ABSTRACT

Coral propagation and out-planting based restoration approaches are increasingly being applied to assist natural recovery of coral reefs. However, many restoration methods rely on plastic zip-ties to secure coral material which is potentially problematic for the marine environment. Plastic-free biodegradable alternatives may however pose unique risks to coral-associated bacterial communities integral to coral health. Therefore, to identify whether biodegradable materials differentially impact coral-associated bacterial communities we examined Acropora millepora coral-associated bacterial communities during propagation in two experiments on the Great Barrier Reef. Coral fragments were secured to coral nurseries with conventional plastic, metal, or biodegradable (polyester and polycaprolactone) ties. Tie failure and coral-associated bacterial communities were then characterized over six months. Minimal coral mortality was observed (3.6%-8%) and all ties had low failure rates (0%-4.2%) except for biodegradable polyester ties (29.2% failure). No differences were observed between coral-associated bacterial communities of fragments secured with different ties, and no proliferation of putatively pathogenic bacteria was recorded. Overall, our findings suggest that reducing reliance on conventional plastic is feasible through transitions to biodegradable materials, without any notable impacts on coral-associated bacterial communities. However, we caution the need to examine more coral taxa of different morphologies and new plastic-free materials prior to application.

ABSTRACT

It has been proposed that an effective approach for predicting whether and how reef-forming corals persist under future climate change is to examine populations thriving in present day extreme environments, such as mangrove lagoons, where water temperatures can exceed those of reef environments by more than 3°C, pH levels are more acidic (pH < 7.9, often below 7.6) and O2 concentrations are regularly considered hypoxic (<2 mg/L). Defining the physiological features of these "extreme" corals, as well as their relationships with the, often symbiotic, organisms within their microbiome, could increase our understanding of how corals will persist into the future. To better understand coral-microbe relationships that potentially underpin coral persistence within extreme mangrove environments, we therefore conducted a 9-month reciprocal transplant experiment, whereby specimens of the coral Pocillopora acuta were transplanted between adjacent mangrove and reef sites on the northern Great Barrier Reef. Bacterial communities associated with P. acuta specimens native to the reef environment were dominated by Endozoicomonas, while Symbiodiniaceae communities were dominated by members of the Cladocopium genus. In contrast, P. acuta colonies native to the mangrove site exhibited highly diverse bacterial communities with no dominating members, and Symbiodiniaceae communities dominated by Durusdinium. All corals survived for 9 months after being transplanted from reef-to-mangrove, mangrove-to-reef environments (as well as control within environment transplants), and during this time there were significant changes in the bacterial communities, but not in the Symbiodiniaceae communities or their photo-physiological functioning. In reef-to-mangrove transplanted corals, there were varied, but sometimes rapid shifts in the associated bacterial communities, including a loss of "core" bacterial members after 9 months where coral bacterial communities began to resemble those of the native mangrove corals. Bacterial communities associated with mangrove-to-reef P. acuta colonies also changed from their original composition, but remained different to the native reef corals. Our data demonstrates that P. acuta associated bacterial communities are strongly influenced by changes in environmental conditions, whereas Symbiodiniaceae associated communities remain highly stable.

ABSTRACT

Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide prompting reef managers and stakeholders to increasingly explore new management tools. Following back-to-back bleaching in 2016/2017, multi-taxa coral nurseries were established in 2018 for the first time on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) to aid reef maintenance and restoration at a "high-value" location-Opal Reef-frequented by the tourism industry. Various coral species (n = 11) were propagated within shallow water (ca. 4-7m) platforms installed across two sites characterised by differing environmental exposure-one adjacent to a deep-water channel (Blue Lagoon) and one that was relatively sheltered (RayBan). Growth rates of coral fragments placed onto nurseries were highly variable across taxa but generally higher at Blue Lagoon (2.1-10.8 cm2 month-1 over 12 months) compared to RayBan (0.6-6.6 cm2 month-1 over 9 months). Growth at Blue Lagoon was largely independent of season, except for Acropora tenuis and Acropora hyacinthus, where growth rates were 15-20% higher for December 2018-July 2019 ("warm season") compared to August-December 2018 ("cool season"). Survivorship across all 2,536 nursery fragments was ca. 80-100%, with some species exhibiting higher survivorship at Blue Lagoon (Acropora loripes, Porites cylindrica) and others at RayBan (A. hyacinthus, Montipora hispida). Parallel measurements of growth and survivorship were used to determine relative return-on-effort (RRE) scores as an integrated metric of "success" accounting for life history trade-offs, complementing the mutually exclusive assessment of growth or survivorship. RRE scores within sites (across species) were largely driven by growth, whereas RRE scores between sites were largely driven by survivorship. The initial nursery phase of coral propagation therefore appears useful to supplement coral material naturally available for stewardship of frequently visited Great Barrier Reef tourism (high-value) sites, but further assessment is needed to evaluate how well the growth rates and survival for nursery grown corals translate once material is outplanted.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on Circumcision has called for the development of standards of trainee proficiency in regards to evaluation and technique for neonatal clamp circumcision (NCC). At the present time, there is no standardized or general consensus on patient selection for NCC. An improved method to evaluate newborns for NCC is an important first step in this process. Therefore, the authors collaborated to identify criteria useful in the evaluation of newborns for suitability for NCC, and for assessment of success after NCC and have named it "Checklist Assessment for Neonatal Clamp Circumcision Suitability." METHODS: A national multi-institutional collaboration was created to obtain consensus on objective criteria for use in determining patient suitability for NCC, and for assessing post-circumcision success outcomes. Criteria included elements from detailed medical history, bedside physical examination, and post-circumcision follow-up. Patients desiring NCC were enrolled consecutively and prospectively. The Checklist was followed to determine which newborns were suited to NCC, and NCC was done in those cases. The patients' caretakers were given post-circumcision care instructions and a follow-up appointment. Post circumcision, the Checklist was followed to determine if the procedure resulted in a successful circumcision or if there were complications. RESULTS: A total of 193 cases were enrolled prospectively and consecutively from January 2014 through October 2014. The mean age was 15 days (1-30 days). Of those 193 patients, 129 (67%) were deemed suitable for circumcision and underwent NCC. Post-circumcision assessment showed a 100% success rate with no complications. A total of 64 (23%) cases were deemed unsuitable for NCC because at least one checklist criterion was not satisfied, most commonly: penile torsion (n = 25), chordee (n = 19), and penoscrotal webbing (n = 19). DISCUSSION: Use of the Checklist in the present study has demonstrated a method of patient screening resulting in a 100% success rate with no complications. A high proportion of patients (33%) was identified as unsuited for NCC; however, the patient population consisted of newborn males referred to pediatric urology, and thus does not represent the general population, which is expected to have a lower proportion of unsuited patients. Regardless, the Checklist has the potential to enhance the decision-making process for both urologic and non-urologic care providers. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the "Checklist Assessment for Neonatal Clamp Circumcision Suitability" assessment tool improves identification of patients unsuited for NCC and thereby potentially decreases the likelihood of circumcision-related complications.

ABSTRACT

The Czech botanist Frantisek Nábelek (1884-1965) explored the Middle East in 1909-1910, visiting what are now Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Bahrain, Iran and Turkey. He described four new genera, 78 species, 69 varieties and 38 forms of vascular plants, most of these in his work Iter Turcico-Persicum (1923-1929). The main herbarium collection of Iter Turcico-Persicum comprises 4163 collection numbers (some with duplicates), altogether 6465 specimens. It is currently deposited in the herbarium SAV. In addition, some fragments and duplicates are found in B, E, W and WU. The whole collection at SAV was recently digitized and both images and metadata are available via web portal www.nabelek.sav.sk, and through JSTOR Global Plants and the Biological Collection Access Service. Most localities were georeferenced and the web portal provides a mapping facility. Annotation of specimens is available via the AnnoSys facility. For each specimen a CETAF stable identifier is provided enabling the correct reference to the image and metadata.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Lesions of the pediatric glans penis are an uncommon but important aspect of pediatric urological care. We reviewed the available literature on this topic and did not identify a comprehensive reference resource. We compiled our multi-institutional experience with such conditions to prepare a handy clinical reference source. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The diversity of pediatric glans penis lesions was documented by searching the English and nonEnglish literature as well as the archives at our institutions. Cases were included in the study if the patient(s) identified were younger than 18 years at initial presentation or documented to have first had a glans penis lesion when younger than 18 years. Hypospadiac-epispadiac anomalies of the glans were excluded. RESULTS: From our institutions we identified 6 new cases of various pediatric glans lesions. Altogether the literature describes 137 distinct nondiphallia glans lesions and more than 100 cases of diphallia, including glans duplication. The nondiphallia reports consist of a total of 61 cystic lesions (44%), 33 vascular malformations (24%), 20 dermatological lesions (15%), 20 infectious lesions (15%) and 3 neurogenic lesions (2%). We did not identify a compact resource to compare these anomalies. Visual comparison permits structuring a differential diagnosis and determining urological treatment, which is typically excisional biopsy, laser treatment, sclerotherapy or topical steroid administration. CONCLUSIONS: We present a visual reference of varied lesions of the pediatric glans penis, including 6 new cases, with urological significance. These lesions are always benign but they typically require surgical excision for a definitive pathological diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: It has been reported that all children with febrile urinary tract infections (FUTIs) and normal voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) findings show occult reflux (vesicoureteral reflux [VUR]) when examined by cystography performed with positioning of the instillation of contrast at the ureteral orifice (PIC cystography). In this study, we evaluated the reproducibility of this finding using a prospective multi-institutional collaborative examination to determine whether PIC-VUR is as common in such cases as previously shown. METHODS: From March 2002 to October 2003, four institutions performed PIC cystography consecutively and prospectively in pediatric cases of FUTI (greater than 101 degrees F) who had not shown VUR by conventional VCUG. We correlated the ureteral orifice (UO) configuration and position with the status of PIC-VUR. RESULTS: PIC cystography was performed in 39 children (31 girls and 8 boys; 75 FUTIs). We identified PIC-VUR in 32 (82%) of 39 children, involving 58 (74%) of 78 ureters. The likelihood of demonstrating PIC-VUR was increased 37-fold if the UO showed a patulous configuration and was increased 9-fold if the UO showed a lateral configuration. PIC-VUR was noted uniformly in UOs showing hydrodistension. CONCLUSIONS: This multi-institutional registry showed that the incidence of PIC-VUR (82%) in children with FUTI and normal standard VCUG findings is similar to that previously reported. We consider that PIC-VUR likely accounts for the FUTIs.
