ABSTRACT

Three novel acetalophanes 1a-c have been designed, synthesized and characterized. The receptors 1b-c, featuring bulky anthracene groups, displayed significant selectivity for Fe3+ ions, resulting in a turn-off fluorescence mode in a DMF-buffer solution. Conversely, the non-steric probe 1a could serve as a versatile sensor for the simultaneous detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in MeOH-buffer solution. The sensing mechanism for the capability of 1a was demonstrated to be different, as evidenced by the addition of cyanide ions. The probes with Fe3+ exhibited a sensing mechanism that resulted in the deprotection of acetals to the corresponding starting materials, as confirmed by 1H NMR, IR spectra and TLC analysis. The attractive features of these practical and efficient sensors are selectivity, sensitivity (limit of detection = 0.15 µM by 1a, 0.16 µM by 1b and 0.14 µM by 1c), rapid response (less than 5 s). The on-site monitoring of various real samples, including well water, apricot, and green tea, proved to be successful for the quantitative and cost-effective detection of Fe3+. The method demonstrated good precision, even in the presence of other interfering materials.

ABSTRACT

The fluorescence detection of ions and pharmaceutical effluents by using organic chemosensors is a valuable surrogate to the currently existing expensive analytical methods. In this regard, the design of multi-functional chemosensors to recognize desirable guests is of utmost importance. In this study, we first show that levofloxacin (LVO) is able to use as a fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of biologically important Cu2+ (turn-off) and Fe3+ (turn-on) ions via independent signal outputs in 100% aqueous buffer solutions. Next, using the reciprocal recognition of LVO and Fe3+ provides a unique emission pattern for the detection of LVO. This approach exhibited a high specificity to LVO among various pharmaceutical samples, namely acetaminophen (AC), azithromycin (AZ), gemifloxacin (GEM) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) and also showed great anti-interference property in urine. The attractive features of this sensing system are availability, easy-to-use, high sensitivity (limit of detection = 18 nM for Cu2+, 22 nM for Fe3+ and 0.12 nM for LVO), rapid response (5 s) with an excellent selectivity. Levofloxacin (LVO) is able to use as a fluorescent chemosensor for the detection of Cu2+ (turn-off) and Fe3+ (turn-on) ions via independent signal outputs. Moreover, using the reciprocal recognition of LVO and Fe3+ a unique emission pattern for the detection of LVO was achieved which is applicable for biological samples. The attractive features of this sensing system are availability, easy-to-use, high sensitivity, rapid response (5 s) with an excellent selectivity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Being one of the most common indications of labor induction, postdate pregnancy can lead to serious maternal and fetal complications. In this study we aimed to compare vaginal misoprostol with intracervical Foley catheter (FC) for cervical ripening in postdate primigravid women. METHODS: This randomized clinical trial included 120 primigravid women aged 18-35 years with singleton,  postdate pregnancies, and Bishop score ≤ 4. Participants were randomized into two equal groups. The first group received 25 µg vaginal misoprostol and the second group had an 18 Fr FC inserted into their cervical canal. Labor induction was performed using oxytocin in both groups if progression of labor or true contractions did not occur within 6 h of the interventions. In case of nonreassuring fetal heart rate, fetal distress, placental abruption, or prolonged labor, C-section was performed. RESULTS: The frequency of normal vaginal delivery, Cesarean section, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, and neonatal intensive care unit admission did not differ significantly between groups. Placental abruption and uterine tachysystole occurred more frequently in the misoprostol group (15.0 vs. 1.7%, P = 0.008 and 21.7 vs. 0.0%, P < 0.001, respectively). A significantly higher number of women in the FC group required oxytocin (73.3 vs. 41.7%, P < 0.001). Duration of labor was significantly higher in the FC group (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Due to the lower rate of placental abruption and uterine tachysystole observed with FC, it appears to be superior to vaginal misoprostol for cervical ripening in postdate primigravid women; however, its longer labor duration and higher oxytocin requirement should be taken into consideration. ABSTRACT

Three tweezershaped salophenes having catechols (1), phenols (2) and anisoles (3) units in conjunction to the dipodal Schiff bases have been applied for the optical sensing of cyanide (CN¯) ions in CH3CN-H2O (7:3) as solvent of choice. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 recognized CN¯, relying on distinct color and spectral changes. They are easy-to-use probes that exhibit extremely high sensitivity (limit of detection = 1-10 nM), rapid response (5 s) and excellent selectivity. Moreover, the visual detection and concentration determination of CN¯ by solution test kits of both sensors are the advantages for the practical applications. Based on the fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy, as well as the OH¯ and reversibility experiments, the explicit effect of hydroxyl groups on sensing and as well the different recognition of 1 and 2 toward CN¯ ions was proved. While probe 1 senses CN¯ via deprotonation, probe 2 recognizes it through an intramolecular aldimine condensation cyclization, leading to formation of anions of dihydroxyquinoxaline 4. This chemodosimetry is being reported for the first time in a Schiff's base. Furthermore, the similarity of fluorescence and NMR responses of 2 and 4 toward CN¯ supports the proposed process.

ABSTRACT

Nanoparticles N,N'-(pyridine-2,6-diyl)bis(2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetamide) (1) exhibited an "on-off" emission response toward cyanide (CN-) ions in 100% aqueous solutions based on AIE features. AIEgen 1 is an easy-to-use probe that exhibits rapid response (5 s), extremely high sensitivity (limit of detection = 8.2 nM) and excellent selectivity. The sensing performance of CN- through a test kit and bitter seed solutions was good. The experimental results show that compound 1 is planar and can self-assemble into a supramolecular system and show blue emission. Then, CN- destroys both hydrogen bonds and the aggregates of 1 and quenches the emission. This process is reversible upon the addition of HCl solution.

ABSTRACT

A novel chemosensor 1 based on a naphthol-bisthiazolopyridine hybrid was synthesized and characterized. Among the various screened cations and anions, chemosensor 1 selectively recognized Ag+ and CN- ions by relying on the color change and distinct absorption and emission changes. Moreover, the probe 1·Ag+ was well operable for the selective monitoring of S2-, HS- and H2S as evidenced by the different color and optical changes. The selective detection of all the anions was simply based on the breakage of the intramolecular hydrogen bonding of 1, followed by the protonation or deprotonation mechanism. In general, chemosensor 1 is a promising indicator in terms of its ease-of-use, selectivity, sensitivity, and rapid response (<1 s). Moreover, the visual detection and concentration determination of these analytes by solution or solid kits are the advantages for the practical applications of this sensor.

ABSTRACT

Occurrence of phthalates in water resources, bottled water, and tap water, and health risk of exposure to the phthalates through drinking water in Tehran, Iran, 2018 were studied. The six phthalates with the most health and environmental concerns, including di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) were monitored in drinking water and water resources. The average levels (±standard deviation: SD) of the total phthalates in drinking water from the water distribution system, bottled water, surface waters, and ground waters were determined to be 0.76 ±â€¯0.19, 0.96 ±â€¯0.10, 1.06 ±â€¯0.23, and 0.77 ±â€¯0.06 µg/L, respectively. The dominant compounds in the phthalates were DMP and DEHP causing a contribution to the total phthalate levels higher than 60% in all the water sources. The phthalate levels of drinking water significantly increased by contact of hot water with disposable plastic and paper cups and by sunlight exposure of bottled water (p value < 0.05). The hazard quotients (HQs) of DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DEP for all ages both sexes combined were determined to be 1.56 × 10-4, 1.01 × 10-5, 1.80 × 10-5, and 1.29 × 10-6, respectively that were much lower than the boundary value of 1.0. The disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and DALY rate (per 100,000 people) attributable to DEHP intake through drinking water for all ages both sexes combined were estimated to be 6.385 (uncertainty interval: UI 95% 1.892 to 22.133), and 0.073 (0.022-0.255), respectively. The proportion of mortality in the attributable DALYs was over 96%. The attributable DALY rate exhibited no significant difference by sex, but was considerably affected by age in a manner that the DALY rates ranged from 0.052 (0.015-0.175) in the age group 65 y plus to 0.099 (0.026-0.304) in the age group 5 to 9 y. Both the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks of the phthalates in drinking water were considered to be very low. The results can also be of importance in terms of developing frameworks to expand the domain of burden of disease study to the other environmental risks.

ABSTRACT

The adipocytokines and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) are involved in insulin resistance, the cardiometabolic syndrome, and atherosclerosis. Therefore, investigating the relationship between circulating levels of the novel adipocytokines and IGF-1 is worthwhile. The correlation between IGF-1, visfatin, and omentin-1 has not been adequately investigated. In a population-based study, 324 postmenopausal women were randomly selected. Circulating IGF-1, visfatin, omentin-1, adiponectin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured with the highly specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. In multiple regression analyses adjusted for alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and hs-CRP, circulating IGF-1 was significantly correlated with visfatin levels (standardized ß coefficient [ß] = 0.13, partial correlation coefficient [r] = 0.12, p = 0.028). The significant positive correlation between serum IGF-1 and visfatin levels remained after additional adjustments for age and BMI (ß = 0.12, r = 0.12, p = 0.025), metabolic syndrome (ß = 0.13, r = 0.12, p = 0.021), and type 2 diabetes mellitus (ß = 0.13, r = 0.12, p = 0.026). No significant correlations were found between IGF-1, adiponectin, and omentin-1. There is a significant correlation between serum IGF-1 and visfatin levels in postmenopausal women beyond metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, bone formation markers, and hs-CRP levels. The observed correlation between higher circulating IGF-1 and the higher visfatin levels might be a physiological compensation and adaptation to protect against visfatin-induced proinflammatory effects.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The objective of this population-based, large sample size study was to investigate the socioeconomic inequality of overweight and obesity among the elderly in Iran. METHODS: Baseline data of 3000 persons aged ≥60 years who participated in the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program was analyzed. Overweight and obesity were defined as a body mass index (BMI) equal to or higher than 25 and 30, respectively. Socioeconomic status (SES) was measured by an asset index, constructed using principal component analysis, income, education level, and employment status. The Concentration Index and the Lorenz curve were used to illustrate the levels of inequality for overweight and obesity by gender. RESULTS: The frequencies among men and women were, respectively, 840 (57.7%) and 1131 (73.2%), P < 0.001, for overweight, and 211 (14.7%) and 511 (33.7%), P < 0.001, for obesity. There were direct associations between asset index quintiles and both overweight and obesity among both genders (Ps for trend <0.01) except for obesity among men (P for trend = 0.118). The overall Concentration Indices for overweight and obesity were 0.031 (95%CI = 0.016-0.046, P < 0.001) and 0.041 (95%CI = 0.004-0.078, p = 0.028), respectively. CONCLUSION: Findings support the direct relationship between SES and obesity among women as previously reported in developing countries.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with ß-thalassemia major (TM) develop iron overload through increased iron absorption and transfusional therapy and it's the most important complication of TM. Thalassemia is common in coastal regions and lands with low altitudes. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of high and low altitude on serum ferritin and treatment requirement in two groups of ß-thalassemia major (TM) patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups, the first group (No: 50) living at sea level (in the port of Bushehr, Iran) and the second group (No: 40) living at the altitude of 2061 m (in the city of Shahrekord, Iran). All patient's clinical history, blood transfusion and laboratory tests including complete blood count and hemoglobin electrophoresis were reviewed. RESULTS: There were no significant difference in ferritin levels, transfusion period and diabetes incidence of the two cities patients (P>0.05). Patient's cardiac function and liver condition were significantly better in patients of Bushehr (P<0.05). Patients under 20 years in Bushehr were less splenectomized in comparison with Shahrekord (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Our result showed that some of clinical manifestations of patients in low altitude such as cardiac and liver condition were better. But it did not affect ferritin level probably due to transfusion and chelating therapy. Totally patients of Bushehr had better conditions and had longer survivals.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: There is growing evidence that supports the existence of a link between lower levels of circulating omentin-1 and the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis. However, no population-based study has been performed to elucidate the cardioprotective role of this beneficial adipocytokine. METHODS: A total of 378 healthy, postmenopausal women were randomly selected from 13 clusters in the port city of Bushehr, Iran. The prevalence of nonfatal ischemic heart disease (IHD) was assessed using the Minnesota code with a 12-lead resting electrocardiogram (EKG). EKG with evidence of IHD (IHD-EKG) was defined as myocardial infarction (codes 1.1 and 1.2) and ischemia (codes 1.3, 4.1 to 4.4, 5.1 to 5.3, and 7.1) occurring together. Serum omentin-1 and adiponectin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. RESULTS: The prevalence of IHD-EKG among the studied population was 41.8% (159 women). Serum levels of omentin-1 were significantly lower in women with ischemic EKG than in normal subjects (geometric mean ×/multiplicative standard deviation, 10.31 ×/2.35 ng/mL versus 12.44 ×/2.12 ng/mL, respectively; P = .038). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that higher serum levels of omentin-1 were significantly associated with a lower prevalence of ischemic EKG after adjusting for potential confounders, including classical cardiovascular risk factors and circulating adiponectin levels (odds ratio, 0.48; confidence interval, 0.24 to 0.95; P = .038). CONCLUSION: A higher level of circulating omentin-1 is independently associated with a lower prevalence of nonfatal IHD in postmenopausal women. The cardioprotective role of this novel adipocytokine needs to be further elucidated in large-scale longitudinal studies. ABBREVIATIONS: BMI = body mass index EKG = electrocardiogram ELISA = enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay HDL = high-density lipoprotein IHD = ischemic heart disease LDL = low-density lipoprotein.

ABSTRACT

Some adipocytokines are cardioprotective or pro-inflammatory for cardiovascular system. Chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori has been also considered as novel risk factors for atherosclerosis. The main aim of the current population-based study is to investigate the potential link between circulating adipocytokines and Chlamydia pneumoniae or Helicobacter pylori IgG seropositivities. A total of 250 healthy postmenopausal women who participated in a prospective cohort study were evaluated for IgG antibodies directed against C.pneumoniae and H. pylori. Omentin-1, visfatin, adiponectin, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein were measured by highly specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. The prevalence of IgG antibodies against C. pneumoniae and H. pylori among the studied population was 20.4% (51 women) and 57.2% (143 women), respectively. There were no significant differences in adipocytokine levels between H. pylori IgG seropositive and H. pylori seronegative subjects. Similar results for visfatin and omentin-1 were found when C. pneumoniae IgG seropositive were compared with C. pneumoniae IgG seronegative subjects. However, in general linear model adjusted for age, body mass index and hs-CRP levels revealed significant difference between C. pneumoniae seropositive and C. pneumoniae seronegative subjects for circulating adiponectin. In conclusion, Chlamydia pneumoniae IgG seropositivity was associated with higher adiponectin levels in postmenopausal women. The elucidation of interaction mechanism of Chlamydia pneumoniae and a cardioprotective adipocytokine (adiponectin) will be useful in future therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

The potential link between infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae or Helicobacter pylori and osteoporosis has not been investigated in population-based longitudinal studies. A total of 250 healthy postmenopausal women who participated in a prospective cohort study were evaluated for IgG antibodies directed against C. pneumoniae and H. p ylori, osteoprotegerin (OPG), the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL), CrossLaps, and osteocalcin. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at the femoral neck and lumbar spine at baseline and at follow-up 5.8 years later. There were no significant differences in age-adjusted bone turnover markers, OPG, RANKL, the RANKL/OPG ratio, and BMD between the C. p neumoniae and H. p ylori IgG seropositive and seronegative subjects (P > 0.05). Neither C. p neumoniae nor H. p ylori IgG seropositivity was associated with age-and body mass index-adjusted BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine or bone loss at the 5.8-year follow-up. In logistic regression analysis, neither C. p neumoniae nor H. p ylori IgG seropositivities predicted incident lumbar or spine osteoporosis 5.8 years later. In conclusion, neither C. p neumoniae nor H. p ylori IgG seropositivity was associated with bone turnover markers, the RANKL/OPG ratio, BMD, or bone loss in postmenopausal women. In addition, chronic infection with C. p neumoniae or H. p ylori did not predict incident osteoporosis among this group of women.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The main objective of the Bushehr Elderly Health Programme, in its first phase, is to investigate the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and their association with major adverse cardiovascular events. PARTICIPANTS: Between March 2013 and October 2014, a total of 3000 men and women aged ≥ 60 years, residing in Bushehr, Iran, participated in this prospective cohort study (participation rate=90.2%). FINDINGS TO DATE: Baseline data on risk factors, including demographic and socioeconomic status, smoking and medical history, were collected through a modified WHO MONICA questionnaire. Vital signs and anthropometric measures, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, weight, height, and waist and hip circumference, were also measured. 12-lead electrocardiography and echocardiography were conducted on all participants, and total of 10 cc venous blood was taken, and sera was separated and stored at -80 °C for possible future use. Preliminary data analyses showed a noticeably higher prevalence of risk factors among older women compared to that in men. FUTURE PLANS: Risk factor assessments will be repeated every 5 years, and the participants will be followed during the study to measure the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events. Moreover, the second phase, which includes investigation of bone health and cognition in the elderly, was started in September 2015. Data are available at the Persian Gulf Biomedical Research Institute, Bushehr University of Medical Sciences, Bushehr, Iran, for any collaboration.

ABSTRACT

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most important parasitic disease in Iran. CL is distributed among more than half of 31 provinces of Iran. Studies on epidemiological aspects of the disease and Leishmania species identification among infected humans are necessary for providing a comprehensive prevention and control program thus; this descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on all CL suspected patients who referred to Health Centers of Bushehr province from 2009 to 2012. Physical examinations were carried out in suspected individuals and CL cases were confirmed by microscopical examinations. Prepared slides from suspicious cases of CL were fixed with absolute methanol and stained by Giemsa 10 %. All the Giemsa-stained slides examined under a light microscope with high magnification (1,000×) and classified them based on grading of Leishmania parasites. DNA from each slide was extracted, separately. The ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 was amplified with specific primers and PCR products were digested by restrict enzymes (HaeIII), run them in 3 % gel agarose for electrophoresis and visualized on a UV transilluminator after staining with ethidium bromide. SPSS version 21 was used for data analyses. A total of 726 suspected CL cases were referred to Health Centers of Bushehr province from 2009 to 2012 and samples were only prepared from 188 of the patients whereas 43 (5.9 %) of them were microscopy positive. The most frequent of CL was observed in November (14 %) and December (12 %). The most distribution of CL lesions were observed on hands (32 %), feet (26 %), and face (21 %), respectively. The highest frequency of CL was observed in 1-9 years old (30 %). Altogether, 50 % of the patients showed one skin lesion and 2-10 skin lesions were occurred in the remained CL patients. Totally, 27 out of 43 (63 %) of the Giemsa stained slides were positive by PCR-RFLP assay because all the PCR-RFLP negative slides were prepared 3-4 years ago and kept without cover slip, and also observed scarce amastigotes during microscopy observations. Leishmania species were identified in 21 desirable slides which 14 of them were L. major and 7 of the remained isolates were identified L. tropica using PCR-RFLP.

ABSTRACT

Serum adiponectin levels have been suggested to be predictors of type 2 diabetes mellitus in diverse populations. However, the relationship between circulating adiponectin levels and the risk of development of type 2 diabetes in postmenopausal women has not been investigated.A total of 382 healthy postmenopausal women who participated in a prospective cohort study were followed for 5.8 years. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was defined according to the criteria set out by the American Diabetes Association. Adiponectin, osteoprotegerin (OPG), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured using ELISA.Of 195 women who did not have diabetes at baseline and who were reexamined in the second phase of the study for diabetic status, 35 subjects (17.9%) developed type 2 diabetes mellitus during the 5.8 years follow-up period. The women with type 2 diabetes had lower adiponectin levels than the healthy postmenopausal women. Multiple regression analysis showed that, after adjustments were made for age, cardiovascular risk factors, OPG, and hs-CRP levels, higher baseline adiponectin levels were associated with a lower relative risk (RR) of having type 2 (RR = 0.07, confidence interval [CI]: 0.01-0.66, P = 0.021).Higher baseline adiponectin levels functioned as a predictor of a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus among postmenopausal women during a 5.8 years follow-up study. Therefore, it is suggested that elevated adiponectin levels may offer protection against the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus after the menopause.

ABSTRACT

A novel organic-inorganic hybrid material, namely L-prol-N-pMCM-41, was synthesized via two steps by covalently anchoring N-functionalized proline derivative (L-prol-N-pTMS) into the pore channels of MCM-41 silica. The prepared material was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The immobilized catalyst demonstrated moderate to high catalytic activity and excellent regioselectivity for the ring opening of styrene oxide with aniline derivatives under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The catalyst could be rapidly separated from the reaction mixture and reused up to five runs with good conversion and high regioselectivity.

ABSTRACT

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most important health problem in the city of Bushehr, southwestern Iran. The objective of the study was to determine some ecological aspects of sand flies in the city during 2010-2011. Sand flies were collected monthly from outdoors and indoors by sticky traps at four selected districts of the city. They were also dissected and examined by nested-PCR for identification of the parasite during August-September of 2011. A total of 1234 adult sand flies were collected and 6 species including 3 of Genus Phlebotomus and 3 of Genus Sergentomyia were identified. Four species including P. papatasi (3.98%), P. sergenti (1.14%), S. tiberiadis (87.18%), and S. baghdadis (7.7%) were found indoors. Six species including P. papatasi (3.47%), P. sergenti (3.17%), P. alexandri (0.1%), S. tiberiadis (77.74%), S. baghdadis (15.41%), and one female of S. clydei (0.11%) were collected from outdoors. Sand flies started to appear from March and disappear at the end of January. There was only one peak in the density curve in July. The study revealed that S. tiberiadis and S. baghdadis could enter indoors which 89 and 81.8% of them were found blood-fed, respectively. Moreover, P. papatasi, S. tiberiadis, and S. baghdadis were active indoors and outdoors in most months of the year. Nested-PCR of P. papatasi females was positive against kinetoplast DNA of L. major and L. turanica and also mixed natural infections were found by L. gerbilli and L. turanica. Moreover, mixed infections by L. major and L. turanica were observed in this species. Sergentomyia clydei and S. tiberiadis were found to be negative to any DNA of Leishmania species. Phlebotomus sergenti females were found infected with DNA of L. turanica and this is the first report of natural infection and detection of the parasite from this sand fly species in worldwide.
