ABSTRACT

E. faecalis has been associated with bacteremia, sepsis, and bacterial endocarditis and peri-implantitis. This microorganism can remain in the alveolus even after extraction of the root remnant. This study aimed to evaluate the corrosion on different surfaces of commercially pure titanium (Ti) grade 4 (Ticp-G4) as a function of the bacterial biofilm effect of Enterococcus faecalis. A total of 57 discs were randomly divided according to their surface finish (n = 19). For microbiological analysis (n = 9), the discs were placed in 12-well plates containing E. faecalis culture and incubated at 37 °C for 7 days. The results show that for the intergroup analysis, considering the "electrolyte" factor, there was a difference between the groups. There was greater biofilm formation for the D.A.Zir group, with greater electrochemical exchange for Biofilm, and the presence of biofilm favored greater electrochemical exchange with the medium.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of a commercial sealing agent at the abutment/implant interface against microleakage of single and dual-species biofilms of Candida albicans and Enterococcus faecalis into external hexagon (EH) and Morse taper (MT) prosthetic connections. A total of 216 samples of implants and their abutments were tested. Six groups (n = 36) were evaluated based on biofilm and period of incubation (7 and 14 days). The implant connections EH and MT (n = 18) were divided according to the use of the material (n = 9) (EH-T and MT-T: with the sealing agent; EH-C and MT-C: control). The biofilms were analyzed by microbial counting (CFU/mL) and SEM analysis and photographs of the material in the screw joints were also taken. Data were analyzed by Student t test, two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test. For the single-species biofilms, there was a significant reduction in the growth of E. faecalis when compared MT-C and MT-T or EH-C and EH-T at 7 and 14 days. The same was observed for C. albicans biofilms. For dual-species biofilms of E. faecalis and C. albicans, the sealing agent was more effective in preventing microbial infiltration into the MT connection at 14 days, while microbial infiltration did not occur into EH connections even in absence of the sealing agent for both periods of evaluation. Overall, these data suggest that the presence of the sealing agent reduces or eliminates the microleakage of E. faecalis and C. albicans biofilms into the implants regardless of the period of incubation.

ABSTRACT

For microbiological analysis (n = 9), the discs were positioned in 24-well plates containing Enterococcus faecalis culture at 1.5 x 10 5 cells / ml in broth BHI medium and incubated for 168 hours (7 days) at 37 ° C. period the discs were removed and the bacteria adhered on its surface were evaluated by means of Colony Forming Units / mL (CFU / mL) counts. For corrosive analysis (n = 5), new specimens were inoculated in the same way in E. faecalis culture and after 7 days, they were destined to the electrochemical test by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (IEE) using BHI and biofilm electrolytes and BHI sterile broth. The results were submitted to statistical analysis: microbiological (ANOVA with Tukey post test, 5%) and electrochemical test (ANOVA 2 Factors and post test Tukey 5%). In the evaluation of bacterial cell count, only D.A.Zir (mean 34 CFU / ml) differed from USI (mean 16 CFU / ml) (p = 0.034), but not D.A. (24 CFU / ml). In electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, for Nyquist and BODE, the D.A.Zir (Biofilm) group showed worse electrochemical behavior. For resistance to polarization the USI (BHI) had better ion exchange resistance with the medium. For the electrochemical study D.A.Zir (Biofilm) had the worst electrochemical behavior and the USI group (BHI) had better ability to resist ionic exchanges. It was concluded that there was a higher biofilm formation for the D.A.Zir group, with a higher electrochemical exchange for D.A.Zir (Biofilm) and the biofilm presence favored a greater electrochemical exchange with the medium(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anaesthetic failure rate of the pterygomandibular technique with an inferior alveolar nerve block in lower third molar extraction procedures. Materials and Methods: A total of 67 healthy patients (men and women, aged between 1835 years) requiring third molar extractions were selected from the Discipline of Surgery, of the Araçatuba Dental School. The anaesthetic technique utilised was a pterygomandibular block using 2% mepivacaine hydrochloride with epinephrine 1:100,000 (Mepivalem®) in a maximum standardised amount of three tubes (5.4 ml) per procedure (performed by the same operator). Surgical procedures were initiated after confirming the sensation of anaesthesia in the area anesthetised at the inferior alveolar nerve. Painful symptoms were recorded during surgery. Results: In total, 117 surgical procedures, i.e., 114 exodontias and three coronectomies, were performed. During surgical procedures, four patients reported pain during manoeuvres of odontosection, representing an anaesthetic failure rate of 3.41%. Alternative techniques utilised in these four patients involved milohioideo nerve, intraligamentaria, and intrapulpal anaesthesia. Conclusion: The success of inferior alveolar nerve block anaesthesia is difficult to predict due to large anatomical variations, and it is difficult to observe via diagnostic means. The relatively low percentage of anaesthetic failure reported in this study may be related to the number of procedures performed(AU)

ABSTRACT

The migration of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon event of occurrence. Disrespect for concepts of implantology, low alveolar bone density at the site, high incidence of masticatory force in posterior region, and clinical intercurrences predispose to failure in rehabilitation.
