ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In ice hockey, the major physical workload comes from acceleration in all planes of motion and transitions between skating trajectories. Hockey players' anthropometric characteristics correlate with performance. In team sports, the use of ergogenic drugs for recovery is relevant to avoid athletes' overtraining. It is very important to protect athletes' health and allow them to maintain high-performance levels. Cytoflavin is an ergogenic drug whose action is based on the combined effects of its active ingredients (succinic acid, inosine, nicotinamide and riboflavin), which are naturally occurring metabolites that stimulate tissue respiration. The study aimed to assess the 6-week Cytoflavin consumption effects on body composition (body weight, body mass index, body fat percentage and bioimpedance phase angle) and aerobic performance. METHODS: This study included 60 male professional hockey players (aged 19 to 36 years) divided into two groups of 30 subjects: group I (body weight 87.90 ± 7.44 kg, BMI 25.86 ± 2.04 kg/m2) and group II (body weight 87.04 ± 6.22 kg, BMI 25.52 ± 2.38 kg/m2). Athletes in group I received Cytoflavin, whereas athletes in group II did not. RESULTS: In group I, statistically significant reductions in body weight and body mass index were not observed until 14 and 35 days, respectively. In contrast, in group II, both body weight and BMI significantly decreased both times. Aerobic performance significantly increased in both groups, with significantly greater increases in group I. CONCLUSIONS: Cytoflavin can be considered an ergogenic drug that improves body composition parameters, especially in the control of weight reduction and improvement in aerobic performance.

ABSTRACT

Family members often serve as primary caregivers to their parents and relatives. Information and communication technology (ICT) plays an important role in facilitating this caregiving role through using Internet of Things (IoTs) caregiving services. However, there is limited evidence regarding factors influencing caregivers' acceptance of new technologies. The current study investigated factors affecting caregivers' intentions to use ICT-based IoTs. Chi-square test was used to contrast differences in distributions between categorical variables. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with increased intention to use ICT-based IoTs. Male caregivers showed increased intentions of using these products and considered the psychological burden as well as the diverse factors associated with adopting IoTs. On the other hand, female caregivers considered relieving their care burdens and social influences. As such, findings indicated that female caregivers demonstrated increased intention, which is associated with their care burdens, and relieving a similar experience would be a significant motivation. Further studies are needed not only for specific measures to reduce psychological burden but also for physical burden. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Influenza is one of the most common infectious diseases, which affects the lower respiratory tract, and can lead to serious complications, including death. It is known that currently available therapeutic agents and vaccines do not provide 100% protection against influenza viruses. The development of drugs based on the RNA interference mechanism in the context of this problem is a promising area. This paper aims to assess the effect of FLT4, Nup98, and Nup205 cellular gene knockdown on the reproduction of the influenza A virus in human lung cell culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Influenza virus strain A/WSN/1933 (St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, USA) was used in this work as well as A549 cell culture (human lung adenocarcinoma, ATCC® CCL- 185, USA) and MDCK cell culture (dog kidney cells, Institut Pasteur, France). Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) (Syntol, Russia) were synthesized for targeting the FLT4, Nup98, and Nup205 genes. Lipofectamin 2000 (Invitrogen, USA) was used for transfection. After 4 hours, the transfected cells were infected with the influenza virus at MOI = 0.1. Virus-containing fluid was collected within three days from the moment of transfection, and the intensity of viral reproduction was assessed by CPE titration and hemagglutination reactions. Viral RNA concentration was determined by RT-PCR. Mann- Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In cells treated with siRNA for FLT4, Nup98, and Nup205 genes, there was a significant decrease in the expression of target genes and indicators of viral reproduction (virus titer, hemagglutinating activity, viral RNA concentration) at MOI = 0.1, although the cell survival rate did not decrease significantly. On the first day, the viral titer in cells treated with declared siRNA was lower, on average, by 1 Lg, and on the second and third days, by 2.2-2.3 Lg, compared to cells treated with nonspecific siRNA. During RT-PCR, a significant decrease in the concentration of viral RNA with Nup98.1 and Nup205 siRNA was detected: up to 190 times and 30 times on the first day, 26 and 29 times on the second day, and 6 and 30 times on the third day, respectively. For FLT4.2 siRNA, the number of viral RNA copies has been decreased by 23, 18, and 16 times on the first, second, and third days. Similar results were obtained while determining the hemagglutinating activity of the virus. The hemagglutinating activity decreased mostly (by 16 times) in cells treated with Nup205 and FLT4.2 siRNAs on the third day. In cells treated with FLT4.1, Nup98.1, and Nup98.2 siRNAs, the hemagglutinating activity decreased by 8 times. CONCLUSION: We identified a number of genes, such as FLT4, Nup98, and Nup205, whose expression can efficiently suppress viral reproduction when their expression is decreased. The original siRNA sequences were also obtained. These results are important for the creation of therapeutic and prophylactic agents, whose action is based on the RNA interference mechanism.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study explored the direct and indirect effects of knowledge of new technology (e.g., artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution), attitudes towards technology use, and smartphone utilization skills on older adults' willingness to use home-based information and communication technology (ICT) for self-health management. METHODS: A phone survey was conducted among 300 older adults aged 65 or older in Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea. A path analysis was performed to identify the direct and indirect effects of knowledge of new technology, attitudes towards technology use, and smartphone utilization skills on willingness to use home-based healthcare ICT. Socioeconomic variables were used as control variables. RESULTS: Knowledge of new technology, but not attitudes towards technology use, had a direct impact on smartphone utilization skills. Attitude towards technology use and smartphone utilization skills showed significant effects on willingness to use home-based healthcare ICT. One standard unit change in attitudes towards technology use contributed to a 0.172 unit change in willingness (p = 0.001), and one standard unit change in smartphone utilization skills changed willingness by 0.246 units (p < 0.001). In addition, older adults with a higher education level and economic status, and lower self-related health status, were more willing to use home-based healthcare ICT. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the necessity of enhancing the smartphone utilization skills of older adults and attitudes towards technology use. Providing more user-friendly services and increasing smartphone utilization skills among older adults would contribute to willingness to use home-based ICT for healthcare management.

BACKGROUND: The Japanese and Korean healthcare systems are very similar and thus, they have the same problems and weaknesses. This study discusses the problems and proposes complementary solutions based on the results of a comparative analysis of conditions in the healthcare systems of the two countries. METHODS: This article presents a comparative analysis of the healthcare status of the two countries based on certain health criteria used worldwide, a literature review, and data from the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank, and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). RESULTS: The scores of the healthcare systems were calculated for quantitative comparison. The performance of the Japanese health system was the best, followed by the Korean health system. Both countries observed an increased life expectancy and decreased infant and under-five mortality rates during the last 14 years. However, lower fertility rates were found, which could lead to a decreased working population and a subsequent increase in the economic burden of governments and households. A higher alcohol consumption rate was found in Korea, which was related to the establishment of interpersonal relationships. CONCLUSION: The reform of the healthcare systems in Korea and Japan led to an increased life expectancy; concurrently, reduced fertility rates led to an increasing aging population. As a result, increasing health costs require additional measures to improve health equity and strengthen health promotion.
