ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increased incidence of uveitis in children. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a time-series analysis of patient records from a national, hospital-based, French surveillance system. All children hospitalized for uveitis in France between January 2012 and March 2022 were included. The incidence of newly diagnosed uveitis per 100â000 children per trimester in France was analyzed by a quasi-Poisson regression. A cohort of children diagnosed with uveitis at Robert-Debré Hospital was used to compare the characteristics of uveitis after and before the onset of the pandemic. RESULTS: During the study period, 2492 children were hospitalized for uveitis in France. The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in March 2020, was associated with a significant increase in the occurrence of uveitis (estimated cumulative change, 44.9%; 95% CI 11.4-78.4; P < .001). The increase in the incidence of pediatric uveitis started in October 2020, while the national immunization program targeting children aged less than 18 years began in June 2021. This increase involved all forms of uveitis, regardless of location, and clincial characteristics were similar to those diagnosed before the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: Our study evidenced a significant increase in the incidence of pediatric uveitis following the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase occurred 6 months before the implementation of the national COVID-19 vaccination program for children, suggesting that the resurgence of this rare disease is independent of COVID-19 vaccination.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome for vitreoretinal surgery in children with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) and to evaluate the risk factors associated with failure. METHODS: This is a retrospective interventional case series of 43 consecutive eyes (34 patients) with vitreoretinal surgery for FEVR. Ocular status prior to intervention and at last follow-up and all surgical steps were recorded. Follow-up time was at least 6 months. Main outcome measure was surgical failure (defined as one of the following: (1) deterioration of visual acuity and stage, (2) persistence or development of total retinal detachment, (3) phthisis). RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 3.3 ± 3.4 years (median 2.3; 0.5-15.7 years), surgery was successful in 30 eyes (70%) and failed in 13 eyes (30%). Twenty-one eyes (49%) improved, 13 (30%) remained stable, and 9 (21%) deteriorated. Postoperatively, stages and VA improved significantly (p = 0.001; p = 0.04, respectively). Surgical failure was only observed on patients with stages 4 and 5. Mean macular thickness decreased significantly in eyes (stages 2 and 3) with tractional epiretinal membrane. CONCLUSION: Eyes with tractional epiretinal membrane in stages 2 and 3 seem to benefit from vitrectomy and membrane peeling with a positive risk-benefit profile. Advanced stages have a low success rate and limited functional improvement, but in selected cases, surgery seems beneficial.

IMPORTANCE: There is a limited therapeutic armamentarium for recalcitrant cases of childhood rosacea. OBSERVATIONS: We report the case of a 12-year-old girl who presented with severe ocular and cutaneous rosacea unresponsive to oral doxycycline, oral isotretinoin, and topical tacrolimus. A biopsy specimen showed numerous mites within the folliculosebaceous unit. Treatment with a single dose of oral ivermectin achieved resolution of her symptoms. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The causative role of Demodex folliculorum should be considered in immunocompetent children with rosacea or rosacea-like refractory eruptions. In such cases, treatment with ivermectin can be beneficial.
