ABSTRACT

Limited special education and related services are available for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Macau, especially those who are educated in general education classrooms. No intervention study has been conducted on these children. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between a board game play intervention and board game play behaviors and social communication of children with ASD educated in general education classrooms in Macau. A repeated measures design was used and the results of this study showed the mean occurrence of unprompted board game play behaviors per session during intervention was not significantly different from that during pre- or post-intervention. The mean occurrence of social communication per session during intervention was significantly higher than that during pre- and post-intervention. These findings suggest a positive relationship existed between the board game intervention used in this study and social communication of children with ASD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic ultrasound-guided high mechanical index impulses during an intravenous microbubble infusion (sonothrombolysis) improve myocardial perfusion in acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, but its effect on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (DD), left atrial (LA) mechanics and remodeling is unknown. We assessed the effect of sonothrombolysis on DD grade and LA mechanics. METHODS: One hundred patients (59 ± 10 years; 34% women) were randomized to receive either high mechanical index impulses plus percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (therapy group) or PCI only (control group) (n = 50 in each group). Diastolic dysfunction grade and LA mechanics were assessed immediately before and after PCI and at 48 to 72 hours, 1 month, and 6 months of follow-up. Diastolic dysfunction grades were classified as grades I, II, and III. The LA mechanics was obtained by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography-derived global longitudinal strain (GLS). RESULTS: As follow-up time progressed, increased DD grade was observed more frequently in the control group than in the therapy group at 1 month and 6 months of follow-up (all P < .05). The LA-GLS values were incrementally higher in the therapy group when compared with the control group at 48 to 72 hours, 24.0% ± 7.3% in the therapy group versus 19.6% ± 7.2% in the control group, P = .005; at 1 month, 25.3% ± 6.3% in the therapy group versus 21.5% ± 8.3% in the control group, P = .020; and at 6 months, 26.2% ± 8.7% in the therapy group versus 21.6% ± 8.5% in the control group, P = .015. The therapy group was less likely to experience LA remodeling (odds ratio, 2.91 [1.10-7.73]; P = .03). LA-GLS was the sole predictor of LA remodeling (odds ratio, 0.79 [0.67-0.94]; P = .006). CONCLUSION: Sonothrombolysis is associated with better DD grade and LA mechanics, reducing LA remodeling.

ABSTRACT

Current thermally conductive and electrically insulating insulation systems are struggling to meet the needs of modern electronics due to increasing heat generation and power densities. Little research has focused on creating insulation systems that excel at both dissipating heat and withstanding high voltages (i.e., have both high thermal conductivity and a high breakdown strength). Herein, a polyelectrolyte-based multilayer nanocomposite is demonstrated to be a thermally conductive high-voltage insulation. Through inclusion of both boehmite and vermiculite clay, the breakdown strength of the nanocomposite was increased by ≈115%. It was also found that this unique nanocomposite has an increase in its breakdown strength, modulus, and hydrophobicity when exposed to elevated temperatures. This readily scalable insulation exhibits a remarkable combination of breakdown strength (250 kV/mm) and thermal conductivity (0.16 W m-1 K-1) for a polyelectrolyte-based nanocomposite. This dual clay insulation is a step toward meeting the needs of the next generation of high-performance insulation systems.

ABSTRACT

Identifying zeolite catalysts that can simultaneously optimize p-xylene selectivity and feed utilization is critical to toluene alkylation with methanol (TAM). Here, we show that zeolite MCM-22 (MWW) has an exceptional catalyst lifetime in the TAM reaction at high operating pressure, conversion, and selectivity. We systematically probe the catalytic behavior of active sites in distinct topological features of MCM-22, revealing that high p-xylene yield and catalyst stability are predominantly attributed to sinusoidal channels and supercages, respectively. Using a combination of catalyst design and testing, density functional theory, and molecular dynamics simulations, we propose a spatiotemporal coke coupling phenomenon to explain a multistage p-xylene selectivity profile wherein the formation of light coke in supercages initiates the deactivation of unselective external surface sites. Our findings indicate that the specific nature of coke is critical to catalyst performance. Moreover, they provide unprecedented insight into the synchronous roles of distinct topological features giving rise to the exceptional stability and selectivity of MCM-22 in the TAM reaction.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Clopidogrel has been demonstrated to be effective in improving coronary microcirculation (CM) among patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with fibrinolytics. Ticagrelor is a more potent adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor blocker proven to be superior to clopidogrel among patients with acute coronary syndromes. The present study aimed to compare the effects of ticagrelor and clopidogrel on CM in patients with STEMI treated with fibrinolytics. METHODS: The present study prospectively included 48 patients participating in the TREAT trial, which randomly assigned patients with STEMI undergoing fibrinolysis to ticagrelor versus clopidogrel. The primary endpoint of this study was the evaluation of the CM using the global myocardial perfusion score index (global MPSI) obtained by myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE). Platelet aggregation to ADP was evaluated by Multiplate® and expressed as area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS: The global MPSI demonstrated no differences between the groups [mean 1.4 (1.2-1.5) in the ticagrelor group and 1.2 (1.2-1.5) in the clopidogrel group (p = 0.41)]. Platelet aggregability was lower in the ticagrelor group (18.1 ± 9.7 AUC), compared to the clopidogrel group (26.1 ± 12.5 AUC, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: We found no improvement in coronary microcirculation with ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel among patients with STEMI treated with fibrinolytics, despite the fact that platelet aggregation to ADP was lower with ticagrelor. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a major complication after heart transplantation. Endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) remains the gold standard for its diagnosis, but it has concerning complications. We evaluated the usefulness of speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) and biomarkers for detecting ACR after heart transplantation. METHODS: We prospectively studied 60 transplant patients with normal left and right ventricular systolic function who underwent EMB for surveillance 6 months after transplantation. Sixty age- and sex-matched healthy individuals constituted the control group. Conventional echocardiographic parameters, left ventricular global longitudinal, radial and circumferential strain (LV-GLS, LV-GRS and LV-GCS, respectively), left ventricular systolic twist (LV-twist) and right ventricular free wall longitudinal strain (RV-FWLS) were analyzed just before the procedure. We also measured biomarkers at the same moment. RESULTS: Among the 60 studied patients, 17 (28%) had severe ACR (grade ≥ 2R), and 43 (72%) had no significant ACR (grade 0 - 1R). The absolute values of LV-GLS, LV-twist and RV-FWLS were lower in transplant patients with ACR degree ≥ 2 R than in those without ACR (12.5% ± 2.9% vs 14.8% ± 2.3%, p=0.002; 13.9° ± 4.8° vs 17.1° ± 3.2°, p=0.048; 16.6% ± 2.9% vs 21.4%± 3.2%, p < 0.001; respectively), while no differences were observed between the LV-GRS or LV-GCS. All of these parameters were lower in the transplant group without ACR than in the nontransplant control group, except for the LV-twist. Cardiac troponin I levels were significantly higher in patients with significant ACR than in patients without significant ACR [0.19 ng/mL (0.09-1.31) vs 0.05 ng/mL (0.01-0.18), p=0.007]. The combination of troponin with LV-GLS, RV-FWLS and LV-Twist had an area under curve for the detection of ACR of 0.80 (0.68-0.92), 0.89 (0.81-0.93) and 0.79 (0.66-0.92), respectively. CONCLUSION: Heart transplant patients have altered left ventricular dynamics compared with control individuals. The combination of troponin with strain parameters had higher accuracy for the detection of ACR than the isolated variables and this association might select patients with a higher risk for ACR who will benefit from an EMB procedure in the first year after heart transplantation.

ABSTRACT

Recording ion fluctuations surrounding biological cells with a nanoelectronic device offers seamless integration of nanotechnology into living organisms and is essential for understanding cellular activities. The concentration of potassium ion in the extracellular fluid (CK+ex) is a critical determinant of cell membrane potential and must be maintained within an appropriate range. Alteration in CK+ex can affect neuronal excitability, induce heart arrhythmias, and even trigger seizure-like reactions in the brain. Therefore, monitoring local fluctuations in real time provides an early diagnosis of the occurrence of the K+-induced pathophysiological responses. Here, we modified the surface of a silicon nanowire field-effect transistor (SiNW-FET) with K+-specific DNA-aptamers (AptK+) to monitor the real-time variations of CK+ex in primary cultured rat embryonic cortical neurons or human embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. The binding affinity of AptK+ to K+, determined by measuring the dissociation constant of the AptK+-K+ complex (Kd = 10.1 ± 0.9 mM), is at least 38-fold higher than other ions (e.g., Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+). By placing cultured cortical neurons over an AptK+/SiNW-FET device, α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) stimulation raised the CK+ex dose-dependently to 16 mM when AMPA concentration was >10 µM; this elevation could be significantly suppressed by an AMPA receptor antagonist, 6,7-dinitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione. Likewise, the stimulation of isoproterenol to cardiomyocytes raised the CK+ex to 6-8 mM, with a concomitant increase in the beating rate. This study utilizing a robust nanobiosensor to detect real-time ion fluctuations surrounding excitable cells underlies the importance of ion homeostasis and offers the feasibility of developing an implant device for real-time monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Transparent polymeric thin films with high oxygen barrier are important for extending the shelf life of food and protecting flexible organic electronic devices. Polyelectrolyte/clay multilayer nanocoatings are shown to exhibit super gas barrier performance, but the layer-by-layer assembly process requires numerous deposition steps. In an effort to more quickly fabricate this type of barrier, a polyelectrolyte/clay coacervate composed of branched polyethyleneimine (PEI), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and kaolinite (KAO) clay is prepared and deposited in a single step, followed by humidity and thermal post-treatments. When deposited onto a 179 µm poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film, a 4 µm coacervate coating reduces the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) by more than three orders of magnitude, while maintaining high transparency. This single-step deposition process uses only low-cost, water-based components and ambient conditions, which can be used to for sensitive food and electronics packaging.

ABSTRACT

Most current flame-retardant nanocoatings for flexible polyurethane foam (PUF) consist of passive barriers, such as clay, graphene oxide, or metal hydroxide. In an effort to develop a polymeric and environmentally benign nanocoating for PUF, positively charged chitosan (CH) and anionic sodium hexametaphosphate (PSP) were deposited using layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. Only six bilayers of CH/PSP film can withstand flame penetration during exposure to a butane torch (∼1400 °C) for 10 s and stop flame spread on the foam. Additionally, cone calorimetry reveals that the fire growth rate, peak heat release rate, and maximum average rate of heat emission are reduced by 55, 43, and 38%, respectively, compared with uncoated foam. This multilayer thin film quickly dehydrates to form an intumescent charred exoskeleton on the surface of the open-celled structure of polyurethane, inhibiting heat transfer and completely eliminating melt dripping. This entirely polymeric nanocoating provides a safe and effective alternative for reducing the fire hazard of polyurethane foam that is widely used for cushioning and insulation.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been demonstrated that high-energy diagnostic transthoracic ultrasound and intravenous microbubbles dissolve thrombi (sonothrombolysis) and increase angiographic recanalization rates in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction. We aimed to study the effect of sonothrombolysis on the myocardial dynamics and infarct size obtained by real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography and their value in preventing left ventricular remodeling. METHODS: One hundred patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction were randomized to therapy (50 patients treated with sonothrombolysis and percutaneous coronary intervention) or control (50 patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention only). Left ventricular volumes, ejection fraction, risk area (before treatment), myocardial perfusion defect over time (infarct size), and global longitudinal strain were determined by quantitative real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography and speckle tracking echocardiography imaging. RESULTS: Risk area was similar in the control and therapy groups (19.2±10.1% versus 20.7±8.9%; P=0.56) before treatment. The therapy group presented a behavior significantly different than control group over time (P<0.001). The perfusion defect was smaller in the therapy at 48 to 72 hours even in the subgroup of patients with no recanalization at first angiography (12.9±6.5% therapy versus 18.8±9.9% control; P=0.015). The left ventricular global longitudinal strain was higher in the therapy than control immediately after percutaneous coronary intervention (14.1±4.1% versus 12.0±3.3%; P=0.012), and this difference was maintained until 6 months (17.1±3.5% versus 13.6±3.6%; P<0.001). The only predictor of left ventricular remodeling was treatment with sonothrombolysis: the control group was more likely to exhibit left ventricular remodeling with an odds ratio of 2.79 ([95% CI, 0.13-6.86]; P=0.026). CONCLUSIONS: Sonothrombolysis reduces microvascular obstruction and improves myocardial dynamics in patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction and is an independent predictor of left ventricular remodeling over time.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac shock-wave therapy (CSWT) has been demonstrated as an option for the treatment of patients with refractory angina (RA), promoting immediate vasodilatory effects and, in the long-term, neoangiogenic effects that would be responsible for reducing the myocardial ischemic load. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of CSWT on myocardial blood flow reserve (MBFR) assessed by quantitative real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography in patients with RA. METHODS: Fifteen patients (mean age 61.5 ± 12.8 years) with RA who underwent CSWT during nine sessions, over 3 months of treatment, were prospectively studied. A total of 32 myocardial segments with ischemia were treated, while another 31 did not receive therapy because of technical limitations. Myocardial perfusion was evaluated at rest and after dipyridamole stress (0.84 mg/kg) before and 6 months after CSWT, using quantitative real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography. Clinical effects were evaluated using Canadian Cardiovascular Society grading of angina and the Seattle Angina Questionnaire. RESULTS: The ischemic segments treated with CSWT had increased MBFR (from 1.33 ± 0.22 to 1.74 ± 0.29, P < .001), a benefit that was not observed in untreated ischemic segments (1.51 ± 0.29 vs 1.54 ± 0.28, P = .47). Patients demonstrated increased global MBFR (from 1.78 ± 0.54 to 1.89 ± 0.49, P = .017). Semiquantitative single-photon emission computed tomographic analysis of the treated ischemic segments revealed a score reduction from 2.10 ± 0.87 to 1.68 ± 1.19 (P = .024). There was improvement in Canadian Cardiovascular Society score (from 3.20 ± 0.56 to 1.93 ± 0.70, P < .05) and in Seattle Angina Questionnaire score (from 42.3 ± 12.99 to 71.2 ± 14.29, P < .05). No major cardiovascular events were recorded during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: CSWT improved MBFR in ischemic segments, as demonstrated by quantitative real-time myocardial perfusion echocardiography. These results suggest that CSWT has the potential to increase myocardial blood flow, with an impact on symptoms and quality of life in patients with RA.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical studies have demonstrated that high mechanical index (MI) impulses from a diagnostic ultrasound transducer during an intravenous microbubble infusion (sonothrombolysis) can restore epicardial and microvascular flow in acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). OBJECTIVES: This study tested the clinical effectiveness of sonothrombolysis in patients with STEMI. METHODS: Patients with their first STEMI were prospectively randomized to either diagnostic ultrasound-guided high MI impulses during an intravenous Definity (Lantheus Medical Imaging, North Billerica, Massachusetts) infusion before, and following, emergent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or to a control group that received PCI only (n = 50 in each group). A reference first STEMI group (n = 203) who arrived outside the randomization window was also analyzed. Angiographic recanalization before PCI, ST-segment resolution, infarct size by magnetic resonance imaging, and systolic function (LVEF) at 6 months were compared. RESULTS: ST-segment resolution occurred in 16 (32%) high MI PCI versus 2 (4%) PCI-only patients before PCI, and angiographic recanalization was 48% in high MI/PCI versus 20% in PCI only and 21% in the reference group (p < 0.001). Infarct size was reduced (29 ± 22 g high MI/PCI vs. 40 ± 20 g PCI only; p = 0.026). LVEF was not different between groups before treatment (44 ± 11% vs. 43 ± 10%), but increased immediately after PCI in the high MI/PCI group (p = 0.03), and remained higher at 6 months (p = 0.015). Need for implantable defibrillator (LVEF ≤30%) was reduced in the high MI/PCI group (5% vs. 18% PCI only; p = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: Sonothrombolysis added to PCI improves recanalization rates and reduces infarct size, resulting in sustained improvements in systolic function after STEMI. ABSTRACT

Sol-gels are found in many different scientific fields and have very broad applications. They are often prepared by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes such as trimethoxysilanes, which are commonly used as precursors in the preparation of silsequioxanes via the sol-gel process. The reaction rates of such reactions are influenced by a wide range of experimental factors such as temperature, pH, catalyst, etc. In this study, we combined multiple in situ spectroscopic techniques to monitor the hydrolysis and partial condensation reactions of methyltrimethoxysilane and phenyltrimethoxysilane. A rich set of kinetics information on intermediate species of the hydrolysis reactions were obtained and used for kinetics modeling. Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy provided the most information about hydrolysis and NMR provided the most information about condensation. A quantitative method based on Raman spectra to quantify the various transient intermediate hydrolysis products was developed using NMR as the primary method, which can be deployed in the field where it is impractical to carry out NMR measurements.

ABSTRACT

A graphene field-effect transistor (G-FET) with the spacious planar graphene surface can provide a large-area interface with cell membranes to serve as a platform for the study of cell membrane-related protein interactions. In this study, a G-FET device paved with a supported lipid bilayer (referred to as SLB/G-FET) was first used to monitor the catalytic hydrolysis of the SLB by phospholipase D. With excellent detection sensitivity, this G-FET was also modified with a ganglioside GM1-enriched SLB (GM1-SLB/G-FET) to detect cholera toxin B. Finally, the GM1-SLB/G-FET was employed to monitor amyloid-beta 40 (Aß40) aggregation. In the early nucleation stage of Aß40 aggregation, while no fluorescence was detectable with traditional thioflavin T (ThT) assay, the prominent electrical signals probed by GM1-SLB/G-FET demonstrate that the G-FET detection is more sensitive than the ThT assay. The comprehensive kinetic information during the Aß40 aggregation could be collected with a GM1-SLB/G-FET, especially covering the kinetics involved in the early stage of Aß40 aggregation. These experimental results suggest that SLB/G-FETs hold great potential as a powerful biomimetic sensor for versatile investigations of membrane-related protein functions and interaction kinetics.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we report a novel, one-step synthesis method to fabricate multilayer graphene (MLG)-wrapped copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) directly on various substrates (e.g., polyimide film (PI), carbon cloth (CC), or Si wafer (Si)). The electrical resistivities of the pristine MLG-CuNPs/PI and MLG-CuNPs/Si were measured 1.7 × 10-6 and 1.4 × 10-6 Ω·m, respectively, of which both values are ∼100-fold lower than earlier reports. The MLG shell could remarkably prevent the Cu nanocore from serious damages after MLG-CuNPs being exposed to various harsh conditions. Both MLG-CuNPs/PI and MLG-CuNPs/Si retained almost their conductivities after ambient annealing at 150 °C. Furthermore, the flexible MLG-CuNPs/PI exhibits excellent mechanical durability after 1000 bending cycles. We also demonstrate that the MLG-CuNPs/PI can be used as promising source-drain electrodes in fabricating flexible graphene-based field-effect transistor (G-FET) devices. Finally, the MLG-CuNPs/CC was shown to possess high performance and durability toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the extent to which life skills training was offered to middle and high school students with autism and life skills training needs after high school. A secondary analysis of the National Longitudinal Training Study-2 (NLTS-2) data was conducted in this study. This study found that the majority of the middle and high school students with autism (77.4%) had received life skills training in school. Receipt of life skills training differed across students' gender, age, diagnosis of intellectual disability, and functional mental skills. Students received life skills training in general education classrooms, special education classrooms, individual instruction, and community settings. Life skills training was needed for the majority of the high school leavers with autism (78%).

ABSTRACT

This study investigated mealtime behaviors of Chinese-American children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Thirty-one parents of Chinese-American children with ASD participated in this study and the Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI) was used. The top problematic mealtime behaviors reported by parents were prefers "crunchy" food (54.2%); not willing to try new foods (48%); and does not remain seated at the table until the meal is finished (46%). This study found that the majority of the Chinese-American children with ASD seldom or never were aggressive (96%) or disruptive during mealtimes (92.3%). Compared to their white counterparts, Chinese-American children with ASD showed slightly lower scores on problematic mealtime behaviors. These findings may provide significant information to practitioners.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study investigated parenting stress in South Korean mothers of adolescent children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the variables associated with their parenting stress. Methods: A total of 138 South Korean mothers participated in this study. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, ANOVA tests, and a stepwise multiple regression analysis were used in this study. Results: The majority of South Korean mothers of adolescent children with ASD in this study showed higher than normal parenting stress. Child's maladaptive behavior, receipt of early childhood special education, age, and autism severity as well as mother's receipt of services from mental health professionals were the factors significantly associated with parenting stress. Conclusion: Considering the factors significantly associated with mother's stress level, interventions focusing on child's maladaptive behavior and mother's mental health are important. The interventions aiming to address parenting stress in mothers of adolescent children with ASD may find the findings of this study useful.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the difference between children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and children with typical development (TD) in mathematical word problem solving ability and the factors associated with these children's word problem-solving ability. A total of 20 children with ASD and 20 children with TD participated in this study. Independent sample t tests and Spearman's rho correlations were used for data analysis. This study found: (a) Children with TD had higher word problem solving ability than did children with ASD; (b) Sentence comprehension, math vocabulary, computation, and everyday mathematical knowledge were associated with word problem solving ability of children with ASD and children with TD; and
