ABSTRACT

High voltage cobalt-free spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) is well organized as a high-power cathode material for lithium (Li)-ion batteries, however, the weak interaction between the 3d orbital of the transition metal (TM) ions and the 2p orbital of oxygen (O) leads to the instability of crystal structural, hindering the long-term stable cycling of LNMO cathode especially at high temperatures. Here, a design strategy of orbital interaction is initiated to strengthen TM 3d-O 2p framework in P-doped LNMO (P-LNMO) by choosing phytic acid as P dopant, which can realize more uniform doping compared to regular phosphate. The results show that the enhancement of TM 3d-O 2p orbital interaction in P-LNMO can suppress the Jahn-Teller effect and subsequent dissolution of Mn, as well as lowers the energy barrier for Li ion insertion/extraction kinetics. As a result, superior electrochemical performances including high discharge capacity, stable cycling behavior and enhanced rate capability of P-LNMO are obtained. Significantly, the P-LNMO pouch cell shows great cycling stability with 97.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles.

ABSTRACT

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are competitive among the elective candidates for electrochemical energy storage systems, but the intrinsic drawbacks of zinc metal anodes such as dendrites and corrosion severely hinder their large-scale application. Developing alternative anode materials capable of high reversibility and stability for storing Zn2+ ions is a feasible approach to circumvent the challenge. Herein, a sulfur-defect-induced TiS1.94 (D-TiS1.94) as a promising intercalation anode material for ZIBs is designed. The abundant Zn2+-storage active sites and lower Zn2+ migration barrier induced by sulfur defects endow D-TiS1.94 with a high capacity for Zn2+-storage (219.1 mA h g-1 at 0.05 A g-1) and outstanding rate capability (107.3 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1). In addition, a slight volume change of 8.1% is identified upon Zn2+ storage, which favors a prolonged cycling life (50.3% capacity remaining in 1500 cycles). More significantly, the D-TiS1.94||ZnxMnO2 full battery demonstrates a high discharge capacity of 155.7 mA h g-1 with a capacity retention of 59.8% in 400 cycles. It has been estimated that the high-capacity, low-operation voltage, and long-life D-TiS1.94 can be a promising component of the ZIB anode material family, and the strategy proposed in this work will provide guidance to the defect engineering of high-performance electrode materials toward energy storage applications.

ABSTRACT

SIGNIFICANCE: Suspected clinically significant macular edema (SCSME) from exudates differed among ethnic groups in our underserved population. African American and Asian subjects had higher prevalence than Hispanics and non-Hispanic Caucasians, from the same clinics. Men had higher prevalence than women. Highly elevated blood glucose was frequent and associated with SCSME. PURPOSE: We investigated the association between the presence of SCSME from exudates and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), as well as demographic factors such as age, sex, and ethnic group. Our population was underserved diabetic patients from the same geographic locations. Ethnic groups were White Hispanic, non-Hispanic Caucasian, African American, and Asian, with a high proportion of underrepresented minorities. METHODS: In a diabetic retinopathy screening study at four community clinics in Alameda County, California, nonmydriatic 45° color fundus images were collected from underserved diabetic subjects following the EyePACS imaging protocol. Images were analyzed for SCSME from exudates by two certified graders. Logistic regression assessed the association between SCSME from exudates and age, sex, ethnic group, and HbA1c. RESULTS: Of 1997 subjects, 147 (7.36%) had SCSME from exudates. The mean ± standard deviation age was 53.4 ± 10.5 years. The mean ± standard deviation HbA1c level was 8.26 ± 2.04. Logistic regression analysis indicated a significant association between presence of SCSME from exudates and HbA1c levels (p<0.001), sex (p=0.027), and ethnicity (p=0.030). African Americans (odds ratio [OR], 1.63; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06 to 2.50; p=0.025) and Asians (OR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.05 to 2.54; p=0.029) had a higher risk than Hispanics. After adjusting for ethnicity, sex, and age, the odds of developing SCSME from exudates increased by 26.5% with every 1% increase in HbA1c level (OR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.18 to 1.36; p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In our underserved population, many diabetic patients had very high HbA1c values. Ethnic background (African American > Asians > Hispanics), sex (male > female), and HbA1c level were strong indicators for identifying who is at increased risk of developing SCSME from exudates.

ABSTRACT

Chemical presodiation (CP) is an effective strategy to enhance energy density of sodium ion batteries. However, the sodiation reagents reported so far are basically polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) wth low reductive potential (~0.1 V vs. Na+ /Na), which could easily cause over-sodiation and structural deterioration of the presodiated cathodes. In this work, Aromatic ketones (AKs) are rationally designed as mild presodiating reagents by introducing a carbonyl group (C=O) into PAHs to balance the conjugated and inductive effect. As the representatives, two compounds 9-Fluorenoneb (9-FN) and Benzophenone (BP) manifest favorable equilibrium potential of 1.55 V and 1.07 V (vs. Na+ /Na), respectively. Note that 9-FN demonstrates versatile presodiating capability toward multiple Na uptake hosts (tunneled Na0.44 MnO2 , layered Na0.67 Ni0.33 Mn0.67 O2 , polyanionic Na4 Fe2.91 (PO4 )2 P2 O7 , Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 and Na3 V2 (PO4 )2 F3 ), enabling greatly improved initial charging capacity of the cathode to balance the irrevisible capacity of the anode. Our results indicate that the Aromatic ketones are competitive presodiating cathodic reagents for high-performance sodium-ion batteries, and will inspire more studies and application attempts in the future.

ABSTRACT

Background: Community reintegration after SCI rehabilitation consists of readjustment not only to the home setting but also to the social and occupational spheres, which often require people to spend nights away from home. Because community reintegration contributes to life satisfaction after SCI, it is necessary to investigate how travel participation is related to occupational and social participation and life satisfaction. Additionally, better management of the long-term effects of SCI requires better understanding of the changes in participation and life satisfaction over time. Objectives: To examine how participation and life satisfaction change over time following SCI, and to investigate whether spending nights away from home is associated with occupational and social participation and life satisfaction over time. Methods: This is a longitudinal analysis of data extracted from the publicly available database of Spinal Cord Model Systems from 1996 to 2016. A generalized linear mixed model was developed to examine the changes of outcome variables over time while controlling demographic variables. Results: Travel and social participation declined while life satisfaction increased as people lived longer with SCI, controlling for confounders. No significant change was identified in occupational participation. Spending nights away from home was significantly and positively associated with social and occupational participation and life satisfaction over time. Although travel participation of people with SCI declined over time, its association with social participation strengthened as the number of postinjury years increased. Conclusion: Travel participation plays an important role in successful community reintegration. Rehabilitation services and travel services should provide training and resources on travel after SCI for improved participation and life satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) with excellent safety, low-cost and environmental friendliness have great application potential in large-scale energy storage systems and thus have received extensive research interest. Layered oxovanadium phosphate dihydrate (VOPO4·2H2O) is an appealing cathode for AZIBs due to the unique layered framework and desirable discharge plateau, but bottlenecked by low operation voltage and unstable cycling. Herein, we propose delta-oxovanadium phosphate (δ-VOPO4) without conventional pre-embedding of metal elements or organics into the structure and paired it into AZIBs for the first time. Consequently, superior to the layered counterpart, δ-VOPO4 exhibits better performance with a prominent discharge voltage of 1.46 V and a higher specific capacity of 122.6 mA h g-1 at 1C (1C = 330 mA g-1), as well as an impressive capacity retention of 90.88 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles under 10C. By investigation of structure resolution and theoretical calculation, this work well elucidates the structure-function relationship in vanadyl phosphates, offering more chances for exploration of new cathode materials to construct high performance AZIBs.

ABSTRACT

Recent investigations have identified water polo athletes as at risk for concussions and repetitive subconcussive head impacts. Head impact exposure in collegiate varsity women's water polo, however, has not yet been longitudinally quantified. We aimed to determine the relationship between cumulative and acute head impact exposure across pre-season training and changes in serum biomarkers of brain injury. Twenty-two Division I collegiate women's water polo players were included in this prospective observational study. They wore sensor-installed mouthguards during all practices and scrimmages during eight weeks of pre-season training. Serum samples were collected at six time points (at baseline, before and after scrimmages during weeks 4 and 7, and after the eight-week pre-season training period) and assayed for neurofilament light (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) using Simoa® Human Neurology 2-Plex B assay kits. Serum GFAP increased over time (e.g., an increase of 0.6559 pg/mL per week; p = 0.0087). Neither longitudinal nor acute pre-post scrimmage changes in GFAP, however, were associated with head impact exposure. Contrarily, an increase in serum NfL across the study period was associated with cumulative head impact magnitude (sum of peak linear acceleration: B = 0.015, SE = 0.006, p = 0.016; sum of peak rotational acceleration: B = 0.148, SE = 0.048, p = 0.006). Acute changes in serum NfL were not associated with head impacts recorded during the two selected scrimmages. Hormonal contraceptive use was associated with lower serum NfL and GFAP levels over time, and elevated salivary levels of progesterone were also associated with lower serum NfL levels. These results suggest that detecting increases in serum NfL may be a useful way to monitor cumulative head impact burden in women's contact sports and that female-specific factors, such as hormonal contraceptive use and circulating progesterone levels, may be neuroprotective, warranting further investigations.

ABSTRACT

Epidemiologic evidence is limited about associations between T2DM, metformin, and the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). We aimed to examine associations between T2DM, metformin, and the risk of NHL in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Study. Information on T2DM status (diabetes status/types of antidiabetic drug use/diabetes duration) from study enrollment and during follow-up were assessed. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to evaluate associations of T2DM status with risks of overall NHL and its three major subtypes [diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, n = 476), follicular lymphoma (FL, n = 301) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL, n = 136)] based on multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models. During a median follow-up of 18.86 years (range, 0.01-25.13; SD ± 6.55), a total of 1637 women developed NHL among 147 885 postmenopausal women. Women with T2DM and with self-reported oral medication use had 38% and 55% higher risk of DLBCL, respectively [multivariable-adjusted model HR = 1.38, 95% CI (1.06-1.81) and HR = 1.55, 95% CI (1.16-2.06)] compared to the reference group (nondiabetics/untreated diabetes). Risks of NHL and DLBCL [multivariable-adjusted model: HR = 1.28, 95% CI (1.06-1.54) and HR = 1.56, 95% CI (1.13-2.14), respectively] were significantly higher in associations with relatively short duration (≤7 years) of diabetes, compared to reference group. Additionally, an increased risk of DLBCL [HR = 1.76, 95% CI (1.13-2.75)] was found in metformin users compared to the reference group. Postmenopausal women who had T2DM, who were oral antidiabetic drug users, especially metformin, and who had a shorter diabetes duration may have higher risks of DLBCL. Further well-designed research is needed to confirm our findings.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Two indexes have been used to describe dietary inflammatory potential: the experiment-based dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the literature-derived dietary inflammatory index (DII). How robustly each index represents dietary inflammatory potential and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not yet been established. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relation between dietary inflammatory potential and NAFLD, and compared the abilities of the TAC and DII scores to predict NAFLD in US adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 12,410 participants aged 20-80 y in the NHANES from 2011 to 2018 were identified. TAC and DII scores were calculated using 2 d of 24-h dietary recall data. We examined the association between dietary index and risk of NAFLD using linear and logistic regression models. RESULTS: Higher energy-adjusted TAC (E-TAC) and inversely energy-adjusted DII (IE-DII) scores (both representing more anti-inflammatory diets) were associated with lower hepatic steatosis index (HSI) and US fatty liver index (USFLI) values after adjusting for potential covariates, and the association for each SD increase in the IE-DII was stronger than the E-TAC (ß estimates for HSI: -0.39 compared with -0.25; P-difference = 0.036). In modeling the risk of NAFLD, we observed that participants with IE-DII scores in the highest quartile had the lowest ORs for NAFLD as assessed by either the HSI (OR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.62, 0.96; P-trend = 0.023) or USFLI (OR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.35, 0.68; P-trend <0.0001). TAC scores were also associated with NAFLD as assessed by the USFLI. CONCLUSIONS: An anti-inflammatory diet is beneficial for reducing the risk of NAFLD in US adults. The DII is a stronger predictor of hepatic measures than the TAC, and we recommend that future hepatic health studies use the DII to estimate dietary inflammatory potential.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are a promising large-scale energy-storage technology with low cost and high reliability. However, developing high-performance cathode materials remains the most prominent obstacle because of the insufficient magnesium-storage active sites and unfavorable magnesium cation transport paths, as well as the strong interaction between the cathode material and the bivalent magnesium cation. Herein, ammonium tetrathiomolybdate is demonstrated to be a high-performance RMB cathode material. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate exhibits a high capacity of 333 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 and a good rate performance of 129 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1 (∼15 C). An amorphous structure with plenty of efficient magnesium-storage active sites and open magnesium transport paths is in situ formed during the first cycle via ammonium extraction. The covalent-like bond between the molybdenum and sulfur delocalizes the negative charge, weakening the interaction with the bivalent magnesium cation and accelerating the kinetics. The covalent-like molybdenum-sulfur bond also promotes the simultaneous redox of molybdenum and sulfur, leading to a high specific capacity. The present work introduces a high-capacity and high-power RMB cathode material, elucidates the origin of the high performance, and provides insights for the design and optimization of RMB cathode materials.

ABSTRACT

Metformin has been suggested to reduce thyroid cancer incidence and to improve thyroid cancer prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the associations between metformin and thyroid cancer incidence and prognosis (metastasis/recurrence/progression-free survival). Cochrane Library, PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and U.S. National Library of Medicine Clinical Trials were searched through the end of December 2021. Data were collected from original observational studies or clinical trials on the incidence or prognosis of thyroid carcinoma outcomes in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with and without metformin use. Risk of bias in non-randomized studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) tool and Grading of Recommendations, and Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach were used to evaluate the risk of bias and quality of the body of evidence, respectively. In general, 4 studies were related to the thyroid cancer incidence, including 1,705,123 participants metformin users and non-users and yielding a total of 3,238 thyroid cancer events; 3 studies reported the prognosis of thyroid carcinoma based on a total of 4,972 individuals with primary thyroid carcinoma and comorbid type 2 diabetes, and the number of thyroid cancer prognosis cases ranged from 3 to 79. The overall risk of bias of the included studies ranged from moderate to serious. In the random-effects model, the summary relative risk (SRR) for thyroid cancer incidence was 0.743 (95% CI: 0.453-1.220; I2 = 88.7%, low certainty) comparing metformin users to non-users; and SRR for the prognosis of thyroid cancer was 0.504 (95% CI: 0.178-1.430; I2 = 57.5%, low certainty). Non-statistically significant negative associations between metformin use and incidence and prognosis of thyroid cancer were found in the current analysis, although the quantity and quality of the evidence were limited. Futher investigation is needed to evaluate the clinical benefits of metformin on thyroid cancer prevention and treatments.

ABSTRACT

MOTIVATION: CpG sites within the same genomic region often share similar methylation patterns and tend to be co-regulated by multiple genetic variants that may interact with one another. RESULTS: We propose a multi-trait methylation random field (multi-MRF) method to evaluate the joint association between a set of CpG sites and a set of genetic variants. The proposed method has several advantages. First, it is a multi-trait method that allows flexible correlation structures between neighboring CpG sites (e.g. distance-based correlation). Second, it is also a multi-locus method that integrates the effect of multiple common and rare genetic variants. Third, it models the methylation traits with a beta distribution to characterize their bimodal and interval properties. Through simulations, we demonstrated that the proposed method had improved power over some existing methods under various disease scenarios. We further illustrated the proposed method via an application to a study of congenital heart defects (CHDs) with 83 cardiac tissue samples. Our results suggested that gene BACE2, a methylation quantitative trait locus (QTL) candidate, colocalized with expression QTLs in artery tibial and harbored genetic variants with nominal significant associations in two genome-wide association studies of CHD. ABSTRACT

Metal-ion batteries have emerged as promising candidates for energy storage system due to their unlimited resources and competitive price/performance ratio. Vanadium-based compounds have diverse oxidation states rendering various open-frameworks for ions storage. To date, some vanadium-based polyanionic compounds have shown great potential as high-performance electrode materials. However, there has been a growing concern regarding the cost and environmental risk of vanadium. In this Review, all links in the industry chain of vanadium-based electrodes were comprehensively summarized, starting with an analysis of the resources, applications, and price fluctuation of vanadium. The manufacturing processes of the vanadium extraction and recovery technologies were discussed. Moreover, the commercial potentials of some typical electrode materials were critically appraised. Finally, the environmental impact and sustainability of the industry chain were evaluated. This critical Review will provide a clear vision of the prospects and challenges of developing vanadium-based electrode materials.

ABSTRACT

A silicon polyester (Si-PET) was synthesized with ethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride, and then it was carbonized and hydrothermally coated with glucose. The formed SiO x with layered graphene as the 3D network had an amorphous carbon layer. The graphene oxide (rGO) after carbothermal reduction was completely retained in SiO x , which improved the conductivity of the SiO x anode material. SiO x were encapsulated with a flexible amorphous carbon layer on the surface, which can not only improve the electrical performance, but also effectively relieve the huge volume changes of the compound. Further, the key point is that, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film was mainly formed on the surface carbon layer. This would keep a stable SEI film during volume pulverization, and result in a good cycle stability. The SiO x /C-rGO material maintained a reversible capacity of 660 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 for 100 cycles, a reversible capacity of 469.7 mA h g-1 at a current density of 200 mA g-1 for 300 cycles. The Coulomb efficiency was maintained at 98% except for the first cycle. After long cycling, the electrode expansion was 16%, which was much lower than those of silicon based materials. Therefore, this article provides a cheap, simple, and commercially valuable anode material for lithium batteries.

ABSTRACT

Recently Liu and Xie proposed a p-value combination test based on the Cauchy distribution (CCT). They showed that when the significance levels are small, CCT can control type I error rate and the resulting p-value can be simply approximated using a Cauchy distribution. One very special and attractive property of CCT is that it is applicable to situations where the p-values to be combined are dependent. However, in this paper, we show that under some conditions the commonly used MinP test is much more powerful than CCT. In addition, under some other situations, CCT is powerless at all. Therefore, we should use CCT with caution. We also proposed new robust p-value combination tests using a second MinP/CCT to combine the dependent p-values obtained from CCT and MinP applied to the original p-values. We call the new tests MinP-CCT-MinP (MCM) and CCT-MinP-CCT (CMC). We study the performance of the new tests by comparing them with CCT and MinP using comprehensive simulation study. Our study shows that the proposed tests, MCM and CMC, are robust and powerful under many conditions, and can be considered as alternatives of CCT or MinP.

Although, biological evidence suggests that tea consumption may protect against non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), epidemiologic evidence has been unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the association between tea-drinking habits and the risk of NHL in a large nationwide prospective cohort of postmenopausal US women. 68,854 women who were enrolled from 1993 through 1998 in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS) and responded to year 3 annual follow-up questionnaire comprised the analytic cohort. Newly diagnosed NHL cases after the year 3 visit were confirmed by medical and pathology reports. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were performed to assess the associations of tea-drinking habits (specifically, the amounts of caffeinated/herbal/decaffeinated tea intake) with the overall risk of NHL and 3 major subtypes (Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, DLBCL, (n=195, 0.3%), follicular lymphoma, FL, (n=128, 0.2%), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, CLL/SLL, (n=51, 0.1%)). Among 62,622 participants, a total of 663 (1.1%) women developed NHL during a median follow-up of 16.51(SD±6.20) years. Overall, different amounts of type-specific tea intake were not associated with the risk of NHL regardless of its histologic subtypes after adjustment for confounders. Our findings suggest that tea intake at the current consumption level does not influence the risk of NHL, regardless of its histologic types.

BACKGROUND: Some preliminary studies indicate that components in coffee may have anticarcinogenic effects. However, the association between coffee-drinking habits and the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) remain controversial. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between coffee intake and NHL incidence in a large prospective study of postmenopausal US women. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: The participants included 74,935 women from the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study who were recruited from 1993 through 1998. Information about coffee-drinking habits was collected at baseline via self-administered questionnaires. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Newly diagnosed NHL was validated by medical records and pathology records. Separate analyses were performed for the following three subtypes of NHL: diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n = 244), follicular lymphoma (n = 166), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (n = 64). STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Age-adjusted and multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were used to determine associations of coffee intake (specifically, the total amount of coffee consumed daily, coffee types, and coffee preparation methods) with risk of NHL. RESULTS: A total of 851 women developed NHL during a median 18.34 years of follow-up (range = 0.01 to 24.30 years; ± 6.63 years). Overall, no associations were observed between coffee intake and risk of NHL regardless of the total amount of daily coffee intake (P value for trend = 0.90), caffeinated (P = 0.55) or decaffeinated coffee intake (P = 0.78), and filtered or unfiltered coffee intake (P = 0.91) after controlling for sociodemographic factors, lifestyle risk factors, and clinical risk factors/current medical conditions. No significant associations were observed between coffee intake with specific subtypes of NHL. A statistically significant interaction was found between alcohol intake, coffee intake, and incident NHL (P value for interaction = 0.02) based on the adjusted analysis. Specifically, among women who frequently consumed alcohol (> 7 drinks/week), those who had moderate coffee intake (2 to 3 c coffee/day) had a significantly reduced risk of developing NHL (hazard ratio 0.61, 95% CI 0.36 to 0.98), compared with those who did not drink coffee. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this study do not support an association between coffee consumption and NHL risk, irrespective of the total amount of daily coffee intake, coffee types, or coffee preparation methods.

ABSTRACT

Sodium-ion battery has been considered as one of the most promising power sources for large-scale energy storage systems due to its similar electrochemistry to the lithium-ion battery and the crust abundance of Na resources. Essentially, developing low-cost electrode materials along with a facile and economical synthesis procedure is critically important to promote the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. However, applicable cathode materials capable of being massively produced are still scarcely reported to date. Herein, a green and scalable synthesis approach is developed to obtain Na3 Fe2 (PO4 )P2 O7 (NFPP)/rGO composite by using FePO4 and Na3 PO4 as the resources, during which all the atoms present in the starting materials end up in the product. The prepared Na3 Fe2 (PO4 )P2 O7 /rGO cathode exhibits an ultralong cycle life (capacity retention of 72.4% after 8000 cycles at 20 C) and outstanding rate capability (42.4 mAh g-1 at 100 C). In particular, the NFPP/rGO-HC full battery assembled by the Na3 Fe2 (PO4 )P2 O7 /rGO cathode and hard carbon anode demonstrates an energy density of 192 Wh kg-1 and superior cycling performance (capacity retention of 85.2% after 500 cycles). These results will contribute to the development of sodium-ion batteries from applicable Na3 Fe2 (PO4 )P2 O7 /rGO cathode material.

ABSTRACT

The additive genetic model as implemented in logistic regression has been widely used in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for binary outcomes. Unfortunately, for many complex diseases, the underlying genetic models are generally unknown and a mis-specification of the genetic model can result in a substantial loss of power. To address this issue, the MAX3 test (the maximum of three separate test statistics) has been proposed as a robust test that performs plausibly regardless of the underlying genetic model. However, the original implementation of MAX3 utilizes the trend test so it cannot adjust for any covariates such as age and gender. This drawback has significantly limited the application of the MAX3 in GWASs, as covariates account for a considerable amount of variability in these disorders. In this paper, we extended the MAX3 and proposed the CMAX3 (covariate-adjusted MAX3) based on logistic regression. The proposed test yielded a similar robust efficiency as the original MAX3 while easily adjusting for any covariate based on the likelihood framework. The asymptotic formula to calculate the p-value of the proposed test was also developed in this paper. The simulation results showed that the proposed test performed desirably under both the null and alternative hypotheses. For the purpose of illustration, we applied the proposed test to re-analyze a case-control GWAS dataset from the Collaborative Studies on Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). The R code to implement the proposed test is also introduced in this paper and is available for free download.

ABSTRACT

Rechargeable Mg-Li hybrid batteries have the merits of a Mg metal anode and a Li+ intercalation cathode, but the limited availability of Li resources hinders their large-scale application. Herein, rechargeable Mg-Na and Mg-K hybrid batteries are constructed with a low-defect Co3[Co(CN)6]2 nanocube cathode. The large redox active cavities of Co3[Co(CN)6]2 are highly favorable for reversible Na+ and K+ intercalations. The Mg-Na and Mg-K hybrid batteries provide reversible capacities of 123 and 126 mA h g-1, respectively, and a stable long-term cycling over 600 cycles. By contrast, the Mg-Li hybrid battery delivers a much lower capacity of 55 mA h g-1. It is also demonstrated that controlled crystallization of well-defined nanocubes with few lattice defects is important for these high-capacity Mg-Na and Mg-K hybrid battery cathodes. The low-defect Co3[Co(CN)6]2 nanocube cathode shows good rate capability, providing specific capacities of 45 and 53 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 in Mg-Na and Mg-K hybrid batteries, respectively. This study illustrates that low-defect Prussian blue analogs of Co3[Co(CN)6]2 are highly compatible and promising cathodes for Mg-Na and Mg-K hybrid batteries. The present study also provides a new method for the development of low-cost and high-performance batteries based on Mg metal anodes.
