ABSTRACT

Miniaturized photodetectors are becoming increasingly sought-after components for next-generation technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, integrated wearable devices, or gadgets embedded on the Internet of Things. A major challenge, however, lies in shrinking the device footprint while maintaining high efficiency. This conundrum can be solved by realizing a nontrivial relation between the energy and momentum of photons, such as dispersion-free devices, known as flat bands. Here, we leverage flat-band meta-optics to simultaneously achieve critical absorption over a wide range of incidence angles. For a monolithic silicon meta-optical photodiode, we achieved an ∼10-fold enhancement in the photon-to-electron conversion efficiency. Such enhancement over a large angular range of ∼36° allows incoming light to be collected via a large-aperture lens and focused on a compact photodiode, potentially enabling high-speed and low-light operation. Our research unveils new possibilities for creating compact and efficient optoelectronic devices with far-reaching impact on various applications, including augmented reality and light detection and ranging.

ABSTRACT

Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted increasing interest in the realization of single-photon emitters owing to their ease of chemical synthesis, wide spectral tunability, fast recombination rate constant, scalability, and high quantum yield. However, the integration of a single perovskite NC into a photonic structure has yet to be accomplished. In this work, the integration of a highly stable individual zwitterionic ligand-based CsPbBr3 perovskite NC with a circular Bragg grating (CBG) is successfully demonstrated. The far-field radiation pattern of the NC inside the CBG exhibits high directionality toward a low azimuthal angle, which is consistent with the simulation results. A 5.4-fold enhancement in brightness is observed due to an increase in collection efficiency. Moreover, a 1.95-fold increase in the recombination rate constant is achieved. This study offers ultrafast (<100 ps) single-photon emission and an improved brightness of perovskite NCs, which are critical factors for practical quantum optical applications.

ABSTRACT

Knowledge about mitogenomes has been proven to be essential in human parasite diagnostics and understanding of their diversity. However, the lack of substantial data for comparative analysis is still a challenge in Trichuris trichiura research. To provide high quality mitogenomes, we utilized long-read sequencing technology of Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) to better resolve repetitive regions and to construct de novo mitogenome assembly minimizing reference biases. In this study, we got three de novo assembled mitogenomes of T. trichiura isolated from Korean individuals. These circular complete mitogenomes of T. trichiura are 14,508 bp, 14,441 bp, and 14,440 bp in length. A total of 37 predicted genes were identified consisting of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNAs) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes (rrnS and rrnL), and two non-coding regions. Interestingly, the assembled mitogenome has up to six times longer AT-rich regions than previous reference sequences, thus proving the advantage of long-read sequencing in resolving unreported non-coding regions. Furthermore, variant detection and phylogenetic analysis using concatenated protein coding genes, cox1, rrnL, and nd1 genes confirmed the distinct molecular identity of this newly assembled mitogenome while at the same time showing high genetic relationship with sequences from China or Tanzania. Our study provided a new set of reference mitogenome with better contiguity and resolved repetitive regions that could be used for meaningful phylogenetic analysis to further understand disease transmission and parasite biology.

ABSTRACT

Metalenses with two foci in the longitudinal or transverse direction, called bifocal or dual-focus metalenses, are promising building blocks in tomography techniques, data storage, and optical tweezers. For practical applications, relative movement between the beam and specimen is required, and beam scanning is highly desirable for high-speed operation without vibration. However, dual-focus metalenses employ a hyperbolic phase that experiences off-axis aberrations, which is not suitable for beam scanning. Here, we demonstrated a scannable dual-focus metalens by employing a new phase called "hybrid phase". The hybrid phase consists of a hyperbolic phase inside and a quadratic phase outside to reduce off-axis aberrations while maintaining a high numerical aperture. We show that the two foci of the scannable dual-focus metalens move together without severe distortion for incident angles of up to 2.5°. Our design easily extends to the case of multifocusing, which is essential for various applications ranging from imaging to manipulation.

ABSTRACT

Among the diverse platforms of quantum light sources, epitaxially grown semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are one of the most attractive workhorses for realizing quantum photonic technologies owing to their outstanding brightness and scalability. However, the spatial and spectral randomness of most QDs severely hinders the construction of large-scale photonic platforms. In this work, a methodology is presented to deterministically integrate single QDs with tailor-made photonic structures. A nondestructive luminescence picking method termed as nanoscale-focus pinspot (NFP) is applied using helium-ion microscopy to reduce the luminous QD density while retaining the surrounding medium. A single QD emission is only extracted out of the high-density ensemble QDs. Then the tailor-made photonic structure of a circular Bragg reflector (CBR) is designed and deterministically integrated with the selected QD. Given that the microscopy can image with nanoscale resolution and apply NFP in situ, photonic devices can be deterministically fabricated on target QDs. The extraction efficiency of the NFP-selected QD emission is improved by 25 times after the CBR integration. Since the NFP method only controls the luminescence without destroying the medium, it is applicable to various photonic structures such as photonic waveguides or photonic crystal cavities regardless of materials.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiologic characteristics of the fatigue-type of SSFFH in healthy military recruits. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed 39 hips from 32 patients who were treated for SSFFH between 2014 and 2018. Clinical variables were analyzed. We devised a categorization system that divided SSFFH into five types (A-E) according to the extent of the fracture line MRI axial view. The femoral head was divided into three parts for the categorization: the anterior third, middle third, and posterior third. RESULTS: The included patients were 39 hips from 32 patients with the mean age 22.3 years. Almost all patients with SSFFH (96.9%) complained of hip pain with limping at the time of diagnosis. The mean time to the onset of the hip pain from the beginning of military training was 24.8 days. There were seven patients (21.9%) with concomitant stress fractures on whole-body bone scan. Six hips (15.4%) developed osteoarthritis and required surgery. Almost all the cases (94.9%) involved the anterior compartment of the femoral head. CONCLUSIONS: Military recruits with the hip pain and limping within one month of military training should undergo detailed evaluation. A whole-body bone scan with SPECT is useful for identifying other concomitant stress fractures. Majority of SSFFH involved the anterior compartment of the femoral head.

ABSTRACT

For decades, group-III-nitride-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have been regarded as a light emitting source for future displays by virtue of their novel properties such as high efficiency, brightness, and stability. Nevertheless, realization of high pixel density displays is still challenging due to limitations of pixelation methods. Here, a maskless and etching-free micro-LED (µLED) pixelation method is developed via tailored He focused ion beam (FIB) irradiation technique, and electrically driven sub-micrometer-scale µLED pixel arrays are demonstrated. It is confirmed that optical quenching and electrical isolation effects are simultaneously induced at a certain ion dose (≈1014 ions cm-2 ) without surface damage. Furthermore, highly efficient µLED pixel arrays at sub-micrometer scale (square pixel, 0.5 µm side length) are fabricated. Their pixelation and brightness are verified by various optical measurements such as cathodo-, photo-, and electroluminescence. It is expected that the FIB-induced optical quenching and electrical isolation method can pioneer a new defect engineering technology not only for µLED fabrication, but also for sub-micrometer-scale optoelectronic devices.

III-Nitride semiconductor-based quantum dots (QDs) play an essential role in solid-state quantum light sources because of their potential for room-temperature operation. However, undesired background emission from the surroundings deteriorates single-photon purity. Moreover, spectral diffusion causes inhomogeneous broadening and limits the applications of QDs in quantum photonic technologies. To overcome these obstacles, it is demonstrated that directly pumping carriers to the excited state of the QD reduces the number of carriers generated in the vicinities. The polarization-controlled quasi-resonant excitation is applied to InGaN QDs embedded in GaN nanowire. To analyze the different excitation mechanisms, polarization-resolved absorptions are investigated under the above-barrier bandgap, below-barrier bandgap, and quasi-resonant excitation conditions. By employing polarization-controlled quasi-resonant excitation, the linewidth is reduced from 353 to 272 µeV, and the second-order correlation value is improved from 0.470 to 0.231. Therefore, a greater single-photon purity can be obtained at higher temperatures due to decreased linewidth and background emission.

ABSTRACT

As interests in air quality monitoring related to environmental pollution and industrial safety increase, demands for gas sensors are rapidly increasing. Among various gas sensor types, the semiconductor metal oxide (SMO)-type sensor has advantages of high sensitivity, low cost, mass production, and small size but suffers from poor selectivity. To solve this problem, electronic nose (e-nose) systems using a gas sensor array and pattern recognition are widely used. However, as the number of sensors in the e-nose system increases, total power consumption also increases. In this study, an ultra-low-power e-nose system was developed using ultraviolet (UV) micro-LED (µLED) gas sensors and a convolutional neural network (CNN). A monolithic photoactivated gas sensor was developed by depositing a nanocolumnar In2O3 film coated with plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) directly on the µLED. The e-nose system consists of two different µLED sensors with silver and gold NP coating, and the total power consumption was measured as 0.38 mW, which is one-hundredth of the conventional heater-based e-nose system. Responses to various target gases measured by multi-µLED gas sensors were analyzed by pattern recognition and used as the training data for the CNN algorithm. As a result, a real-time, highly selective e-nose system with a gas classification accuracy of 99.32% and a gas concentration regression error (mean absolute) of 13.82% for five different gases (air, ethanol, NO2, acetone, methanol) was developed. The µLED-based e-nose system can be stably battery-driven for a long period and is expected to be widely used in environmental internet of things (IoT) applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) cancer cell culture systems have been developed to aid the study of molecular mechanisms in cancer development, identify therapeutic targets, and test drug candidates. In this study, we developed a strategy for mimicking the hypoxic tumor microenvironment in a 3D cancer cell culture system using multi-layer, nanofibrous poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffold (pNFS)-based cancer cell cultures. We found that human colon cancer cells infiltrated pNFS within 3 days and could be cultured three-dimensionally within the NFS. When incubated in four stacks of 30 µm-thick pNFS for 3 days, colon cancer cells in layer three showed partially reduced entry into the S phase, whereas those in layer four, located farthest from the media, showed a marked reduction in S-phase entry. As a consequence, cells in layer four exhibited hypoxia-induced disorganization of F-actin on day 3, and those in layers three and four showed an increase in the expression of the hypoxia-induced transcription factor HIF-1α and its target genes, Glut1, CA9, VEGF, and LDHA. Consistent with these results, doxorubicin- and ionizing radiation-induced cell death was reduced in colon cancer cells cultured in layers three and four. These results suggest that pNFS-based multi-layer colon cancer cell cultures mimic the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and are useful for bioassays.

ABSTRACT

Epitaxially grown quantum dots (QDs), especially embedded in photonic structures, play an essential role in various quantum photonic systems as on-demand single-photon sources. However, these QDs often suffer from adjacent unwanted emitters, which contribute to the background noise of the QD emission and fundamentally limit the single-photon purity. In this paper, a nanoscale focus pinspot (NFP) technique using focused-ion-beam-induced luminescence quenching enables us to improve single-photon purity from site-controlled QD as a proof-of-concept experiment. The optical quality of the QD emission is not degraded while the signal-to-noise ratio of the QD is improved. Moreover, the QD after the NFP technique reveals the single-photon nature at further elevated temperatures owing to the reduced background noise. As the NFP technique is nondestructive, it retains the apparent physical structures and photonic functions, thereby indicating its promising potential for applying diverse high-purity quantum emitters, particularly integrated in photonic devices and circuits.

Helminth infections are prevalent in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). This study aimed at determining the prevalence and risk factors of intestinal helminthiasis in remote mountainous villages of northern Lao PDR. During the dry season in January 2017, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 3 remote mountainous villages in Oudomxay province, Lao PDR. Villagers older than 18 years of age who agreed to submit stool samples or undergo an interview, were recruited. Stool samples from 198 individuals were examined by the Kato-Katz method, and a questionnaire surveyed 161 individuals among them. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors associated with the intestinal helminthiasis. An overall prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis was 75.8%. Hookworm infection was the most common (63.1%), followed by Opisthorchis viverrini/minute intestinal flukes (17.7%), Taenia spp. (15.2%), Trichuris trichiura (2.0%), Ascaris lumbricoides (1.5%), and Enterobius vermicularis (1.0%). Questionnaire analysis revealed sex (male) and absence of latrine to be significant risk factors for hookworm infection and consumption of raw meat for taeniasis. These results suggest that the mountainous area in northern Lao PDR has a different composition of helminth infections from other studies conducted in Lao PDR; a high prevalence of hookworm infection and taeniasis and low prevalence of T. trichiura and A. lumbricoides infections were observed. Also, liver flukes or intestinal flukes were similarly prevalent in the mountainous area.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) is endemic in Fiji but its prevalence is not known and likely to have changed after a decade of mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF). By linking with LF transmission assessment surveys (LF-TAS), we undertook the first nation-wide assessment of STH in Fijian primary schools, as well as an analysis of factors associated with STH infections. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional assessment for STH was conducted in all four Divisions of Fiji from 2014 to 2015. In the Western, Central, and Northern Divisions, schools were sub-sampled after LF-TAS, while, in the Eastern Division, schools were selected via simple random sampling. For the diagnosis of STH, stool samples were examined by coproscopy with a single Kato-Katz thick smear (KK) and the formol-ether-acetate concentration technique, except for the samples from the Eastern Division where only KK was used. Mean prevalence of any STH among class 1-2 students at the national level was 10.5% (95% CI: 6.9-15.5). Across the three Divisions via LF-TAS, the prevalence levels for ascariasis were 8.7% (95% CI: 4.3-16.6), hookworm 3.9% (95% CI: 2.3-6.6) and trichuriasis 0%. In the Eastern Division, ascariasis prevalence was 13.3% (95% CI: 6.4-25.6), and hookworm 0.7% (95% CI: 0.2-2.5), with one case of trichuriasis. Among class 3-8 students, ascariasis prevalence was lower. Lower risk of any STH was associated with wearing shoes (adjusted OR 0.54, 95% CI: 0.32-0.90) and having piped water from the Fiji Water Authority at home (adjusted OR 0.48, 95% CI: 0.25-0.92). CONCLUSIONS: After a decade of community-based LF-MDA, STH in school-age children in Fiji is now close to 10%, but localities of endemicity remain. Preventive chemotherapy should be maintained in areas with elevated STH prevalence alongside targeted delivery of integrated WASH interventions. LF-TAS has provided an opportunity to develop future public health surveillance platforms.

ABSTRACT

We report an anti-reflective cover glass for Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin film solar cells. Subwavelength structures (SWSs) were fabricated on top of a cover glass using one-step self-masked etching. The etching method resulted in dense whiskers with high aspect ratio. The produced structure exhibited excellent anti-reflective properties over a broad wavelength range, from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. Compared to a flat-surface glass, the average transmittance of the glass integrated with the SWSs improved from 92.4% to 95.2%. When the cover glass integrated with the SWSs was mounted onto the top of a CIGS device, the short-circuit current and the efficiency of the solar cell were enhanced by 4.38 and 6%, respectively, compared with a CIGS solar cell without cover glass.

Eosinophilia occurs commonly in many diseases including allergic diseases and helminthic infections. Toxocariasis has been suggested as one cause of eosinophilia. The present study was undertaken to examine the prevalence of toxocariasis in patients with eosinophilia and to identify the risk factors for toxocariasis. This prospective cohort study recruited a total of 81 patients with eosinophilia (34 males and 47 females) who visited the outpatient clinic at Seoul National University Hospital from January 2017 to February 2018 and agreed to participate in this study. The prevalence of toxocariasis was examined by T. canis-specific ELISA, and the various risk factors for toxocariasis were evaluated by a questionnaire survey. Among 81 patients with eosinophilia, 18 were positive for anti-T. canis antibodies (22.2%); 88.9% were male (16/18) and 11.1% were female (2/18). Multivariate statistical analysis revealed that males (OR 21.876, 95% CI: 1.667-287.144) with a history of consuming the raw meat or livers of animals (OR 5.899, 95% CI: 1.004-34.669) and a heavy alcohol-drinking habit (OR 8.767, 95% CI: 1.018-75.497) were at higher risk of toxocariasis in patients with eosinophilia. Toxocariasis should be considered a potential cause of eosinophilia when the patient has a history of eating the raw meat or livers of animals in Korea. A single course of albendazole is recommended to reduce the migration of Toxocara larvae in serologically positive cases with eosinophilia.

ABSTRACT

Physiological signals can be utilized to monitor conditions of a driver, but the inter-subject variance of physiological signals can degrade the classification accuracy of the monitoring system. Personalization of the system using the data of a tested subject, called local data, can be a solution, but the acquisition of sufficient local data may not be possible in real situations. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective personalizing method using small-sized local data. The proposed method utilizes a fuzzy support vector machine to allocate higher weight to the local data than to others, and a fuzzy membership is assigned to the training data by analyzing the importance of each datum. Three classification problems for a physiological signal-based driver monitoring system are introduced and utilized to validate the proposed method. The classification accuracy is compared with that of other personalizing methods, and the results show that the proposed method achieves a better accuracy on average, which is 3.46% higher than that of the simple approach using a basic support vector machine, thereby proving its effectiveness. The proposed method can train a personalized classifier with improved accuracy for a tested subject. The advantages of the proposed method can be utilized to develop a practical driver monitoring system.

Angiogenesis is critical for local tumor growth. This study aimed to develop a three-dimensional two-layer co-culture system to investigate effects of cancer cells on the growth of endothelial cells (ECs). Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibrous membranes were generated via electrospinning of PCL in chloroform (C-PCL-M) and chloroform and dimethylformamide (C/DMF-PCL-M). We assembled a two-layer co-culture system using C-PCL-M and C/DMF-PCL-M for EC growth in the upper layer with co-cultured cancer cells in the lower layer. In the absence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), growth of bEND.3 ECs decreased on C/DMF-PCL-M but not on C-PCL-M with time. Growth of bEND.3 cells on C/DMF-PCL-M was enhanced through co-culturing of CT26 cancer cells and enhanced growth of bEND.3 cells was abrogated with anti-VEGF antibodies and sorafenib. However, EA.hy926 ECs displayed steady growth and proliferation on C/DMF-PCL-M, and their growth was not further increased through co-culturing of cancer cells. Moreover, chemical hypoxia in CT26 cancer cells upon treatment with CoCl2 enhanced the growth of co-cultured bEND.3 cells in the two-layer system. Thus, EC growth on the nanofibrous scaffold is dependent on the types of ECs and composition of nanofibers and this co-culture system can be used to analyze EC growth induced by cancer cells.

ABSTRACT

A 23-year-old Korean woman with a residence history in Kenya and Malawi for about 2 years presented with gross hematuria for 1 month. Blood tests were within normal range except eosinophilia. Asymmetrically diffuse wall thickening and calcification were observed at the urinary bladder on CT. Multiple erythematous nodular lesions were observed in the cystoscopy and transurethral resection was done. Numerous eggs of Schistosoma haematobium with granulomatous inflammation were observed in the submucosal layer of the bladder. The patient was diagnosed with schistosomiasis-related cystitis and treated with praziquantel (40 mg/kg/day) twice before and after transurethral resection. This case suggests that S. haematobium infection should be considered as a cause of hematuria in Korea when the patient had a history of traveling endemic areas of schistosomiasis.

ABSTRACT

A complicated case of echinococcosis with multiple organ involvement is reported in a 53-year-old businessman who frequently traveled overseas, including China, Russia, and Kazakhstan from 2001 to 2007. The patient was first diagnosed with a large liver cyst during a screening abdomen ultrasonography in 2011, but he did not follow up on the lesion afterwards. Six years later, dizziness, dysarthria, and cough developed, and cystic lesions were found in the brain, liver and lungs. The clinical course was complicated when the patient went through multiple surgeries and inadequate treatment with a short duration of albendazole without a definite diagnosis. The patient visited our hospital for the first time in August 2018 due to worsening symptoms; he was finally diagnosed with echinococcosis using imaging and serologic criteria. He is now on prolonged albendazole treatment (400 mg twice a day) with gradual clinical and radiological improvement. A high index of suspicion is warranted to early diagnose echinococcosis in a patient with a travel history to endemic areas of echinococcosis.
