ABSTRACT

An Electroencephalography (EEG) dataset utilizing rich text stimuli can advance the understanding of how the brain encodes semantic information and contribute to semantic decoding in brain-computer interface (BCI). Addressing the scarcity of EEG datasets featuring Chinese linguistic stimuli, we present the ChineseEEG dataset, a high-density EEG dataset complemented by simultaneous eye-tracking recordings. This dataset was compiled while 10 participants silently read approximately 13 hours of Chinese text from two well-known novels. This dataset provides long-duration EEG recordings, along with pre-processed EEG sensor-level data and semantic embeddings of reading materials extracted by a pre-trained natural language processing (NLP) model. As a pilot EEG dataset derived from natural Chinese linguistic stimuli, ChineseEEG can significantly support research across neuroscience, NLP, and linguistics. It establishes a benchmark dataset for Chinese semantic decoding, aids in the development of BCIs, and facilitates the exploration of alignment between large language models and human cognitive processes. It can also aid research into the brain's mechanisms of language processing within the context of the Chinese natural language.

ABSTRACT

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) present a dual burden to public health. The screening of DM in TB patients may aid in the early detection and management of diabetes, ultimately improving treatment outcomes for those with the comorbidity of TB-DM. We aim to examine the prevalence and identify risk factors of diabetes in individuals with active pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in financially affluent China cities. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in adult patients with highly suspected TB in two cities of China, spanning from May 9, 2023, to June 30, 2023. We compare the clinical characteristics, nutrition status, fasting blood glucose (FBG) level, living style, and knowledge of TB and DM at admission between patients with and without DM. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify risk factors associated with TB-DM comorbidities. Results: Of the 322 patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), 54 individuals (16.8%) had comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM). This included 43 males (13.4%) and 11 females (3.4%). The average age was 55.44 ± 12.36 in DM patients and 46.09 ± 16.87 in non-DM patients. A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that male (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]=3.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-10.30), age older than 47 years (aOR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.07), having a family history of diabetes (aOR = 5.09, 95% CI: 1.28-20.32), and an elevated random blood glucose level (aOR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.38-1.86) were risk factors for DM in patients with PTB. Furthermore, it was found that diabetes awareness (aOR = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.03-0.21) and zero, light to moderate alcohol consumption were associated with a lower risk of diabetes. Conclusion: Diabetes is prevalent in patients with active PTB. Screening and raising awareness of DM are recommended, particularly in men after middle age with a family history of diabetes and elevated random blood glucose. Early diagnosis of diabetes and effective diabetes prevention may reduce the dual burden of TB-DM comorbidity.

ABSTRACT

Bile reflux gastritis (BRG), a kind of gastrointestinal disorder in clinical practice, is characterized by regurgitation and inflammation. However, lack of guidelines leads to simple cognition and even ignorance of this disease for clinicians. Primarily, making the pathogenesis of BRG clear contributes to a correct and general understanding of this disease for physicians. Next, although recently there has been an increasing awareness among researchers in terms of the relevant factors for BRG, further studies involving large samples are still required to certify the relationship between them explicitly. Besides, researches have established that BRG is closely associated with the development of precancerous lesions and gastric cancer. Till now, there is still no golden standard for diagnosis of BRG. Nevertheless, advances in techniques, especially extensive applications of endoscopy and chemical analysis of reflux contents, have improved our ability to identify the occurrence of this disease as well as distinguishing physiological reflux from pathological reflux. Finally, it is fortunate for patients that more and more importance has been attached to the treatment of BRG. From lifestyle modification to drug therapy to surgery, all of them with the view of realizing symptomatic relief are employed for patients with BRG. In this review, we briefly evaluate this disorder based on the best available evidence, offering an overview of its complicated pathogenesis, diverse relevant factors, potential carcinomatous risk, modern diagnostic investigations, and effective therapeutic plans.

ABSTRACT

The N-H and C-H activation is of great significance in organic chemistry and chemical industry fields, especially, in the utilization of petroleum raw materials. High NδH (tautomer of natural histidine) content would increase Alzheimer's disease risk. To inhibit this and improve the activation of N-H and C-H bonds, the isomerization mechanism from NδH to NεH of histidine-containing dipeptide catalyzed by water cluster was explored. The results discovered that water cluster assists this reaction by reducing the activation energies from 68.20 to 9.60 kcal mol-1, and its size not only affects the reaction rate but also determines the reaction pathway in a degree. Moreover, water cluster, taken as a potential green catalyst, is more effective on the reactions involving N-H and C-H bond cleavages than reported common toxic organometallic compounds and has different catalytic mechanisms. This work also provides some theoretical guidance for the modulation of Alzheimer's disease induced by histidine isomerization.

BACKGROUND: Although advances in the treatment of stage IV gastric cancer (GC) patients, some patients were observed to die within 3 months of initial diagnosis. The present study aimed to explore the early mortality and risk factors for stage IV GC and further develop nomograms. METHODS: A total of 2,174 eligible stage IV GC patients were selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk factors and develop the nomograms to predict all-cause early death and cancer-specific early death. The predictive performance of the nomograms was assessed by receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC), calibration plots and decision curve analyses (DCA) in both training and validation cohorts. RESULTS: Of 2,174 patients enrolled, 708 died within 3 months of initial diagnosis (n=668 for cancer-specific early death). Early mortality remained stable from 2010-2015. Non-Asian or Pacific Islander (API) race, poorer differentiation, middle sites of the stomach, no surgery, no radiotherapy, no chemotherapy, lung metastases and liver metastases were associated with high risk of both all-causes early death and cancer-specific early death. The nomograms constructed based on these factors showed favorable sensitivity, with the area under the ROC range of 0.816-0.847. The calibration curves and DCAs also exhibited adequate fit and ideal net benefit in prediction and clinical application. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately one-third of stage IV GC patients experienced early death. These associated risk factors and predictive nomograms may help clinicians identify the patients at high risk of early death and be the reference for treatment choices.

In petroleum industry, the release of more and more carbon dioxide (CO2) brings greenhouse effect and even results in climate change, leading CO2 capture to become an urgent issue. To design ideal and effective absorbent, interaction mechanism for CO2 capture was systematically investigated in a series of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). The potential effects of alkyl side chain, electron-philic halogen (F, Cl, Br) atom(s), electron-denoting groups OH and NH2 (bound on cation or/and anion), and water solvent were disclosed on CO2 capture using CAM-B3LYP functional with SMD-GIL solvation model, and the most potential green effective absorbent was predicted. This work provides an explicit idea and theoretical basis about the design of desired IL for CO2 capture. Graphical abstract In present work, no/halogen/amino/hydroxy-functionalized imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ILs were studied for CO2 absorption at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory by SMD-GIL solvation model. NH2 is more potent group in absorbing CO2 than halogen and OH, and its number is proportional to the adsorption capacity of IL. A potentially high-capacity CO2 absorbent with four NH2 groups was predicted. In addition, the mixture of water could further enhance such chemical absorption by lowering the activation energy barriers and viscosity of IL.
