for stable plaque.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between 2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in exonic regions of matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP-10) gene and instability of carotid plaques in a Han Chinese population. METHODS: Five hundred and eighty-five patients were divided into carotid vulnerable plaque group (n=206) and stable plaque group (n=379) based on results of carotid B-mode ultrasonography. The SNPs were genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reaction using an ABI 7300 TaqMan platform. RESULTS: The distribution of rs17435959 between the two groups was significantly different at both genotypic (GC+CC vs. GG, P=0.006, OR=2.012) and allelic levels (C vs. G, P=0.001,OR=2.160). Above differences have remained significant with binary logistic regression analysis (P=0.007, OR=2.022; P=0.002, OR=2.104). The minor allele frequency of rs17293607 was 0.56%. CONCLUSION: Above findings suggested that rs17435959 of the MMP-10 gene is associated with carotid vulnerable plaque in ethnic Chinese Hans. The C allele may be a susceptible predictor for carotid vulnerable plaque.

ABSTRACT

As a powerful and promising analytical technique, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been undergoing a rapid development in the past years. LIBS technique allows for rapid, multi-elemental, in situ measurements, and has been proposed for real time soil analysis. Currently, a global effort is focused on how to further improve the analytical accuracy and repeatability of this promising technique. In the present paper, a method of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the determination of Cr and Sr in soil was established. The experimental instrument was mainly equipped with a pulsed 1 064 nm Nd : YAG laser and a portable spectrometer. The behavior of shot to shot variation in spectra line intensity emitted by the laser plasma was studied. Data acquisition and processing procedures were experimentally optimized. The precision of the method was, in terms of RSD, 9.02% for Cr 425.44 nm and 10.5% for Sr 460.73 nm respectively (n = 8). Detection limits were 25.3 mg x g(-1) for Cr and 15.2 mg x g(-1) for Sr in soil respectively. These results are better than the data reported in literature, indicating that the established LIBS method is suitable for the determination of heavy metal in soil.
