Aproximación al estudio de las teorías del envejecimiento y cambios neurobiológicos en el paciente geriátrico / Approximation to the study of the theories of aging and neurobiological changes in the geriatric patient

Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre las teorías del envejecimiento y de los cambios neurobiológicos que ocurren en el paciente geriátrico, para contribuir a elevar el conocimiento sobre este tema entre los profesionales de la atención primaria y secundaria de salud, en aras de mejorar el manejo de este tipo de paciente. Se encontró que en Cuba el porcentaje de envejecimiento poblacional constituye el principal problema demográfico actual. El incremento de las personas de 60 años y más en Cuba es uno de los más rápidos e intensos que haya ocurrido a nivel internacional(AU)

A bibliographical review about aging theories and neurobiological changes in geriatric patients was carried out in order to increase the knowledge on this topic among primary and secondary healthcare professionals, to improve the handling of these patients. It was found that the percentage of aging in the Cuban population is the main demographic problem nowadays. The increase of the number of people of 60 years and over in Cuba is one of the fastest and most intense worldwide(AU)

Algunas variables de interés médico social y epidemiológico en el adulto mayor / Some variables of medical social and epidemiologic interest in the elderly

Debido a que la población anciana ha aumentado con una rapidez mayor que el resto y la tendencia se mantendrá hasta bien entrada esta centuria, y utilizando datos de los archivos del policlínico Rafael Izquierdo Ramírez de Delicias en el municipio de Puerto Padre, durante el 2008 se realizó una investigación observacional descriptiva de corte transversal, con consentimiento de participar y no tener enfermedad física o psíquica invalidante; para determinar aspectos de interés epidemiológico, médico y social. Se distribuyeron por edad, sexo y estado de salud mental; se precisó la situación estructural de las viviendas y la presencia en estas de barreras arquitectónicas; la presencia de enfermedades trasmisibles y no trasmisibles en los gerontes objeto de estudio; la situación social de los mismos y se valoró el funcionamiento del Equipo Multidisciplinario de Atención Gerontológica (EMAG) en esta área de salud. La información fue computarizada y los resultados se mostraron en tablas y gráficos para su mejor comprensión, aplicándose métodos estadísticos propios de investigaciones descriptivas (AU)

Because the elderly population has increased more rapidly than the other aga groups and because the tendency will remain the same for many years after the beginning of this century, by using data from Rafael Izquierdo Ramírez polyclinics, located in Delicias, in Puerto Padre municipality, an observational descriptive investigation of the transversal kind was done during 2008, with the informed consent of the patients to participate. Those patients did not have invalidating physical or psychiatric disorders. The aim was to determine aspects of epidemiological, medical and social interest. The patients were distributed according to age, sex, and mental health state. Housing structural condition and the presence of architectonical barriers, the presence of transmissible and non- transmissible illnesses in the elderly studied, their social situation, and the functioning of the Geriatric Multidisciplinary Health Care team (EMAG, for its acronym in Spanish) were included as variables. The information was computed and the results showed in tables and graphs for a better understanding, using statistics methods characteristic of descriptive investigations (AU)
