ABSTRACT

To evaluate lenticular biomechanical and geometric parameters in Chinese adults with myopia and identify relevant factors using Brillouin microscopy (BM) and Pentacam. The biomechanical and geometric properties of the ocular lenses of Chinese adults with myopia were quantified using BM. Anterior segment images were acquired using a Pentacam. Correlated factors including age, sex, spherical equivalent (SE), intraocular pressure (IOP), axial length (AL), white-to-white ratio (WTW), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior chamber angle (ACA) were analyzed. We studied 65 eyes from 65 participants (mean age, 25.23 ± 6.12 years). Width of Top Plateau (WTP), Width of Bottom Plateau (WBP), Slope of Anterior Cortex (SAC), Slope of Posterior Cortex (SPC), and Height of Plateau (Height) metrics obtained using BM showed mean values of 2.597 ± 0.393 mm, 4.310 ± 0.535 mm, 1.344 ± 0.549 GPa/mm, -1.343 ± 0.480 GPa/mm, and 3.373 ± 0.048 GPa, respectively. No significant correlation was found between these parameters and sex, SE, IOP, CCT, ACA, or Height. Interestingly, WBP (r = 0.467, P < 0.001), SAC (r = 0.412, P = 0.001), and SPC (r = -0.280, P = 0.024) were significantly associated with age, and an age-related increase of WBP (slope of 35.36 ± 10.08 µm per year) was identified. Both ACD and ACV showed significant correlations with SAC (r = 0.329 and 0.380, P = 0.008 and 0.002, respectively), but not with SPC. BM provided a novel perspective on lenticular biomechanical and geometric properties in Chinese adults with myopia, which correlated with age, AL, WTW, ACD, and ACV.

ABSTRACT

Diagnosis and stratification of prostate cancer (PCa) patients using the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is challenging. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), as a new star of liquid biopsy, has attracted interest to complement inaccurate PSA screening and invasiveness of tissue biopsy. In this study, a panel of potential small EV (sEV) protein biomarkers is identified from PCa cell lines using label-free LC-MS/MS proteomics. These biomarkers underwent further validation with plasma and urine samples from different PCa stages through parallel reaction monitoring-based targeted proteomics, western blotting, and ELISA. Additionally, a tissue microarray containing cancerous and noncancerous tissues is screened to provide additional evidence of selected sEV proteins associated with cancer origin. Results indicate that sEV protein LAMB1 is highly expressed in human plasma of metastatic PCa patients compared with localised PCa patients and control subjects, while sEV protein Histone H4 is highly expressed in human urine of high-risk PCa patients compared to low-risk PCa patients and control subjects. These two sEV proteins demonstrate higher specificity and sensitivity than the PSA test and show promise for metastatic PCa diagnosis, progression monitoring, and risk stratification.

ABSTRACT

Background: Over the past few decades, the incidence of dengue fever has considerably increased. Effective vector control strategies and specific protection using dengue vaccine are thought to be the key elements to combat dengue. The dengue incidence among the Singapore youths (15-24 years) was second only to that of adults (25-44 years). This study evaluated the knowledge and attitude of Singapore youths on dengue and its preventive measures. Methods: A cross-sectional study using online-based questionnaire survey was conducted among Singapore youths from September to November 2022. Data were analyzed for descriptive statistics whereas Chi-squared test, linear regression analysis and Pearson correlation were used to determine the association between demographic factors and youth's attitude on dengue prevention using Rstudio. Results: A total of 624 respondents completed the survey out of 1822 surveys distributed nation-wide, with a response rate of 34.2% (mean age 17.4 years ± 1.84; 59.3% female; 89.9% Chinese). The mean dengue knowledge scores of participants were 14.1 ±2.8. Univariate analysis showed that teenagers (15-19 years) had significantly higher knowledge score than the young adults (20-24 years) (ß=0.82,95%CI = 0.13-1.51, p = 0.021). Majority of them were aware of the Mozzie Wipeout campaign (90.2%) followed by the release of Wolbachia mosquitos (69.1%). Two-thirds of the youths who were aware of Wolbachia and Gravitrap considered that it was effective in reducing dengue infection rates. Participants suggested information about the current dengue infection rate (71.9%) as the most effective of the five proposed strategies to improve uptake of dengue preventive measures. In comparison to young adults, teenagers were more likely to uptake dengue preventive measures if widespread mosquito control practices were implemented (69.1% vs. 42.3%). Conclusion: The overall knowledge of the youths on dengue and its prevention was satisfactory. Future health promotion campaigns targeting the youths should focus on transforming the knowledge into practice.

ABSTRACT

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery has increasingly been adopted for myopia correction in recent decades. This study, employing in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), aimed to assess the impact of corneal incision during ICL surgery on the corneal sub-basal nerve plexus (SNP) and adjacent immune dendritiform cells (DCs). In this longitudinal study, eyes from 53 patients undergoing ICL surgery were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively over a twelve-month period. Quantification of seven SNP parameters was performed using ACCMetrics V.2 software. Ultimately, the final analysis was restricted to one eye from each of the 37 patients who completed a minimum of three months' postoperative follow-up. Preoperative investigations revealed a positive correlation of DC density with patient age and a negative association with corneal nerve fiber density (CNFD). Additionally, both DCs and CNFD were positively linked to spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and inversely related to axial length (AL). Intriguingly, preoperative DC density demonstrated an indirect relationship with both baseline and postoperative CNFD changes. Post-surgery, an initial surge in DC density was observed, which normalized subsequently. Meanwhile, parameters like CNFD, corneal nerve fiber length (CNFL), and corneal nerve fractal dimension (CNFrD) initially showed a decline following surgery. However, at one-year follow-up, CNFL and CNFrD displayed significant recovery, while CNFD did not return to its baseline level. This study thus delineates the regeneration pattern of SNP and alterations in DC density post-ICL surgery, highlighting that CNFD in the central cornea does not completely revert to preoperative levels within a year. Given these findings, practitioners are advised to exercise caution in older patients, those with high myopia, or elevated preoperative DCs who may undergo delayed SNP regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Natural compounds like pterostilbene (PTE) have gained recognition for their various biological activities and potential health benefits. However, challenges related to bioavailability and limited clinical efficacy have prompted efforts to strengthen their therapeutic potential. To meet these challenges, we herein rationally designed and successfully synthesized a pharmaceutical phosphoramidite that allows for the programmable incorporation of PTE into oligonucleotides. The resultant aptamer-PTE conjugate can selectively bind to cancer cells, leading to a specific internalization and drug release. Moreover, compared with free PTE, the conjugate exhibits superior cytotoxicity in cancer cells. Specifically, in a zebrafish xenograft model, the nanomedicine effectively inhibits tumor growth and neovascularization, highlighting its potential for targeted antitumor therapy. This approach presents a promising avenue for harnessing the therapeutic potential of natural compounds via a nanomedicine solution.

ABSTRACT

Whey protein isolates (WPI) are known to have mineral-binding capacity to promote iron absorption. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of iron ratio on the conformational structure of iron-bound whey protein isolate (WPI-Fe) and its thermodynamic stability. It was shown that the iron to protein ratio affects both the iron binding capacity of WPI and the iron valence state on the surface of WPI-Fe complexes. As the iron content increases, aggregation between protein molecules occurs. In addition, WPI-Fe nanoparticles have thermodynamic stability and Fe2+ has a high affinity with WPI for spontaneous exothermic reactions. This study demonstrates that WPI-Fe complexes can be used to efficiently deliver high-quality iron source (Fe2+) for future iron supplements.

ABSTRACT

Treponema pallidum is the causative factor of syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) characterized by perivascular infiltration of inflammatory cells, vascular leakage, swelling and proliferation of endothelial cells (ECs). The endothelium lining blood and lymphatic vessels is a key barrier separating body fluids from host tissues and is a major target of T. pallidum. In this review, we focus on how T. pallidum establish intimate interactions with ECs, triggering endothelial dysfunction such as endothelial inflammation, abnormal repairment and damage of ECs. In addition, we summarize that migration and invasion of T. pallidum across vascular ECs may occur through two pathways. These two mechanisms of transendothelial migration are paracellular and cholesterol-dependent, respectively. Herein, clarifying the relationship between T. pallidum and endothelial dysfunction is of great significance to provide novel strategies for diagnosis and prevention of syphilis, and has a great potential prospect of clinical application.

ABSTRACT

The determination of the time of an injury has been a major problem in forensic science due to the lack of objective, reliable and portable methods. In this study, a subcutaneous hemorrhage model in rats was established over six days, and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics was used to determine the time since injury. Initial principal component analysis (PCA) showed variance among hematoma sites. Subsequently, spectral data were acquired to establish a dependable partial least square (PLS) regression model with predictive abilities. The root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values produced by a genetic algorithm (GA) were 0.64 d (R2 = 0.88) and 0.57 d (R2 = 0.90), respectively. Few variables were involved in the model, and significantly better results were obtained in comparison to the conventional full-spectrum PLS model. In combination with the results of variable importance in projection (VIP) scores, all components, including proteins, nucleic acids and phospholipids, provided inferences regarding the samples at different time points; additionally, amide I and II bands represented the secondary structure of proteins and provided the largest contribution. Based on our preliminary study, the combination of swift and nondamaging ATR-FTIR spectroscopy with chemometrics could prove to be an advantageous approach for gauging the age of an injury in the forensic field.

ABSTRACT

LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 (NCM-811) exhibits the highest capacity in commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), and the high Ni content (80 %) provides the only route for high energy density. However, the cationic structure instability arisen from the increase of Ni content (>80 %) limits the further increase of the capacity, and inevitable O2 release related to anionic structure instability hinders the utilization of anion redox activity. Here, by comparing various combinations of high-entropy dopants substituted Co element, we propose a low-electronegativity cationic high-entropy doping strategy to fabricate the high-Ni Co-free layered cathode (LiNi0.8 Mn0.12 Al0.02 Ti0.02 Cr0.02 Fe0.02 O2 ) that exhibits much higher capacity and cycling stability. Configurational disorder originated from cationic high-entropy doping in transition metal (TM) layer, anchors the oxidized lattice oxygen ((O2 )n- ) to preserve high (O2 )n- content, triggering the anion redox activity. Electron transfer induced by applying TM dopants with lower electronegativity than that of Co element, increases the electron density of O in TM-O octahedron (TM-O6 ) configuration to reach higher (O2 )n- content, resulting in the higher anion redox activity. With exploring the stabilization effect on both cations and anions of high-entropy doping and low-electronegativity cationic modified anion redox activity, we propose an innovative and variable pathway for rationally tuning the properties of commercial cathodes.

ABSTRACT

Gleason grading is an important prognostic indicator for prostate adenocarcinoma and is crucial for patient treatment decisions. However, intermediate-risk patients diagnosed in the Gleason grade group (GG) 2 and GG3 can harbour either aggressive or non-aggressive disease, resulting in under- or overtreatment of a significant number of patients. Here, we performed proteomic, differential expression, machine learning, and survival analyses for 1,348 matched tumour and benign sample runs from 278 patients. Three proteins (F5, TMEM126B, and EARS2) were identified as candidate biomarkers in patients with biochemical recurrence. Multivariate Cox regression yielded 18 proteins, from which a risk score was constructed to dichotomize prostate cancer patients into low- and high-risk groups. This 18-protein signature is prognostic for the risk of biochemical recurrence and completely independent of the intermediate GG. Our results suggest that markers generated by computational proteomic profiling have the potential for clinical applications including integration into prostate cancer management.

ABSTRACT

Syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum), has had a worldwide resurgence in recent years and remains a public health threat. As such, there has been a great deal of research into clinical strategies for the disease, including diagnostic biomarkers and possible strategies for treatment and prevention. Although serological testing remains the predominant laboratory diagnostic method for syphilis, it is worth noting that investigations pertaining to the DNA of T. pallidum, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), chemokines, and metabolites in peripheral blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and other bodily fluids have the potential to offer novel perspectives on the diagnosis of syphilis. In addition, the global spread of antibiotic resistance, such as macrolides and tetracyclines, has posed significant challenges for the treatment of syphilis. Fortunately, there is still no evidence of penicillin resistance. Hence, penicillin is the recommended course of treatment for syphilis, whereas doxycycline, tetracycline, ceftriaxone, and amoxicillin are viable alternative options. In recent years, efforts to discover a vaccine for syphilis have been reignited with better knowledge of the repertoire of T. pallidum outer membrane proteins (OMPs), which are the most probable syphilis vaccine candidates. However, research on therapeutic interventions and vaccine development for human subjects is limited due to practical and ethical considerations. Thus, the preclinical model is ideal for conducting research, and it plays an important role in clinical transformation. Different preclinical models have recently emerged, such as in vitro culture and mouse models, which will lay a solid foundation for clinical treatment and prevention of syphilis. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the most recent syphilis tactics, including detection, drug resistance treatments, vaccine development, and preclinical models in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

Background: Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) or hyperbilirubinemia is a ubiquitous condition in newborn infants. Currently, the transcutaneous bilirubinometer is used to screen for NNJ in health care facilities, where neonates need to be physically present (ie, a centralized model of care for NNJ screening). Mobile health (mHealth) apps present a low-cost, home-based, and noninvasive system that could facilitate self-monitoring of NNJ and could allow mothers the convenience of screening for NNJ remotely. However, end users' acceptability of such mHealth apps is of fundamental importance before the incorporation of such apps into clinical practice. Objective: The study aimed to explore the perception of postpartum mothers toward self-monitoring of NNJ using a novel mHealth app. Methods: Mothers attending video consultations for early postpartum care at 2 Singapore primary care clinics watched an instructional video for a hyperbilirubinemia-screening mHealth app (HSMA). An independent researcher used a semistructured topic guide to conduct in-depth interviews with 25 mothers, assessing their views on HSMAs. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim, and checked for accuracy before data analysis. Two researchers independently analyzed the transcripts via thematic analysis. Data were managed using NVivo qualitative data management software. Results: The identified themes were grouped under perceived usability and utility. Mothers valued the convenience and utility of HSMAs for remote monitoring of NNJ. They appreciated the objectivity the app readings provided compared to visual inspection. However, they perceived that the app's applicability would be restricted to severe jaundice, were concerned about its accuracy and restriction to the English language, and lacked confidence in using it. Nevertheless, they were willing to use it once its accuracy was proven and when they received adequate guidance from health care professionals. They also suggested including an action plan for the measured readings and clinical signs within the app. Mothers proposed pairing teleconsultations with HSMAs to boost their confidence and enhance adoption. Conclusions: Mothers were receptive to using HSMAs but had concerns. Multiple languages, proof of accuracy, and resources to guide users should be incorporated into the app in the next phase to increase its successful adoption. Complementing such apps with a teleconsultation service presents a plausible and pragmatic NNJ care delivery model in general practice.

ABSTRACT

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater with complex matrix remains a challenging task. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with predesigned functional building blocks provide a favorable platform for the selective separation of Pb(II). Herein, the bifunctional SPAFs with the introduction of -OH and -SO3H were synthesized through rationally optimizing their steric hindrance. As a result, the SPAF-0.75 exhibits favorable adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (212.34 mg g-1), which is 22 times larger than pristine framework. Competition experiment indicates that SPAF-0.75 possess the selective removal of Pb(II) without interfering from co-existing metal ions. The removal rate of SPAF-0.75 still retain at 100% after six successive cycles. The DFT calculation illustrates that -OH and -SO3H are co-participate in the process of capturing Pb(II), revealing SPAF-0.75 preferred removal of Pb(II) owing to the lowest adsorption energy (ΔEab = -3.99 eV). This study extend the understanding of the structure-property relationship and facilitate new possibilities for PAFs.

ABSTRACT

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer in males worldwide. The risk stratification of PCa is mainly based on morphological examination. Here we analyzed the proteome of 667 tumor samples from 487 Chinese PCa patients and characterized 9576 protein groups by PulseDIA mass spectrometry. Then we developed a pathway activity-based classifier concerning 13 proteins from seven pathways, and dichotomized the PCa patients into two subtypes, namely PPS1 and PPS2. PPS1 is featured with enhanced innate immunity, while PPS2 with suppressed innate immunity. This classifier exhibited a correlation with PCa progression in our cohort and was further validated by two published transcriptome datasets. Notably, PPS2 was significantly correlated with poor biochemical recurrence (BCR)/metastasis-free survival (log-rank P-value < 0.05). The PPS2 was also featured with cell proliferation activation. Together, our study presents a novel pathway activity-based stratification scheme for PCa.

ABSTRACT

Herpes zoster (HZ) causes significant morbidity, particularly in older adults. With the advent of a recombinant zoster vaccine, HZ is potentially preventable. However, data on HZ burden and healthcare utilization in primary care populations remains scarce. This study described the prevalence and healthcare utilization in managing HZ in a developed community. A retrospective database review was conducted across a cluster of 8 public primary care clinics in urban Singapore. Data of multi-ethnic Asian patients with a diagnosis code of "herpes zoster" from 2018 to 2020 was extracted from their electronic medical records. Socio-demographic, clinical, visitation, medical leave, prescription, and referral data were analyzed. A total of 2,987 out of 737,868 individuals were diagnosed with HZ over 3 years. The mean age was 59.9 (SD + 15.5) years; 49.2% were male; 78.5% Chinese, 12.2% Malay, and 4.1% Indian. The prevalence was 221, 224, 203 per 100,000 persons in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. The 70 to 79-year age group had the highest prevalence (829/100,000) across 3 years. Oral acyclovir (median daily dose 4,000 mg; median duration 7 days) and topical acyclovir were prescribed in 71.6 and 47.6%, respectively. Analgesia prescribed were gabapentin (41.0%), paracetamol combinations (30.1%), oral NSAIDs (23.7%), opioids (6.0%), and tricyclic antidepressants (1.9%). Most individuals consulted only once (84.3%); 32.7% of them required medical leave and 5.6% had more than 7 days of absenteeism. HZ-related referrals to the hospital were required in 8.9% (4.9% emergency, 2.8% ophthalmology). The findings of this study suggest a need for HZ vaccination among older age groups. Visitation and referral rates were low. The use of topical acyclovir was uncovered, and further research should evaluate the underlying reasons, benefits, and harms of such practice. The use of analgesia combinations may be explored further.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has further raised concerns about viral transmission. A fundamental understanding of the intermolecular interactions between the coronavirus and different surfaces is needed to address the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through respiratory droplet-contaminated surfaces or fomites. The receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein is a key target for the adhesion of SARS-CoV-2 on the surface. To understand the effect of mutations on adhesion, atomic force microscopy-based single-molecule force spectroscopy (AFM-SMFS) was used to quantify the interactions between wild-type, Omicron, and XBB with several surfaces. The measurement revealed that RBD exhibits relatively higher forces on paper and gold surfaces, with the average force being 1.5 times greater compared to that on plastic surface. In addition, the force elevation on paper and gold surfaces for the variants can reach ∼28% relative to the wild type. These findings enhance our understanding of the nanomechanical interactions of the virus on common surfaces.

Background: Gout is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, yet suboptimal gout control remains a problem globally. Identifying the risk factors associated with poor gout control among patients in primary care allows targeted interventions to improve their clinical management. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of poor gout control and its associated demographic and clinical factors among urbanized community-dwelling Asian patients. Methods: This retrospective study was based on data extracted from the electronic medical records of 8 public primary care clinics in Singapore. Patients with a diagnostic code of gout who had 2 or more visits between 1st January 2018 and 31st December 2019 were included in the analysis. Data extracted included: demographics, anthropological measurements, comorbidities, serum uric acid levels and medication prescription. A patient is defined to have poor gout control if they suffer two or more acute gout attacks within a year. Chi-Squared test was used for categorical parameters. For continuous variables, univariate logistic regression analysis was first performed. Significant factors (p ≤ 0.1) were then included in the logistics regression model to account for confounders. Results: A total of 7,970 patients and 24,624 visits were included in the analysis. The prevalence of poorly controlled gout was 28.2% (n = 2,244/7,970); only 46.3% of them (n = 1,039/2,244) were prescribed allopurinol and 13.4% (n = 301/2,244) were taking doses ≥300 mg. Using logistic regression, factors associated with poor gout control were: male gender [adjusted OR (AOR) =1.66, p < 0.001], Malay ethnicity (AOR = 1.27, p = 0.007), congestive heart failure (AOR = 1.64, p = 0.037). Patients prescribed allopurinol (AOR = 1.52, p < 0.001), NSAIDs (AOR = 2.76, p < 0.001) and corticosteroids (AOR = 2.83, p < 0.001) were more likely to have poorly-controlled gout. Conclusion: Nearly 30% of patients had poor gout. Interventions should focus on male and Malay patients and those with congestive cardiac failure.

ABSTRACT

Composite materials that combine magnetic and dielectric losses offer a potential solution to enhance impedance match and significantly improve microwave absorption. In this study, Co3O4/ZnCo2O4 and ZnCo2O4/ZnO with varying metal oxide compositions are successfully synthesized, which are achieved by modifying the ratios of Co2+ and Zn2+ ions in the CoZn bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor, followed by a high-temperature oxidative calcination process. Subsequently, a layer of polypyrrole (PPy) is coated onto the composite surfaces, resulting in the formation of core-shell structures known as Co3O4/ZnCo2O4@PPy (CZCP) and ZnCo2O4/ZnO@PPy (ZCZP) composites. The proposed method allows for rapid adjustments to the metal oxide composition within the inner shell, enabling the creation of composites with varying degrees of magnetic losses. The inclusion of PPy in the outer shell serves to enhance the bonding strength of the entire composite structure while contributing to conductive and dielectric losses. In specific experimental conditions, when the loading is set at 50 wt%, the CZCP composite exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.58 GHz (12.42 GHz-18 GHz) at a thickness of 1.53 mm. Meanwhile, the ZCZP composite demonstrates an impressive minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of -71.2 dB at 13.04 GHz, with a thickness of 1.84 mm. This study offers a synthesis strategy for designing absorbent composites that possess light weight and excellent absorptive properties, thereby contributing to the advancement of electromagnetic wave absorbing materials.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, deep neural networks have been employed to approximate nonlinear continuous functionals F defined on Lp([-1,1]s) for 1≤p≤∞. However, the existing theoretical analysis in the literature either is unsatisfactory due to the poor approximation results, or does not apply to the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function. This paper aims to investigate the approximation power of functional deep ReLU networks in two settings: F is continuous with restrictions on the modulus of continuity, and F has higher order Fréchet derivatives. A novel functional network structure is proposed to extract features of higher order smoothness harbored by the target functional F. Quantitative rates of approximation in terms of the depth, width and total number of weights of neural networks are derived for both settings. We give logarithmic rates when measuring the approximation error on the unit ball of a Hölder space. ABSTRACT

Background: Social interaction is a fundamental human need. Social isolation (SI) can have negative effects on both emotional and cognitive function. However, it is currently unclear how age and the duration of SI affect emotion and recognition function. In addition, there is no specific treatment for the effects of SI. Methods: The adolescence or adult mice were individually housed in cages for 1, 6 or 12 months and for 2 months to estabolish SI mouse model. We investigated the effects of SI on behavior in mice at different ages and under distinct durations of SI, and we explored the possible underlying mechanisms. Then we performed deep brain stimulation (DBS) to evaluate its influences on SI induced behavioral abnormalities. Results: We found that social recognition was affected in the short term, while social preference was damaged by extremely long periods of SI. In addition to affecting social memory, SI also affects emotion, short-term spatial ability and learning willingness in mice. Myelin was decreased significantly in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and dorsal hippocampus of socially isolated mice. Cellular activity in response to social stimulation in both areas was impaired by social isolation. By stimulating the mPFC using DBS, we found that DBS alleviated cellular activation disorders in the mPFC after long-term SI and improved social preference in mice. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the therapeutic potential of stimulating the mPFC with DBS in individuals with social preference deficits caused by long-term social isolation, as well as the effects of DBS on the cellular activity and density of OPCs.
