ABSTRACT

The current apomixis system used in fixing heterozygosity suffers from the problems of low fertility and limited apomixis induction rate. This study implies that egg-cell-specific expression of dandelion's PAR combined with MiMe in hybrid rice can efficiently trigger highly fertile synthetic apomixis for effective clonal propagation of hybrids.

ABSTRACT

Resonant-type piezoelectric impact motors can improve the output capability effectively. A new construction of asymmetric inertial masses is proposed to synthesize approximate saw-tooth wave resonant vibration with matched anti-phase and in-phase modes. A prototype is designed, manufactured, and tested. With 40 Vp-p, 400 Hz exciting voltage for the anti-phase mode and 16 Vp-p, 800 Hz exciting voltage for the in-phase mode, the prototype provides a maximum no-load velocity of 17.2 mm/s and a maximum output power of 0.72 mW with 100 mN load. The velocity and output power of the prototype in the proposed resonant state are near three orders of magnitude higher than those in the traditional quasi-static state.

ABSTRACT

Genetic erosion refers to the loss of genetic variation in a crop. In China, only a few original landraces of rice (Oryza sativa) were used in breeding and these became the primary genetic background of modern varieties. Expanding the genetic diversity among Chinese rice varieties and cultivating high-yielding and high-quality varieties with resistance to different biotic and abiotic stresses is critical. Here, we used the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein9(Cas9) genome editing system to edit Semi-Dwarf1 (SD1) in the elite landraces Kasalath and TeTePu (TTP), which contain many desired agronomic traits such as tolerance to low phosphorous and broad-spectrum resistance to several diseases and insects. Mutations of SD1 confer shorter plant height for better resistance to lodging. Field trials demonstrated that the yield of the new Kasalath and TTP mutant lines was better than that of the wild type under modern cultivation and that the lines maintained the same desirable agronomic characteristics as their wild-type progenitors. Our results showed that breeding using available landraces in combination with genomic data of different landraces and gene-editing techniques is an effective way to relieve genetic erosion in modern rice varieties.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Many cities in China are currently experiencing severe air pollution due to modernization. Previous studies investigating the effects of air pollutants exposure were particularly conducted in severe air polluted area and studies in low pollution areas were sparse. METHODS: To quantitatively assess the short-term effects of ambient air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3) on outpatient visits in low pollution area, we conducted a time-series analysis from Jan 1, 2015 to Dec 31, 2016 in Shennongjia, China. Generalized additive model (GAM) was used to evaluate the influence of PM2.5 on daily hospital outpatient visits with different lag structures. We also conducted stratified analysis to explore the association between PM2.5 concentration and outpatient visits in different seasons. RESULTS: In the present study, per IQR increment of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO and O3 were related with 1.92% (0.76%-3.09%), 1.92% (0.77%-3.07%), 2.74% (95% CI: 1.65%-3.83%), 1.89% (95% CI: 0.68%-3.10%) and 2.30% (95% CI: 0.65%-3.95%) increase on respiratory outpatient visits. Significant associations were found between PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and respiratory outpatient visits at lag0:1, lag0:2 days. The effects of PM2.5 were more evident in the cool season than in the warm season. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that short-term exposures to PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO and O3 were related with increased risk of outpatient visits of respiratory diseases, and highlighted the adverse effect of air pollutants exposure, especially PM2.5 exposure in cool season on health in low pollution area.
