ABSTRACT

Optochemistry, an emerging pharmacologic approach in which light is used to selectively activate or deactivate molecules, has the potential to alleviate symptoms, cure diseases, and improve quality of life while preventing uncontrolled drug effects. The development of in-vivo applications for optochemistry to render brain cells photoresponsive without relying on genetic engineering has been progressing slowly. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is a region for the regulation of slow-wave sleep (SWS) through the integration of motivational stimuli. Adenosine emerges as a promising candidate molecule for activating indirect pathway neurons of the NAc expressing adenosine A2A receptors (A2ARs) to induce SWS. Here, we developed a brain-permeable positive allosteric modulator of A2ARs (A2AR PAM) that can be rapidly photoactivated with visible light (λ > 400 nm) and used it optoallosterically to induce SWS in the NAc of freely behaving male mice by increasing the activity of extracellular adenosine derived from astrocytic and neuronal activity.

ABSTRACT

Isolated hyoid bone fractures are rare and account for a small percentage of all head and neck fractures. The anatomic location of the hyoid bone, which is between the jaw and the cervical spine, is its most essential protective mechanism. In addition to the anatomic protection provided by the mandible, the fusion of the hyoid's bone pieces and the bone's mobile capacity in all directions are other protective factors contributing to the rarity of these fractures. However, this defense mechanism can get compromised upon exposure to blunt traumas and hyperextension injuries. Injury to the neck by blunt trauma can induce fast deterioration, and a missed or delayed diagnosis can result in morbidity and fatality. The importance of early diagnosis and suggested management options are further discussed. We herein report an unusual case of an isolated hyoid bone fracture in a 26-year-old man who was hit by a car while crossing the street. The patient was otherwise asymptomatic and vitally stable so he was managed successfully by conservative management only.

ABSTRACT

Objectives Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent neoplasms worldwide and it affects women of all ages. This study aimed to identify the common histopathological patterns of ovarian cancer among different age groups in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods This was a retrospective study that reviewed all ovarian specimens diagnosed as "ovarian tumors" by the Pathology Department from January 2016 to December 2020 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Saudi Arabia. The frequencies of ovarian neoplasm subtypes and their frequencies in different age groups were calculated. Results Out of 565 ovarian specimens studied, 63.2% were ovarian neoplasms while 36.8% were non-neoplastic functional cysts. Benign neoplasms 64.4% were more common than borderline 6.2% and malignant ones 29.4% in all age groups, except above the age of 60. Collectively as a category, surface epithelial neoplasms were the most common (59.4%). However, germ cell tumor in the form of mature cystic teratoma was the most common benign neoplasm 33.9% and the most common malignant was serous cystadenocarcinoma (40%). Conclusion Documenting new trends of histopathological patterns of ovarian neoplasms helps to detect variation among different age groups and to understand probable predisposing factors. This study found that the percentage of ovarian malignancy has increased over the years in the western region of Saudi Arabia. This signifies the need to increase awareness in order to achieve timely diagnosis and management.
