ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the impact of supplementation of turmeric powder on laying performance, egg quality, nutrient digestibility and some blood metabolites in laying hens. A total of one hundred and twenty Bovans Brown laying hens (55 weeks old) were assigned to one of four treatment diets (n = 30) for 12 weeks including turmeric powder at 0, 2.5, 5 or 7.5 g/kg respectively. The results revealed that egg production, egg weight and egg mass were significantly increased (p < 0.05), and the feed conversion ratio was significantly improved (p < 0.012) with increasing levels of turmeric in the laying hen diet. Egg thickness and Haugh unit were linearly increased (p < 0.01) with increasing supplementation levels. Moreover, compared with the control diet, the levels of turmeric powder supplementation significantly improved nutrient digestibility (p < 0.001). Moreover, the serum metabolic profile revealed that serum total cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, creatinine and urea concentrations were linearly decreased with increasing turmeric powder supplementation to hen diets. In conclusion, the inclusion of turmeric powder at 2.5, 5 or 7.5 g/kg diet improved egg production, nutrient digestibility, egg quality and serum metabolic profile and may be used as a feed additive in laying hens' nutrition. However, results indicate that the best improvement was observed when 5 g/kg were supplemented.

ABSTRACT

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) of human T cell receptors has revealed a high level of complexity in the T cell repertoire, which makes it difficult to correlate T cell reconstitution with clinical outcomes. The associations identified thus far are of a broadly statistical nature, precluding precise modeling of outcomes based on T cell repertoire development following bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Previous work has demonstrated an inherent, mathematically definable order observed in the T cells from a diverse group of donors, which is perturbed in recipients following BMT. In this study, T cell receptor (TCR)-ß sequences from HLA-matched related donor and recipient pairs are analyzed to further develop this methodology. TCR-ß sequencing from unsorted and sorted T cell subsets isolated from the peripheral blood samples of BMT donors and recipients show conservation and symmetry of VJ segment usage in the clonal frequencies, linked to the organization of the gene segments along the TCR locus. This TCR-ß VJ segment translational symmetry is preserved post-transplantation and even in cases of acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD), suggesting that GVHD occurrence represents a polyclonal donor T cell response to recipient antigens. The complexity of the repertoire is significantly diminished after BMT, and the T cell clonal hierarchy is altered post-transplantation. Low-frequency donor clones tended to take on a higher rank in the recipients following BMT, especially in patients with aGVHD. Over time, the repertoire evolves to a more donor-like state in the recipients who did not develop GVHD as opposed to those who did. The results presented here support new methods of quantifying and characterizing post-transplantation T cell repertoire reconstitution.

ABSTRACT

Oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathologic communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. It is usually associated with maxillary sinusitis, where drainage of sinus infection is a mandatory step during closure of the fistula. The flap used for closure of OAF should be tension free, broadly based and well vascularized. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of closure of OAF using buccal fat pad (BFP) flap with concomitant endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy for maxillary sinus drainage. Nineteen patients with chronic OAF were included in the study. Closure was performed using BFP with endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy. Preoperative and postoperative assessments were carried out. Patients were followed up for at least 1 year postoperatively. Complete closure of all OAFs was achieved with no recurrence or dehiscence. In conclusion, closure of OAF with BFP flap and concomitant endoscopic drainage of the maxillary sinus through the middle meatus is an effective, easy, and simple method. It has a high success rate with no effect on the vestibular depth or mouth opening.

Velopharyngeal surgical procedures may have adverse effect on the airway of the patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the polysomnographic parameters (PSG) in patients who underwent corrective surgery for treatment of VPI. The study included 39 patients who underwent 1 of 3 velopharyngeal surgical techniques; Furlow palatoplasty (12 patients), pharyngeal flap (18 patients), and sphincter pharyngoplasty (9 patients). The patients were subjected to PSG, and they were considered to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with apnea-hypoapnea index (AHI) >1.Comparison of PSG parameters of patients showed insignificant difference regarding the total sleep time, sleep efficiency, arousal index, desaturation index, and minimum oxygen saturation. Significant difference was detected regarding peak end-tidal CO2 and AHI. Pharyngeal flap was detected as the most surgical technique that worsened the PSG parameters with OSA in 78% of patients, followed by sphincter pharyngoplasty with OSA in 56% of patients. Furlow palatoplasty was detected as the least impacting technique on the airway in 25% of patients who demonstrated OSA. In conclusion, velopharyngeal surgery has a variable impact on the PSG; pharyngeal flap has the most worsening effect followed by sphincter pharyngoplasty, while Furlow palatoplasty has the least adverse effect.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Oronasal fistula represents a functional problem, as it may result in nasal regurgitation of food and fluids and it also leads to hypernasal speech. Many methods have been proposed for its closure with a high recurrence rate. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of closure of hard palate fistula by two layers of mucoperiosteal flaps. METHODS: Eighteen patients with fistula of the hard palate were included. The fistula was repaired by two layers of mucoperiosteal flaps; the first layer was created from the mucoperiosteum surrounding the fistula as bilateral hinge flaps and the second layer was formed of a rotational flap based on the greater palatine artery. Pre- and postoperative clinical assessment was performed. RESULTS: The etiology of fistulas was previous cleft palate repair in 13 patients, previous nasal septal surgery in 3 patients, and untreated sharp accidental trauma to the palate in 2 patients. All patients presented with nasal regurgitation and hypernasal speech. Complete closure of all fistulas was achieved at first attempt, with no recurrence through the follow up period. CONCLUSIONS: Closure of oronasal fistula by two layers of mucoperiosteal flaps is an effective method and it has neither complications nor recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Translation of stem cell research from bench to bedside opens up exciting new therapeutic options for patients. Although stem cell research has progressed rapidly, its clinical applications have not kept pace. We report on the establishment of a stem cell research and regenerative medicine program at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC). The purpose of this unit is to coordinate advanced stem cell research and translational outcomes with the goal of treating chronic human diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurological, immunological, and liver diseases. Our first step in achieving this goal was to integrate the stem cells and regenerative medicine unit with our umbilical cord blood bank and bone marrow registry. This organizational structure will provide different sources for stem cells for research and clinical purposes, and facilitate our stem cell research and stem cell transplantation program. We are at an early and exciting stage in our program, but we believe that our progress to the international stage will be rapid and have a significant impact.
