ABSTRACT

Bovine mastitis is a disease wi th far - reaching consequences for the dairy industry. Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen that is especially resistant to antibiotics. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils Lippia citriodora (Lam.), Thy mus vulgaris (L), and a mixture of the essential oils Lippia citriodora and Thymus vulgaris (50/50 v/v), against isolates of oxacillin - resistant Staphylococcus aureus (n=15) of positive cases of bovine mastitis. For the statistical analysis, the IBM SPSS s tatistical package was used. The mixture of essential oils ( Lippia citriodora and Thymus vulgaris (50/50 v/v)) obtained the most significant antimicrobial activity in relation to pure essential oils. It is therefore concluded that the mixture of these oils boosts their antimicrobial activity ( p <0.05). The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration of this mixture for the total isolations was 12 µL/L and 25 µL/mL, respectively.


La mastitis bovina es una enfermedad de gran impacto para la industria lechera. El Staphylococcus aureus es uno de los principales patógenos, especialmente aquellos resistentes a los antibióticos. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la actividad antimicrobiana de los aceites esenciales de Lippia citriodora (Lam.), Thymus vulgaris (L), y una mezcla de aceites esenciales de Lippia citriodora y Thymus vulgaris (50/50 v/v), frente a aislamientos clínicos de Staph ylococcus aureus oxacilino - resistentes (n=15) de mastitis bovina. Se utilizó p rograma estadístico IBM SPSS y se concluyó la diferencia significativa a un p <0.05. La mezcla de aceites esenciales ( Lippia citriodora y Thymus vulgaris (50/50 v/v)), obtuvo la m ayor actividad antimicrobiana en relación a los aceites esenciales puros, se concluye que la mezcla de estos aceites potencia su actividad antimicrobiana ( p <0.019). La concentración mínima inhibitoria y bactericida de esta mezcla fue del 12 µL/mL y 25 µL/m L, respectivamente, y puede ser una alternativa terapéutica.

ABSTRACT

Enteric glial cells are emerging as critical players in the regulation of intestinal motility, secretion, epithelial barrier function, and gut homeostasis in health and disease. Enteric glia react to intestinal inflammation by converting to a 'reactive glial phenotype' and enteric gliosis, contributing to neuroinflammation, enteric neuropathy, bowel motor dysfunction and dysmotility, diarrhea or constipation, 'leaky gut', and visceral pain. The focus of the minireview is on the impact of inflammation on enteric glia reactivity in response to diverse insults such as intestinal surgery, ischemia, infections (C. difficile infection, HIV-Tat-induced diarrhea, endotoxemia and paralytic ileus), GI diseases (inflammatory bowel diseases, diverticular disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, colorectal cancer) and functional GI disorders (postoperative ileus, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome). Significant progress has been made in recent years on molecular pathogenic mechanisms of glial reactivity and enteric gliosis, resulting in enteric neuropathy, disruption of motility, diarrhea, visceral hypersensitivity and abdominal pain. There is a growing number of glial molecular targets with therapeutic implications that includes receptors for interleukin-1 (IL-1R), purines (P2X2R, A2BR), PPARα, lysophosphatidic acid (LPAR1), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4R), estrogen-ß receptor (ERß) adrenergic α-2 (α-2R) and endothelin B (ETBR), connexin-43 / Colony-stimulating factor 1 signaling (Cx43/CSF1) and the S100ß/RAGE signaling pathway. These exciting new developments are the subject of the minireview. Some of the findings in pre-clinical models may be translatable to humans, raising the possibility of designing future clinical trials to test therapeutic application(s). Overall, research on enteric glia has resulted in significant advances in our understanding of GI pathophysiology.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death that affects the female population worldwide. Despite advances in treatments and a greater understanding of the disease, there are still difficulties in successfully treating patients. Currently, the main challenge in the field of cancer vaccines is antigenic variability which can reduce antigen-specific T- cell response efficacy. The search for and validation of immunogenic antigen targets increased dramatically over the past few decades and, with the advent of modern sequencing techniques, permitting the fast and accurate identification of the neoantigen landscape of tumor cells, will undoubtedly continue to grow exponentially for years to come. We have previously implemented Variable Epitope Libraries (VEL) as an unconventional vaccine strategy in preclinical models and for identifying and selecting mutant epitope variants. Here, we used an alanine-based sequence to generate a 9-mer VEL-like combinatorial mimotope library G3d as a new class of vaccine immunogen. An in silico analysis of the 16,000 G3d-derived sequences revealed potential MHC-I binders and immunogenic mimotopes. We demonstrated the antitumor effect of treatment with G3d in the 4T1 murine model of breast cancer. Moreover, two different T cell proliferation screening assays against a panel of randomly selected G3d-derived mimotopes allowed the isolation of both stimulatory and inhibitory mimotopes showing differential therapeutic vaccine efficacy. Thus, the mimotope library is a promising vaccine immunogen and a reliable source for isolating molecular cancer vaccine components.

ABSTRACT

Phosphorus (P) cycling by microbial activity is highly relevant in the eutrophication of lakes. In this context, the contents of organic (Po) and inorganic (Pi) phosphorus, the activity of acid (ACP) and alkaline (ALP) phosphomonoesterase (Pase), and the abundances of bacterial Pase genes (phoD, phoC, and phoX) were studied in sediments from Budi Lake, a eutrophic coastal brackish water lake in Chile. Our results showed spatiotemporal variations in P fractions, Pase activities, and Pase gene abundances. In general, our results showed higher contents of Pi (110-144 mg kg-1), Po (512-576 mg kg-1), and total P (647-721 mg kg-1) in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites in summer compared with those values of Pi (86-127 mg kg-1), Po (363-491 mg kg-1) and total P (449-618 mg kg-1) in less anthropogenized sampling sites in winter. In concordance, sediments showed higher Pase activities (µg nitrophenyl phosphate g-1 h-1) in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites (9.7-22.7 for ACP and 5.9 to 9.6 for ALP) compared with those observed in less anthropogenized sampling sites in winter (4.2-12.9 for ACP and 0.3 to 6.7 for ALP). Higher abundances (gene copy g-1 sediment) of phoC (8.5-19 × 108), phoD (9.2-47 × 106), and phoX (8.5-26 × 106) genes were also found in sediments from the more anthropogenized sampling sites in summer compared with those values of phoC (0.1-1.1 × 108), phoD (1.4-2.4 × 106) and phoX (0.7-1.2 × 106) genes in the less anthropogenized sites in winter. Our results also showed a positive correlation between P contents, Pase activities, and abundances of bacterial Pase genes, independent of seasonality. The present study provided information on the microbial activity involved in P cycling in sediments of Budi Lake, which may be used in further research as indicators for the monitoring of eutrophication of lakes.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have demonstrated that acute colonic inflammation leads to an increase in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neuronal excitability. However, the signaling elements implicated in this hyperexcitability have yet to be fully unraveled. Extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) is a well-recognized sensory signaling molecule that enhances the nociceptive response after inflammation through activation of P2X3 receptors, which are expressed mainly by peripheral sensory neurons. The aim of this study is to continue investigating how P2X3 affects neuronal hypersensitivity in an acute colitis animal model. To achieve this, DNBS (Dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid; 200 mg/kg) was intrarectally administered to C57BL/6 mice, and inflammation severity was assessed according to the following parameters: weight loss, macroscopic and microscopic scores. Perforated patch clamp technique was used to evaluate neuronal excitability via measuring changes in rheobase and action potential firing in T8-L1 DRG neurons. A-317491, a well-established potent and selective P2X3 receptor antagonist, served to dissect their contribution to recorded responses. Protein expression of P2X3 receptors in DRG was evaluated by western blotting and immunofluorescence. Four days post-DNBS administration, colons were processed for histological analyses of ulceration, crypt morphology, goblet cell density, and immune cell infiltration. DRG neurons from DNBS-treated mice were significantly more excitable compared with controls; these changes correlated with increased P2X3 receptor expression. Furthermore, TNF-α mRNA expression was also significantly higher in inflamed colons compared to controls. Incubation of control DRG neurons with TNF-α resulted in similar cell hyperexcitability as measured in DNBS-derived neurons. The selective P2X3 receptor antagonist, A-317491, blocked the TNF-α-induced effect. These results support the hypothesis that TNF-α enhances colon-innervating DRG neuron excitability via modulation of P2X3 receptor activity.

ABSTRACT

The identification of novel targets for cancer immunotherapy and the development of new vaccine immunogens are subjects of permanent interest. MUC1 is an overexpressed antigen found in most tumors, and its overexpression correlates with poor prognosis. Many attempts to direct the immune response against MUC1 in tumor cells have failed, including several clinical trials. We have previously developed an innovative Variable Epitope Library (VEL) vaccine platform that carries massively substituted mutant variants of defined epitopes or epitope regions as an alternative to using wild-type peptide sequences-based immunogens. Here, two murine MUC1-derived epitopes equivalent to the previously tested in cancer immunotherapy human MUC1 regions were used to generate VELs. We observed that vaccination with the 23L VEL immunogens, encompassing the entire signal peptide region of MUC1, reduces the tumor area compared to the wild-type sequence treatment. Contrastingly, vaccination with the MUC1 signal peptide-derived predicted CD8++ T cell epitope-based VEL, 9MUC1spL, showed similar tumor area reduction as the wild-type treatment; however, a decrease in lung metastasis after 9MUC1spL treatment was observed. In addition, vaccination induced a large pool of CD8+ T cells which recognized most variant epitopes from 9MUC1spL. Also, we generated MUC1 variable number tandem repeat (VNTR)-based VELs that reduced the metastatic burden when dendritic cells and M13 recombinant bacteriophages were used as vaccine carriers. Collectively, our data demonstrate the immunogenic and antitumor properties of MUC1 signal peptide- and VNTR-derived VEL immunogens.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a robust method to estimate polymers' damping, based on modal identification methods on frequency functions. The proposed method presents great advantages compared to other traditional methods such as the HPB method for polymeric materials where high damping or noise levels can limit their use. Specifically, this new method is applied on an experimental transmissibility function measured in a composite cantilever beam and the complex modulus is determined as a function of frequency. From this, a regenerated function is obtained based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and it is compared with experimental data. It can be concluded that the best way to apply the curve-fitting method for further testing of polymeric materials is when it is used with the whole frequency range by means of the MDOF method considering the residuals. In addition, this has the added advantage that the number of experimental tests to be carried out is much lower compared to using the SDOF method.

RESUMEN La complejidad e incertidumbre de transformar los sistemas de producción agrícola futuros en sistemas sostenibles requiere de evaluaciones holísticas y prospectivas, que involucren las interacciones dinámicas, entre agricultura, economía, sociedad y medio ambiente. En este sentido, se requieren modelos holísticos, que incluyan la prospectiva estratégica y el desarrollo territorial en la evaluación de la sostenibilidad de estos sistemas, a escala regional. Este documento, a través de análisis bibliográfico 1) identifica los avances en prospectiva estratégica, ordenación territorial y evaluaciones de impacto territorial en el contexto agrícola y los enfoques integrales de evaluación de la sostenibilidad agrícola a escala regional y 2) genera las bases para una nueva aproximación de la evaluación de la sostenibilidad del sistema agrícola a escala regional y del desarrollo territorial, con base en los avances identificados. Los resultados muestran que la prospectiva estratégica, la ordenación del territorio y las evaluaciones de impacto territorial han avanzado en un enfoque integral proporcionando, además, una visión y evaluación estratégica de los sistemas. Así, también, se mencionan como factores de éxito, el establecimiento de una buena gobernanza, la co-creación de los escenarios estratégicos, el uso de unidades homogéneas en la planificación, una amplia disponibilidad de datos ambientales y sociales con resolución espacial y temporal y la inclusión de nuevas herramientas analíticas y computacionales. La proyección del trabajo vincula los objetivos de la evaluación de los sistemas agrícolas para el desarrollo territorial sostenible, en un marco de acción integral.


ABSTRACT The complexity and uncertainty of transforming future agricultural production systems into sustainable systems require holistic and prospective evaluations that understand the dynamic interactions between agriculture, the economy, society, and the environment. In this sense, holistic models need that include strategic foresight and territorial development in evaluating the sustainability of these systems on a regional scale. This document, through bibliographic analysis: 1) identifies the advances in strategic foresight, land use planning, and land impact assessments in the agricultural context and comprehensive approaches to assessing agricultural sustainability at a regional scale; and, 2) it generates the bases for a new approach to the evaluation of the sustainability of the agricultural system on a regional scale and territorial development based on the advances identified. The results show that strategic foresight, spatial planning, and territorial impact evaluations have advanced in a comprehensive approach, providing a vision and strategic evaluation of the systems. The establishment of good governance, the co-creation of strategic scenarios, homogeneous units in planning, the wide availability of environmental and social data with a spatial and temporal resolution, and the inclusion of new ones are considered success factors-analytical and computational tools. The projection of the work links the objectives of the evaluation of agricultural systems for sustainable territorial development in a comprehensive action framework.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency (AADCd) is an ultra-rare genetic neurometabolic disorder caused by mutations in the DDC gene. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective, noninterventional study was designed to describe the burden of AADCd including the associated healthcare resource utilization in Southern Europe. METHODS: Eleven clinicians completed a patient case study survey for patients with AADCd currently or previously under their care, followed by an interview with each clinician to assess healthcare resource utilization, patient characteristics, and symptoms. RESULTS: Clinicians provided data for 20 patients with AADCd, of whom 60% were male. All patients experienced movement disorders, 90% exhibited developmental delay, 85% reported sleeping problems, and 80% experienced gastrointestinal problems. The symptoms varied with disease severity. Patients with AADCd received care from more than 16 different specialists including both medical and paramedical healthcare professionals. Hospitalizations and visits to accident and emergency departments were also frequent. CONCLUSION: In terms of symptoms and healthcare resource utilization, the burden of illness of AADCd is substantial. This study provides insights into several aspects of the disease that are difficult to ascertain from published case reports.

ABSTRACT

The ability to synchronize a motor action to a rhythmic auditory stimulus is often considered an innate human skill. However, some individuals lack the ability to synchronize speech to a perceived syllabic rate. Here, we describe a simple and fast protocol to classify a single native English speaker as being or not being a speech synchronizer. This protocol consists of four parts: the pretest instructions and volume adjustment, the training procedure, the execution of the main task, and data analysis. ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Lepidium virginicum L. (Brassicaceae) is a plant widely used in traditional Mexican medicine as an expectorant, diuretic, and as a remedy to treat diarrhea and dysentery, infection-derived gastroenteritis. However, there is no scientific study that validates its clinical use as an anti-inflammatory in the intestine. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of the ethanolic extract of Lepidium virginicum L. (ELv) in an animal model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-like colitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (DNBS) animal model of IBD was used. Colitis was induced by intrarectal instillation of 200 mg/kg of DNBS dissolved vehicle, 50% ethanol. Control rats only received the vehicle. Six hours posterior to DNBS administration, ELv (3, 30, or 100 mg/kg) was administered daily by gavage or intraperitoneal injection. The onset and course of the inflammatory response were monitored by assessing weight loss, stool consistency, and fecal blood. Colonic damage was evaluated by colon weight/length ratio, histopathology, colonic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1ß), chemokine C-X-C motif ligand 1 (CXCL-1), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). RESULTS: Rats treated with DNBS displayed significant weight loss, diarrhea, fecal blood, colon shortening, a significant increase in immune cell infiltration and MPO activity, as well as increased proinflammatory cytokine expression. Intraperitoneal administration of ELv significantly reduced colon inflammation, whereas oral treatment proved to be ineffective. In fact, intraperitoneal ELv significantly attenuated the clinical manifestations of colitis, immune cell infiltration, MPO activity, and pro-inflammatory (CXCL-1, TNF-α, and IL-1ß) gene expression in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: Traditional medicine has employed ELv as a remedy for common infection-derived gastrointestinal symptoms; however, we hereby present the first published study validating its anti-inflammatory properties in the mitigation of DNBS-induced colitis.

ABSTRACT

A rehabilitation option for non-carious cervical lesions is through composite resins, however, these present difficulties due to biological and clinical factors, which can affect the adhesion mechanism. The adhesives can be used under the etch and rinse protocol, as well as self-etch, the latter have simplified steps in order to reduce clinical time without affecting the quality of the restoration. Despite the development of new adhesive materials, they still have flaws. Through this systematic review, we seek to determine which adhesive protocol has a better clinical behavior compared to the marginal integrity of composite resins in non-carious cervical lesions, in order to obtain better clinical results and avoid treatment failure. Three databases were examined: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using predefined search criteria: P: Patients in need of LCNC restorations, I: Composite resins bonded with self-etch adhesives, C: Composite resins bonded with etch and rinse adhesives, O: Marginal integrity (adaptation and marginal staining). We carry out the selection of articles and the extraction of data in duplicate and independently. The process was predefined and piloted by PRISMA guidelines. Based on the evidence, we have determined the adhesive system that presents the best clinical performance in terms of staining and marginal adaptation, establishing that 2-step self-etch adhesives present the same performance as 3-step etch and rinse adhesives, however the latter deliver less staining of the restoration margins.


Una opción rehabilitadora de lesiones cervicales no cariosas es a través de resinas compuestas, sin embargo, estas presentan dificultades debido a factores biológicos y clínicos, los cuales pueden afectar el mecanismo de adhesión.  Los adhesivos podemos utilizarlos bajo el protocolo de grabado y  enjuague, como también de autograbado, estos últimos han simplificado pasos con el fin de reducir tiempo clínico sin afectar la calidad de la restauración. A pesar del desarrollo de nuevos materiales adhesivos, aún presentan fallas. A través de esta revisión sistemática buscamos determinar que protocolo adhesivo presenta un mejor comportamiento clínico frente a la integridad marginal de resinas compuestas en lesiones cervicales no cariosas, con el fin de obtener mejores resultados clínicos y evitar el fracaso del tratamiento. Se examinaron tres bases de datos: PubMed, Scopus y Web of Science, utilizando criterios de búsqueda predefinidos: P: Pacientes con necesidad de restauraciones LCNC,  I: Resinas compuestas adheridas con adhesivos autograbantes, C: Resinas compuestas adheridas con adhesivos de grabado y enjuague, O: Integridad marginal (adaptación y tinción marginal). Realizamos la selección de artículos y la extracción de datos en duplicado y de forma independiente. El proceso fue predefinido y piloteado por lineamientos PRISMA. Según la evidencia, hemos determinado el sistema adhesivo que presenta mejor desempeño clínico en cuanto a tinción y adaptación marginal, estableciendo que los adhesivos de autograbado de 2 pasos presentan el mismo rendimiento que los adhesivos de grabado y enjuague de 3 pasos, sin embargo estos últimos entregan menor tinción de los márgenes de la restauración.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Plant species diversity may be seriously threatened in ecotone zones under global climate change. Therefore, keeping updated inventories of indicator species seems to be a good strategy for monitoring wild areas located in these strips. The database comes from an inventory of climbers and vascular epiphytes conducted in the Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, a small protected area (89 hectares) located in Chile's Mediterranean-temperate phytogeographic region, within the boundaries of the city of Temuco, La Araucaína Region.The data represent the update of the first inventory carried out between 1980 and 1984. In this current contribution, data collection was carried out in 27 quadrats using the trails as transects. The data provide the record of 45 species (16 climbers, 15 epiphytes and 10 trees), including two accidental epiphytes (Acerpsudoplatanus L. and Gavileaodoratissima (L.) Endl. ex Griseb.), two species that can be found as epiphytes or terricolous (Hymenophyllumtunbrigense (L.) Sm. and Nerteragranadensis (Mutis ex L.f.) Druce) and one species (Chusqueaquila Kunth) that can be found as terricolous and climber. Species of interest were recorded on live trees (n = 51), snags (n = 9), stumps (n = 4), fallen log (n = 5) and on the forest soil (n = 17).The most abundant climbers were Hydrangeaserratifolia (Hook. & Arn.) F. Phil. (n = 77 stems), Lapageria rosea Ruiz & Pav. (n = 70 stems), Raukauavaldiviensis (Gay) Frodin (n = 48 stems) and Cissusstriata Ruiz & Pav. (n = 33 stems). In contrast, the most abundant epiphytes were Hymenophyllumplicatum Kaulf. (n = 1728 fronds) and Hymenophyllumtunbrigense (L.) Sm. (n = 2375 fronds). These latter two species represent the highest frequency and abundance in the whole inventory, respectively. Several ecosystem traits are, in fact, new reports since the first inventory was conducted in 1980-1984; for example, the presence of the filmy fern Hymenophyllumtunbrigense, the record of the climber Elytropuschilensis , fallen logs or the species-host relationship. Accordingly, the database is made available in this manuscript. NEW INFORMATION: This study updates the climbers and vascular epiphyte species list in the Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, a small patch of forest under severe anthropogenic pressure. This protected area is characterised by floristic elements of the Mediterranean and temperate phytogeographic region of Chile, in a zone where forests have been severely deforested. The database includes the record of 45 species - including six species that were not recorded in the first inventory - in 211 records.The main novelty of this contribution is the systematic classification of species, on ten traits rarely reported in a floristic inventory: (i) species taxonomic identity (as usual), (ii) species abundance (number of stems and fronds), (iii) habit (herb, shrub, subshrub, tree), (iv) growth form (accidental epiphyte, epiphyte, vine, liana, terricolous), (v) climbing mechanism (tendrils, adhesive roots, twining, scrambling), (vi) microhabitat (fallen log, footpath slope, soil, stump, trunk), (vii) host species (where appropriate), (viii) host condition (live, woody debris, snag), (ix) host diameter at breast height (DBH) and (x) target species found over 2.3 m on trees.Thirty years after the first inventory conducted between 1980 and 1984, the climber assemblage has remained relatively stable over time, although there are some differences in species composition. Specifically, the climber Elytropuschilensis are recorded in the current inventory, but the Mitrariacoccinea (recorded in the first inventory) is not present. On the other hand, the epiphyte assemblage showed an increase in the species richness of filmy ferns, with five previously unrecorded species: Hymenophyllumcuneatum, H.dicranotrichum, H.pectinatum, H.peltatum and H.tunbrigense. One of the novel features was the presence of Sarmientascandens and Synammiafeuillei on a Pinusradiata D. Don tree. Additionally, the introduced species Acerpseudoplatanus is included, which is new to the Chilean vascular plant catalogue. All these data are available in the present manuscript.

ABSTRACT

After decades of cancer vaccine efforts, there is an imperious necessity for novel ideas that may result in better tumor control in patients. We have proposed the use of a novel Variable Epitope Library (VEL) vaccine strategy, which incorporates an unprecedented number of mutated epitopes to target antigenic variability and break tolerance against tumor-associated antigens. Here, we used an oncofetal antigen/immature laminin receptor protein-derived sequence to generate 9-mer and 43-mer VEL immunogens. 4T1 tumor-bearing mice developed epitope-specific CD8+IFN-γ+ and CD4+IFN-γ+ T cell responses after treatment. Tumor and lung analysis demonstrated that VELs could increase the number of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes with diverse effector functions while reducing the number of immunosuppressive myeloid-derived suppressor and regulatory T cells. Most importantly, VEL immunogens inhibited tumor growth and metastasis after a single dose. The results presented here are consistent with our previous studies and provide evidence for VEL immunogens' feasibility as promising cancer immunotherapy.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to characterize the mechanical behavior of corrugated cardboard boxes using simple models that allow an approach to the load capacity and the deformation of the boxes. This is very interesting during a box design stage, in which the box does not exist yet. On the one hand, a mathematical model of strength and deformation of boxes with different geometry is obtained from experiments according to the Box Compression Test and Edge Crush Test standards. On the second hand, a finite element simulation is proposed in which only the material elastic modulus in the compression direction is needed. For that, corrugated cardboard sheets are glued to build billets for testing, and an equivalent elastic modulus is obtained. This idea arises from the fact that the collapse of the box is given by the local bucking of the corrugated cardboard panels, due to the slenderness itself, and the properties in the compression direction are predominant. As a result, the numerical models show satisfactory agreement with experiments, concluding that it is an adequate methodology to simulate in a simple and efficient way this type of boxes built with corrugated cardboard.

ABSTRACT

Is brain structure related to function? Can one predict the other? These are questions that are still waiting to be answered definitively. In this paper we seek to investigate these questions, in particular, we are interested in the relation between brain structure and theory of mind (ToM). ToM is defined as the ability to attribute mental states to others. Previous studies have observed correlations between performance on ToM tasks, and gray-matter size/volume in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and precuneus (PCu). Despite these findings, there are concerns about false positive results and replicability issues. In this study we used two different tasks to evaluate ToM, Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), and the Short Story Task (SST). Performance in these tasks was correlated to brain anatomy measures including voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and cortical thickness (CT) analysis, from ninety-one neurotypical participants. High-resolution structural brain images were acquired, and whole-brain and region of interest (ROI) analyses were implemented. The analyses did not show statistically significant associations between ToM performance and brain structural measures after correction. Significant associations between performance on ToM tests and a widespread array of regions loosely associated with ToM were observed only for whole brain uncorrected analysis (p < 0.001). These results do not replicate a previous study with neurotypical participants. We tested two different ToM tests, two different softwares for VBM and CT, and we used two samples, one with 91 and a sub-sample with 69 participants. Neither of these conditions made a difference in the results obtained. Consequently, these results suggest that if the population is neurotypical and homogenous, it is unlikely that a reliable association between brain anatomy measures and ToM performance, as measured with these tasks, may be found.

BACKGROUND: Species lists are fundamental for knowledge of species diversity in regions subject to intense anthropogenic pressure, especially in poorly-studied ecosystems. The dataset comes from an inventory conducted in 30 fragments of Myrtaceae swamp forest, located in an agroforestry matrix landscape of the coastal La Araucanía Region in Chile. The data collection was carried out using line transect sampling, which was traced through the core of each fragment orientated towards its longest axis. The dataset provides a record of 55 species (24 trees, 1 vine [as a host], 16 herbs and 15 shrubs) including accidental epiphytes (n = 7), hemiparasites (n = 4), host (n = 10) and additionally woody debris (n = 36). The most frequent trees in the landscape were Myrceugenia exsucca (n = 36 records) and Blepharocalyx cruckshanksii (n = 33 records), species that were also the most common hosts. Drimys winteri was a companion species, other trees and shrubs generally being rarely observed, as was the case of the introduced species (Prunus avium, Rubus constrictus and Ulex europaeus). Branches were the most common microhabitat for hemiparasites. Within this group, Lepidoceras chilense was the most frequent species. For accidental epiphytes, Drimys winteri, which commonly grows on the ground (soil), were the most common species found in the main trunk crotch. Some unusual observations were the climber Cissus striata as host of Tristerix corymbosus (hemiparasite) and Tristerix corymbosus as host of Lepidoceras chilense (hemiparasite). NEW INFORMATION: This study represents a landscape-scale sample of the swamp forest, which is distributed in a dispersed pattern over a large stretch of Chile. The data were collected from 30 forest patches (from 0.05 to 936 ha), located on the coast of the Araucanía. The database includes the presence of 55 species of vascular plants in 356 records. The main novelty of this contribution is the systematic classification of species under six traits, never before reported in the same database: (i) condition (coarse woody debris, fallen log, live, snag), (ii) habit (herb, shrub, tree), (iii) growth microhabitat (e.g. tree trunk, branch, main trunk crotch), (iv) growth form (accidental epiphyte, hemiparasite, terricolous, vegetative), (v) host species (as appropriate) and (vi) relative location of the species in the sampled patch and surrounding areas (core, border, matrix). Species not previously observed in these forests were: Gavilea spp., Hieracium spp., Lophosoria quadripinnata, Berberis actinacantha, Gaultheria phillyreifolia, Ovidia pillo-pillo, Amomyrtus meli and Caldcluvia paniculata. In addition, two introduced species are novelties for the catalogue of vascular plants of Chile (Cupressus macrocarpa and Prunus avium). Several of these ecosystem traits are indeed new reports for these types of forests (e.g. accidental epiphytes, fallen logs, species-host relationship); at the same time, more frequent data (i.e. species composition, habit) are found in different contributions, making the comprehensive process of analysis difficult. Accordingly, the database is made available in this manuscript.

ABSTRACT

The dataset shows the relationship and valuation of the coastal dunes of the Araucanía region in Chile. The valuation of the local population was surveyed using a questionnaire applied to 49 subjects belonging to Mapuche communities and local government. The data consists of eight tables that show a list of questions, the number of times per year that visit the dunes, cultural practices carried out in the dunes, valuation of ecosystem services provided by the coastal dunes, and knowledge about flora and fauna. Lastly, the original questionnaire and its responses in Spanish and English are included in supplemantary material. This dataset was generated within the framework of the manuscript "Ecosystem services and uses of dune systems of the coast of the Araucanía Region, Chile: a perception study" where 23 leaders of Mapuche communities and 26 representatives of the local government were interviewed. The dataset can be used to compare the valuation of ecosystems by local communities, especially when quantitative data are scarce or do not exist.
