ABSTRACT

Parents play a crucial role in adolescents' Internet use. Both general parenting (i.e., autonomy-supportive and controlling parenting) and Internet-specific parenting (i.e., restrictive mediation, active mediation, and parental encouragement) are related to adolescents' online behaviors. However, existing studies have focused either on an Internet-specific parenting or general parenting strategy and have neglected their interaction, failing to capture the intricate nature of the parenting context of youth's online behaviors. Few studies have examined parental encouragement or acknowledged the bidirectional influence of parenting on adolescents' online behaviors. To address this gap, this study employed a cross-lagged panel network model to examine the associations among restrictive and active mediation, parental encouragement, and autonomy-supportive and controlling parenting, as well as the interplay of all five parenting strategies with adolescents' online behaviors. A total of 564 Chinese students (51.1% male; mean age = 14.54, SD = 0.7) completed the survey at two time points. The results indicate that in most cases, previous online behaviors are significant and strong predictors of subsequent parenting strategies and not vice versa, corroborating the child effect. The parent and reciprocal effects were observed in the problematic smartphone-use domain, suggesting that the effects may differ for distinct behavioral domains. The effects of parental mediation extend beyond parental encouragement, implying that risk-prevention-related parenting is an effective means of guiding adolescents' online behaviors. Autonomy-relevant general parenting is closely related to active mediation and parental encouragement, while restrictive general parenting is closely related to restrictive mediation, suggesting a consistency between Internet-specific and general parenting strategies.

ABSTRACT

Based on the panel data from 283 prefecture-level cities in China between 2009 and 2019, this study examines the impact of China's carbon emissions trading system on reducing carbon emissions and its mechanisms, using the PSM-DID method. The findings demonstrate that the carbon emissions trading system can effectively decrease the total carbon emissions in pilot cities in China, and has a positive spatial spillover effect on neighboring cities of the pilot areas. The carbon emission trading system primarily reduces carbon emission by incentivizing businesses to implement eco-friendly practices and improve the industrial structure of pilot cities. Increased financial marketisation can promote the carbon emission reduction effects of the trading system. The impact of the carbon emission trading system on old industrial base cities and inland cities is more significant than those on non-old industrial base cities and coastal cities.

ABSTRACT

Host immunity can influence the composition of the gut microbiota and consequently affect disease progression. Previously, we reported that a Mycobacterium vaccae vaccine could ameliorate allergic inflammation in asthmatic mice by regulating inflammatory immune processes. Here, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of M. vaccae on allergic asthma via gut microbiota modulation. An ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic murine model was established and treated with M. vaccae. Gut microbiota profiles were determined in 18 BALB/c mice using 16S rDNA gene sequencing and metabolomic profiling was performed using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Mycobacterium vaccae alleviated airway hyper-reactivity and inflammatory infiltration in mice with OVA-induced allergic asthma. The microbiota of asthmatic mice is disrupted and that this can be reversed with M. vaccae. Additionally, a total of 24 differential metabolites were screened, and the abundance of PI(14:1(9Z)/18:0), a glycerophospholipid, was found to be correlated with macrophage numbers (r = 0.52, p = 0.039). These metabolites may affect chemokine (such as macrophage chemoattractant protein-1) concentrations in the serum, and ultimately affect pulmonary macrophage recruitment. Our data demonstrated that M. vaccae might alleviate airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness in asthmatic mice by reversing imbalances in gut microbiota. These novel mechanistic insights are expected to pave the way for novel asthma therapeutic strategies.

ABSTRACT

Medium carbon steel is an excellent carbon structural steel, and is one of the most common materials for metal cutting. Little research has been done on the microstructural changes induced by thermal-force coupling. In this paper, a finite element simulation method based on the improved J-C model is used to predict the grain size, microstructure change depth and surface hardness of medium carbon steel surface induced by heat-assisted 3D-UVAT are studied. The numerical simulation results are compared with the experimental results, and the significant influence of turning conditions on them is analyzed. The results show that heat-assisted 3D-UVAT lowered the grain size of machined induced deformation zone. Numerical model foresees this case with a mean error of 9.4%. Microstructure and hardness measurements under different turning conditions show that the turning speed and feed rate contribute significantly to grain size and grain refinement layer depth in the area being machined.

This study aimed to adopt the item-method directed forgetting (DF) paradigm to explore the effects of cognitive reappraisal on intentional forgetting of negative emotional pictures. Behavioral results showed that the recognition of to-be-forgotten but remembered (TBF-r) was significantly greater than that of to-be-remembered and remembered (TBR-r) in the recognition test, which was the opposite result to the DF effect. Event-related potential (ERP) results showed that in the 450-660 ms (ms) of cue presentation, the F-cue of the cognitive reappraisal condition (imagining the upcoming pictures to be "fake or performed by actors" to avoid or reduce the intensity of negative emotions caused by the pictures) elicited more positive late positive potential (LPP) than passive viewing (participants watched freely and paid attention to the characters, scenes, and other details in the picture). This indicated that cognitive reappraisal required stronger inhibition than passive viewing for the to-be- forgotten (TBF) items. In the test phase, both the TBR-r and TBF-r items in the cognitive reappraisal condition evoked more positive ERP than correctly rejected (CR) unseen items in the study phase, which induced the frontal old/new effect (P200, 160-240 ms). In addition, this study also found that the LPP amplitudes of 450-660 ms in the frontal area induced by F-cues in cognitive reappraisal were significantly negatively correlated with the LPP amplitudes of 300-3500 ms induced by cognitive reappraisal instructions, and positive waves in the frontal area were significantly positively correlated with the TBF-r behavioral results. However, these results were not observed in the passive viewing group. The above results show that cognitive reappraisal enhances the retrieval ability for TBR and TBF items, and TBF-r is associated with cognitive reappraisal in the study phase and inhibitory control of F-cues.

ABSTRACT

Background: Airway remodeling is accepted to be a determining component within the natural history of asthma. Nebulized inhalation of Mycobacterium vaccae (M. vaccae) has a protective effect on asthmatic mice. However, little is known regarding the effect of M. vaccae on airway structural remodeling in asthmatic mice. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect and the underlying mechanism of M. vaccae aerosol inhalation on airway structural remodeling in an asthma mouse model. Methods: Chronic asthma mouse models were established by ovalbumin induction. The number of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), pathological alterations in lung tissue, and levels of associated cytokines (IL-5, IL-13, TNF-α, and ovalbumin-specific immunoglobulin E [OVA-sIgE]) were all assessed after M. vaccae therapy. The relative expression of interleukin (IL)-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and Wnt1-induced signaling protein 1 (WISP1) mRNA were detected. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry detected the expression of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway-related proteins in lung tissue. Results: M. vaccae aerosol inhalation relieved airway inflammation, airway hyper-responsiveness, and airway remodeling. M. vaccae reduced the levels of IL-5, IL-13, TNF-α, and OVA-sIgE in and downregulated the expression of IL-1ß, TNF-α, NF-κB, and WISP1 mRNA in the pulmonary. In addition, M. vaccae inhibited the expression of ß-catenin, WISP1, and Wnt1 protein and upregulated the expression of glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK-3ß). Conclusion: Nebulized inhalation of M. vaccae can reduce airway remodeling during asthma.

ABSTRACT

Excessive greenhouse gas emissions pose a global environmental concern. This paper examines the impact of energy price on China's CO2 emissions based on an extended STIRPAT (Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology) structural human ecology model. We utilize Chinese provincial data from 2002 to 2016 and apply the spatial panel data techniques to explicitly consider spatial correlations and spillover effects between observations. Our results show that energy price has a significant negative impact on China's CO2 emissions after controlling for other economic and energy market factors and spatial correlations of these variables. We identify a significant direct impact of the focal province's price change on CO2 emissions and an indirect effect exerted by energy price changes in adjacent provinces. Such spatial spillover effects are also observed in other determinants identified in the extended STIRPAT model. We also document a path dependent pattern in China's provincial CO2 emissions with last period CO2 emissions influencing the current CO2 emission levels. Our results show that the negative impact of energy price on CO2 emissions remains qualitatively the same after incorporating the influence of previous period CO2 emissions. Our results are also robust to the inclusion of lagged energy price measures, alternative spatial economic models, and alternative spatial weight matrices. Overall, our paper highlights the role of energy market in curbing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable economic development.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a spatial lag panel smoothing transition regression (SLPSTR) model ty considering spatial correlation of dependent variable in panel smooth transition regression model. This model combines advantages of both smooth transition model and spatial econometric model and can be used to deal with panel data with wide range of heterogeneity and cross-section correlation simultaneously. We also propose a Bayesian estimation approach in which the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm and the method of Gibbs are used for sampling design for SLPSTR model. A simulation study and a real data study are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed model and the Bayesian estimation approach in practice. The results indicate that our theoretical method is applicable to spatial data with a wide range of spatial structures under finite sample.

ABSTRACT

SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ long afterglow phosphors with one-dimensional nanostructures were synthesized by a hydrothermal method followed by post-annealing, and subsequently CdS was uniformly coated on their surfaces by a sol-gel approach. The nanocomposite system can significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange and hexavalent chromium under ultraviolet and visible light irradiation. After the modification treatment with a 1 : 2 molar ratio of CdS to SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ nanophosphors, the degradation rate of methyl orange can increase by 2.5 times and reach a maximum of 96.3% under visible light illumination for 30 min. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity originates from the improvement of light usage efficiency due to the hole migration from SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphors to the CdS semiconductor and the reutilization of SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ luminescence.

ABSTRACT

A novel and expedient one-pot synthesis of thiazino[2,3,4-hi]indole derivatives from o-haloaryl enamines and o-bromothiophenols has been developed. The tandem oxidative coupling/heteroannulation reactions exhibit high selectivity and good efficiency. The polycyclic heterocyclic products obtained might be useful in medicinal chemistry and materials science.
